Bij Thresh's Firingsquad hebben ze een mooi artikeltje geschreven over de overclocking mogelijkheden van de Pentium III 600E, op een BX en 820 plankje.

While we were a bit disappointed with our BX results, clearly this was a limitation of the graphics card and not the CPU as our 600E ran flawlessly at 828MHz once paired with the 820 chipset. In fact, if the AX6C allowed for voltage manipulation, we're certain we could have achieved even higher clock speeds. Overall, 228MHz certainly isn't a bad overclock and considering 600E's can be found for under $250, we're very pleased with our results.

So is the 600E the replacement for the 500E/550E? Yes and no. With its 6.0x multiplier, the 600E doesn't require the hefty bus speeds necessary for the 550E and 500E. On the other hand, the 550E can be found for under $200. So what's our final recommendation? If you can afford the extra $50 or so for the 600E, definitely pick one up, especially if you plan on using it with a BX motherboard.

De 600E wil dus bestwel getweakt worden en met een mobo waarmee je ook nog het voltage kan instellen moet het helemaal lekker gaan .

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) heeft als eerste chipbakker een 0,13µm koper-interconnect procédé voorgesteld. De eerste chips die gebruik maken van deze technologie zullen vanaf het eerste kwartaal van 2001 geproduceerd worden. Massaproduktie staat gepland voor het derde kwartaal:

Gamers Depot heeft een review van de Midiland S4/8200 5.1 speakerset on-line gezet. De kwaliteit van de speakers is erg hoog evenals de prijs:

One of the first things that will strike you while listening to the 8200s is how warm of a sound they have, and just how powerful the subwoofer is. Midiland did an excellent job of blending the subwoofer and satellites, although in my opinion 200Hz is still too high to have as a crossover frequency. The reason is that there is still a lot of "directional" sound at frequencies above 120hz. Directional means that there is sound information that will create a "sound stage" in front of you. Low frequencies, like those from most subwoofers, are non-directional so it's not important as to where the subwoofer is placed within the room. I'm sure the reason they selected 200hz is because the 3" driver in the satellites isn't large enough to adequatley produce sounds below 200hz. Yet another reason why we can't wait till speaker makers start producing satellites with at least a 5 1/4" driver.

There is hardly anything more staisfying then launching your favorite game, running your 3D API of choice and being fully imerrsed into the game by sound that is so rich in detail it is almost as if you could reach out and touch it.

News.com meldt dat rechter Thomas Jackson vandaag geen uitspraak zal doen in de antitrustzaak tegen Microsoft. Momenteel zijn Microsoft en de Amerikaanse regering nog steeds in onderhandeling over een schikkingsvoorstel dat vlak voor de deadline door Microsoft werd ingediend:

Judge Jackson was expected to rule today, but reports late yesterday indicated he might postpone action for at least a day and possibly for as many as 10 days. "There will be no ruling today," said press liaison Joe Alexander at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Still, the progress of settlement talks is very difficult to gauge and can change literally by the hour, warned Gray.

ZDNet meldt dat de AMD Spitfire met 128KB L2 cache wordt geleverd. Dit in tegenstelling tot eerdere berichten, volgens welke de Spitfire 128KB L1 en 64KB L2 cache krijgt. Het gaat hierbij om 'exclusive cache' waarbij data in de L2 cache niet dubbel wordt opgeslagen in de L1 cache, waardoor er feitelijk 192KB cache is. Het is de vraag of ZDNet het bij het rechte eind heeft, of dat ze zelf wat uit hun nek lopen te lullen. Volgens geruchten is de Spitfire core 99mm^2 klein en daar schijnt geen 128KB L2 cache in te passen:

AMD is planning to match as closely as possible Intel's Celeron in clock speeds. The company is expected to release Spitfire at four clock speeds, sources said: 550MHz, 600MHz, 650MHz and 700MHz. Spitfire will sport 128KB of on-board Level 2 cache. The current K6-2 processor has 512KB of off-chip cache. Integrating cache increases performance and should give the chip an additional performance boost.

While AMD's Spitfire chip is expected to be competitive with Celeron in clock speed and cache, it will excel in one area: Spitfire will offer a much faster bus speed than Celeron chips.

