De andere 2.1 speakerset review van vandaag komt van Tech Extreme. Zij hebben de Klipsch Promedia 2.1 getest. Klipsch staat bekend om z'n kwaliteitsspeakers, die soms ook nog beschikken over een THX certificaat.
De satellietspeakers van de Promedia 2.1 hebben ieder een vermogen van 35 Watt; de subwoofer heeft 130 Watt tot z'n beschikking. Voor de prijs van 180 dollar zul je volgens de reviewer geen beter 2.1 systeem kunnen krijgen. De Promedia 2.1 klinkt bij zowel muziek, games als films (DVD) uitstekend:

Het toepasselijke Void your Warranty heeft een review online gezet van de Pulse 424 speakerset van Labtec. Deze 2.1 set heeft twee satellietspeakers van ieder 12 Watt RMS en één subwoofer van 20 Watt RMS. De geluidskwaliteit van de Pulse 424 is volgens VyW goed te noemen, hoewel de subwoofer minder presteert dan de satellietjes. De Pulse 424 haalt het zeker niet bij een merk als Klipsch, maar is wel een goed alternatief voor speakers van Creative of Altec.

I really thought that I was NOT going to be impressed by these speakers, but overall I actually was. I thought it was going to be painful going from my Klipsch Promedia's to these for the time needed to review them, but it wasn't bad at all. Don't get me wrong; sound quality isn't even close to that of the Promedia's, but considering the price you really can't go wrong. A pair of the Pulse 424's would be great for a gaming machine, and even better with 2 sets. If you already have a main machine with higher end speakers, these would make great speakers for the second system in the house. From now on when I build systems for my friends, I will more than likely use these speakers.

Bij cdrlabs heeft men een externe CD-R/RW drive van Imation getest. Deze drive schijft en herschijft op 4X, en leest CD-ROM's op 6X. De aansluiting op de PC werkt via USB, waardoor de prestaties niet indrukwekkend zijn. Toch is de reviewer tevreden over deze drive. Duidelijk is dat Imation alles uit de USB-standaard heeft geperst. Kleine minpuntjes zijn de DAE-snelheid en het gebrek aan een beveiliging tegen buffer-underruns.

Imation's new 4x4x6 CD Burn-R is a good choice for those looking for an external USB drive. The drive was very easy to install thanks to Imation's instructions and the USB interface. When it comes down to how the drive performed, it did what Imation said it would do and had no problems reading our test data CD's. This drive really pushed the USB bus to its limits and along the way was able to keep the seek times and CPU usage around where they should be for a USB drive. As a writer it did as well as a 4x drive can be expected to do, writing our test data without a hiccup.

[...] When it comes down to it, I like the Imation 4x4x6 CD Burn-R. For their first try at a USB drive, they've done quite well by taking a good USB drive, including a well-rounded kit and pricing it competitively. As it is, the drive's price comes right under comparable drives from HP and Iomega. Those of you who are looking to multitask or are worried about coasters might want to look at some of the new drives with Seamless Link or BURN-Proof, but the rest of you looking for a solid and affordable USB drive should definitely keep Imation's 4x4x6 CD Burn-R as an option.

Afgelopen woensdag was al een sneakpreview te zien van de Abit TH7II-RAID, vandaag komt FiringSquad met een heuse review van Abit's nieuwste Pentium 4 mainboard. Het bord werd uitgebreid gefotografeerd en gebenched naast andere i850 mobo's. Was Abit aan de late kant met de TH7 (Socket423), nu zijn ze er als de kippen bij met een Socket478 mPGA uitvoering. Abit heeft dus voorrang verleend aan de op performance gerichte i850 chipset die met RDRAM werkt, ten opzichte van een i845 mobo dat SDRAM en DDR SDRAM ondersteunt. Met Socket478 biedt dit plankje plaats aan de nieuwe Pentium 4 Prescott (Willamette op Socket478) processoren en aan de later dit jaar verwachtte Northwoods, die een die-shrink en performance verhogende wijzigingen mee zullen krijgen. De TH7II-RAID biedt daarmee een interessante upgradepath van 1,3GHz tot 2,4GHz en hoger.

