In tegenstelling tot sommige eerdere reviews zijn ze erg tevreden over de i815-chipset en noemen ze het een waardige opvolger van de BX. Sysmark, UT was de i815 duidelijk de snelste, in Quake 3 was de i815 echter 12% trager dan de Intel 440BX, de VIA Apollo Pro 133A en de i820":

Well, let's sum up. If we judge by the testing results, the conclusion will be more than evident: new Intel chipset is a success. Disregarding the professional OpenGL graphics, i815 won 6 of the 10 tests. That is why here it is undoubtedly a good successor to i440BX, especially since it supports low-cost PC133 SDRAM. Besides, it is deprived of i440BX drawbacks: it features 133MHz FSB support, AGP 4x and new IDE ATA/66 and ATA/100 interfaces support as well.

At last there appeared a new Intel chipset, which has every chance to become the sales hit. i820 cannot cope with this role because RDRAM is too expensive, and VIA Apollo Pro133A is lagging behind in many tests. The only cause for concern remains the price of i815. The chipset costs about three times as much as VIA Apollo Pro133A, for instance. So, the mainboards may turn out at least $30 more expensive.

And we should keep in mind that the integrated graphics core of i815 performs not quite well in 3D. So don't rely on it here.

Though everything seems so beautiful for i815, this may last not that long. By the end of the year VIA should announce its new Apollo Pro 2000 supporting DDR SDRAM. This solution is supposed to show much higher performance than the systems with PC133 SDRAM. That is why VIA has a really good chance to continue its expansion into the mainstream chipsets market.

Chris Connolly van GamePC heeft een review van de FIC AZ11 moederplank met VIA KT133 chipset neer geplant. Dit plankje is nogal kaal met 3 DIMM sockets en 5 PCI slots. Een AMR of ISA slot is niet aanwezig, evenals de mogelijkheid om de multiplier te tweaken (voor zover de processor dat toelaat). De plank functioneerde stabiel en FSB overclocking lukte tot maximaal 112MHz. Verder bleek de AZ11 net iets beter te presteren dan de MSI K7T Pro:

VIA's KT-133 chipset may still have some kinks to work out, but for the most it should make a lot of gamers happy. The Duron processor itself is simply fantastic, as with the Thunderbirds as well (even though Socket-A T-Birds are in very short supply these days). FIC's AZ-11 is a decent board for being one of the first on the market, but it's lackluster design, cheap audio components, and inability to break AMD's CPU multiplier will most likely make most gamers go elsewhere for their Socket-A platforms. Notable companies like Asus and Abit are on the horizon for having Socket-A boards on the market, which from the initial looks of them, appear to be more focused at the gaming/enthusiast community.

Regardless of the motherboard, AMD's Duron chip keeps impressing us with every passing day. We do worry though that the chip may perform too well for AMD's own good, and that it may yank away from sales from their more expensive Thunderbird series of processors. If newsgroups are a good indication, many people who were thinking of buying a Thunderbird systems are now dead set on going with the Duron, thanks to the near exact same performance and lower price tag.

Forbes meldt dat Intel binnenkort een deel van zijn 6% grote aandeel in Micron gaat verkopen. De aandelen werd oorspronkelijk in 1998 gekocht als strategische investering om de toepassing en produktie van Rambus DRAMs te stimuleren. Dit plan pakte niet helemaal uit zoals Intel dat graag had gewild, aangezien Micron zich na het i820 fiasco op wierp tot één van de grootste supporters van het DDR platform. Begin dit jaar werd zelfs een in eigen huis ontwikkelde DDR northbridge gepresenteerd.

De investering in Micron heeft Intel overigens zeker geen windeieren gelegd. Toen de aandelen in oktober '98 werden gekocht waren zij 17 dollar waard. Inmiddels is de waarde na een 2-voor-1 split gestegen tot $93:

Intel has made a killing from its 20-month-old, half-billion dollar investment in Micron Technologies, but starting earlier this year, Intel has been steadily dissolving its 6% stake in the company. Last week it filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to sell an additional 2.4 million shares worth $209.3 million.

By any measure, Micron hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain. It has not been a big promoter of RDRAM, either in production or sales. The company has put much more emphasis on a cheaper memory alternative called Double Data Rate (DDR) memory.

News.com bericht dat Apple volgende week tijdens de Macworld Expo mogelijk nieuwe produktaankondiging zal doen. Het meest waarschijnlijk is een upgrade van de iMac lijn, waar sinds oktober van de vorige eeuw niets aan gewijzigd is. Er is hoop dat de voor deze zomer beloofde public beta van MacOS X op Macworld wordt gepresenteerd of dat er in ieder geval een release date bekend wordt gemaakt. De volgende borden worden besproken en met elkaar vergeleken: de Abit BE6-II & Abit BF6, Azza DIBX2+ & DIBX4, Asus CUBX, Epox EP-BX7, Gigabyte GA-6BX7+, Lucky Star 6ABX2C, MSI BX Master, QDI BrillianX 1S/2000 en de Soyo SY-6BA+ IV. It's practically impossible to spot a winner among those BX boards, as the differences regarding performance are minor, while all boards can be differentiated by lots of features. Asus, Epox, Gigabyte and MSI come with a bunch of functions and add-ons: Epox features an IDE-RAID controller, whereas the boards from Gigabyte and MSI have been equipped with a backup BIOS chip.

The best overclocking boards come from ABit, Asus, Epox and MSI. But the Asus actually has some trouble when overclocking the new Celeron at a higher voltage.

As you can see, every board has several pro and contra arguments. Highly equipped boards are of course clearly more expensive than plain ones. All candidates ran absolutely stable, which is still not commonplace today.

Planet X-Box heeft vernomen dat John Carmack deel uit zal maken van Microsoft's X-Box Technical Advisory Board. Of id Software ook games voor de Xbox gaat ontwikkelen is nog onduidelijk, maar het lijkt een logisch stap nu JC zich met de Xbox gaat bemoeien:

PlanetXbox has learned John Carmack of id Software will be on the Xbox technical advisory board. id Software has not announced plans at this time to develop games for the Xbox so one can only speculate on exactly what this means. John Carmack is a great person to have on any technical advisory board due to the extensive amount of knowledge he can share on the subject. John will most likely be utilizing the knowledge he possesses to help Microsoft make technical decisions on the Xbox hardware. One can not help but think he would not be participating unless he was indeed interested in creating games for the Xbox. Could we be seeing the next DOOM on Xbox? No one outside of Microsoft and id Software knows; only time will tell.

Lockheed Martin is working on the design of the new US CVN 77 aircraft carrier, and Microsoft Federal Systems is to co-operate in the ship's information technology architecture. This will, we kid you not, be based on Windows 2000. Microsoft Consulting Services will meanwhile chip in with tech support during the ship's software design, development and deployment.

Lockheed Martin's Warfare Systems Team is apparently a part of the company's Naval Electronics & Surveillance Unit, so we fear Larry Ellison had better watch out - Microsoft has some spooky-sounding new friends, and they have the firepower to take out a lot more than the trash.

Tillmann Steinbrecher, de heatsink reviewer van AnandTech en bekend van de Heatsink Guide, heeft een Socket 370 cooler roundup in mekaar geknutseld. In het artikel worden een aantal heatsinks van Alpha, Global Win, ThermalTake, RDJD en Intel vergeleken. De Alpha's komen als beste uit de test, met de Global Win FKP32 en ThermalTake Golden Orb op de tweede plaats als het budget een rol speelt. Afgezien van de RDJD coolers presteerden alle coolers beduidend beter dan de standaard Intel 'Boxed' heatsink:

The hardcore overclocker who wants maximum performance should go with Alpha. For motherboards with a socket, the FC-PAL6035 is the better choice (it is also cheaper than the PEP66). For slotket configurations the PEP66 is better, since it is less likely to block more than one DIMM slot. Alpha ships the heatsinks with Sanyo Denki fans, but many retailers ship them with YS Tech fans instead. In our opinion, the slightly better performance (0.5°C in our test) doesn't necessarily justify the much higher noise level of the YS Tech fans, so our recommendation is rather to go with the Sanyo Denki version. The disadvantage of the Alphas, as usual, is the high price.

The budget-conscious overclocker can chose between the Global WIN FKP32 and the Thermaltake Aircooler ("Golden Orb"). The FKP32 will provide better cooling, but it is louder than the Golden Orb. The Golden Orb is a good choice for anybody who wants above-average performance at a bearable noise level. Also, thanks to its compact design, it doesn't block any DIMM slots when used on a slotket.

Info World meldt dat IBM waarschijnlijk eind dit jaar een high-end quad SXGA LCD display op de markt brengt. De monitor heeft een resolutie van 2560 bij 2048 pixels. Omdat deze hoge resolutie op dit moment nog niet mogelijk is met één videokaart maakt het prototype gebruik van vier videokaarten. De prijs van het ding is naar verwachting niet minder dan 10.000 dollar:

A current prototype of the Roentgen monitor offers a resolution of 200ppi (pixels per inch), with a total of 5.2 million full-color pixels, laid out in a 2,560 by 2,048 grid. The prototype is 21 inches high and 16.5 inches wide. The display itself is 2.5 inches deep, although the base measurement is 9.5 inches. Once the production version of the monitor is released, Greier said it will be able to display two full-sized 8.5-inch by 11-inch documents side by side.

Getting the prototype technology to work has not been easy, but according to Greier, the biggest challenge the IBM team faced was finding peripherals that could adequately support the powerful displays.

In addition, the IBM development team is still trying to improve upon the viewing angle of the monitor. The current prototype only has a narrow viewing angle, meaning that the display has to be viewed straight on, but Greier explained that the production model will feature a wide viewing angle, thanks to improvements in technology for in-plane switching.

Name Space heeft gisteren in een kort geding met cosmeticaconcern Estée Lauder een andere rechter geëist. De rechter in dit kort geding bleek dezelfde te zijn die donderdag 300 domeinnamen van Name Space terugpakte en een verbod legde op verdere registratie van domeinen door Name Space. Volgens Name Space is er sprake van een politiek spelletje en gebruikt de rechter de verkeerde uitgangspunten, door zich te baseren op het merkenrecht. Name Space meent dat dit niet van toepassing is op domeinnamen:

Of de rechtbank de eis van Name Space inwilligt, zal blijken als de zogenoemde wrakingskamer bijeenkomt, aldus de Amsterdamse rechtbank vrijdag. Deze kamer behandelt dergelijke verzoeken.

Name Space beschuldigt de rechter ervan 'politiek te bedrijven', zo lichtte Name Space-manager G. de Venter het verzoek toe. "De man baseert zich op het merkenrecht, omdat voor internet nog geen wetgeving is ontwikkeld. Een verkeerd uitgangspunt", stelt De Venter.

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 1e en heeft een kans van één op 30 om de sleutel te vinden!

Er is weer allerlei nieuws te melden over het SocketA overclocken. Ik zal proberen om alles wat er de laatste paar dagen bekend is geworden nog even op een rijtje te zetten.

Om op de SocketA processors de multiplier te veranderen zijn, net als voor de originele Athlon, twee dingen nodig: de FID[0:3] settings, en de BP_FID[0:3] settings. Op de originele Athlon (en de Slot A Thunderbird) zijn die allemaal terug te vinden op de 'Golden Fingers'. Bij de SocketA processoren zijn die er niet, maar er zijn wel 'Golden Bridges' (zie plaatje).

De FID settings zijn terug te vinden als de rij gouden bruggen 'L6'. De BP_FID settings kun je vinden in de rijen bruggen L3 en L4. Als je de verbindingen van die bruggen verandert, verander je ook de multiplier (is de theorie).

Een gast met een vage Xoom site heeft de diagrammetjes van de SocketA processor eens goed bestudeerd, en hij heeft ze wat duidelijker opgeschreven (zie voor details zijn site). Zijn site geeft voor zowel de FID als BP_FID settings niet alleen de tabelletjes, maar ook hoe ze zijn opgebouwd: Vier pinnetjes voor .5X, 1X, 2X, en 4X, allemaal bij elkaar optellen plus een vaste factor, en je hebt de multiplier.

De FID settings zijn simpel te veranderen, doordat ze ook op een aantal van de pinnen onder de processor staan, en dus door het moederbord veranderd kunnen worden. Deze pinnen staan ook genoemd in de datasheet van de processors, en kunnen waarschijnlijk niet zomaar losgekoppeld worden omdat ook de Northbridge ze gebruikt. Zie het eerste artikel van Tom Pabst over Duron overclocking voor de details. Uit de resultaten van Anandtech met Duron en Thunderbird overclocking zou je kunnen opmaken dat met deze gedocumenteerde pennen alleen onderklokt kan worden, en niet overklokt. Dit zou je bijvoorbeeld nodig hebben om een hogere bussnelheid te gebruiken zonder verder iets te overklokken, bijvoorbeeld als er straks moederborden komen die 266 MT/s aankunnen.

Om de multiplier echt te veranderen zul je dus zowel de FID als de BP_FID instelling moeten veranderen. Nu is er vandaag op de forums van Ace's Hardware een bericht verschenen van de eerder genoemde vage Xoom gast, die vertelt dat hij voor BP_FID ongedocumenteerde pennen gevonden heeft onder zijn processor. Als dat waar blijkt te zijn, en AMD haalt die verbinding niet weg, kunnen we straks via het moederbord of een tussenzet-adapter waarschijnlijk met de multiplier gaan overklokken. Als dat niet zo blijkt te zijn, moeten we aan de gang met minuscule vijltjes en mesjes om aan de gouden bruggen te kunnen tweaken. QDI heeft beloofd dat zijn KinetiZ 7T moederbord voor de SocketA via een aantal "ongedocumenteerde" pinnetjes het multiplier slot zou kunnen breken. Of ze daarmee bedoelen dat ze de ongedocumenteerde BP_FID pinnetjes kunnen veranderen of alleen de semi-gedocumenteerde FID pinnen zoals de meeste andere moederplanken die zeggen het multiplier slot te breken, is nu nog de brandende vraag.

In m'n mailbox vond ik vanavond een persbericht van het beroemde Jet Propulsion Lab. Het blijkt dat ze daar al een paar jaar bezig zijn met 2 volledig geautomatiseerde 1.3 meter telescopen (die bouw je niet zomaar zelf even..) de volledige sterrenhemel in kaart te brengen. Het bijzondere is dat ze het deze keer in het infrarood doen, en bovendien dat alle data op het internet gezet wordt. In 2001 hopen ze klaar te zijn met observeren, en in 2003 zal alles ook echt op het net staan.

"The general public can see a menagerie of objects in infrared wavelengths that they couldn't see in any other way," said project scientist Dr. Roc Cutri. The 1.9 million images would fill 6,000 CD-ROMs, equivalent to 4,000 gigabytes or four terabytes of computer hard disk space.

The images were gathered by the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), the most thorough census of stars ever made. The survey detects infrared wavelengths that are beyond the red light in the rainbow of visible colors. Infrared light penetrates the gas and dust in our galaxy and is particularly effective for detecting the heat of very cool objects not visible with optical telescopes.

In order to cover the entire sky, the 2MASS survey uses two highly automated, 51-inch (1.3-meter) diameter telescopes, one at Mount Hopkins, Ariz., the other at the National Science Foundation's Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile.

Operations for 2MASS began in 1997. Its catalogs will contain more than 300 million objects by the time observations are concluded in 2001. Final processing of the data and release to the public will be complete by 2003.

"The current release is based on a volume of data several hundred times larger than that contained in the human genome," said Skrutskie. "Astronomers will become cosmic geneticists, searching out patterns in these sky maps to decode the structure and origin of the Milky Way and the surrounding nearby Universe."