Versatel opperhoofd Gary Mesch heeft op The Internet Working Event in de RAI laten weten dat de zakelijke marktbij de introductie van ADSL de hoogste prioriteit krijgt. Drie week gelden werd bekend dat Versatel in samenwerking met het Amerikaanse Northpoint vanaf de zomer onder de naam Versapoint broadband DSL diensten aan zal gaan bieden, maar zoals het er nu uit ziet hebben wij consumenten daar voorlopig geen biet aan:

Dit tot diepe teleurstelling van discussieleider Vincent Everts. "We hebben het nu nodig", predikte de zelfverklaarde e-vangelist. "We moeten minimaal honderd keer zoveel bandbreedte per persoon krijgen." Everts, die drie jaar lang directeur was van promotiecentrum Mediaplaza, is nu actief als Venture Capitalist. Hij werkt samen met Roel Pieper voor Insight Capital Partners.

Veel internetbedrijven lijken echter op de hand van Versatel. Internetaanbieder Euronet kondigde vanmorgen haar ADSL-diensten aan, voor de zakelijke markt. Wanadoo, het merk van Euronet voor de consumentenmarkt, biedt vooralsnog geen ADSL aan.

Euronet wil medio mei de eerste klanten in Amsterdam, Den Haag, Rotterdam en Utrecht aansluiten op haar ADSL-dienst. Euronet biedt twee pakketten gebaseerd op Mxstream van KPN.

GREENSKiN schrijft dat BeOS 5.0 Personal Edition nu te downloaden is van free.be.com, de server heeft een beetje last van een overmatige belangstelling en ik kwam er pas op na 15x proberen.

BeOS 5 komt eraan, en de details zijn vandaag gepost. Helaas heeft be.com last van het SlashDot effect dus je moet een aantal keer proberen voordat je er op komt. Als het goed is, wordt BeOS 5 binnen 18 uur gereleased. Belangrijkste nieuwe hardwareondersteuning is de Matrox G400, eerder had je een inelkaargeknutselde driver van een hobbyist nodig, de Rage 128pro en een flink aantal geluidskaarten. De GeForce wordt niet native ondersteund, maar je kan 'm wel in Vesa mode gebruiken.

Er zijn een flink aantal leuke nieuwe features, zoals standandaard een MP3 decoder (in de niet-gratis versie zit ook een Encoder). Mouse wheel support (eindelijk), softmodem support (Lucent en PC-Tel), een betere Development Environment en FireWire support. NetPositive (de standaard-BeOS browser) is ook geupdate, en je kan nu ook CD'tjes bakken. In short: Leuk om te proberen, toch?

De mensen die de BeOS readylist willen lezen kunnen dat hier doen.

Martijn schrijft: "Aangezien ik zelf erg nieuwsgierig was naar dit bord, besloot ik Abit zelf maar even op te bellen...

Na een paar keer doorverbonden te zijn kreeg ik een Engelse medewerker aan de lijn die me vertelde dat de KA7 midden april in ons kleine kikkerlandje zal arriveren. De massaproduktie was nog niet begonnen, maar de start daarvan zou niet lang meer op zich laten wachten. Wat hij tegensprak was dat er twee versies komen, één met en één zonder de ATA100 controller van Highpoint. Volgens hem komt er maar één Abit KA7 en dat is het model dat op de Abit site staat, dus degene zonder de HPT370 controller. Een prijsindicaties konden ze helaas nog niet geven".

There will be two version of the KA7, one is the original that you saw, and the other is the KA7 100, which has the Highpoint ATA100 chip on board.

De KA7 printplaat heeft bovendien niet zomaar uitsparingen voor een HighPoint controller en twee extra ATA100 connectors. Het lijkt me volkomen logisch dat de KA7 100 gewoon gaat komen.

Vince Freeman van Sharky Extreme heeft een review geschreven van de MSI BX Master. Het plankje is uitgerust met 6 PCI sloten, 1 ISA slot, 1 AGP slot, 4 dimm sloten en een Promise ATA-66 controller.

