Betanews weet te vertellen dat Microsoft vandaag de eerste beta van Windows Millenium zal releasen. Eerlijkgezegd heb ik nog helemaal nooit van dit OS gehoord...

We have several reports that Microsoft testers will be able to download the first beta of Microsoft Windows Millennium and CDs will be sent to testers tomorrow. Windows Millennium may be the do or die project for Microsoft, as many OS competetors are starting to emerge. A couple of speculated features of Windows Millennium is no more Start menu and no legacy DOS support. These should make this the most stable and robust OS Microsoft has ever offered. Stay tuned for more information as it comes out. [break]Hmm, is er leven zonder Start Menu? Nog een update van Betanews: [/break] Many of you are wondering when Microsoft is going to open up Winbeta and let testers download the new version of Microsoft Windows. All we can say right now is that it should be expected around 4PM Microsoft Time (Pacific Time). Remember, you heard this news on BetaNews.Com first, and we will keep you posted on any new news of this important event.

According to the internal documents, if Millennium becomes extremely incompatible due to the lack of legacy support, a service pack will be released in 2001 re-adding support for the 16-bit backend.

FF nog wat xtra stuff van betanews:
----------------------------------
Before I get to that though, I need to clear up some information about Windows Millennium, posted by one of the people holding fort while Chris and I were away. There is a release slated for sometime today, although this will not be classified as a beta. Ten days ago, Microsoft finalized the first Windows Millennium Developers Release, build 2332.2. This is the build that will be released to testers, not Beta 1. A story will follow with more detailed information BetaNews has obtained, including release plans Microsoft has for the future. I apologize for the confusion.
-----------------------------
With increased competition and changes in the marketplace, Microsoft has decided that the operating system must change to meet consumer demand. As previously reported, another incarnation of the old 9x codebase will be developed as Consumer Windows, codenamed Millennium. Millennium is slated to be released next year and will be one of the most important projects Microsoft has ever undertaken. The success or lack thereof of Millennium is sure to influence Microsoft's future operating system development.
