Bij RoRuPC is een review te vinden van Thermaltake's nieuwste pogingen om het leven van de socket-A eigenaar weer wat aangenamer te maken. De Mini Super Orb is een aangepaste versie van de Super Orb, die wat beter op druk bezette moederborden geplaatst moet kunnen worden - en dus iets kleiner is. De Volcano II is meer gericht op het high-end segment en moet kunnen concurreren met koelers als de GlobalWin FOP38 en de Alpha PEP66.

Beide koelers werden getest op een AMD Thunderbird 1GHz. Met allebei de Thermaltakes liet deze processor zich gewillig opvoeren tot 1150MHz. Er is wel duidelijk te zien dat de Volcano II een streepje voor heeft, al kan hij het nog niet halen bij voorgenoemde concurrenten:

De Mini Super Orb wordt door de reviewer sowieso niet aanbevolen, omdat de grote kracht die nodig is om de koeler te monteren de core van de processor kan laten afbrokkelen.

Uiteraard ( ) hadden we weer meer dan 1 M méér dan AnandTech, en wel 2.73 M blocks

Digit Life heeft een review gebakken van het Asus CUV4X-DLS dual-processor FC-PGA moederbord, gebaseerd op VIA's Apollo Pro 133A (694XDP/686B) chipset.

De specificaties van de CUV4X-DLS in het kort:

Opvallend nadeel is het ontbreken van een narrow-SCSI connector. Wie dus scanners, CD-ROM's en dergelijke wil aansluiten is alsnog aangewezen op een insteekkaart. De lay-out is volgens de reviewers heel behoorlijk, op een potentiëel probleem met eventuele SCSI-bekabeling na. Overclocking is in principe wel mogelijk doordat er meerdere FSB-frequenties ter beschikking staan, maar daar houdt 't dan ook meteen mee op: géén Vcore en Vio instellingen dus. Dat maakt de CUV4X-DLS dus niet tot een bordje voor de echte tweaker die z'n PIII-700E's graag op 1GHz wil laten draaien.

In de benchmarks die op het bord worden losgelaten weert 'ie zich goed, en blijkt één van de snellere borden in z'n klasse te zijn. Daarnaast doet de Asus z'n werk ook stabiel, en dat is - zeker voor een dual-processor plank - natuurlijk een eerste vereiste. Al met al denken de reviewers dat Asus met de CUV4X-DLS een prima bord heeft gemaakt:

ASUS has created a perfect motherboard which can replace the Intel 440BX based boards on the market of high-efficient workstations and servers. It means that ASUS fans can use their products not only for home applications. The problems concerning soft support seem to be mostly related with VIA and I hope they will be solved in the nearest time.

OCWorkbench heeft een review gemaakt van Enermax' liefste: de EG651P-VE. Een ècht dikke ATX voeding met een totaal vermogen van maar liefst 650 Watt, en volgens Enermax zelf de zwaarste PSII voeding op de markt.

De EG651 is een typische Enermax voeding, met alle karaktertrekjes van z'n andere familieleden: prettig lange kabels, twee fans, véél aansluitingen, en als bijzonderheid vergulde grilles voor z'n fans. Bovendien beschikt 'ie naast een standaard ATX-aansluiting ook nog eens over een 6-pens 'auxiliary' connector die je op sommige high-end plankjes nodig hebt en tenslotte heeft 'ie ook nog een 4-pens +12V aansluiting die met name bij Pentium 4 moederborden nodig is: helemaal up-to-date dus. Ook het inwendige van de Enermax valt positief op door de toepassing van een flinke heatsink.

De reviewers zijn erg goed te spreken over deze voeding: de meetresultaten zijn allesbehalve slecht, de voeding is ondanks z'n twee fans lekker stil, aangenaam koel, en er is ook prettig mee te werken. Niet verbazingwekkend dat ze dus ook met een erg positieve conclusie komen:

This is a great PSU. With all the power, the added luxury of gold plated grills, tube wrapped cables and a special advanced heatsink inside this is one heck of a PSU. With prices in the region of $150 you can be sure you'll get a solid performer with build quality to match. The only time I would not recommend buying this is if you are the casual overclocker as the chances are your money will be spent better elsewhere. Enermax knows one thing for sure, how to make great PSU's. If you're after a high end PSU for that high performing rig you're making them look no further than the Enermax EG651P-VE.

Op WebWereld is te lezen dat Napster afgelopen vrijdagavond een lijst van 135.000 liedjes heeft gekregen geblokkeerd moeten worden. Op de lijst staan de namen van de artiesten, albums en songs, alsmede de namen van de bestanden zoals ze in de zoekresultaten voorkomen. De platenbazen zullen er echter een dagtaak aan hebben om de lijst up-to-date te houden, er zijn namelijk talloze trucjes en zelfs speciale programma's om de filters te omzeilen:

Nu al ontstaat er een kat en muisspelletje tussen de muziekindustrie en gebruikers van Napster. Deze gebruikers veranderen de naam van een liedje zodanig dat ze door een filter kunnen heenglippen. Het liedje 'Unforgiven' van Metallica wordt dan bijvoorbeeld 'Un4given'. Er zijn zelfs al programmaatjes - zoals de PigEncoder van Aimster - op de markt die het hernoemen van de liedjes automatiseren.

Sommige songs worden nu al geblokkeerd. Zo is het bovengenoemde Unforgiven niet via Napster te downloaden als men zoekt op 'Unforgiven'. 'Un4given' geeft wel resultaat. Overigens kan er ook nog worden uitgeweken naar de zogeheten Open Napster-servers; hier geeft het intypen van de zoekterm Unforgiven meer dan genoeg downloadmogelijkheden.

Platenmaatschappijen zijn overigens best bereid met Napster te gaan samenwerken, echter moet er dan wel een beter systeem komen voor copyright kwesties. Als het filter komende woensdag 100% werkt is de eerste stap in ieder geval gezet. Mocht het filter niet het gewenste effect hebben kan het zijn dat de dienst haar deuren moet sluiten.

Abit heeft aangekondigd dat het bedrijf op de komende CeBIT zes nieuwe moederborden zal presenteren, waaronder de KR7, KG7, VR6, ST6 en TW7. De KR7 en KG7 zijn beide Socket A mobo's met als basis respectievelijk de VIA Apollo KT266 en AMD 760 chipset. Aan het Socket 370 front biedt Abit de nieuwe VR6 en ST6 mobo's, die waarschijnlijk gebruik maken van de VIA Apollo Pro266 en Intel 815EP chipsets. TW7 is de vermoedelijke naam van Abit's eerste Pentium 4 moederbord. Deze plank heeft volgens eerdere speculaties 4 RIMM slots en een AGP Pro sloot. Over de andere plankjes zijn nog geen details bekend, afgezien van het feit dat de KG7, KR7, VR6 en ST6 geleverd kunnen worden in versies met een onboard HighPoint HPT370 IDE RAID controller:

Er is weer nieuws van het Rambus-front. EBN meldt in dit artikel weer het één en ander over de niet aflatende stroom processen tegen Rambus, dit maal met als aanleiding de aanstaande zaak van Infineon tegen Rambus. Kern van het verhaal is het tijdstip waarop Rambus haar patenten zou hebben aangemeld. Het eerste patent dateert namelijk van 16 april 1990, en Infineon redeneert nu dat Rambus dit patent dus zou hebben moeten melden via de Joint Electron Devices Engineering Council, kortweg JEDEC. Dat is dus niet gebeurd, terwijl Rambus in die tijd wèl lid was van de JEDEC en dus haar patentrechten heeft verzwegen.