The MSI BXMaster is on the high-end of the BX motherboard market and its price reflects this. A standard BX motherboard like the Abit BF6 or MSI MS-6163Pro can be found for between $90-$100, but the BXMaster's extra DIMM and PCI slot, along with the on-board Promise ATA-66 controller, add quite a bit to the price. Online BXMaster prices are in the $130 range, and slightly more expensive than the similarly ATA-66 equipped Abit BE6-II. Then again, while the BE6-II does feature ATA-66 support, it has one less DIMM socket and PCI slot than the BXMaster. Like everything else in life, if you want the best of any given product line, you'll need to pay a premium to get it.

[...] Although MSI has thrown everything but the kitchen sink into the BXMaster, it still falls a bit short in the features department. This is mostly due to the inherent limitations of the Intel BX chipset, such as being limited to a 2/3 AGP divider and PC100 memory support. This doesn't mean you can't clock higher than a 100 MHz FSB, but in doing so, you will be running the AGP bus at a high, out-of-spec speed. Newer motherboard chipsets like the i820, i810E, and VIA 133/A offer a 1/2 AGP divider, meaning that the BXMaster doesn't utilize the 133-155 MHz FSB quite as nicely as the newer chipsets. To add further difficulties, MSI has still not shown the true AGP speed or even the divider in the BIOS and you'll require the included software, or other 3rd-party utilities, to determine the current AGP speed. Again, due to the architecture of the BX chipset, the BXMaster's AGP slot supports only AGP 2X, and not 4X.

[...] With excellent performance, Coppermine compatibility, ATA-66 support and overclocking options to spare, the BXMaster certainly lives up to its name and is probably the most complete BX motherboard on the market. Other than the inherent architecture of the BX chipset, there's not a whole lot not to like about this board. Micro-Star deserves top marks for taking the BX chipset about as far as it can go, and the BXMaster stands as the crowning achievement in the popular MS-6163 line.

Het plankje mag dan nog wel zo mooi zijn maar het ontbreken van de 1/2 AGP divider en 4x AGP support zijn toch wel een nadeel (limitatie iBX440 chipset).

The Register meldt dat de Mobile CPU's van Intel omlaag in prijs gaan, de prijzen gaan gemiddeld zo'n 100 a 200 dollar naar beneden .

The biggest price decreases occur on the 650MHz 0.18 micron Pentium III, which sees its price fall from $637 to $426 today, a drop of 34 per cent. The 600MHz processor which also uses SpeedStep falls from $423 to $316, a drop of 25 per cent.

The 500MHz LV (low voltage) chip using the 0.18 micron process falls from $294 to $241, an 18 per cent fall, while the 500MHz vanilla 0.18 micron chip now costs $198, a drop of 19 per cent on its former price of $245.

The Celeron mobile processors, already aggressively priced, see the following changes. The 500MHz 0.18 micron part drops by 16 per cent from $134 to $112, the 466MHz 0.25 micron chip remains at $96, the 450MHz 0.18 micron mobile Celeron falls by 11 per cent from $96 to $85, while the mobile Celeron, the 433MHz which uses 0.25 micron technology also remains static at $75.

Dit is natuurlijk goed nieuws voor alle tweakers die hun notebookje aan het tweaken waren totdat ze ineens merkten dat een overgeclockte cpu aardig warm wordt (werd) in een notebookje .

SLaSH! schrijft dat er een speciaal Europees onderzoekscomité komt om te onderzoeken of het spionagenetwerk Echelon ook wordt gebruikt voor bedrijfsspionage:

Het Europees Parlement zal op 30 maart meer details over het onderzoekscomité bekendmaken. Dit heeft een woordvoerder van eurocommissaris Erkki Liikanen tegenover de internationale nieuwsdienst van IDG verklaard.

Op die datum vindt een plenaire vergadering van het europarlement plaats waarbij zowel de Europese Commissie als de vertegenwoordigers van de 15 lidstaten hun licht over het spionagenetwerk Echelon zullen laten schijnen.

Officieel is het door de VS geëntameerde Echelon-project – een netwerk van supercomputers en satellieten – bedoeld voor het afluisteren en bestrijden van terroristen, drugshandelaren en geldwitwassers. Iedere vorm van elektronische communicatie kan in principe door Echelon worden onderschept. De geruchten dat Echelon ook wordt gebruikt voor het achterhalen van industriële geheimen van Europese bedrijven zijn echter altijd hardnekkig geweest.

