JAMF fietste langs IpKonfig en zag daar The Lanster, een dure (rond de 1000 gulden) maar uitgebreide kast van Wahoo Computers. Het ding is net als de Coolermaster ATC-200 geheel opgebouwd uit aluminium, voorzien van twee 80mm en een 92mm fan, een fanbus met vier aansluitingen en een 350 Watt voeding die ontworpen is om koel te blijven. Verder zitten er een handvat en draagband aan om hem makkelijk mee te kunnen zeulen naar LAN-parties. Om het geheel extra kewl te maken zit er ook een pre-installed raam in, inclusief liquid neon lamp. Het bedrijf kan zelfs een clan-logo voor je etsen en stopt machinaal rond gemaakte en gekleurde IDE kabels in het pakket. Het is dus zo compleet als het maar zijn kan en het enige nadeel dat men kon ontdekken naast de prijs was het feit dat de voeding dicht bij de processor zit, waardoor het lastig wordt een lompe koeler te gebruiken:

For a pc case that has been modded for gamers with a futuristic design inside and out, this case surely takes the cake. It is not common to find an online store that will mod your computer case, and it's even harder to find a online company to mod your case the way you want it. Not many companies will professionally mount a FanBus straight onto the front panel of the case. The Lanster is definitely a piece of work. It is not often that we come across a pc case that is professionally modded.

Installing the motherboard and hard drives were very simple. I did not run into any problems installing any components, and installation went rather quickly. PCI/ISA/AGP cards are quick to install due to the thumbscrews provided.

De Automatisering Gids meldt dat Maxtor een verlies van bijna 320 miljoen dollar over het tweede kwartaal van zijn boekjaar heeft gepresenteerd. Dat komt neer op 1,35 dollar per aandeel. In de zelfde periode vorig jaar bedroeg de winst van de harde schijven fabrikant nog 13,2 miljoen dollar.

Een oorzaak hiervan is een eenmalige last van 249 miljoen dollar, die samenhangt met de overname van de harde schijvendivisie van Quantum. Het zogenaamde operationele verlies bedraag 30 dollarcent per aantal. Dit verlies is volgens Maxtor gedeeltelijk te wijten aan de ingrijpende prijsverlagingen voor een oudere productlijn van het overgenomen Quantum.

Jeffrey Haluska van SocketA.com trakteert ons op een review van het Shuttle AK11 moederbord. Dit plankje is gebaseerd op de KT133A en beschikt dus over een VT8363A Northbridge en een VT82C686B Southbridge. Het plankje kan Socket A processoren tot 1200MHz aan en beschikt over drie 168 pins DIMM sloten. Uitbreidingsmogelijkheden zijn er genoeg te vinden. Zo beschikt het plankje over één AGP slot, 6 PCI sloten en een CNR slot. Standaard heb je de beschikking over twee USB poorten, maar dit kun je uitbreiden naar vier met een onboard kabeltje. Over de overclockmogelijkheden is de reviewer wel te spreken. Voltage en FSB kunnen via het BIOS worden ingesteld en de multiplier via jumpers. De prestaties van het bord zijn redelijk. Het plankje had alleen problemen met wat double sided RAM. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

I think this has to be one of the best value KT133A boards out. If you don't need RAID, look at this board for its strong performance. I highly recommend this board to somebody who is building their first system. The manual will help anybody install it without any problems. Just remember to install the ram before putting in the video card.

Op ZDNet vertellen een aantal hoge heren van bekende open source projecten als Samba, Apache en Sendmail dat ze bang zijn afhankelijk te worden van Microsoft door software te ontwikkelen voor .NET. Het bleek namelijk dat er een patent rust op de manier waarop wachtwoorden gecodeerd en opgeslagen worden in Windows. Hoewel dat maar een klein stukje van het hele protocol is zullen deze functies wel geïmplementeerd moeten worden in de projecten om volledig compatible te zijn. Door over een tijdje dit soort 'verborgen' patenten op tafel te leggen zou Microsoft geld kunnen gaan vragen aan haar concurrenten.

De ECMA, het overkoepelend orgaan dat van .NET een internationale standaard aan het maken is, zegt dat de angst onterecht is; als men licentiegeld zou willen vragen voor een bepaald patent zou dit openbaar gemaakt moeten worden volgens de regels waar Microsoft zich aan houdt. Toch heeft Ximian een advocaat gehuurd om te voorkomen dat er een claim gemaakt kan worden op Mono:

Neoseeker heeft een review gemaakt van de Samsung SM-308 combo drive. Met deze drive kun je dus zowel DVD's afspelen (maar niet opnemen) als CD-R's en CD-RW's branden. De SM-308 is de opvolger van de SM-304 en is ten opzichte van z'n voorganger twee keer zo snel. De snelheden liggen als volgt: 8X/4X/32X; DVD's worden op 8X afgespeeld. Verder beschikt de SM-308 over 2MB cache die het produceren van onderzetters moet voorkomen. Over algemeen was men zeer tevreden over deze drive:

With Easy CD Creator, Easy is the keyword; installation is simple, and the whole program is based on an obvious and clean interface. Installation was simple and the drive was always totally whisper quiet. I found that I could easily replace all the optical drives on my computer with just this one. I found no problems at all during subjective testing of this unit.

Ex-televisieomroep Veronica gaat per 7 augustus breedbandige content aanbieden via het web, zo meldt Planet Multimedia. Oud-Veronicamedewerker Adam Curry, tegenwoordig eigenaar van het breedbandbedrijf KGBE, zal de content leveren. De site zal worden opgedeeld in twee "meetingpoints", met ieder een andere content. Er zullen ondermeer reportages 'uitgezonden' worden; zo gaan er twee verslaggevers met een camera op pad, waarbij de internetter thuis mede kan bepalen waar de reis heen voert.

KGBE heeft de diverse concepten bedacht en getest. De vereniging-zonder-zender Veronica heeft met de productie van de content niets van doen, maar zal deze inkopen. Zodoende probeert Veronica te overleven als internetbedrijf. Men zal daarbij tevens de mensen gaan voorlichten over ADSL-toegang, uitleggen waar dit verkrijgbaar is en wat de voordelen ervan zijn.

Bij Hexus.net staat een interessant artikel over de vele IBM-harddisken die het loodje schijnen te leggen. Dat bepaalde versies uit de vorige serie (de 75GXP's) gevoelig voor storingen waren, was bij de meeste tweakers wel bekend (zie ook ons forum). De situatie lijkt zich echter te herhalen bij de nieuwere 60GXP-versies! Vooral in RAID-configuraties vallen ze bij bosjes neer. De schrijver laat weten al 5 van zijn 11 IBM-schijven te hebben verloren, en sommige retailers schijnen een nóg hoger uitvalpercentage te hebben:

We have about 11 IBM drives used in the Hexus systems. So far 4 have failed, and one last night corrupted itself.

I have spoken to some local retailers to me here, and we are getting reports that they are getting 15 failures a week and they only sell around 60 systems a month, this is nearly a 100% failure. Most companies are suffering from 65 -> 70% failure. Not all drives will fail but a HIGH percentage are failing. Hasten to say they have now moved to Quantum drives again, which they had moved away from after the Maxtor buyout.

The biggest issue, which faces these companies is that, their customers don’t expect JUST a new hard drive they want more. They want all their data recovered. This is a "NIGHTMARE" for them, they thought that IBM had solved the issue with the introduction of the GXP60 range but these are dieing even more so now. Poepel stuurde ons naar een vier minuten durende video waarin een medewerker van Microsoft een kleine demonstratie geeft van Windows Blackcomb. Over de features en verbeteringen van dit operating systeem, dat helemaal volgens de .NET strategie wordt gebouwd, heb je al vaker kunnen lezen. In het begin van de video zie je kort het inlogscherm met kalender, waarna de desktop zichtbaar wordt. Het startmenu is verplaatst naar de linkerkant van het scherm waar webservices en lokale software naadloos en dynamisch aansluiten. Ook de rest van het systeem is erg gericht op het internet. Een voorbeeld hiervan is "My Pictures", dat zowel offline als online foto's beheert en de mogelijkheid om bestanden van de harde schijf rechtstreeks naar online diensten en applicaties te slepen. Als klein voorbeeld van een .NET service wordt een image editor genoemd die rechtstreeks aan "My Pictures" gekoppeld is. Wat precies off- en online gebeurt moet voor de gebruiker geen zorg zijn om succesvol te zijn met het verkopen van dergelijke abonnementen.

Het tweede voorbeeld van een dienst dat gegeven wordt is de kalender. Met een klik op de knop meld je je aan om voor 75 dollarcent per maand je kalender online te zetten, zodat deze niet meer gebonden is aan één computer of programma. Op het einde laat men nog even zien hoe de interface en de aangeboden diensten per gebruiker kunnen veranderen. De Microsoft medewerker sluit af door duidelijk te maken dat de losse onderdelen er op dit moment misschien niet bijster aantrekkelijk uit zien, maar dat de combinatie ervan waarschijnlijk de toekomst heeft. Overigens heeft Microsoft recent gezegd dat er waarschijnlijk nog een versie tussen Windows XP en Blackcomb komt. Download een 4,7MB grote zip-file met de WMV erin hier.

OCWorkbench heeft een review gemaakt van het eerste retail SiS735 bordje, de ECS K7S5A. SiS735 reference plankjes zijn al eerder gereviewed, waaruit keer op keer bleek dat de chipset makkelijk mee kan komen met bijvoorbeeld de AMD 760 en de ALi MAGiK1. Helaas hebben veel mobofabrikanten tot nu toe weinig aandacht voor het product .

Dit Socket A moederbord heeft ondersteuning voor zowel twee SDR als twee DDR SDRAM reepjes en bevat 5 PCI-sloten, 1xAGP, 1xAMR en onboard audio en LAN. Helaas besteedt ECS niet veel aandacht aan tweakopties, maar een bussnelheid van 150MHz bleek toch mogelijk te zijn. De enigzins gebrekkige overklokmogelijkheden bleken ook het enige minpunt te zijn, want voor de rest zijn de bevindingen gelijk aan die van de SiS735 reference bordjes:

Similar to the 7SID, ECS K7S5A lacks a number of overclocking features DIY users long for. Although ECS included the FSB selections, but they do not allow modification of the multiplier and Voltage. The inclusive of a 10/100 Ethernet port on board is a good move but I do not know whether it will be an option. I would rather have it as a standard feature of all future boards as there are more and more network and broadband users compared to a few years back. Do you think a inclusion of a 56k modem will be useful ?

Installation has never been so simple with only one jumper to meddle with (the CCMOS if 150/150 fails when the ram timings are set too aggressively high). The FSB selections are limited but should suffice as I don't see this as an overclocking board. 100/100, 100/133, 133/133, 112/112, 124/124, 133/166, 166/166.

Documentation is straight to the point. Overall, it ECS K7S5A will appeal to those who needs a low cost DDR high performance mainboard. More SIS735 boards should be out by late August and we look forward to seeing revised editions to include more functionalities onto the board to make it more complete.

EaS vond via het forum van Ace's Hardware het nieuwtje dat Intel op haar Developer Forum eind deze maand een nieuwe SMP technologie wil demonstreren. Op pagina twaalf van de brochure heeft men het over een aantal lezingen over Next-Generation Multiprocessing Technology. Het programma belooft dat een prototype op de beurs aanwezig zal zijn en dat er onder andere uitleg zal worden gegeven over de techniek zelf, het programmeren ervoor en het bouwen van systemen er omheen. Wat voor leuks er precies te zien zal zijn is helaas nog niet bekend, men speculeert dat Jackson Technology uit de doeken zal worden gedaan. Volgens de laatste geruchten zou dit een vorm van SMT zijn die eind 2002 in Xeon processors met Gallatin core wordt geïntroduceerd:

Luke Roberts schrijft dat er bij RipNet-UK.com een review is verschenen over de ZM17 koeler van Zalman. Deze koperen koeler is in het bezit van een apart design en is volledig passief, er zijn dus geen herrie producerende fans. Naast stil is de performance van de koeler ook heel behoorlijk. Een GeForce2 onder full-load weet ie bijna even goed te koelen als een Blue Orb :

I have to say that I was firstly surprised, and secondly impressed, by the Zalman's thermal performance. Only 1ºC behind the Blorb at full load is a pretty good showing. In addition I was quite surprised at how little the GeForce heated up under load, but conditions were exactly the same for each cooler so it seems like a fair comparison (ambient temperature was a typically cool 21ºC, that's a Cornish summer day for you).

So on that showing is the ZM17 a viable alternative to active cooling? Well Zalman are making a big deal about low or zero noise cooling solutions, and the first thing to bear in mind is that a Blue Orb doesn't actually make a whole lot of noise anyway. Certainly if you're running a 6800 rpm CPU cooler you won't notice the difference. And crucially the mounting screws on the ZM17 don't line up with the holes on the Hercules GF 2, which I'd imagine are in a standard position. This can be overcome by using the thermal adhesive that Zalman supply, but then you're committed - and nobody likes too much commitment, do they? On the plus side of the equation the Zalman performs very well, falling only just short of an active cooler, and it looks pretty as a picture into the bargain. If Zalman sort out the mounting screw positions, and then maybe start offering the ZM17 in a choice of anodised colours, then they could have a winner on their hands.

Bij Ace's Hardware is een review neergezet over de opvolger van de Matrox G450, Matrox G550. Deze kaart heeft als nieuwe feature een geavanceerde versie van matrix palette skinning aan boord. Niet voor gebruik in games, maar voor het gebruik in een soort van chatprogramma van Matrox. Verder is de chip een klein beetje verbeterd en produceert ie nu 250Mpixels/sec in plaats van 125Mpixels/sec. Maar door de gelimiteerde bandbreedte van de kaart is het verschil in de benchmarks tussen beide kaarten niet groter dan 30 procent. Zoals gebruikelijk blinkt Matrox dus niet uit op het gebied van 3D snelheid, maar qua 2D is er nog genoeg te genieten:

Matrox new G550 still has the same qualities as the G450: superb 2D-quality, the most productive Dual display solution and good 2D-speed. The G550 comes with solid Linux and Windows drivers, a very nice software bundle (DVD-player, Simply3D...) and has a comprehensive, well-cared-for manual. Combine this with the very sharp 125$ price tage, and this is still the best card for the 2D-professional.

The 3D Gaming performance of the G550, although it is definitely better than the G450, leaves a lot to be desired. Sure, this card is not targeted at the hard core 3D-gamer, but a lot of professionals out there do not want to swap their videocard out when they play a 3D-game. Matrox simply needs to come up with a better 3D core, because the 3D core - still based on the good old G400- of the G550 is now 3 years old. And that is a lot of time in this fast paced industry....

De Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group (PCI SIG) heeft vrijdag voor Arapahoe gekozen als opvolger van de PCI standaard. Arapahoe is een seriële point-to-point interface die op meer dan 10GHz kan lopen. Het zal nog minstens enkele jaren duren voordat er werkende chips komen die gebruik maken van deze interface, tot die tijd zullen we het moeten doen met PCI of PCI-X. Verrassend genoeg heeft AMD ook gestemd voor Arapahoe als nieuwe standaard, en niet voor haar eigen Hypertransport:

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), whose HyperTransport interconnect architecture is often viewed as a rival scheme, surprisingly voted in favor of the endorsement, said Gabrielle Satori, head of the recently announced HyperTransport consortium. "We voted yes. HyperTransport is actually complementary to this," Satori said. "There are similarities between the two, but one thing we can't forget is that we have 12.8 Gbytes/second now, and two years from now we'll have much more than that."

HyperTransport, based on a low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) that can scale up to 32 bits in either direction, will support Arapahoe when the need becomes apparent, Satori said. "We are now building one HyperTransport link to multiple PCI-X links, and if (Arapahoe) is really necessary for users, and the market really needs Arapahoe, we'd just evolve the [HyperTransport] spec and go into it. We are simply doing as we did for all the other I/O technologies."