De JEDEC heeft in 1993, mèt Rambus aan tafel, open standaarden gedefiniëerd betreffende SDRAM en DDR SDRAM, zodat, althans naar mening van JEDEC en Infineon, Rambus géén rechten meer kan ontlenen aan haar patent. Rambus brengt daar tegenin dat zij haar rechten ontleent aan patenten die in 1997 en 1998 zijn ingediend, en die de facto amendementen zijn op het originele patent uit 1990. Mocht Infineon's claim gehonoreerd worden dan is de weg gebaand voor een anti-trust zaak tegen Rambus:

Infineon briefs allege Rambus failed to disclose the fact it had filed the SDRAM patent claims prior to spending four years in Joint Electron Devices Engineering Council (JEDEC) deliberations to set open industry standards for the technology. If true, Infineon's claim could serve as the grounds for its antitrust claim.

However, sources within JEDEC argue that the open SDRAM standards were ratified by the council in March 1993 and supersede the Rambus patents. JEDEC chairman Desi Rhoden said chip makers relied on the open standard to build their SDRAM and double-data-rate SDRAM devices with the understanding that no potential patent conflicts existed.

In its brief, Rambus is contending that it owns rights to the technology because its 1997 and 1998 patent claims are actually amended versions of an original application filed April 16, 1990.

Sources close to Infineon said this argument points to a possible discrepancy in Rambus' patent chronology. Specifically, they said if the company filed in 1990, then it did in fact violate JEDEC disclosure rules when it was a council member from 1992 to 1996. If true, Infineon could build a case that Rambus engaged in restraint of trade and ultimately violated U.S. antitrust laws.

Bij Hardware Daily vinden we een drie pagina's tellende review van de Benwin GX-6 speakerset. Dit setje bestaat uit een 18 Watt rms subwoofer en een tweetal 5.5 Watt rms satelliet speakers, die een speciaal plat ontwerp hebben waardoor er volgens het bedrijf een voller en helderder geluid ontstaat dan bij de gebruikelijke 'cones'. Omdat elk deel van het paneel onafhankelijk van de andere delen kan bewegen. Het paneel heeft dan ook geen behuizing nodig om trillingen te versterken. De reviewer is goed te spreken over de kwaliteit van de set en voor de prijs van 80 dollar hoef je het ook niet te laten. Alleen de 3D Sound knop, die het effect van twee extra speakers moet hebben, zorgde voor wat verwarring:

Last on the agenda is that mysterious 3D Sound button. I played with this button rather extensively, with both music and gaming. The purpose supposedly is to provide the illusion of a 4 speaker system within the confines of a 2 speaker setup. The method seems to be a built-in mechanism for changing the sound to one with a severe and chamber like echo. In songs, this could sound terrible, decent, or sometimes even relatively good. I found that with this turned on you could often hear background vocals quite crisply that were almost non-existent before. I also tried this out in games such as Unreal Tournament, where it increased the sounds of gunfire and gave a bit more environmental sound too, also making it sound louder. This button is going to be a matter of preference rather than an end all solution, but it works in some cases.

[...] The GX-6 accomplishes what it set out to do, provide an alternative to mainstream speakers, with quality sound all it’s own, while still remaining cost effective. The only complaints I could find where with the subwoofer at under high stress, and perhaps the lack of a headphone jack on either of the speakers, (a useful feature when you need to keep that sound down.) Considering the price is now at $79.95, this isn’t a bad deal for some flat panel speakers. So go out and go flat panel.

AnandTech pleziert ons vandaag met een review van het Gigabyte GA-7ZMM microATX moederbordje. Het bordje is bedoeld voor Socket A processoren en voorzien van de VIA KM133 chipset, die opvalt vanwege de in de northbridge geïntegreerde S3 ProSavage videologica. De southbridge is de welbekende VIA 686B die we ook tegenkomen in combinatie met de KT133A chipset.

Het bordje is als gezegd uitgevoerd in microATX formaat en biedt als gevolg daarvan dus ook niet echt veel uitbreidingsmogelijkheden: slechts 2 DIMM bankjes, 3 PCI slots, een AMR slot en gelukkig is men ook het AGP slot niet vergeten, dus wie de geïntegreerde video niet wil gebruiken kan terugvallen op een AGP kaart naar keuze. Naast de geïntegreerde video is het plankje standaard ook voorzien van AC'97 audio en is er een optie voor een on-board Soundblaster.

