De mannen van Gamers Depot hebben vandaag de eerste review online gezet over de eerste Pentium 4 plank van Gigabyte, de GA-8TX. De plank is uitgerust met 1 AGP Pro, 1 CNR, 5 PCI en 4 Rambus sloten. Verder is de plank in het bezit van de Dual BIOS feature van Gigabyte zodat zo af en toe iets fout mag doen tijdens het flashen van je BIOS. Ook handig is dat het moederbord in een normale ATX kast past, dit zelfs zonder een speciale backplate. In de benchmarks komt het bord jammer genoeg niet overal als beste uit de bus, maar met een prijs van 'slechts' 238 dollar en de bovengenoemde features is het volgens de reviewer zeker een goede plank :

With advanced features like a dual BIOS rock solid stability, it's hard to find much wrong with the GA-8TX. However, it's not completely without faults. While we do like its OpenGL performance, we were somewhat dismayed by its Direct3D performance. And what gives with using dipswitches on the board to complete the overclocking process? Isn't this the year 2001 now? We should be way beyond being bound to motherboard jumpers and/or dipswitches.

We also liked how this board easily mounts into any ATX case. This feature alone might make it the board of choice for those looking for an easy way to upgrade their PC without having to either buy a new case or mess around with a backplate as we see on the ASUS P4T.

We also were able to find this board on the web for $238.00, which is quite a bit lower than the lowest price we found for the ASUS P4T at $264.00. Given this board's advanced features, ease of installation, OpenGL performance, stability, and price, we can give it a full recommendation as a viable solution to those looking at jumping into the world of the Pentium 4.

Volgens dit bericht op AMD Zone heeft Intel in een brief aan retailers van haar processoren aangekondigd dat zogenaamde "Mystery Shoppers" de winkels gaan vereren met een bezoekje. Deze als normale klanten vermomde Intel medewerkers zullen dan kijken of de verkopers wel de juiste dingen zeggen over de Pentium III en de Pentium 4 processors.

Op zich is dat natuurlijk niet zo erg, maar Intel heeft wel erg strakke ideëen over wat de verkopers zouden moeten zeggen. De verkopers zouden, volgens de brief, een aantal zinnetjes uit hun hoofd moeten leren en die letterlijk aan de klanten overbrengen. Blijkt één van die klanten een Intel Mystery Shopper te zijn, dan kunnen de verkopers kans maken op leuke prijzen.

HardwareZone.com heeft eens goed geluisterd naar de Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 speakerset. Deze set van Creative Labs is, zoals gebruikelijk, in samenwerking met Cambridge Soundworks ontwikkeld. De DTT3500 is de opvolger van de al wat oudere DTT2500 en is ook een stuk duurder dan z'n voorganger. Net als de DTT2500 bestaat deze set uit vier satellietspeakers, een centerspeaker en een subwoofer. Het vermogen (RMS) van de satellietjes is 7 Watt, de centerspeaker 21 Watt en de subwoofer 30 Watt.

Naast de speakers krijg je er natuurlijk ook een Dolby Digital decoder bij, die over zowel een optische als coaxiale digitale ingang (DIN) beschikt. De DTT3500 kan naast de PC ook op gameconsoles, stand-alone DVD spelers, Minidisc en MP3 spelers worden aangesloten. Creative heeft veel aandacht besteed aan een goede opstelling van de speakers. Met de speciale driepoten kun je de speakers optimaal positioneren. Een extraatje ten opzichte van de DTT2500 is dat bij deze set ook een afstandbediening wordt geleverd. Over de geluidskwaliteit van de DTT3500 is men niet helemaal tevreden:

I then fired up some jazz and classical pieces on the DTT3500 using only Stereo mode. The bass quality was again flat and bland. Midrange and treble was available in abundance and this made the system sound noisy and harsh. Listening to jazz and classical pieces on the DTT3500 is simply not advisable. I get the feeling that the power amplifier built inside the decoder unit is incapable of delivering enough power to the subwoofer. The system sounded bad and out of balance. Even with pop and rock music, the DTT3500 only made enough noise to annoy my colleagues. Only when the subwoofer volume was yanked to its maximum did the DTT3500 sounded much better. Still, the strong midrange output made listening to the DTT3500 uncomfortable.

Although there is principally nothing wrong with the operation of the speaker system, it just did not sound as good as it's supposed to be. Even my older Cambridge Soundworks' FPS2000 sounded a lot better in just normal music playback. The DTT3500 is only good for its Digital DIN interface with the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 series and its beautifully designed Dolby Digital decoding unit. You can still get decent "theatre" quality playback with Dolby Digital movies, but that is as far as I will go with the DTT3500.

Speaking at an Internet conference hosted by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Steve Ballmer said that both Unix and Linux threaten Windows' stronghold in the marketplace, but that the latter is the bigger headache.

Many observers consider Linux 2.4, which was released late last week, to be a much-improved operating system kernel that can compete more aggressively against Windows 2000 and Unix in the enterprise market.

"I think you have to rate competitors that threaten your core higher than you rate competitors where you're trying to take from them," Ballmer said. "It puts the Linux phenomenon and the Unix phenomenon at the top of the list. I'd put the Linux phenomenon really as threat No. 1."

The Register geeft een kort overzicht van het aantal 'defacements' van diverse webservers. Uit de nuchtere cijfers blijken Windows-gebaseerde webservers veruit het meest gehackt te worden: zo'n 60% van alle defacements komt voor rekening van Windows NT en Windows 2000 servers. Linux-gebaseerde servers 'doen' 21,4% van het totaal.

Deze percentages hebben overigens betrekking op het absolute aantal defacements, wie bedenkt dat MS-gebaseerde webservers een veel lager marktaandeel (de schatting is 30% marktaandeel) hebben dan - met name - Linux-servers kan natuurlijk al snel concluderen dat Windows-servers relatief gezien nog veel vaker gedefaced worden.

Onderstaande tabel verduidelijkt het een en ander nog eens grafisch, bovendien kun je aardig wat schommelingen zien in het aantal defacements per OS. Zo blijkt in de maanden augustus en september van vorig jaar het aantal defacements van Windows en Linux-servers vrijwel gelijk te liggen, terwijl de Windows-gebaseerde servers momenteel weer 'populairder' zijn bij de hackertjes.

Hacker site attrition.org today published its latest stats for defacements. Combined Windows NT and Windows 2000 defacements for the most recent full month of December hit more than two thirds of the total. Combined Linux servers account for 21.4 per cent of confirmed defacements. NT's defacement share had dipped alarmingly below 40 per cent last autumn, but made a strong recovery in time for Christmas.

Er viel zojuist een press release van Matrox in m'n mailbox over de DH-Max videokaart voor de PowerMac G4 en G4 Cube. De DH-Max is een 32MB AGP videokaart gebaseerd op de G400 en in het bezit van de geliefde DualHead functionaliteit. De kaart is in het bezit van een 300MHz RAMDAC en drivers met DualHead ondersteuning. DVI en 3D ondersteuning zit voorlopig nog niet in de drivers gebakken.

Goed nieuws dus voor de Mac liefhebbers, naast de Radeon en GeForce2 MX komt er nu ook een kaart gebaseerd op Matrox technologie. De Mac wordt veel gebruikt voor grafisch werk zoals fotosjoppen, en voor dit soort toepassingen is DualHead natuurlijk ideaal. Jammer is dat de kaart alleen verkrijgbaar is via Macintosh reseller ProMax Systems:

In een press release van gisteren heeft Quantum3D aangekondigd een samen-werkingsverband met nVidia te hebben opgezet. Ineens blijkt dat nVidia ook van plan is Voodoo3 en VSA-100 van 3dfx te kopen, zodat deze voor Quantum3D's AAlchemy kaarten geproduceerd en geleverd kunnen worden. Verder zal nVidia chips gaan ontwikkelen voor volgende generaties van Quantum3D's videosystemen:

In het kader van "werk samen of neem elkaar over" weer eens goed nieuws: Intel en ATi nemen cross-licenties op elkaars patenten. Nu zou Intel dus videokaarten met de Radeon-chip kunnen maken en ATi chipsets voor Intel met geïntegreerde Radeon-chips:

The cross-license agreement grants each company rights to certain patents owned by the other. This will help ATI and Intel to incorporate new features and technologies into their products, significantly benefiting their customers. ATI has also negotiated the right to build integrated chipsets for Intel microprocessor platforms. Additional details of the agreement were not disclosed.

"ATI and Intel are recognized technology and market leaders in their respective categories and this agreement will enable both companies to build upon those unique strengths"

Overclockers Online heeft een aantal benchmarks losgelaten op versie 4.25a, 4.26a, 4.27a en de meeste recente 4.28a van VIA's 4-in-1 drivers. Om een beeld van de performance te krijgen werden SiSoft Sandra en 3DMark2000 losgelaten op een Abit KT7 RAID met daarop een Duron 600@1000MHz. De hogere versienummers van de drivers blijken een kleine, maar duidelijke, winst in snelheid te geven. Helaas hebben sommige versies daarvoor stabiliteit opgeofferd. De conclusie is dan ook als volgt:

The new 4.28a seem to be very stable, but since I only installed these new drivers a day ago there might be problems with them I have not yet encountered. Version 4.26a is, for me anyway, not so stable as it made my system reboot at random moments without me modding anything but the VIA drivers.

My advice? If you are having no stability problems with your current setup, I would not update your VIA 4 in 1 drivers unless you feel brave and you want to test everything for yourself. If you do have problems with your system, I suggest you try the latest 4.28a drivers as they seem to be very stable.

Dennis was zo vriendelijk om ons naar StandardNET te wijzen waar informatie is te vinden over een nieuwe serie producten van Iomega. Het gaat om de Peerless drive die deze zomer op de markt moet komen, die cartridges met een capaciteit van 5, 10 of 20GB kan lezen en schrijven met een snelheid van 15MB/s:

The move to home entertainment is a new strategy by Iomega to show it can offer more than the original Zip drives that put it in business. The portable Peerless drive features a spinning drive much like the one used in computers. The Peerless drives will come in three sizes: 5, 10 or 20 gigabytes. It will sell for as much as $450.

Iomega says the cartridges are shock-, skip- and temperature-resistant. It hopes the technology catches on so other companies can make video players, car stereos or television viewers using the Peerless system.

Bij de release zullen USB en FireWire versies van de drive beschikbaar zijn, USB 2.0 en SCSI uitvoeringen laten nog even op zich wachten. Voor een 5GB disk betaal je $129 en voor de vier keer zo grote 20GB schijf slechts $70 extra.

Naast AMD 760 en ALi MaGiK 1 zal er binnenkort nog een derde Socket A DDR chipset verschijnen, VIA's Apollo KT266. X-Bit Labs heeft wat informatie over wat hoogstwaarschijnlijk het eerste KT266 moederbord gaat worden: de Epox EP-8KHA. Dankzij de nauwe samenwerking van Epox met VIA waren ze bijvoorbeeld ook de eerste met een KT133A moederbord, daarom wordt verwacht dat deze plank nog voor het einde van het eerste kwartaal zal verschijnen. De specificaties liegen er niet om, maar de vraag is of KT266 wél significant sneller is dan KT133A:

Hij was in november al door Siemens aangekondigd, maar nu is ie dan ook echt verkrijgbaar: De Siemens SL45. Na de Samsung SGH-M100 is dit de tweede in Nederland verkrijgbare combo van GSM en MP3-speler. Hij werkt met MultimediaCards, waarvan de capaciteit al tot 128 MB reikt. Voor mensen die overal in hun kast de temperatuur willen meten en geen zin hebben om tientallen sensors te plaatsen is er een handig apparaat op de markt: De Raytek MiniTemp MT4. Doormiddel van een laser bepaalt het apparaatje de temperatuur op een bepaald punt. Binnen een halve seconde weet je wat de temperatuur is van het oppervlak waarop je gericht hebt. Tweaktown geeft het apparaatje in deze review een 9 en claimt dat het in veel gevallen beter werkt dan een thermal probe:

The MT4 has an option of changing the temperature unit from the default setting of Celsius to Fahrenheit. This can be changed with a simple flip switch, just below the red trigger inside the casing of the gun. This features makes the MT4 internationally-friendly with support for both units, which various countries use as their "official" standard.

The temperature is displayed on a LCD display (which can be seen in the picture above) which is position on the back of the gun. The font size of the numbers are large and easy to read. The display screen is roughly 1cm by 2cm and is pretty much your standard LCD display screen. It also has a feature which could be considered "power saving mode" the display switches off automatically after about 6 to 7 seconds of inactivity, all you need to do is "point and shoot" and the display is active again. If you hold the trigger down and move it over different objects it will update quicker and allow you to find "hot spots" quicker, then depressing the trigger all the time.

Wie wel eens een echt snelle machine wil hebben voor het bijhouden van z'n huishoudboekje en geen genoegen kan nemen met een 1.2GHz (o.i.d.) systeempje heeft een probleem: wil je sneller of wil je meer, dan gaat dat meteen extreem veel geld kosten . Voor al diegenen komt de Amerikaanse firma Microway met een oplossing: een 'personal Linux cluster', bestaande uit 3x800MHz P3-systemen plus alle benodige (netwerk)hardware en natuurlijk Linux om de boel te laten draaien!

Voor de die-hard tweaker is dit systeem misschien niet zo interessant, want overklokken met ServerWorks chipsetjes is over 't algemeen niet zo goed mogelijk, maar een belangrijke upgrade is er nog wel: d'r kunnen nog eens 3 P3's bijgeprikt worden, en dat verdubbelt je power natuurlijk bijna! Uit het persbericht nog even wat meer info over al dit moois:

Natuurlijk zijn dit soort machines voornamelijk bedoeld voor mensen die veel raytracen of andere zware klussen te klaren hebben natuurlijk . Geïnteresseerd? Wees er wel op bedacht dat dit beestje in de V.S. voor $4995,- wordt aangeboden, dus echt goedkoop is 't niet. Trouwens, in Nederland is 'ie niet verkrijgbaar, maar mooi blijft 'ie natuurlijk wel .

Hadden we vorige week nog een review op Hardware Central, nu verblijdt Sharky Extreme ons met de zoveelste review van deze alleskunner van ATi. En meekomen kan 'ie ook, getuige onderstaand tabelletje. De kaart komt als bijzonder goed uit de test en krijgt zelfs de "Extreme Hardware Award".

Interessante punten: de kaart kan op 3D gebied in maximale kwaliteit de GeForce2 GTS goed bijhouden, de kaart is ondanks zijn 6ns geheugen goed overklokbaar (tot zelfs over de 64MB DDR!), goede tv in en out kwaliteit (beter dan de Asus V7700 DeLuxe, alleen slecht voor tekst) en eerste klas DVD functies:

Wie dus 'in de markt' is voor een multi (mediaal) talent doet er goed aan om deze ATi All-in-Wonder eens nader onder de loep te nemen dus! Nu maar hopen dat 'ie snel leverbaar wordt en natuurlijk tegen een interessante prijs . RoRuPC had de eer om een interview af te mogen nemen met iemand van nVidia. Ze stelden vooral vragen over de toekomstplannen van nVidia. nVidia heeft redelijk grootse toekomstplannen, ze willen graag alle aspecten van de markt in hun assortiment gaan stoppen. Uit een van de antwoorden blijkt ook dat nVidia graag de laptop markt op wil:

We have a mobile chip already which we are working with Toshiba for their laptops. Soon afterwards, we will be working with other OEM's to bring the Geforce 2 GO into all laptops and make the Geforce 2 GO mobile chip the mainstream mobile chip for the laptop market.
