Mandrake 7.0 port voor Sun UltraSPARC

Mandrake Software heeft 64-bit port van haar Linux distributie uitgebracht voor de Sun UltraSPARC. Mandrake begint zich duidelijk steeds meer te profileren als een distributie met toekomst. Alleen snap ik nog niet echt wat een super user friendly OS moet op een Corporate server?

MandrakeSoft, the publisher of the user-friendly Linux-Mandrake operating system, today announced that its award winning operating system, Linux-Mandrake 7.0, is now available on the UltraSPARC platform. This port will significantly expand the reach of Linux-Mandrake within the enterprise.

MandrakeSoft will be showcasing the beta version of its Linux-Mandrake 7.0 operating system for UltraSPARC at the LinuxWorld Expo, Paris.

"With Linux-Mandrake on the Sun UltraSPARC(TM) platform, both our customer-base will benefit from our stable and user-friendly operating system running on the reliable and powerful 64 bit UltraSPARC processor," said Jacques Le Marois, President of MandrakeSoft. Ehm, ik vind PORTEN wel een beetje overdreven, d'r was toch al een kernel voor beide platformen. Dus PORTEN nou nou.

Sterker nog, Mandrake is gewoon een repackaged versie van Red Hat, en Red Hat heeft al tijden een Alpha en Sparc versie. Ze hebben dus gewoon die Alpha/Sparc versie van Red Hat even uitgebreid met hun extra packages, en klaar is kees. Mandrake is overigens helemaal niet verkeerd, als je Red Hat-achtige distro's fijn vindt. Ik gebruik zelf liever Debian of Slackware .

Linux Mandra met Sun ??
Kun je dan uberhaupt nog wel spelletjes zoal UT spelen? Wat moet dit gaan kosten dan? Ik denk niet dat dit iets is waar wij wat aan hebben op zich, als die al in nederland te koop zal zijn....

Cyberjunk86: normaliter kun je van Mandrake gewoon iso's downloaden, dat kost je dus alleen bandbreedte.
Ik verwacht dat het voor de Alpha/Sparc versies ook zo zal zijn. Wil je echter support, manual(s) en een zwikkie CD's, dan kun je het gewoon kopen. In NL zijn die PowerPacks voor ongeveer 100 piek te koop.
