Vandaag hebben nVidia en Apple op de MacWorld Expo bekend gemaakt dat de nieuwe PowerMac G4 uitgerust zal worden met een GeForce2 MX. Niet alle nieuwe PowerMac's zullen uitgerust worden met een GeForce2 MX, ATi blijft gewoon vertegenwoordigd met haar Rage 128 en Radeon videokaarten. De enige gegevens die voorlopig bekend zijn is dat het gaat om een 32MB GeForce2 MX, en als we afgaan op het plaatje op de Apple site zal de kaart uitgerust worden met een D-Sub en DVI aansluiting. De PowerMac modellen met een 466MHz CPU en 533MHz CPU zijn meteen leverbaar en de modellen met een 667 of 733MHz processor komen in de loop van februari in de winkel:

Mensen die vandaag de dag een Socket A systeem willen kopen staan voor de lastige keuze van de juiste chipset. De KT133A is net uit en over een niet al te lange tijd zullen ook DDR moederborden te koop zijn. De derde optie is de oude vertrouwde KT133. HardOCP probeert de keuze makkelijker te maken door middel van een artikel waarin de drie chipsets met elkaar worden vergeleken. Benchmarks als Sandra, 3D Winbench, 3DMark en Quake3 worden gebruikt om een beeld te vormen van de verschillen in performance. Uit de test bleek dat de KT133A bijna evengoed, zoniet beter, dan de plank met ALi MaGiK 1 chipset en DDR geheugen presteerde:

In closing, the ALi DDR chipset is faster than the KT133, but not by much. It also looks as if the KT133A will be faster than either of them. If you are going to build yourself a new system now and want to go the AMD route, my money is on the soon-to-be released KT133A mainboards. I hope the VIA Apollo Pro266 DDR chipset really pulls a rabbit out of its hat and surprises me with its performance, because otherwise it is just not going to be that exciting. Is that to say that DDR technology is a wash? Of course not. The 200MHz and 266MHz platforms are simply a starting place for DDR technology, a technology which will undoubtedly improve and become more mainstream over time. This is almost guaranteed due to the low overall cost that this can be done at along the way.

Als verdediging voor het DDR platform moet er nog wel even bijgezegd worden dat het gebruikte Iwill KA266R moederbord geen final versie was.

Bij OnePC is een review verschenen van de PowerColor Evil Kyro. De Kyro chip is de derde uit de PowerVR generatie van STMicroelectronics/Imagination Technologies. Als je kijkt naar de prijs moet de Evil Kyro concurreren met de GeForce2 MX plankjes. Deze kaart beschikt over 32MB 6ns SDRAM en een AGP2X/4X interface. Zowel de core als het geheugen werken op 110MHz en zijn gesynchroniseerd. In het 13 pagina's lange artikel wordt ook uitgelegd wat Tile-Base Rendering is:

At $139, the Evil KYRO is priced right between the ranks of NVIDIA's GeForce2 MX and GeForce2 GTS products. Likewise, the performance level of the Evil KYRO, as we had witnessed throughout our benchmark results, showed that the Evil KYRO performs, on average, slightly better than PowerColor's own GeForce2 MX card--that is, depending on what color-depth you normally play in. If you're running your games at 16-bit color all the time and don't think 32-bit will ever make a difference for you, then the Evil KYRO is not your card and I would suggest sticking with a "traditional" card such as the GeForce2 MX or maybe even the GTS if you have the cash. If, however, you're like me and always runs games at 32-bit whenever possible, then you're sure to see a performance benefit from the Evil KYRO over "traditional" cards.

The KYRO's tile-based rendering engine is truely a work of art that, like all hardware technologies, must be embraced by game developers for one to truely see its advantages. As we saw from our benchmarks, current games such as Quake 3: Arena and Unreal Tournament take little advantage of the KYRO's tile-based rendering technique and such, doesn't allow it to perform up to its full potential. On the other hand, if, someday, we find a game that has the same amount of overdraw as the amount we saw in the VillageMark benchmark, then, according to the results obtained from running VillageMark, the KYRO will reign supreme.

Will games in the future embark on the advantages of tile-based rendering? It will take at least a year or two, if we consider the amount of time that NVIDIA's hardware T&L has taken to catch on, until we actually will see games popping up on store shelves utilizing killer overdraw, multiple texture layers and huge textures altogether. Until those games begin to surface, the Evil KYRO's only advantage now would be in its blazing-fast 32-bit rendering, a feature that I feel is very-much needed; but once they do, we will finally see that elegance will out-perform power.

Het volk van Tweak3D heeft een review gemaakt van de Card Cooler MaxCool case. Dit is eigenlijk de Addtronics 6896A met wat extra fans . Voor de Max Cool versie moet je wel 87 dollar meer betalen ($219), maar gezien het aantal fans dat is toegevoegd is dit een nette prijs. Je krijgt namelijk vier 120x25mm Low Speed Sunon Ball Bearing fans (35,5 dba), één 92x25mm Sunon Ball Bearing fan (33 dba), één 80x25mm Sunon Ball Bearing fan (32,5 dba) en drie Chrome fan grills:

Leave it to The Card Cooler to make a great product even better. Professionally cut holes and fans mounted with care put it over the top in my book. An experienced case modder would even be impressed by the quality. At first I thought the price was kind of high, but then I added up the costs of the case and all the fans. It came to right around what Card Cooler is charging (not including labor for cutting all those holes!). Don't get me wrong, this case isn't in everybody's price range, but all in all I love it. I don't know how I can possibly go back to a normal full-tower case now that I have been spoiled by the Max Cool case. If you can afford the best, I heartily recommend it.

WebWereld meldt dat Sony zijn minidisc-systeem heeft aangepast, opdat er nog meer muziek op een schijfje past. Op dit moment kan er zo'n 74 minuten opgeslagen worden. Sony wil dat oprekken tot vijf uur. Hiervoor gaat Sony een nieuwe compressietechniek toepassen. De nieuwe apparaten zijn backwards-compatible, dus je kunt nog wel je oude schijfjes in de nieuwe speler afspelen. Voor 250 dollar zal het apparaat in maart op de markt worden gebracht. Ook wordt in het artikel gemeld dat Sony concurrentie krijgt van DataPlay. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel:

Sony krijgt concurrentie voor zijn minidisc. DataPlay, een bedrijf uit de Verenigde Staten, zet stevig in met een multimediaal opslagmedium. In oktober vorig jaar maakte het bedrijf de eerste gegevens bekend van het schijfje ter grootte van een rijksdaalder. In Las Vegas toonde het bedrijf de disc en een speler van SonicBlue. Op het schijfje past zo'n 500 MB aan gegevens, genoeg voor ongeveer 11 uur muziek in MP3-formaat of zo'n 250 foto's in hoge resolutie.

Enkele grote bedrijven als Universal Music Group, Creative Labs, Samsung en Toshiba hebben al interesse getoond in de vinding van DataPlay. Dan Mepham van HardwareCentral trakteert ons op een review van de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60. Deze harddisk heeft, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, een capaciteit van 60GB (3 platters van 20GB), een ATA100 interface, 7200rpm, een cache van 2MB en maakt gebruik van Maxtor's Acoustic Management Technology. Met deze technologie kun je een keuze maken tussen een hogere performance en minder lawaai, maar de reviewer vindt dat de drive zelf in high performance mode weinig lawaai maakt:

In summary, Maxtor has done an excellent job with the DiamondMax Plus 60. It is able to hang tough with the Deskstar 75GXP, and even noticeably surpass it in some cases. For general apps or gaming, we’d still recommend the Deskstar 75GXP, but for any sort of A/V editing, or even working with large image files, the DM60+ is the better option--it could literally save you hours. Either way, it's difficult to imagine anyone being disappointed with either drive. A job well-done by Maxtor.

Volgens dit artikel bij ZDNet heeft Microsoft bevestigd dat Windows XP op 29 oktober gelanceerd zal worden. Uiterlijk op 25 augustus zal het bedrijf de 'gold code' afleveren waarna pc-fabrikanten hun voorbereidingen kunnen treffen. Zij kunnen dus nog dit jaar een opleving in pc-verkopen verwachten, alhoewel het belangrijke 'back-to-school season' niet meer gehaald wordt. Desalniettemien zijn ze erg blij met deze datum, aangezien een delay naar 2002 ook nog mogelijk was geweest. Check hieronder vast wat meer info:

"We were expecting a six-month delay and we're so ecstatic about the one-month delay, we hardly heard the rest of the call," said one source familiar with Friday's briefing.

Over bij PC Stats hebben ze eens gekeken naar de Samsung 750S, een van Samsungs betere 17" modellen. Dit beeldkanon bevat een CRT buis met een 0.24 dot pitch en trekt een maximale resolutie van 1280x1024. Op de aangeraden resolutie van 1024 bij 768 krijg je 85Hz voor je snuit en een erg strak beeldje te zien:

Resolution and picture quality with this monitor is first rate. We increased resolution to the max value of 1024x768 clear and crisp. Next we turned up the brightness and contrast all the way to see what impact this had on picture quality. We've seen some monitors crap-out when the brightness and contrast are maxed out. So much so that the masking behind the glass becomes visible. Obviously the Samsung 750s didn't have these problems - or else we would have chucked it out the bloomin' window! Colour quality and pixel definition remained sharp, and although there are only a few colour temperatures the range is fully adequate. A temperature of about 6500K looked to be the optimal setting as it was not too warm, and not overly cold. [break]Concluderend stelt de reviewer dat je voor het geld een goede 17 incher in huis haalt:[/break]As 17" monitors go, the 750s ranks in at the high to middle ground. Lastly, and most importantly is that the screen sharpness holds true through a variety of settings, to provide a clear and accurate picture. So all in all the Samsung 750s is a very fine monitor in its own right. Definitely worth getting if you are in the market for a new 17" screen to play Quake III on or just use for work or surfing.

Lost Circuits zorgde ervoor dat we vandaag een review kunnen lezen over een i815E moederbord van Shuttle. De AE22 is de grote broer van de microATX ME21. Het bord is voorzien van 6 PCI, AGP en 3 DIMM slots. De plank was niet bijster snel en liet zich ook niet geweldig overklokken door gebrek aan voltage instellingen en een foutje in het BIOS waardoor de FSB niet goed werd ingesteld, maar het was wel stabiel:

Yes, I know, this is another review of yet another i815E based board, so why bother. The market has been swamped with these boards and they all have one thing in common, they are very similar. Not quite, there are some boards that are tuned solely for performance, there are others aiming at stability under overclocked conditions and there is the last category which is mostly a mainboard around the chipset.

[...] That doesn't mean that the board cannot be improved. Among the easiest things to do would be to clean out the incorrect settings in the BIOS and substitute the correct values for the wrong FSB settings. Sure enough, many people still buy their computers according to the clock speed but the backside of the coin is that in a competitive world, even nominally high clock speed cannot mask the performance weakness if the board runs actually slower than specified.

Komende herfst zal TDK nieuwe cd-branders op de markt brengen die in staat zijn om 2GB op een cd'tje weg te schrijven. Hiervoor wordt gebruik gemaakt van MultiLevel Recording, een techniek die het bedrijf heeft ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Calimetrics, Mitsubishi en Plextor. 2GB CD-R media is al in ontwikkeling en zal snel opgevolgd worden door 2,6 en 3,2GB versies . TDK hat auf der Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas angekündigt, noch im Herbst diesen Jahres Brenner und CD-Rs und -RWs mit 2 GByte Kapazität auf den Markt zu bringen. Für diesen Quantensprung setzt TDK das so genannte MultiLevel-Recording (ML) ein.

Zusammen mit Calimetrics, Mitsubishi und Plextor arbeitet TDK seit vergangenem Jahr in einer MultiLevel-Allianz an der neuen Technologie. Der Clou an der ursprünglich von Calimetrics entwickelten Technik: Statt wie bei herkömmlichen Disks nur zwischen hell und dunkel zu unterscheiden, kann das MultiLevel-Verfahren acht Graustufen lesen.

Grob gesagt lassen sich auf der Fläche, die bisher 0 oder 1 (hell oder dunkel) speichern konnte, nun Werte von 0 bis 8 (Graustufen) ablegen. Die Differenzierung bietet zum einen mehr Speicherplatz, zum anderen soll sich die Schreibgeschwindigkeit verdreifachen und so bis zu 36x entsprechen.

ML setzt laut TDK auf der herkömmlichen Brennerplattform auf. Außer einem speziellen IC seien keine weiteren Veränderungen an der Optik oder Hardware erforderlich. ML braucht aber spezielle Medien. Mitsubishi hat bereits eine solche CD-RW entwickelt. Die 2-GByte-Medien sollen schon bald von CDs mit 2,6 und dann 3,2 GByte abgelöst werden.

Op een beurs in Californië heeft Hector Ruiz, de directeur van AMD, wat meer informatie gegeven over FAB 35, die de huidige fabrieken in Austin en Dresden moet gaan helpen met het voldoen aan de vraag naar AMD processors. De fabriek krijgt 300mm wafersteppers en er zal zo'n 4 miljard dollar ingestoken moeten worden voor hij in het jaar 2004 in bedrijf kan worden genomen. Om de kosten en het risico in te dammen gaat AMD waarschijnlijk samenwerken met een aantal andere bedrijven:

Speaking at the Industry Strategy Symposium here today, Ruiz said the facility, to be called Fab 35, will likely be a joint venture in order to share the risks and costs of the fab, which could cost in the range of $4 billion.

[...] Ruiz also said that he expects demand for personal computers to "return with a vengeance" no later than the second half of this year, and that demand will be sustained "for a long time to come."

Van verschillende fabrikanten zijn er nu webpads in ontwikkeling; kleine draadloze schermen, waarmee je kunt internetten. Sony's versie heet eVilla en het bijzondere eraan is, dat het gebruik maakt van een speciale versie van BeOS. Deze versie, genaamd BeIA, is speciaal geschikt voor draagbare apparaten en zogenaamde "web appliances". Het apparaat, dat zo groot is als een A4, zal ongeveer $500,- gaan kosten:

The eVilla is also unique because of what it uses on the inside--namely, the BeIA operating system from Be. The win is big for the Menlo Park, Calif., company, which has been touting its operating system as well-suited for Net appliances, but has yet to gain a major foothold in the market.

Eén hand op de muis en de andere op het keyboard. Tijdens het surfen en bij veel games gebruiken we het toetsenbord maar met één hand. Nu is er dus een toetsenbord voor één hand:The Half Keyboard. Dit toetsenbord is bedoeld voor CAD-specialisten, fanatieke surfers en andere mensen die vaak maar één hand gebruiken voor het toetsenbord. Naar mijn mening kunnen dat ook mensen zijn die 3D-games spelen of gewoon maar één hand hebben.

Het principe is simpel: Iedere lettertoets heeft een dubbele betekenis. Door de spatiebalk ingedrukt te houden met je duim, kun je met andere vingers de secundaire letter van een toets gebruiken. Als je kort op spatie drukt, krijg je gewoon een spatie .

Voor hoofdletters moet je dus shift en de spatiebalk ingedrukt houden. Of het lekker tikt weet ik niet, maar volgens een reviewer van het tijdschrift Macworld kon hij binnen een kwartier 20 woorden per minuut halen. Van het toetsenbord is ook een versie voor palmtops beschikbaar. Een versie om je handspring om te toveren in een "wearable computer" is in ontwikkeling:

"It makes you a lot more efficient if you aren't constantly alternating between the keyboard and the mouse or pen," said Edgar Matias, the Half Keyboard's inventor and president and CEO of Matias.

The Half Keyboard looks like the left half of a standard keyboard. It has the same full-size keys and letter layout, but each key also doubles for its opposite right-hand key, which is activated when the space bar is held down.

Sinterklaas 82 tm liet ons weten dat X-Bit Labs even bij AMD heeft geïnformeerd over hoe het nou zit met de toekomstige Morgan en Palomino processors van AMD. De vraag was of deze nieuwe processors ook Socket A compatible zijn, AMD had hier het volgende op te melden:

"Assuming they [mainboards] have the correct voltage regulator (which they should on a validated system), the parts are socket compatible. They will need to flash a new BIOS."

De nieuwe Palomino processors worden ontworpen voor een 133MHz DDR FSB (266MHz bus) en dus blijft alleen de nieuwe Morgan, die op 100Mhz DDR moet gaat lopen, over om op een oudere VIA KT133 chipset te doen.

PC Monkey heeft een review geschreven waarin de twee topmodellen van ATi worden vergeleken: de Radeon 32MB en de Radeon ViVo 64MB. In benchmarks bleek het extra geheugen van de ViVo een positief effect te hebben op de prestaties van de kaart, maar het ViVo (Video-in, Video-out) gedeelte van de kaart bleek niet geweldig te zijn:

What do these graphs tell us? First off, that the Radeon as is widely known is a great 32-bit color performer. In fact, this card is essentially made for 32-bit color. Secondly, we see that the 32meg and 64meg Radeons are both very close in the performance category only differing by a few frames in most cases.

[...] TV-out "works" but I use that term in the loosest sense. It puts a picture on my TV. That picture suffers from numerous faults though, it is fuzzy and washed out and especially in dark scenes of movies or areas of games there is an awful horizontal line effect.

Beide Radeons zijn goede kaarten, maar de conclusie van deze review is dat het voor de meeste mensen niet nuttig is om extra geld voor de 64MB ViVo versie uit te geven.

Gisteren hebben we gelukkig weer wat meer dan 2M blokjes geflusht. De 2,5M werd net niet gehaald, hopelijk lukt dat morgen weer.

Maximum3D besnuffelde het AOpen MK33 bordje voor Socket-A processoren. Het begin-statement waarschuwt alle tweakers al: Lets face it, not everyone needs a motherboard like the Abit KT7-RAID .... d'r is dus niets (of althans weinig) te halen voor de echte Tweaker! Maar toch, dit bord is redelijk uniek onder de Socket-A bordjes, simpelweg vanwege het Micro-ATX formaat. Dat levert natuurlijk meteen een bijkomend probleem op: Micro-ATX kastjes hebben veelal een te slappe (vaak 145W) voeding, terwijl de gemiddelde Socket-A processor & toebehoren beduidend hongeriger is natuurlijk :

The bottom line The MK33 revealed a weakness in our rating system. Overall, for board does exactly what is was designed to do. It is stable, has good performance, and meets the needs of the average user, hence the score of 4 out of 5 stars. On the other hand, from an overclockers perspective, the board has none of the features needed to get the most out of the Durons and Thunderbirds. If you are building a simple, solid second box for the house, of assembling a small LAN box, the MK33 is hard to beat, but for a hobbyist looking to overclock and tweak, this is not the board for you. I try to rate things based on their intended audience, and with that in mind, the MK33 exceeded my expectations. With an actual AGP slot, and three PCI slots for future, the MK33 offers a solid upgrade path, on a stable, inexpensive platform.

Dus: niet echt een bordje voor de Tweaker, maar wel lekker stabiel, en natuurlijk klein (mits je de passende kast/voeding kunt realiseren natuurlijk). Maar - om het er nog maar eens uit te lichten - wel een bordje voor hen die een stabiel een klein systeempje zoeken dus! En denk er om: veel Micro-ATX concurrentie is er niet op het Socket-A front!