Bikkeltje wees erop dat Seagate onlangs het IBM's "areal" density record van 14.3 miljard bits per vierkante inch ruim verbroken heeft: het is Seagate gelukt om op een vierkante inch 45 miljard bits vast te leggen.

Seagate Technology, Inc. today announced that Company technologists have demonstrated the world's highest data storage capacity of 45 billion data bits (45Gb/in2) stored in one square inch of recording media. This achievement almost doubles the density set by Seagate previously and is the third world record established by Seagate in just over one year. With both enterprise and Internet e-business markets growing rapidly, as well as the emerging boom in consumer and home appliances using disc drives for storage, the need to store and retrieve ever larger amounts of data continues to be critical.

The 45Gb/in2 areal density record means that more than 60 gigabytes of information can be stored on a single 3.5" disc. Andy van BXBoards heeft zijn review van de AOpen AK72 online geplant. De stabiliteit van de plank blijft volgens hem achter bij de Epox 7KXA en ook is de layout niet geweldig. Het AMR slot bevindt zich op een foute plek en er zijn maar 2 fan headers, waarvan 1 onbereikbaar voor CPU fans:

This is a board that somehow flatters to deceive. Its fair to say that AOpen have been one of the most consistent deliverers of quality mainboards, so perhaps our expectations were a little high, but take away the inevitable excitement the new chipset will generate, and we are left with a product that somehow misses the mark. Overclocked stability is not as good as the Epox K7XA - while the Epox board will run our test Athlon 650 at 745/115 all day, during benchmarking on the AK72 we were often met with freezes or spontaneous reboots. Even the unlimited voltage tweaks do not help overclocked stability. Taking our 650 up to 1.9v (something I am not comfortable with doing for long periods) the board was not stable with an overclocked Athlon at either 110 or 115 Mhz.

On applications scores the AK72 does deliver even when non overclocked. The performance is ever so slightly better across the board that the Epox K7XA. Performance is generally very good, and non overclocked product stability was just fine, with no sign of the reboots that occur at higher bus speeds. If overclocking is not a huge factor, there is little in AOpen's design to fault

Bij Hardwareinfo.net is een review te vinden van de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset, die zoals bekend een perfect alternatief is voor de geflopte i820 chipset. Uit de test blijkt dat de VIA chipset (in tegenstelling tot Intel's i820) namelijk geen moeite om het niveau van de oude BX chipset te evenaren:

Ik denk dat de conclusie van het verhaal duidelijk is: de BX-chipset is achterhaald, de performance van de 820-chipset is veel de laag en VIA’s oude chipset was niet meer dan een probeersel om ook bij de “grote jongens” te horen. De chipset die overblijft is zonder twijfel absoluut het meest ideale platform voor de 133 MHz FSB Intel CPU’s: de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Nogmaals de grote voordelen van deze nieuwe chipset:

1. De chipset biedt alle nieuwe specificaties (Ultra ATA/66, AGP 4X, etc.) die de BX-chipset moet missen en de 820-chipset wel heeft.
2. Door de rechtstreekse SD-Ram aansturing streeft deze chipset qua performance de 820-chipset met SD-Ram combinatie ver voorbij om bij gelijkwaardige performance als bij de BX-chipset uit te komen.
3. Moederborden met deze VIA chipset zijn ook nog eens een stuk goedkope dat moederborden met Intel chipset.

Wat mij betreft is de keuze dus snel gemaakt. Normaal ben ik een beetje huiverig voor keiharde aankoop-adviezen, maar in dit geval kan ik iedereen die een nieuw moederbord voor een Pentium III processor zoekt toch echt aanraden om de Intel 820 chipset links te laten liggen de voor een bord met VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset te gaan. Voor het eerst sinds lange tijd is het niet meer Intel die de meest ideale chipset voor hun eigen CPU’s maakt.

GamePC heeft een roundup gepost tussen de beste A3D en EAX geluidskaarten van het jaar 2000 (geen Soundblaster Live dus). De kaarten die getest werden zijn: de Turtle Beach Montego II Plus, de S3/Diamond Monster Sound MX400, de Guillemot Fortissimo, de Aureal SQ1500 en de Aureal SQ2500.

These audio cards share some similar features. They all have four-speaker outputs. All of them have a S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) outputs for connecting to high-end receivers and mini-disc players. Both of these trends are very positive especially for the budget solutions. A note about this output: capable software DVD players (the latest Cyberlink PowerDVD and WinDVD are examples) allow for AC-3 pass-through. This enables the sound card to pass the digital audio signal for Dolby Digital to be decoded by an external receiver. Stereo output may also be played through this, including standard DirectSound outputs from Windows and any two-speaker output. However, four-speaker outputs are not supported through the S/PDIF output. A S/PDIF and receiver combination can only be used for either Dolby encoder signals or stereo outputs. So if you're looking forward to some 4+ speaker action via your brand new receiver, you're out of luck. Hopefully, Microsoft will add this capability to DirectSound, but it is highly unlikely since it would involve having to encode to Dolby. This is very CPU intensive and would cause quite a bit of delay.

All of these cards support a 3D audio API in one form or another. Aureal's A3D and Creative's EAX are the two major 3D audio APIs that gather the most headlines. A3D 2.0 is based on a more geometric and physic-based approach, while EAX relies on reverberations and reflections to add depth to audio. Which is better? I leave that up to the users. I personally like the A3D system a little better, but there are times when the EAX settings are very, very effective.

3dfx heeft bekend gemaakt dat het voor 186 miljoen dollar eigenaar wordt van GigaPixel. Dit bedrijf heeft op tiling technologie gebaseerde videochip in ontwikkeling, waarbij alleen zichtbare pixels worden gerenderd (de twee keer geflopte Videologic PowerVR doet dat ook). Op die manier kan veel geheugen bandbreedte bespaard worden. GigaPixel was een kandidaat voor de levering van de X-Box video chip, maar verloor deze deal (die ging zoals bekend naar nVidia). Afgaande op de press release lijkt het erop dat 3dfx nu ook van plan is om tiled rendering toe te passen:

Volgens betrouwbare bronnen van MacOS Rumors worden er dankzij AltiVec optimalisaties in de MacOS X Aqua interface indrukwekkende snelheidsverbeteringen van een faktor 5 tot 10 behaald. Ook de boot-up en opstarttijden van programma's kunnen met behulp van AltiVec acceleratie merkbaar versneld worden:

Reliable sources close to the Darwin project and privvy to many of the technical details of recent builds of OS X have reported that with Beta now closing in on release, Altivec/Velocity Engine optimization has begun in earnest.

Apparently, these early G4 optimizations have accelerated the responsiveness of the Aqua interface by a factor of five to ten over G3s at indentical clock rates, and system boot-up times by 25-30%. Application launches are approximately twice as fast (with apps needing large memory allocations benefitting the most); sources at a major graphics application maker who shall remain nameless report that their popular application boots in 1/3 the time, and overall performance is improved by an average of 30% over their already Altivec-accelerated OS9 version.

There are reportedly still several major bugs related to Altivec and Altivec-enhanced memory management in OS X as it stands on Apple's internal development servers, but if these numbers bear out in the Beta release, momentum for Consumer may begin to pick up earlier and with more force than even the most optimistic of us had hoped.

ctkurve is a rather old c't-tool (about 8 years now, first results are published in ct 11/92) but the last versions (until V4.1) were only available for subscribers on the so called ctsi-CD. But I will put Version 4.3 on our Website asap. It still uses the old fashioned REP MOVSD and neither 3Dnow nor SSE improvements (there is a new yet unpublished "c't memory workbench", which can do all of this stuff and much more ...).

The addresses of the tranferred 1 KByte blocs are randomly choosen within an address range (with a given alignment)in such a way, that the random number generator does not provoke cache misses and takes only a little, constant amount of time.

These ctkurve transfers are a mixture of reads, writes (on modern processors with write allocation) and castoffs (when cachemisses occur and dirty cachelines have to be replaced) so the value does not represent a memory or cache bandwidth but include the ability of processor, chipset and memory to handle those mixed accesses.

Arjan en FreeRider brachten tegelijk het nieuws dat Microsoft een Technology Preview versie gereleased heeft van Windows Media Player 7.
Met een hele reeks nieuwe features probeert Microsoft marktaandeel op RealPlayer te winnen. Een van de opvallendste veranderingen is wel de compleet nieuwe interface, die ook skins ondersteunt:
