Webwereld schrijft dat de overheidsadvocaten in de antitrustzaak tegen Microsoft een door Microsoft op het laatste moment gefaxt schikkingsvoorstel niet ver genoeg vinden gaan. Na vier maanden van moeizame onderhandelingen hebben beide partijen geen overeenstemming weten te bereiken. Het is nu wachten op het definitieve oordeel van rechter Thomas Jackson:

Net voor het weekend faxte Microsoft een gedetailleerd schikkingsvoorstel naar haar aanklagers. Na bestudering zien deze echter te weinig aanknopingspunten om de onderhandelingen te hervatten. Rechter Thomas Jackson zal waarschijnlijk dinsdag zijn oordeel uitspreken.

[...] Volgens diverse Amerikaanse media denkt Microsoft meer aan zaken als het gedeeltelijk vrijgeven van de broncode van Windows – inclusief de zogeheten API's (Application Programming Interfaces) – en het loskoppelen van Internet Explorer en Windows. Eerder gaf Microsoft al aan zich te willen aanpassen wat betreft de prijsstelling van Windows. Er zou dan één vaste prijs moeten komen.

Het lijkt er nochtans op dat de knieval van Microsoft niet diep genoeg is.

Ik lees bij Ace's Hardware dat het OpenGL gedeelte van de nieuwe Savage2000 drivers ondersteuning voor T&L acceleratie zal bieden. T&L in DirectX is echter (nog) niet mogelijk:

We have learned that the DirectX part of the new drivers for the Savage 2000 will not support T&L acceleration, while the OpenGL drivers will. As we have reported earlier, the next wave of Savage 2000 (the chip on Diamond's Viper II video card) drivers will offer better DirectX performance and T&L acceleration.

Unfortunatly the bugs in the T&L unit of the Savage2000 chips are pretty bad, and no workarounds were possible in the DirectX drivers.

DiGiSTORM bezorgde ons een link naar AMD-Zone, waarvandaan ik terechtkwam op deze wazige site met info over de KX-133 plank van FIC, de SK11. Deze zal standaard voorzien zijn van een IEEE-1394 (ook wel bekend als FireWire-poort). Verder aanwezig: 5 PCI slots, 1 ISA, 3 DIMM en on-board audio.

De World-Online aandelen blijven hardnekkig zakken. Steeds meer beleggers besluiten uit het aandeel te stappen nu ze er nog iets voor krijgen. Sinds de introductie, 8 beurdagen geleden is het aandeel gezakt van een hoogste punt van 51.30 euro naar 24.20 euro nu, een daling van 53%. Vergeleken met de introductiekoers van 43 euro is het aandeel bijna 44% gezakt. Het is nog maar de vraag of hier snel verandering in zal komen, hoewel enkele beleggingsexperts hebben aangeraden bij een koers van 20 euro weer te gaan kopen.

djAzEtE schrijft: "Pinnacle heeft dan toch eindelijk nieuwe drivers (versie 4.0) uitgebracht voor de Miro PCTV(pro). Volgens de site zijn ze al op 13/03 gereleased maar omdat diezelfde site een tijd down was kon niemand ze downloaden. Het beste nieuws is dat deze drivers nu ook geschikt zijn voor Windows 2000. Welliswaar bevinden de drivers zich nog allemaal in de beta-fase, maar ze zijn er in ieder geval mee bezig. ".

Netcraft heeft de resultaten van de Webserver survey voor de maand Maart gepubliceerd. Het marktaandeel van Apache beleefde een stijging van bijna 2% en heeft nu een nieuw hoogtepunt van 60,05% bereikt. Microsoft en iPlanet (Netscape/Sun) daalden met respectievelijk 1 en 0,48%. Het gebruik van Windows 2000 verdubbelde ten opzichte van februari, maar het is nog onduidelijk of de lancering van Win2k ook gevolgen heeft voor het marktaandeel van Linux en Solaris:

Windows 2000 doubled its prelaunch figure of 20,000 sites to over 40,000 sites during the month, and has overtaken AIX in terms of number of internet web sites. A number of busy financial content sites including Motley Fool, CBS Marketwatch, and BigCharts have adopted the operating system over the past few weeks. However, the jury is still out on whether Windows 2000 will impact the established presence of Linux and Solaris at the largest hosting companies. So far the largest individual deployment is at Interland which has a couple of thousand sites running Windows 2000 and Microsoft-IIS/5.0. Conversely, Microsoft has always done well in self hosted environments. In the .mil domain, where few sites are externally hosted, Microsoft-IIS leads with 43%.

Een stuk of 4 bezoekers tipten ons over een onderzoek van IDC naar de besturingsystemen bij bedrijven. Het blijkt dat Linux in 1999 het marktaandeel heeft zien groeien van 16 naar 25%. Vreemd genoeg moest Unix terug van 19 naar 15%, terwijl Microsofts NT4 bleef staan op 38%. Hoe de cijfers er na de release van Windows 2000 voorstaan is nog niet bekend. Uit recent verschenen cijfers van marktonderzoeksbureau IDC blijkt dat Linux momenteel het enige besturingssysteem is dat significante groei vertoond. Stond het marktaandeel van deze omgeving in 1998 nog op 16 procent wereldwijd, in 1999 was dit fors gestegen tot een kwart van de markt. Wat marktaandeel betreft leiden Netware en Unix allebei verlies. De eerste moest terug van 23 procent van de markt naar 19 procent in 1999. Ook Unix deed een stapje terug en ging van 19 naar 15 procent.

Ritchie dropte een bericht in de Nieuws-submit queue en meldde dat Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 voor de Mac heeft uitgebracht. Het ombouwen van IE5 duurde maar liefst 8 maanden, maar volgens de manager van Microsofts' Mac-unit was het het wachten wel waard. Tegelijkertijd is ook Outlook 5.02 uitgebracht.

IE 5 brings a new and more "Mac like" user interface to its browser application. Users can now choose the browser color to match a number of iMac colors.

"...now we've got this cool looking translucent chrome background on it (the browser window), brand new icons that have this really cool glow when you mouse over them and the ability to switch your color to match your iMac. This is the kind of stuff Mac users care about!"

Acknowledging that Internet Explorer 5 was a long time in coming, Kwong believes it was well worth it. "If I had a dollar for every person that asked me 'When is IE 5 going to be released?', I would be very rich," Kwong said. "I hope after they give it a good looking over, every IE 5 user will feel it was worth the wait because I know we here in the Mac Business Unit feel it was."

No less insignificant, Outlook Express 5.02 gets an updating with new security features. Outlook Express will now support Authenticated SMTP, a security standard used by many Internet service providers to guarantee the identity of e-mail senders. The update also offers improved launch speeds for customers with large databases,better performance in reading complex HTML messages, importing messages and contacts from Claris Emailer, and connecting with ISP POP servers.

AMD heeft drie nieuwe wallpapers gemaakt om je bureaublad achtergrond mee op te leuken. Thema is het feit dat de Athlon nu als 1 GHz-processor te krijgen is. Het zal echter nog wel even duren voordat er bij de gemiddelde tweaker ook daadwerkelijk een GHz-Athlon in de kast te vinden is

Planet Multimedia meldt dat Cistron Telecom binnenkort met flat rate abo's voor ISDN2 (2 kanaals ISDN, FL 88 per maand) en analoge internet verbindingen (69 gulden per maan) komt. De dienst zal in eerste instantie beschikbaar zijn in een beperkt deel van Rotterdam en zal in de zomer uitgebreid worden naar andere delen van de randstad, waaronder Delft, Alphen aan de Rijn en Amsterdam. Later volgen Den Haag en Utrecht. Oerwoudbewoners (zoals deze Achterhoeker hiero) worden blijkbaar weer in de steek gelaten :'( (thanks Zerocool voor de tip).