Het mobo heeft als belangrijkste kenmerk, naast de Highpoint HPT370 IDE RAID controller, het uitgebreide en verfijnde SoftMenu III. FiringSquad oordeelt dat de TH7II-RAID hiermee in haar klasse, wat tweakinstellingen betreft, de koppositie van de Asus P4T overneemt. De FSB laat zich met SoftMenu III instellen in 1MHz increments en reikt vanaf 100MHz tot maar liefst 255MHz. Verder liet zich het CPU core Voltage instellen van 1,1V-2,2V: tot 1,9V in stapjes van 0,025V en vanaf 1,95V in stappen van 0,05V. De clock multipliers rijkten in het beta BIOS van 10,0x tot 24,0x. De FSB van deze TH7II-RAID liet zich opkrikken naar 157MHz, wat met de quad-pumped bus effektief 628MHz opleverde. Alle geteste i850 mobo's performden goed, vrijwel gelijk en zeer stabiel:

With 1MHz bus increments in excess of 200MHz, there are plenty of bus options avaialable for overclockers. In addition, the easy-to-use interface is clean and well laid out - there are no important settings hidden underneath pages and pages of submenus. Quite frankly we're all wondering what ABIT's going to do to top SoftMenu III, as everything we need is easily available with a few keystrokes.

Stability: We've noticed that all of the 850 motherboards we've tested are incredibly stable. These boards can take severe punishment and keep on ticking! As always, we used our tried and true procedure of running infinite loops of SiSoft's burn-in wizard along with a batch run of 50 iterations of Business Winstone 2001 running in the background and the system still refused to crash.

While Intel's had its fair share of mistakes over the past few years, you've got to give them credit: they build incredibly stable chipsets and they provide excellent support to motherboard manufacturers. As a result, we get exceptionally stable motherboards like the ABIT TH7II-RAID.

[...] Once we've taken a look at the other mPGA 478 offerings we'll provide a motherboard comparison and award our Editor's Choice Award to the best product.

Despite this, we're pretty convinced that the TH7II-RAID will be among the best 478-pin 850 motherboards once the other players show up. But for right now, ABIT's the top company to beat. We're really looking forward to testing this board with Intel's upcoming 2GHz+ Pentium 4 processors. It's pretty amazing watching MDK2 and Quake 3 fly by in excess of 200 frames per second. Kudos to the team at ABIT for putting together yet another top-notch motherboard.

Aikiba en Users-side hebben een aantal plaatjes geschoten van de Tyan Tiger K7, waar eerder aan gerefereerd werd als TigerMP. Zoals al bekend was heeft Tyan met dit derde AMD 760MP moederbord zwaar in de kosten gesneden door geen Ultra160 SCSI, onboard video en onboard ethernet mee te leveren. De prijs van het ding zal dan waarschijnlijk ook rond de duizend gulden komen te liggen in Nederland. Interessant is verder dat het AGP Pro slot vervangen is door een normale gleuf. Dit lijkt misschien niet belangrijk, maar als je bedenkt dat Tyan de zwaarste vorm van AGP Pro (110 Watt) heeft geïmplementeerd in haar vorige ontwerpen kun je het voordeel wel voelen aankomen; de Tiger K7 heeft géén speciale 460 Watt voeding nodig en kan op een normale ATX worden aangesloten.

Zoiah heeft van een mysterieuze bron een aantal benchmarks in handen gekregen van een ATi Radeon RV200, de chip die de low-end uitvoeringen van de Radeon 2 van kracht zal voorzien en volgende week officiëel wordt gepresenteerd. De kaart draaide in overeenstemming met eerdere berichten op 230MHz en was voorzien van 183MHz geheugen. Hoewel het niet te garanderen is lijkt het veilig om te zeggen dat het om DDR gaat. De tests werden gedaan op een Pentium 4 systeem, maar onduidelijk is op welke snelheid deze draaide. Dat maakt in principe ook niet uit, want het gaat natuurlijk om de vergelijking met de concurrenten van nVidia. In 3DMark 2000 zit de kaart tussen de prestaties van de MX400 en GTS in, maar in de moderne 2001 versie van de populaire benchmark moet de GTS het toch echt afleggen tegen de nieuwste budget-kaart van ATi. Voorzichtig concluderen we dat ATi een winnaar in handen heeft en blijven ondertussen rustig wachten op directe confrontatie tussen R200 en GeForce3:

De mannen van CDR-Info hebben een review gebakken van Mitsumi's CR-4808TE. Deze brander schrijft op 16 speed, herschrijft op 8 speed en leest op 48 speed. Digitale Audio Extraction wordt uitgevoerd op ongeveer 17x. Mitsumi heeft twee verschillende versies van deze brander op de markt gebracht. De eerste batch beschikte over een 8MB buffer, maar de nieuwe retail drives zullen slechts een 2MB buffer hebben. De gebruikte anti-coaster technologie is ExacLink. ExacLink is een light version van SafeBurn, wat wordt gebruikt bij de Yahama 2200X serie. Zoals gewoonlijk wordt de drive uitgebreid getest bij CDR-Info en zijn er veel benchmarks te vinden. De lage prijs maakt het een behoorlijk interessante drive. Hieronder de conclusie:

Mitsumi's Cd-recording proposal at 16x writing speed has missed to include something important...The full 10x re-writing speed. Almost all other competitor drives include this feature. The drive's other features (16x CLV, ExacLink anti-coaster technology, build-in media quality detection system) make it an interesting case for users who wish to enter the recording area with a cheap and good performer. The drive didn't have problems with various CDR media while the area in which some users might be dissatisfied is the low reading performance with DAE/protected CDs and of course the fact that no working SD2 backups can be made. Last but not least, Mitsumi certainly could add a HS-RW media in the retail package. Why the possible user has to pay for it?

The drive can be found from 95$-110$ in the market (in 'bare' form), which makes it an attractive solution. LiteOn 16x is around 91$, Teac 516EB 115$ and PleXWriter PX-W1610A 162$.

Atlas05 wees ons op een brief van Cistron Telecom waarin deze ISP in wollige bewoordingen te kennen geeft dat ADSL via Cistron Telecom wellicht niet leverbaar zal zijn. Cistron Telecom geeft als reden hiervoor het beëindigen van de dienstverlening voor het spraakverkeer van KPN Telecom aan Cistron Telecom. De spraakdiensten van Cistron Telecom vervallen per 21 september aanstaande en er wordt gezocht naar een collega ADSL-provider om de ADSL dienstverlening voort te zetten.

Een ADSL aansluiting via Cistron Telecom heeft als gevolg dat zowel spraakverkeer als ADSL-verkeer via Cistron Telecom loopt. Het is dan ook noodzakelijk dat Cistron Telecom via KPN Telecom telefoondiensten aan kan bieden zodat klanten van Cistron Telecom KPN Telecom-klanten kunnen bellen en vice versa. Door het beëindigen van de dienstverlening met betrekking tot spraakverkeer door KPN Telecom, zijn Cistron Telecom klanten nu dus verplicht alsnog een aansluiting te nemen bij KPN Telecom voor het normale spraakverkeer:

Indien het mogelijk blijkt de ADSL dienstverlening te continueren, dient u voor uw reguliere telefoonverkeer een extra analoge of ISDN2 aansluiting aan te vragen. Wij zullen u hier uiterlijk zaterdag 18 augustus over informeren, zodat u op dat moment kunt beslissen of u uw aansluiting al of niet naar KPN terug wenst te porteren.

mbravenboer schrijft: "In een open brief heeft Sun de frontale aanval geopend op de recente beslissing van Microsoft om geen Java Virtual Machine in Windows XP mee te leveren. In de open brief, die in verschillende grote kranten verschenen is, beschuldigt Sun Microsoft van het beperken van de keuzevrijheid van de computer gebruikers door Java uit Windows XP te verwijderen. Het bedrijf roept grote OEM's op om de Java Virtual Machine standaard mee te leveren. Onlangs is er door O'Reilly al in een initiatief opgestart met hetzelfde doel.

Ook zal Sun binnenkort haar eigen Java plug-in updaten om Windows gebruikers nog betere Java ondersteuning te kunnen leveren. Internet Explorer biedt echter niet de mogelijkheid om een andere Java Virtual Machine te gebruiken voor standaard applets, alleen degenen die hier expliciet om vragen gebruiken de geïnstalleerde plug-in. Daarom zijn gebruikers van Internet Explorer op dit moment nog steeds genoodzaakt om voor andere applets de sterk verouderde Microsoft Java VM te gebruiken. C|Net schrijft:"

Because Internet Explorer does not use a plug-in architecture like other browsers, such as AOL Time Warner's Netscape 6.1, it only supports Microsoft's JVM. That means Internet Explorer uses an older, outdated JVM instead of the newer, faster and more flexible JVM version 1.3.1. Java programs running anywhere else in Windows XP, or older versions of the operating system, can use version 1.3.1 if it is installed. But with most Java programs running in browsers, Microsoft's older version has in some ways created a roadblock for the programming language's advance, say analysts.

Harrah acknowledged that response to Microsoft's decision to pull the JVM has been quite positive in some quarters.

"Some of the reaction I've seen from the developer community has been exactly that: 'Hallelujah, we don't have to deal with this old Microsoft browser, we can finally deliver the latest and greatest JVM,'" he said.

Recognizing that opportunity, Sun plans to deliver a JVM fully usable by all programs in Windows XP, including Internet Explorer 6.

"What we are doing is developing a JVM that will reside inside the XP operating system that will be callable by any browser," Harrah said. "We expect to have the usual excellent Windows support when XP ships."

Bij GameSpot valt te lezen dat John Carmack gisteren op QuakeCon 2001 een kleine real-time demo heeft laten zien van het spel Doom III. Volgens de aanwezigen indrukwekkend. De nieuwe Doom engine verschilt visueel voornamelijk van de Quake III engine in de manier van belichting. In plaats van voorberekende light maps wordt er gebruik gemaakt van een real-time per-pixel lichtmodel. Daarnaast wordt er zwaar gebruik gemaakt van bumpmapping en andere texture effecten om de kwijlfactor van het spel te verhogen. Dit alles vormt wel een zware belasting voor de videokaart. De bedoeling is dat het spel op een GeForce3 met 30FPS loopt:

The demon, a creature returning from the original Doom games, has been transformed by the leap in graphics quality, and now can be seen walking lithely on its four feet in a way that conveys frightening power. Another scene showed a demon walking through a flaming environment, full of particle-based sparks. A more action-filled shot centered on a Strogg breaking through a many-paned window, shattering the glass in a leap that could have been straight out of a sci-fi action film.

John Carmack went on to talk about what makes the next Doom engine a generational leap beyond Quake III: Arena. The big visual difference is due to a per-pixel lighting model that will require an average of five to six rendering passes on GeForce256, GeForce2, or Radeon cards, which represent the minimum that id plans to support for the game. The effects on some individual pixels in a scene may require up to 50 passes (graphics chip clock cycles). The game is intended to run at 30 frames per second on a GeForce3 with all visual options on, although it will certainly be faster on future hardware.

In tegenstelling tot wat er eerst verwacht werd, zal de Amerikaanse overheid toch geen stappen ondernemen om de release van Windows XP te blokkeren. Behoorlijke problemen met onder andere America Online en Kodak leken tot een XP-verbod te leiden, maar gelukkig voor Microsoft en wellicht de complete IT-branche, zal het zover niet komen. De anti-trust advocaten hebben namelijk besloten om pas achteraf de monopolie-onderdelen van Windows XP aan de rechter voor te leggen, in plaats van dit nu al te doen.

De reden hiervoor is dat men verwacht, dat het niet uitkomen van Windows XP grote gevolgen voor de hele IT-branche zou hebben. Bovendien zou een oplossing voor de lange termijn steeds moeilijker te vinden worden, wat uiteindelijk tot de beslissing geleid heeft. Het lijkt erop dat er weinig meer in de weg zal staat voor een snelle release, iets wat Microsoft dan ook zeer graag wil. Als het allemaal meezit, zullen consumenten het nieuwe besturingssysteem dan ook al binnen twee maanden kunnen installeren:
