3D Spotlight heeft een review gepost van de Thermal Take Golden Orb heatsink. Ondanks de exotische vormgeving, in de stijl van de HP Polor Logic, kost dit coolertje maar 20 dollar. Op de performance valt ook niet te zeiken; het ding koelt goed en krijgt van 3D Spotlight een rating van 9,1/10:

The Thermaltake Aircooler, aka The Golden Orb, performed as expected. It did do a better job at heat dissipation than the Intel retail unit. The efficient design of the cooler allowed me to access all of my DIMM slots. Also, I did not notice any loud noise coming from the fan. With some coolers I have used in the past, you would think the computer was warming up to take off with all the sound it made. This is not the case of the Golden Orb. It does emit some sound, but not very much to bother you.

De jongens en meisjes van Tweak3D hebben een review van de 72-speed Kenwood TrueX CD-ROM drive online geparkeerd. Vergeleken met een 24-speed Toshibe drive bleek de bijna drie keer zo hoog te presteren. De performance van de drive scaled dus prima dankzij de TrueX technologie:

In conclusion, Kenwood's 72X CD-ROM drive does match its advertised 72X speed rating, although only when reading the outside of a disc, and it does have a much higher CPU utilization and a somewhat longer access time. But overall, the drive reads quickly and efficiently, with no problems reading a variety of CD media. The TrueX technology also makes the drive quieter because of the slower rotation speed.

AthlonOC.com heeft een review van de 3DfxCool SlotHO neer gemikt. Meneer de reviewer was dankzij deze slot cooler in staat om zijn Athlon 500@750 naar 780MHz over te klokken:

I think that was a fair test don't you? For $8 I was able to squeeze an extra 45Mhz almost an entire speed grade. I like how I can slide the cooler into my top slot above my video card, and it will suck hot air away from the back side of my processor and kick it out the back side of the case. This could be the reason I was able to overclock the CPU higher than without it, but the entire case temp dropped because of the heat from the processor going straight out the case.

Nu.nl meldt dat een bende CD piraten, die in 1996 en 1997 bijna 350.000 illegale CD'tjes aan de man bracht, de helft van zijn criminele winst van twee miljoen gulden aan de staat door moet passen:

De zes bendeleden zijn begin vorig jaar veroordeeld tot celstraffen tot een half jaar. In een aparte pluk-ze-procedure eiste justitie dat de bendeleden ook hun criminele winsten inleveren. Volgens het OM gaat het in totaal om 3,6 miljoen gulden: twee miljoen van de hoofdverdachten M.O. en R. de M. uit Amsterdam en 1,6 miljoen van de vier andere bendeleden.

Volgens de raadslieden van de bendeleden is de door officier van justitie mr. M. Verwiel becijferde winst veel te hoog. Er zijn minder cd's verkocht dan het OM heeft berekend en bovendien zijn de investeringen en onkosten hoger, stelden de advocaten.

Het experimentele programma www-tv.nl dat zondag door de KRO werd uitgezonden, werd verstoord door zogenaamde 'hackers'. Tijdens het programma konden duizenden internetters meekletsen over de EURO 2000. Uit dit bericht van Nu.nl krijg ik de indruk dat deze 'internet terroristen' probeerden om de macht over te nemen van het IRC kanaal waarop de discussie werd gevoerd:

KRO-mediadirecteur Ton Verlind vond het experimentele programma veelbelovend. Het is volgens hem journalistiek interressant. Politici moeten bijvoorbeeld voortaan beter op hun woorden passen, omdat hun uitspraken voor iedereen te controleren zijn. Uit de uitzending blijkt wel dat het systeem nog zeer kwetsbaar is, gezien de inbreuk van de hackers. "Het is jammer dat mensen hun kennis aanwenden voor iets negatiefs. Het is een vorm van internetterrorisme", aldus Verlind.

Intel chipsets

Bij WebWereld lees ik dat het bedrijf Destiny Media Technologies werkt aan een beveiligde MP3 variant, genaamd MPE. Het verschil met een normale MP3 is dat er 350kB aan gegevens wordt toegevoegd bestaande uit een ingebouwde speler, encryptie en techniek voor transacties via de creditcard. Pas nadat de gebruiker elektronisch heeft betaald voor het bestand zal het hele nummer te beluisteren zijn.

MPE maakt grotendeels gebruik van de bestaande compressietechniek. Per song wordt er echter 350 Kbytes aan data toegevoegd, bestaande uit een ingebouwde speler, encryptie en techniek voor transacties via de creditcard. Normale MP3'tjes kunnen zonder enige restrictie eindeloos worden doorverstuurd. De rechthebbenden zien hier echter geen cent van terug. Met MPE moet dat wel gebeuren, de liedjes zijn beveiligd.

De consument moet zonder tegenprestatie een MPE-liedje kunnen downloaden. Met de ingebouwde speler kan 30 seconden van de song worden afgespeeld. Bevalt het liedje, dan kan via dezelfde speler worden overgegaan tot aankoop. Hiervoor moet vanzelfsprekend de creditcard worden getrokken. Destiny hoopt ongeveer 15 procent van het aankoopbedrag te kunnen opstrijken.

Een MPE-bestandje kan per e-mail aan vrienden en bekenden worden verstuurd, die op hun beurt 30 seconden kunnen beluisteren. De bedoeling is dat ook zij dan tot aankoop overgaan. 'Viral marketing' noemt Destiny dit: de liedjes verspreiden als een virus over het net.

De AMD aandelenkoers heeft vandaag een leuke jump gemaakt nadat de 1GHz Athlon officieel werd aangekondigd. Het aandeel steeg 5,94 dollar naar $47,94:

Advanced Micro's stock gained 5-15/16 to 47-15/16 in heavy trading on the New York Stock Exchange. More than 3.4 million shares had traded hands following an opening delay caused by an order imbalance.

The company said it had begun shipments of its 1 gigahertz (GHz) computer chip, beating its far larger competitor Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news).

Analysts have said that the chips will not be available in big volumes after they are launched, and that only a handful of personal computer makers are likely to announce products designed for one gigahertz processors.

Advanced Micro said it would immediately begin shipping its chips to its two lead partners, Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) and Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news)

The Register meldt dat het marktaandeel van AMD in de VS achter blijft bij het aandeel op de Europese markt. AMD zou hier inmiddels 32% van het value segment in handen hebben en 8% van het high performance segment:

Lapinski said that estimates from Mercury Research, a US marketing company, was that AMD held between two to five per cent of the high performance desktop marketplace in the first three months of this year. "We see no problem meeting demands for our customer requirements," he added. That will be fulfilled by both Fabs 25 and 30, he said.

These figures vary greatly from Europe, where, we understand, the market share is just over eight per cent in the high performance (Athlon) segment. And AMD estimates it holds around 32 per cent of the value segment -- essentially K6-2s.

Verder maakte AMD duidelijk dat alle 1GHz Athlon supplies deze maand richting Gateway en Compaq gaan. De rest van de planeet komt in april aan de beurt.

Het is Sony niet gelukt om afgelopen weekend 1 miljoen Playstation II consoles te verkopen, zoals eerder werd aangekodigd. Het aantal bleef helaas steken op 980.000, slechts 20.000 stuks te weinig dus. Vanwege problemen met de levering van memory cards zijn overigens pas 720.000 units daadwerkelijk afgeleverd. De overige 260.000 volgen binnen twee weken.

Sony said it sold 980,000 PlayStation 2 video-game consoles in the three days since the product debuted in Japanese stores to long lines, falling short of its expectations by 20,000 units.

The electronics giant, maker of the best-selling PlayStation game machine, said it sold 380,000 consoles through its online site, PlayStation.com, and another 600,000 at retail outlets throughout Japan. To date, 720,000 units had been shipped, with another 260,000 to be shipped in the next two weeks.

Sony had planned to ship 1 million units of the 128-bit gaming console in the first weekend of sales, but said it now expects to reach that goal by March 15, with shipments reaching 1.4 million by the end of the month. The company, which hopes to develop the machine into an Internet terminal, said some shipments had been delayed by as much as 10 days because of a shortage of memory cards, which are sold with the consoles.

Bij Cole3D is een artikel gepost waarin een software matige DVD setup wordt vergeleken met met een setup waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van een hardware decoder. Naast een onderzoek naar het CPU gebruik van processors van 233MHz tot 550MHz werd ook gekeken naar een verschil in beeldkwaliteit. Hieronder vast een gedeelte, lees hier de rest.

With several options in the market today for experiencing DVDs today you're naturally going to hear arguments for each side. There is no one right answer, as we are all in different situations in terms of our setup and budget. The ideal set up for PC-DVDs would be a good solid CPU (say 400mhz+ or so), a video card supporting hardware motion compensation such as the Viper II, Rage 128, or G400, a nice 19 inch or larger monitor or TV, a sound card supporting Digital speakers along with a good set of speakers. Otherwise, pair those speakers up with a good hardware decoder and monitor you'll have just as satisfying of an experience.

Pricewise, a good CPU, video card, and sound card will set you back further than a regular $60 hardware decoder which basically combines all those into one card allowing you to skimp on the other products while still offering great image quality, sound, and no dropped frames. However, obviously you get more with a good overall set up as you didn't buy them JUST for DVDs.

So it's really a matter of what you use your computer for. If you're an average user at home who only requires a 200mhz processor to browse the web and type up documents, you definitely don't want to upgrade ALL your components JUST for DVDs, while you can just get a decoder and DVD-ROM Drive and leave all your components in tact.

However, if you're a high end gamer/business user and already have all the components it takes to power up DVDs and make a real experience out of it, all you'll really need is a DVD-ROM Drive to add to your current setup.

Vipertje tipte ons richting Thresh's FiringSquad waar een review geplaatst is van de Asus P3C-E i820 plank met RDRAM support. Als maximale bussnelheid noteerde de P3C-E 146MHz, oftewel een Pentium III 500E @ 733MHz.

The P3C-E is a fine motherboard and was a joy to work with. The motherboard never crashed or hung during a single test, even when left running overnight the system responded beautifully the next day. The only compatability issue related with the 820 chipset is with ECC SDRAM; a feature the chipset wasn't even originally intended to support.

Likewise, we didn't have to worry about making sure we had the right 820 stepping or if certain features were disabled by default, we simply booted up the system, installed the 820 INF files, and we were up and running.

That doesn't mean this is the perfect product, as the current cost for a loaded 820 system with RDRAM is way too expensive. For most consumers interested in a chipset for their Intel CPU, we recommend the Apollo Pro133A chipset or sticking with your BX setup until the upcoming 815 chipset debuts later this year.

hjs schrijft dat T-Break een review heeft klaarliggen van de Abit Siluro GeForce. Het kaartje is gebaseerd op nVidia's reference design en bevat 32MB SDRAM, de Sil 154 chip voor ondersteuning van LCD monitoren en een TV-Out. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

To tell you the truth, I was slightly disappointed with Siluro. Coming from ABIT I wanted this card to leave all the other cards out in the dust, especially with overclocking. That didn’t happened. There is nothing fancy about Siluro's drivers either. They have the exact same options as any other GeForce drivers. I was also surprised at the software bundle. Their website mentions Wargasm and TAW as the included games but instead I found Shogo and Test Drive 5- maybe because of a different region? But WinDVD 2000 was definitely awesome. And so was ABIT's overclocking utility ABIT Max, which surprisingly worked with other GeForce cards as well.

The Siluro is not a bad card by any standard...it's just not something I would expect out of an ABIT product.

Anand Lal Shimpi heeft een review gepost van de 900, 950 en 1000MHz Athlon, die vandaag ook officieel gereleased zijn. Om de Athlon's op deze snelheden aan de praat te krijgen heeft AMD weer aan de L2 cache divider gesleuteld, die ditmaal op 1/3 gezet is, (333MHz voor de 1GHz Athlon dus). Daarnaast is de voltage wat opgekrikt naar 1.80v. Omdat er voor deze processors nog steeds gebruik is gemaakt van de K75 core scalen ze vij normaal t.o.v. van de langzamere Athlon's. Het wachten blijft dus op de Thunderbird die de Athlon zal voorzien van full speed on-die L2 cache.

At 1GHz the Athlon is quite impressive as it is, but it's still not as fast as we'd like it to be. For users other than those in the professional arena where every last bit of performance counts and influences how well you can do your job, most of us can wait until the Thunderbird is released in the next 2 - 3 months and truly redefines performance for the Athlon. Until then, for overclockers especially, it makes the most sense to go out and purchase a lower clocked Athlon at a cheaper price, invest in an overclocking card and try to get as close to 1GHz as possible.

For those that want the hottest Athlon on the block, 1GHz systems will be available shortly with CPUs due out next quarter not to mention the 900/950MHz parts that should be available this month. For the patient or budget restricted, the Thunderbird will be every bit worth the wait if you can manage to control yourself while these three new CPUs go on sale.

As for Intel, AMD just served, the ball is in Intel's court now. Later this week they will respond with a 1GHz announcement of their own without deviating from their current plan to mass produce 1GHz Pentium III's in Q3-2000. Until then, the monitors at AMD are displaying a 'Waiting for reply...' [break]Voor een second opinion kun je trouwens ook even langs gaan bij Sharky Extreme waar ook een 1GHz Athlon werd getest. Voor beide reviews werd overigens gebruik gemaakt van een Asus K7V KX133 moederbord, waar Anand deze week nog een review van zal plaatsen:[/break] We unfortunately weren’t allowed to talk about the board until now, but now that we can, it’s time to say that this motherboard is a very solid KX133 board. While it’s a microATX board, a full ATX version is due out soon, the K7V, and it should perform just as well. The K7V-RM is so solid that AMD even chose to outfit their evaluation systems with the motherboard which is a position previously held by the AMD 750 based Gigabyte GA-7IX. Expect a review of the K7V-RM this week.