Koen Crijns wees me nog even op de review van de ComputerNerd Fac7Alpha socket 370 cooler die onlangs op zijn site verschenen is. Hieronder een gedeelte over zijn performance ten opzichte van een standaard cooler:

De simpelste test die je maar kunt bedenken is ook een belangrijke: het meten van de idle-temperatuur van je processor. Dit houdt in dat je je computer opstart en hem vervolgens een uur ofzo aan laat staan zonder er ook maar iets mee te doen. Met de standaard koeler bedroeg de idle-temperatuur van de processor 40 ºC, met de Alpha werd dit teruggebracht tot 35 ºC. Nu is 40 ºC natuurlijk niet te heet voor een processor (de processor was een Celeron 366@550 uit week 40 met voedingspanning 2,05 Volt, meestal al succesvol te overklokken met een standaard koeler) maar het gaat om het verschil van 5 ºC. Een andere test die we gedaan hebben is het spelen van spellen waar processors niet zo dol op zijn zoals bijvoorbeeld Quake III. Na een uurtje of twee Quake III gespeeld te hebben bereikte de processor met standaardkoeler een temperatuur van 44 ºC, met de Alpha bereikte de processor onder gelijke omstandigheden een temperatuur van zo’n 37 ºC. Dat scheelt dus al stukken. Als ultieme kwelling hebben we de Prime Torture Test gedraaid. Tijdens deze test wordt je processor ‘gekweld’ met het berekenen van grote priemgetallen. Vaak wordt de Prime Torture Test ook gebruikt om te kijken of een overgeklokt systeem stabiel is, tijdens de test bereikt je processor fenomenale temperaturen. Zo ook in ons geval: de processor met standaardkoeler werd 46 ºC, de Alpha was niet erg onder de indruk van de test want hij wist te processor op 39 ºC te houden. Zoals al eerder gezegd zijn het niet echt temperaturen waarbij je bang bent dat je processor kan overlijden, maar het zijn de temperatuursverschillen die tellen. Voor velen kan het hét verschil zijn tussen succesvol en niet succesvol overklokken. Bovendien geldt altijd dat hoe koeler je processor is, des te langer hij leeft.

Er viel net een e-mail van David in mijn inbox die me kwam vertellen dat hij een site heeft gebouwd over zijn waterkoeling project op een BP6 plank. Het hele proces wordt er duidelijk uitgelegd en er zijn veel foto's te vinden:

Ik kan nu mijn Celerons 466 overklokken tot 588mhz zonder het voltage te verhogen.De temperatuur van de procs komt dan niet hoger dan 30C. 595 is haalbaar maar dan is ie niet echt stabiel, alleen voor 'licht desktop' werk. Ideaal voor rc5 dus. 601 kan ook nog, maar dan moet ik het voltage verhogen naar 2.3 en dan is ie helemaal niet stabiel. Dit hoop ik wel voor elkaar te krijgen met peltiers, maar zover is het nog niet...

Het volk van AMD Xtreme brengt ons een review van de Soltek SL-77KV, een Slot-A KX133 moederbord met 1xAGP, 1xAMR, 5xPCI, 1xISA en 3xDIMM. Mensen die van plan zijn een jumbo-cooler te gaan gebruiken om hun Athlon koel te houden zullen hinder ondervinden van de DIMM sloten die helaas vrij dicht bij de processor zijn geplaatst:

We get 3 standard DIMM slots that support PC133 RAM up to 256 MB per slots for a maximum of 768 MB on the board. It has 2 built in USB ports with pins to add 2 more although the board does not come with the add-on card for these other 2 ports. It is equipped with the standard PS/2 Keyboard and mouse ports, two 9 pin serial ports and 1 parallel port.

The big issue with the layout of the board is that the DIMM sockets are too close to the processor. When I first installed my processor I have the Alpha heatsink/fan installed and it blocked the first DIMM socket. I thought no big deal I will just install the RAM into the 2nd or 3rd socket, no can do. The system would not even post with the ram in either the 2nd or 3rd sockets. I then tried a single fan Global Win cooling unit but it too blocked the first DIMM socket. I finally had to put on a AMD stock heatsink/fan that came with a Athlon 650 retail unit. Not a good thing for users looking to push their systems to the extreme.

Win98Central heeft een flinke e-mail ontvangen met daarin heel wat nieuwe info over Windows Millennium Edition (WindowsMe). Zo wordt er o.a. gemeld dat dit nieuwe OS geen legacy driver support zal bevatten voor ISA kaarten. Hieronder heb je het hele verhaal:

"This new operating system program, i.e. WindowsME, no longer provides a nice plethora of easily installable drivers as its predecessor, i.e. Windows '95/'98 once did!

It's a whole new "driver search" ball game when it comes to WindowsME future users.

No longer is DOS layered within this type of MICROSOFT Windows operating system program as DOS 7.10 was in Windows '95/'98.

Windows Millenium basically has some new components which are similar to Windows 2000 (Hibernate function, desktop, etc.). It comes with Internet Explorer and Outlook Express version 5.5.

For the most part, the required bug patches and fixes of Windows '98 Second Edition are not required for WindowsME.

WindowsME "Minimum" Requirements: 32-MB RAM (won't let you install O.S. with anything less!), Math Co-Processor, Pentium-class 150MHz or faster CPU and, 550-MB free hard disk space.

One (1) new card game called, "Spider" for the program along with four (4) new MS ONLINE GAMES are included in WindowsME.

New screen saver for WindowsME (you're not gonna believe this but, it's a slow bouncing picture-box of an African-American's feet, hand, arm with gym shorts positioned at the start-line of a foot-race track).

What else is "new" for WindowsME? MICROSOFT's "MovieMaker" program which allows you to edit video pictures which you have to take with your own video camera.

That's about the size of it . . . A new Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Screensaver, MovieMaker, Online Games, Spider, the card game, hibernate (sleep/standby-type options), NO LEGACY DRIVER SUPPORT, a new desktop background and, more money to be outlayed!

Websites such as "driverforum.com" and other similar websites will have their hands full of requests for legacy drivers in order for the common user to get their P-Cs, back up and running with WindowsME.

Those who do not have their original driver disks, those who may not know "how" to navigate for archived driver file downloads will be faced with replacing their legacy devices in order to run WindowsME. Hardware Accessory Heaven for most P-C dealer outlets across the country will be at hand.

WindowsME has been rumored to be released May 26th, 2000 or, during the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2000. The fact of the matter is, I have and am using the new post-BETA release (absolutely NO "Beta" designations listed on this program!).

WindowsME is nothing more than the "educational-transition operating system program" that, MICROSOFT has dreamed up for all Windows '95/'98 users to become familiar with before we "all" wind up using what will soon be only available to us, e.g. Windows NT-type programs, i.e. Windows 2000, Windows Neptune, Windows Omega, Windows Whistler, Windows BlackComb and all those other MICROSOFT "codenamed" products soon to be released.

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft deel 2 van zijn erg informatief artikel over de werking van 3D kaarten gepost. In deel 1 gaf Koen al een korte inleiding over de werkwijze van een 3D videokaart, in dit deel bespreekt hij de 'pixel rendering engine'. Hieronder vast een gedeelte:

In het vorige deel van dit artikel heeft u kunnen lezen dat de 3D chip in stap 5 van het 3D rendering proces de uiteindelijk gebruikte driehoeken omrekent naar een set pixels die deze driehoek op het scherm behelst. Het is nu de taak van de pixel rendering engine om de uiteindelijke kleur van alle pixels op het scherm te berekenen. Dit gehele proces gebeurt pixel voor pixel en iedere pixel waarvan de uiteindelijke kleur berekend is, wordt door de rendering engine in de zogenaamde back buffer geplaatst. Zoals we vorige maand al gezien hebben, wordt het 3D beeld in deze back buffer opgebouwd en zodra een geheel beeld berekend is, wordt de back buffer gekopieerd naar de front buffer en wordt de afbeelding op het scherm vertoond. De pixel rendering engine begint dan in de back buffer weer van voren af aan voor het volgende frame.

Bij het berekenen van de uiteindelijke kleur van een pixel kunnen we twee belangrijke zaken onderscheiden: het berekenen van de globale kleur van een pixel en het later toepassen van enkele effecten. De wijze van berekenen van de globale kleur van een pixel vloeit voort uit de verschillende manieren waarop 3D objecten kunnen worden ingekleurd. Dit inkleuren heet binnen het 3D jargon "shaden".

DiGiSTORM schrijft: "Voor degenen die graag nog wat meer performance uit hun super 7 systeem willen halen heeft Ace's Hardware een aantal tests gedaan met een K6-2/500, K6-2/550 en een K6-3/400...":

Super 7 is starting to show its age. Even the fastest Super 7 CPU's can not push modern games past the 30 frames per second mark. If you want excellent game performance, look elsewhere. Wait for socket A to arrive or go for Slot A and an Athlon now or go for Socket 370 with a good overclockable PIII-550.

If you manage to get your hands on a young K6-III 400 (2.2v version), go for this chip. Most of them should reach 450 MHz now, and it is clear that a K6-3 450 will be faster than a K6-2 550 in most cases.

The K6-2 500/550 is not useless, however. If you have a "higher-than-100 MHz" FSB setting on your motherboard, then by all means, use it! In that case, you might prefer to go for the K6-2 500/550, as they are a cheap and effortless upgrade for your Super 7 board. A k6-2 560 performs as well as or slightly better than a K6-III 428, and offers the advantage of higher FPU performance in those applications (RC5, some DirectX games) that depend on sheer clockspeed. The coolest thing about our three upgrade candidates is their price: always below $100!

Als je een goede raad van mij wil aannemen: upgrade geen Super 7 CPU, het blijft toch langzaam, je kan beter je geld inversteren in een nieuwe Celeron, Spitfire of in World Online aandelen .

Maartz stuurde deze link door waar een interessant tabelletje te vinden is met informatie over de AAlchemy kaarten van Quantum3D, kaarten met een bovengemiddelde hoeveelheid VSA-100 chips.

Deze kaarten lijken mij idiaal voor de hardcore gamer, voor het luttele bedrag van $40.000 dollar ben je eigenaar van een kaartje met 32 VSA-100 chips .

Peter Gelder verblijdde mij met het bericht dat hij Promise gemaild heeft met de vraag of er ook Ultra100 en FastTrak100 controllers aan zitten te komen, en dit het (wel wat korte) antwoord was:

Jammer dat er niets gezegd wordt over de release date, of over een eventuele FastTrak100.

In tegenstelling tot het nieuws van 8 februari dat de populaire newreader Forté Agent niet meer verder ontwikkeld zou worden, is er toch weer een nieuwe versie uitgebracht:

Zo te zien heeft S3 nog heel wat te doen.

Uncamilty.com heeft de Asus P3V4X, een slot 1 moederbord met de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset, 1 ISA, 6 PCI, 1 AGP en geen AMR slot onder de loep genomen en het resultaat is hier te lezen.
Het lijkt erop de Asus niet de moeite heeft genomen om een geheel nieuw bord te ontwerpen; zo is de plek waar op de Asus P2B-F een tweede ISA slot zat duidelijk herkenbaar.

Over de prestaties is de reviewer redelijk tevreden.

Asus has provided a good motherboard in the P3V4X. It proved about as stable as the Abit VA6 when overclocking the same CPU, being more stable in some situations and less so in others. This may not be the ideal setup for the hard core gamer- the BX chipset still seems to offer the best overall performance for gaming, and the P3V4X's inability to run 3DMark 2000 at 733+MHz is also a negative for those looking for a 3D gaming solution. But for the graphics pro looking to build an economy/hobbyist box, the P3V4X looks like a good call. It is stable, expandable and fast, provides the ever-important four DIMM slots, and offers good overclocking options in the BIOS. Ga'ash Soffer van Voodoo Extreme heeft een review van de Gigabyte GA-GF2560 online gemikt. Deze GeForce met TV-out en 183MHz SDR (5,5ns) SDRAM kon naar een indrukwekkende 155/192MHz overgeklokt worden:

The board overclocked very very well, with the clock MHz hitting 155 from the default 120 and the memory hitting 192MHz! (very impressive considering it is rated at 183MHz). This is even better than the impressive overclocking of the ELSA Erazor X. Furthermore, the board survived several hours of 3D gaming without a problem! The speed at the max clock speed? 1024x768x16bit color = 68.8fps. 1024x768x32bit color, 47.1fps. Still not GeForce DDR levels, but 47.1fps is very playable making the overclocked GA-GF2560 an excellent solution even for 32bit color.

EBN Online meldt dat de prijzen van LCD flat panels het komende jaar door overproduktie snel zullen dalen. De omslag van onder- naar overproduktie is het gevolg van capaciteitsuitbreiding bij LCD fabrikanten:

The most popular LCD modules for notebook PCs and desktop monitors are entering a period of oversupply, bringing lower prices for OEMs as the boom-or-bust cycle continues for flat-panel display makers.

[...] “We definitely see an oversupply because there's just too much spending,” said DisplaySearch analyst Ross Young. “There's somewhat of a herd mentality in the [thin-film transistor] TFT-LCD industry. No one wants to lose market share, so they all increase spending.”

[...] The main reason for the increase is new capacity coming on line at established suppliers and a concerted market entrance by Taiwanese vendors. In fact, DisplaySearch said that by region, Taiwan will have 35% of the world's LCD manufacturing capacity by 2005, significantly more than Japan and nearly as much as Korea.

Hitachi heeft een aanklacht ingediend tegen Rambus Inc wegens schending van de Sherman Antitrust Act. Deze actie volgt op de eerdere rechtszaak die Rambus Inc. tegen Hitachi heeft aangespannen. Rambus is van mening dat de clock timing technologie in de Hitachi SDRAM chips en SH-x processors is gebaseerd op door Rambus Inc. gepatenteerde technologie. Volgens Hitachi heeft Rambus Inc., in strijd met de JEDEC reglementen, patent aangevraagd op een technologie die op dat moment in bespreking was binnen de JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, clubje fabrikanten dat open standaarden ontwikkelt):

In its filing, Hitachi charged that Rambus has attached conditions to its Direct RDRAM licenses by requiring companies to license other technology before granting access to its memory-interface. Hitachi claimed such a practice violates provisions of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

Hitachi asked the court to nullify the Rambus synchronous-chip patents, citing prior invention in the industry. The brief also said that Rambus participated in industry JEDEC standards meetings in the mid-1990s involving synchronous ICs, and gained access to technology it later patented in violation of JEDEC open-standards rules.

"Rambus used that information to revise secretly its then-pending but undisclosed patent applications and to prepare related additional applications to cover the very technology and potential standards being discussed by other JEDEC partcipants," the brief stated.

AnandTech heeft een review gepost van de Tyan S2380 Trinity K7, een KX133 plank die tot blijdschap van velen is uitgerust met 6 PCI slots en geen AMR gaatje. Helaas zijn er naast 100 en 90MHz geen extra busspeeds beschikbaar. Vcore tweaks zijn wel mogelijk, alleen verloopt dit middels onhandige ouderwetse jumpers. Volgens Anand is het bord minder stabiel dan de Asus K7V, maar hij verteld er net als bij z'n AOpen AK72 review hoe dit beoordeeld wordt:

Stability is a major issue with motherboards, and from our tests, we have yet to see a KX133 based motherboard that measures up to the stability we experienced on the ASUS K7V-RM. While the S2380, like the EPoX and AOpen boards, was generally a stable solution, it provided for a noticeable difference in stability between itself and the ASUS board. The S2380 should be fine for most users, as the board is far from being horrendously unstable, but for the users that leave their systems on 24/7 and aren't used to rebooting every now and then, the ASUS board may be a better alternative. For the average gamer, SOHO user, etc..., the S2380 should do just fine.

Zoals je ziet is de power connector op sympathieke wijze gepositioneerd (de Abit KA7 heeft dat trouwens ook). Geen ruzie met veel te grote heatsinks!