De mogelijkheden voor de tweaker zijn helaas ook zeer beperkt: er is keuze uit slechts een handvol FSB frequenties en daar houdt 't dan ook al mee op. De reviewers merken terecht op dat dit bord met name interessant zal zijn voor OEM's die op basis van een dergelijk plankje en een Duron processor natuurlijk een eenvoudig doch goed presterend systeem kunnen bouwen voor een relatief lage prijs. De prestaties van het plankje zijn niet echt bijzonder, en de stabiliteit is ook niet bijzonder goed, hetgeen de reviewers de volgende conclusies ontlokt:

Its performance is not particularly attractive. In some occasions it is better than the reference board, but in some occasions there is quite some gap between it and the reference board. It obviously means that Gigabyte still has a lot to work on. Feature wise, the GA-7ZMM definitely loses quite a few points here, especially among overclockers where the inclusion of multiplier ratio controls is a prerequisite.

From an OEM point of view, the GA-7ZMM can be a good solution however. [...] Stability of the motherboard is average, but again performance is something Gigabyte still has to work on.

In short, the GA-7ZMM might be a solution for OEM builders, but for general users, who don’t care too much about video performance and want a cheap solution so that they can overclock their Duron processors to the limit, the GA-7ZMM does not seem to be the right choice. They should sit back a little bit and wait for some other solutions, at least one with multiplier ratio settings.

GigaByte heeft een press release de deur uit gedaan waarin ze een nieuw Socket370 DDR moederbord aankondigen. Het gaat om de GA-6RXB met VIA's Apollo Pro266 chipset. Het plankje heeft plaats voor DDR en SDR geheugen, twee DIMM's van elk soort. Daarnaast vinden we 5 PCI slots, AGP Pro, AMR en een RAID controller terug op de printplaat. Verder worden 6 USB poorten ondersteund en is on-board sound van Creative aanwezig. Zoals we van GigaByte gewend zijn vinden ook alle tools terug die door het bedrijf zijn ontwikkeld om bijvoorbeeld makkelijk over te klokken of veilig een BIOS-update uit te voeren:

Electronica-grootgrutter Casio komt op korte termijn met een nieuwe sub-notebook op de markt, de Casio Cassiopeia Fiva. De Fiva is een apparaatje op A5-formaat met een gewicht van ruwweg één kilo en een 8,4" TFT-beeldscherm.

Als processor wordt een Transmeta Crusoe 600MHz gebruikt. Daarnaast is de Fiva onder meer voorzien van een 20GB harddisk, 10/100MBit Ethernet, iEEE1394 FireWire, 56kBit V90 modem en last but not least een CompactFlash-cardslot. Casio claimt dat je met de Fiva maar liefst zes tot 9 uur op één acculading kunt werken, en da's natuurlijk héél erg lang, veel langer dan bijvoorbeeld Sony's C1V notebook die ook met een Crusoe is uitgerust.

De Casio Fiva wordt af fabriek geleverd met twee operating systemen: MS Windows en Linux. De keuze tussen Windows of Linux maak je niet zoals gebruikelijk via de bootmanager LILO, maar, heel bijzonder, via een schakelaar! Helaas zijn verdere bijzonderheden over het gebruikte Linux nog niet bekend.

Hier nog enkele quotes over de Fiva, afkomstig uit een recent artikel op CNet:

"Everybody has been trying to figure out how Linux is going to enter the (notebook) business," said David Ditzel, Transmeta's chief technology officer. "Rather than see a Linux machine that is separate and distinct from a Windows machine, there is going to be a possibility of a peaceful coexistence."

Although not a major notebook name in the United States, Casio could begin to draw some attention, at least from window-shoppers, with its Fiva. The Fiva is a subnotebook that weighs just over 2 pounds, yet contains a 600MHz processor and a 20GB hard drive. More interesting, it contains the companion version of Linux. Average consumers might eventually use the computer's Linux personality for select applications, Ditzel predicted.

"There is a little switch on the side that says A and B. When it's on A, it boots up in Windows. But when you switch it to B, it quick-boots in Linux," Ditzel said. "Suppose you just wanted to listen to some MP3 music or something, and you don't want to wait the three to four minutes for Windows."

De Fiva is in Japan al te koop en wordt binnenkort ook in de Verenigde Staten op de markt gebracht. Wanneer 'ie in ons landje te koop zal zijn is helaas nergens te vinden. Je vindt meer info op de website van fabrikant Casio en in dit artikel op de nieuwssite CNet.

De mannen van VR-zone hebben een review gemaakt van de Thermaltake Volcano II. Deze Socket A draait 4500 rondjes per minuut en zorgt voor een airflow van 36CFM. De koeler veroorzaakt slechts 31,5dBa en is 60x60x25 mm. Zoals uit een eerdere review bleek waren de prestaties van de Volcano II niet echt geweldig. De koeler wordt beoordeeld met een 3/5:

The Volcano II's performance is just slightly above an average cooler. Being cooled by a 36cfm, 4500rpm Everflow F126025BH fan, it is definately not able to edge over the Black Deltas. But on the other hand, the noise level of this cooler is not annoying and in fact, you can hardly notice the soft rattling of the adapter plate.

The Good
Silent, quiet and a great deal of improvement from the earlier Orb series.

The Bad
Extra caution have to be applied while fixing the heatsink clip onto the Socket's catch. Aid of a plier or a slot-type screwdriver to mount the heatsink is advisable.

Bij Hardwareinfo.net is deze week wederom een review van een MP3-speler te vinden. Deze keer is de Nike PSA[play 120 aan de beurt. De speler is vooral gericht op de sportmarkt, wat ook blijkt uit zijn naam: PSA staat namelijk voor Portable Sport Audio. De PSA[play 120 is voorzien van 64 MB geheugen, wat goed is voor ongeveer twee uur muziek indien de muziek met het bestandsformaat WMA in het geheugen wordt gezet. Het apparaatje weegt slechts 77 gram en is met z'n afmetingen 7 cm x 8,5 cm x 2,5 cm makkelijk in je broekzak te stoppen:

De speler voldoet geheel aan de verwachtingen van een goede volwaardige Digital Audio Player. Hoewel de speler in eerste instantie ontworpen is voor de sportmarkt, zullen ook de niet-sporters er veel aan hebben. De speler is door zijn kleine formaat en afstandsbediening gemakkelijk weg te stoppen en toch goed te bedienen. De PSA[play 60 is voorzien van 32 MB geheugen en heeft een adviesprijs van fl. 649,- (295 euro). De 120 variant heeft een adviesprijs van fl. 999,- (453 euro) meegekregen. Voor een gemakkelijk te hanteren MP3-speler met 64 MB geheugen, waar zoveel extra’s en redelijk goede software bij wordt gestopt, is dit absoluut geen verkeerde prijs. De PSA[play 120 krijgt daarom van ons een bronzen award.

Planet GeForce kreeg van een niet nader te noemen Taiwanese videokaart-fabrikant te horen dat nVidia momenteel kampt met lage yields op de productie van GeForce3 chips. Dit zou de reden zijn dat de productie van GeForce3 videokaarten vertraging heeft opgelopen. Ook Asus legt de oorzaak van het probleem bij een gebrekkige levering van chips door nVidia.

nVidia meldt in een reactie dat de ramp-up van de GeForce3 productie normaal verloopt en zelfs beter is dan van de GeForce2 destijds. Het gebruik van TSMC's nieuwe 0,15micron procédé levert volgens nVidia geen uitzonderlijke problemen op. De eerste GeForce3 kaarten kunnen we daarom nog steeds tegen het eind van deze maand op de schappen verwachten:

I just wanted to send you some clarification on the questions you posed over the phone today. The ramp on GeForce3 is pretty normal for high-end ramps and is actually faster than the ramp we saw for GeForce 256. With the new process (.15um) and new die we always have some production issues - these issues are normal when ramping up a new design. Rest assured that there will still be GeForce3 boards in retail by the end of March with OEMs shipping shortly thereafter.

FIC heeft in een press release bekend gemaakt welke producten het bedrijf eind deze maand op de CeBIT ten toon zal stellen. De line-up bestaat onder meer uit een drietal DDR mobo's, twee nieuwe i815EP plankjes en een PDA met StrongARM SA1110 processor en 32MB RAM. Dit apparaatje wordt de eerste PDA die FIC in productie neemt.

De meeste belangstelling zal waarschijnlijk uitgaan naar de nieuwe DDR mobo's van FIC. Deze drie moederborden zijn de AD11, AN11 en FP11, gebaseerd op respectievelijk de AMD 761 northbridge en VIA 686B southbridge, VIA KT266 chipset en VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. De FP11 kan optioneel voorzien worden van een onboard IDE RAID controller. FIC noemt geen details, maar waarschijnlijk betreft het hier de welbekende HPT370 van HighPoint:

New-age Motherboard Solutions

As has always been the case at CeBIT shows, FIC will be introducing a number of its latest motherboard solutions. Much interest has surrounded FIC's premium DDR solution, the 1stMainboard AD11, which in January became the world's first motherboard to be recommended by AMD for support of 266MHz Front Side Bus (FSB).

The combination of 266MHz FSB speed and the increased memory bandwidth of DDR memory technology ensure performance bottlenecks are significantly improved. The AD11 is based around a hybrid chipset consisting of the AMD 761 North Bridge and the VIA 686B South Bridge, and supports the Athlon processor at speeds of up to 1.2GHz.

Additional 1stMainboard DDR solutions on show at the FIC booth will include the AN11, based around the VIA KT266 chipset, and the VIA Pro266 chipset based FP11. Both motherboards are equipped with VIA's advanced V-Link technology, which increases the bandwidth of the bridge architecture from 133MHz to 266MHz and brings a leap forward in performance levels. Additional features of the AN11 include four USB ports, AGP 4X and onboard audio.

A special feature of the FP11 worth noting is support for RAID (levels 0, 1 and 0+1), which stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. In essence, it is a method of combining several hard drives into one unit. RAID provides users with fault tolerance and higher throughput levels than in comparison with a single hard drive or a group of independent hard drives.

FIC will also be showcasing a range of advanced Intel based solutions, including motherboards featuring the new 815EP chipset, namely the FS15 and FS39 motherboards. Both of these solutions offer solid performance with the Intel Pentium III (FCPGA) at speeds of 1GHz and beyond, and 133 MHz FSB.

Performance is enhanced thanks to Intel's enhanced ICH2 Controller Hub, which delivers twice the I/O bandwidth as traditional bridge architecture. Furthermore, the ATX sized FS15 and micro ATX sized FS39 are equipped with ATA 100, giving the fastest data/file transfer rates available, and offer four USB ports and onboard audio.

FIC AD11

Overclockers' Workbench heeft de specificaties gepost van het nieuwe Epox EP-8KHA Socket A moederplankje met VIA KT266 chipset. De 8KHA heeft een layout met 6 PCI slots, 3 184-pins DDR DIMM slots en één gedeeld LMR slotje. Overklokkers zien hun wensen vervuld worden dankzij de aanwezigheid van Vcore, Vi/o en busspeed settings in de BIOS setup van de 8KHA. Verder is het bord voorzien van de bij Epox mobo's inmiddels gebruikelijke P80P POST debugging LED. Epox heeft in tegenstrijd met de huidige trend om IDE RAID controllertjes te plakken op alles dat groen of geel ziet, besloten om de plank niet te voorzien van een onboard IDE RAID chip. Er is hiervoor ook geen ruimte op de PCB gereserveerd, dus er bestaat geen hoop op een RAID versie van de 8KHA:
