CNN maakt bekend dat VeriSign, fabrikant van e-commerce security software, voor 21 miljard dollar eigenaar wordt van domeinenboer Network Solutions:

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - VeriSign Inc. agreed to acquire Network Solutions Inc. for $21 billion in stock Tuesday, creating an online powerhouse that could shepherd companies onto the Internet and then help establish and maintain their e-commerce identity.

The surprise deal unites the world's leading provider of Internet domain name registrations, Network Solutions, with the leading provider of e-commerce and e-mail security, creating a company that will begin with more than 12 million worldwide subscribers.

"It's a surprise deal but a phenomenal deal," said Paul Merenbloom, an analyst with Prudential Securities Inc. "This is ying and yang coming together for e-business solutions.

IBM, sinds kort fabrikant van G4 processors voor Apple, blijkt inmiddels dermate hoge yields te halen dat het snellere G4 processors produceert dan Motorola. Terwijl Motorola nog steeds rond de 500MHz hangt is IBM inmiddels in staat om redelijke hoeveelheden op 650MHz te vervaardigen. Motorola ziet geen humor in deze situatie en wil dat de G4 supplies van PowerPC partner IBM beperkt worden:

Motorola is acting like a spoiled brat by using contractual obligations to prevent IBM selling fast PowerPC 7400 (aka G4) to Apple just because it can't produce enough of them itself.

[...] IBM staffers claim to have identified problems with the G4 production process, but have figured out ways around them, and the company is now able to churn out not only 500MHZ G4s, but 600 and 650MHz parts in decent volumes too. And since IBM's yields are higher than Motorola's, it can charge less per chip than its rival.

Fine, but according to the sources, Motorola is severely pissed off about IBM's success and its own failure here, and is allegedly using certain clauses in its AltiVec licensing deal with IBM to limit Big Blue's ability to sell to Apple.

The Register schrijft dat distributeurs en leveranciers van Xeon Coppermines bepaald niet gelukkig zijn met de problemen rond Intel's i840 chipset. Onlangs maakte Intel bekend dat drie i820 en i840 server planken geschrapt werden vanwege problemen met de Memory Translater Hub in combinatie met ECC SDRAM. Als gevolg hiervan kampen distributeurs nu met voorraden onverkoopbare Xeons zonder moederbord support. Er zijn werkende i840 borden van third-party fabrikanten zoals Asus en SuperMicro, maar veel klanten menen dat zij alleen met een gerust hart business kunnen draaien wanneer zij een Intel plank in hun servertje hebben liggen...

Problems with the i840 chip set have led to decline in revenues for distributors and dealers having stock of chips with no motherboard support, it has emerged.

A US dealer, who bought 40 Xeon processors on the 10th of January, told us today that his distributor has now received instructions from Intel to honour any dealer request who wishes to return processors because of the lack of mobo problem.

The dealer, who did not wish to be named, said: "The truth is, Intel has sold and delivered a product that is totally worthless since there is not one commercially available motherboard that will run any of the so-called Xeon 600MHz processors with 133MHz front side bus."

[...] There is third party motherboard support for the 840 chipset, but distributors have done good business selling boxed Intel chips and motherboards, while many dealers will only buy Intel because their customers demand it.

The increase on TNT2 cards is not as dramatic as with GeForce, but itŽs also there at all!

Update: To use the special S3 Quake3 Arena maps with S3TC you need a special EXE file bsides of the maps: DMMQ3.EXE. The levels work without any additional settings with the 5.08 drivers if you start the game with this EXE instead of the normal file. You can download the EXE and levels here: S3 Q3A Levels.

The Ghost schrijft: "De migratie van Multiweb naar Sonera is totaal mislukt. Dit wordt bevestigd door de helpdesk medewerkers":

Op 6 Maart 2000 om 01:00 uur Nederlandse tijd is Sonera gestart met het migreren (lees inlijven) van het oude Multiweb platform. De MGG (Multiweb Gebruikers Groep) had al sterke vermoedens dat dit vreselijk mis zou lopen. Sonera was heel zeker van zich zelf en heeft in de radio uitzending van Tros Online op zondag 5 Maart j.l. gezegd dat er niks mis kon gaan.

Nu een dag na de start van de migratie is het eerste serieuse probleem al naar boven gekomen. 90% van de oude multiweb email adressen is verdwenen en er kan nog niet gezegd worden of dit te herstellen is.

Dat hier fouten gemaakt zouden worden was voor de gebruikers en de MGG al op voorhand duidelijk. Alle gebruikers hebben een brief gehad met daar in de gegevens die zouden veranderen. Bij de meeste mesen stonden de oude gegevens nergens vermeld en waren de email adressen al reeds uit de database verdwenen.

Nu de migratie een feit is, is er geen weg meer terug, aldus een helpdesk medewerker.

WebWereld meldt in dit bericht dat Altavista haar 0800-internetdienst mogelijk ook in Nederland zal starten. In Engeland kun je al voor 35 gulden per jaar met deze provider het internet op (zie ook deze posting van vanochtend):

Als AltaVista ook in Nederland internettoegang gaat aanbieden, wordt het een hoogwaardige ISP, zegt Sluman. "AltaVista heeft een naam hoog te houden. Het moet goede kwaliteit zijn."

The Register meldt dat Intel aan al haar werknemers (en dat zijn er 70.000) een nieuwe PC mét internetaansluiting en software gaat geven. Volgens het artikel zal er mogelijk een 1GHz P3 inzitten. Het is alleen nog niet bekend welke computerboer de PC's daadwerkelijk gaat leveren. De eerste gelukkigen krijgen hun nieuwe poeter in juni .

Chip giant Intel said today it is to give "state of the art" PCs, Internet access and services to its 70,000 employees for nothing.

The scheme, called the Home PC programme, will utilise the latest (1GHz?) technology from Intel, but this morning the company declined to say who was the supplier.

The machines will start to be delivered to employees' homes in June, with rollout completed around the time of the Willamette launch.

As the reason, Intel says it wants to give its employees and their families access to both corporate data and unlimited Internet access.

We will be very interested to see who the lucky vendor is, but suspect we will only find out if someone nice from Intel invites us to their homes for a cup of tea between now and October...

DiGiSTORM schrijft dat Ace's Hardware een artikel heeft gepost met daarin wat videokaarten info geplukt van de CeBIT beurs. Er wordt o.a. gezegd dat Matrox fans in juli / augustus de G800 kunnen verwachten:

At the Matrox booth, I met with Marije Stijnen. Although she told me quite a few things,but I can't tell you much about Matrox next generation because I had to sign a NDA before leaving the booth. All I can say is that the G450 will be an excellent videocard, but not the favorite of hardcore gamers.

Interesting was Matrox's view on T&L: "DirectX 7 only support T&L acceleration for static objects, not in moving objects". Therefore Matrox feels that there is no real need to launch a T&L accelerated videocard before DirectX 8.0 comes out (July- August 2000). Acceptable, but Dagoth More Zoological proves that by T&L acceleration is interesting even if DirectX 7.0 does not fully support it. After all, if the videocard takes care of the geometry for static objects, the moving objects can use more polygons because the CPU has been relieved of at least some of the geometry calculations.

Matrox will not leave the High end gamers market: the "G800" (Name not confirmed by Matrox) is scheduled for a release at the same time when DirectX8 is lanched.

BravOman stuurde me richting Smart Computing waar een roundup is geplaatst van acht 21" monitoren, waaronder de Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u, NEC MultiSync FP1350 en de Nokia 445Pro. Hier een gedeelte over de ViewSonic P817 XtremeMonitor die ditmaal als beste uit de test kwam:

Text and graphics alike look smashing because of the monitor’s top-notch brightness and contrast. Letters look bold and black on a pure white background while graphics maintain vivid shades and defined images. The Adobe PhotoShop pictures we viewed had consistent, smooth hues with well-aligned color registration. The monitor has poor regulation; we witnessed this when brighter images caused expansion. As is common among shadow mask displays, we found that the left and right borders were not quite parallel.

As mentioned above, the ViewSonic’s best feature is its high resolution capabilities. The P817 reaches a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 at 85Hz; this is double the resolution at which we normally test the displays. While this seems really impressive, you won’t be able to take advantage of this rate unless your video card has the horsepower to handle it.

There’s a reason this display is so expensive. Its quality outshines all the other displays in this roundup with the exception of the NEC. If you’ve got the video card to accompany this monitor, it’s a hard unit to beat in terms of defined text and colorful graphics.

As for S3 Savage4 based graphics card, we could recommend this card only if you can't live without Unreal/Unreal Tournament, where it will definitely prove better than anything else. And if you are fond of other games, you'd better forget about these graphics cards at all. S3 seems to be unable to improve its software for S3 Savage4 chipset.

Ik werk al 22 jaar als secretaresse. Ondanks het vele typen, heb ik nooit klachten gehad, totdat wij 4 jaar geleden van WP 5.2 op Word overstapten en dus niet ontkwamen aan het verschijnsel muis. Ofschoon ik toen al in deeltijd werkte (16 uur per week) had ik binnen een jaar tijd klachten aan mijn rechterarm, die nu zo erg zijn dat ik de boel alleen met fysioterapie en accupunctuur enigzins aan de gang kan houden. Het is waanzinnig dat een tekstverwerkingsprogramma alleen nog maar efficiënt te bedienen is met een muis. De volstrekt onnatuurlijke, overstrekte, houding waarin je je arm moet houden en het dubbelklikken is m.i. vragen om problemen. Ik begrijp dan ook niet dat de Arbo-dienst geen verbod op de muis heeft ingesteld. In de lijn van rokers die nu de tabaksindustrie aanklagen lijkt het mij heel redelijk om een schadeclaim bij Bill Gates c.s. in te dienen.

Ars Technica deed een vergelijking van zeven slot-1 moederplanken; de Microstar MS-6301 (i820+SDRAM), Asus P3C-2000 (i820+SDRAM), Intel CC820 (i820+SDRAM), SuperMicro PIIISCD (i820+SDRAM), ABIT BE6 (440BX), IWill VD133 (Apollo Pro 133A) en Tyan Trinity 400 (Apollo Pro 133A). Door de brakke SDRAM implementatie van de i820 chipset waren de i820 planken geen partij in de test, deze werd namelijk opvallend gewonnen door een bord met de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset:

Let me first say that that Tyan board is astounding. I am more impressed with that board every time I use it. Its overclocking prowess is somewhat less than others, but as you can see by my results overclocking only goes so far. What difference does it make if you're running your CPU at 750MHz, if you get beaten out by a someone with a 667MHz CPU that's on a better-performing motherboard?

So in the end, I'd have to say that right now the best bang for the buck is undoubtedly the Tyan Trinity 400. This board is, as you'll recall, is based on VIA's Apollo Pro 133A chipset. The i820 boards are a more expensive option, and they aren't necessarily a bad choice, but they don't really shine like the Tyan board does. Anyway, after getting a replacement mobo and video card from The Chip Merchant, I was able to resume my testing.

Dokter Tom heeft een artikeltje gepost over problemen met de Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Deze blijkt met de nieuwe v4.20 AGP drivers duidelijk slechter te presteren als met de oude v4.17 drivers. De zogenaamde ATA66 support blijkt alleen op papier te bestaan: in benchmarks blijven transfers vanuit de harddisk cache rond de 30MB/s te steken terwijl de i820 en Promise ATA66 controller beide exact 49,5MB/s trekken:

Unfortunately our tests revealed that this support exists only on paper. Measuring the maximum throughput from the hard disk cache to the system produced results that were only in the area of ATA33 or UDMA33, which offers a bandwidth of only up to 33 MB/s. There's currently no real world benchmark that would make any difference, mainly because even the fastest disks can only supply up to 30 MB/s from the physical media, but this might change very soon. Therefore I expect VIA to sort out this issue as soon as possible. We do not know if the problem is due to a driver issue, or if the actual chipset is unable to transport data fast enough, but we do know that motherboards do report 'Multi word DMA Mode 4' with the proper hard drives, alas without offering the expected throughput.

Intel's i810, i810E, 820 and i840 chipsets claim UDMA66-support as well and they are actually able to reach the expected throughput. Alternatively we tested with the Promise Ultra66 PCI card, which is usually used for systems that don't offer ATA66-support. This card produced the same results as the motherboards with Intel 8XX chipsets.

Verder keek Tom ook nog naar de invloed van Cas 2 en Cas 3 PC133 SDRAM op de memory en AGP performance.

AltaVista zal aan de overkant van de sloot binnenkort met gratis internet toegang beginnen. Voor 9,99 pond per jaar en 36 pond aansluitingskosten kunnen gebruikers inbellen op een gratis 0800 nummer. Altavista denkt het verhaal financieel rond te draaien met de inkomsten van advertenties en e-commerce. Realtek, onze <kuch>favoriete</kuch> fabrikant van ethernet chips, heeft tegelijkertijd met ALi aangekondigd dat het met een low-cost IEEE 1394 (aka Firewire) chip op de markt komt. De chips ondersteunen snelheden van 100, 200 en 400Mbit/s:

Though the two Taiwan companies are somewhat late to the 1394 chip market, they hope to gain ground on their foreign rivals by competing on price. Analysts, however, believe that Taiwan's 1394 chip players have a fighting chance. “Taiwan is known for turning emerging markets upside down by competing on price,” said Thales Lee, an analyst at Vision Communications Inc. in Taipei.

Hsinchu-based Acer Laboratories, which is best known for its PC chipsets, has unveiled an IEEE 1394 Open Host Controller Interface Link Layer chip that it is touting as the lowest-power OHCI device on the market. Dubbed the M5251, the chip features a 2.5-V core and is targeted at desktop and mobile PCs. The M5251 supports 100-, 200-, and 400-Mbit/s 1394 transfer rates and 66-MHz PCI clocks, according to Acer Labs.

EETimes meldt dat Intel software ontwikkelt waarmee notebooks tegen oneigenlijk gebruik beschermd kunnen worden. Deze 'Proctected Access Architecture' treedt in werking voordat Windows (of elk ander OS?) geboot wordt:

The Intel Protected Access Architecture involves systems software that will demand user authentication before the Windows operating system will boot up on a notebook computer, said Frank Spindler, director of marketing for Intel's mobile computing group. A wide variety of third-party security device makers will support the software, Spindler said, including Veridicom Inc. (Santa Clara, Calif.), which makes a fingerprint recognition module. Spindler struggled with a demo of the software using Veridicom's fingerprint-recognition device, but managed to get the program to work after repeated attempts.

Notebook makers are beginning to add security devices like fingerprint-recognition subsystems to their units, which is creating a systems integration issue that Intel's software is meant to address. BIOS vendor Phoenix Technologies Ltd. and security device maker Rainbow Technologies will also support the software.

De European Space Agency heeft in navolging van OpenCores een 32-bit processor design onder een open-source licentie 'gelanceerd' (spreekwoordelijk - niet in space ). Deze zogenaamde LEON-1 core vormt een mogelijke concurrent voor commerciële designs van MIPS, ARM en Sun:

Some observers suggest that the free availability of Leon-1 and of another 32-bit architecture, OpenRISC 1000, could undermine commercial core licensors like ARM Ltd., MIPS Technologies and Sun Microsystems. Indeed, Leon's designer, Jiri Gaisler, said he's already been approached by "a very big mobile phone company" looking to cut processor costs. He would not name the company.

[...] The Leon-1 core is described as a Sparc-compatible integer unit implemented as a configurable, synthesizable VHDL model. At 27k gates Leon-1 is expected to run at 100 MHz in an Alcatel Microelectronics 0.35-micron CMOS process technology. A post-layout simulation of the core in a Xilinx XCV300E-8 FPGA shows it occupying 5,300 lookup tables with additional block RAM and running at 45 MHz.

De Athlon 1000 lijkt voorlopig vooral interessant te zijn voor personen die teveel geld te spenderen hebben, want het lieve procje kost een dikke 1299 dollar (per 1000 that is). Wie voor april een 1GHz Athlon wil bemachtigen zal er overigens een Compaq of Gateway omheen moeten kopen, want tot die tijd worden de CPU's niet aan normale distributeurs geleverd:

The speediest Athlons do not come cheap. The current 1-GHz model comes in a cartridge with off-chip cache and is listed at $1,299 each in1,000-unit shipments. The 900-MHz model lists for $899 and the 950-MHz version is $999 in the same volumes. "Gateway and Compaq say that if you order a machine with a 1-GHz processor today, you can get it by next week, so I sure hope AMD can deliver the parts," said Brookwood.

Zoals je eerder hebt kunnen lezen maakt AMD bij de Athlon 1000 gebruik van beproefde overclocking trucjes. Vcore werd verhoogd en de L2 cache divider werd (bij de Athlon 900 en hoger) verlaagd. De Athlon 900 is daarom minder interessant want deze scaled door de tragere L2 cache erg slecht ten opzichte van de Athlon 850.
