[CoSD]Headbanger schrijft dat wij Tweakers niet langer hoeven te zoeken naar een nieuwe computerkast. Het enige wat je moet doen voor de ultieme kast is richting deze pagina op Chick's Hardware te fietsen en de knutselkit pakken.
[CoSD]Headbanger heeft gehoord dat deze kast het beste gemaakt kan worden van AT koetjes, dus laten wij die in een moordend tempo gaan slachten :

I'm not willing to call it a "finished product" quite yet: as well as some additional touching up to do, I'm still planning on incorporating slot-loading drives into it and covering up the remains of the front panel more thoroughly. The entire back is obviously open, and I'm also going to invest in some more cooling hardware to bring the system and CPU temperatures down to more acceptable levels. I'm also considering adding a "tail" to blow around in the PSU exhaust stream, and perhaps big beady eyes in front. Someone suggested spraying a CD tray red too, to act as a tongue. Call me paranoid, but I declined to act on the latter suggestion, on the grounds that people at DMs might start feeding it things ("warning! tray jam. remove grass and try again").

As of this article, I haven't taken the case to any major public events yet. Despite what some people who've seen the pictures say, though, I think it's pretty sweet. It'll hardly make me any new friends, but I'm hoping for a favourable reaction from the nerd community. And failing that, at least it makes a better foot rest than a plain old beige box...

De Cow-Case (Een must voor elke DPC'er!)

The Register meldt dat beta testers toegang hebben gekregen tot de eerste preview versie van Whistler, de opvolger van Windows 2000. De preview versie is voorzien van een feature genaamd 'Visual Styles', waarmee de vormgeving van de Windows interface op Windowblinds-achtige wijze gecustomized kan worden. De Whistler preview edition is beschikbaar in een Professional versie voor de zakelijke markt en een Personal versie voor de consumer markt. Het is de bedoeling dat Whistler Personal een einde maakt aan het Win9x tijdperk:

Microsoft has given beta testers access to the first preview edition of Whistler, the next version of Win2k. Designated build 2250, the software is available at a private download site, and according to Paul Thurrott of WinInfo, includes the first version of a skinning feature called Visual Styles, which will allow the UI to be tailored.

The preview edition comes in two flavours, Whistler Personal and Whistler Professional. The software, although expected at base to be a relatively minor rev of Win2k, is intended to finally converge Microsoft's codebase for business and consumer, so Professional is aimed at business, Personal at consumer.

*Discostar* kwam langsfietsen met een link richting deze bijzonder vage Japanse site, waar iemand een stel multiplier en voltage dipswitches op z'n FIC AZ-11 heeft geknutseld. Dankzij deze operatie kon een Duron 600 tot 900MHz overgeklokt worden. Of onze Japanse vriend ook de multiplier heeft weten te unlocken (of dat de processor in kwestie geen multiplier-lock had), is mij niet duidelijk.

For FID and VID signal, cut curcuit between motherboard and SocketA .
And connect switch (GND or Open) for motherboard side circuit.
For each BP_FID signal, connect switch (2.0V or GND). On AZ11 mainboard, curcuit pattern "OVERRIDE" is connected to BP_FID. So I set jumper switch in this area.

Configulation for these signal is described in AMD datasheet.

Bovendien heeft M. Kara de moeite genomen om ons te voorzien van een vertaling van de vage Japanse site. Erg brak engels, maar er is meer van te lezen dan het Japans (voor mij in ieder geval).

James Yu van Thresh's Firingsquad heeft een GeForce2 naar de martelkamer gedragen en voerde daar enkele gruwelijke overclocking experimenten uit, waarbij de core clock werd verhoogd naar 240MHz en de memory clock tot 363MHz wordt opgekrikt. Wat blijkt: de 200/363MHz setting blijkt in vrijwel alle benchmarks sneller te zijn dan de 240/363MHz setting. Echt logisch lijkt het niet, maar het geeft in ieder geval aan dat de GeForce2 een zware memory bottleneck heeft. Dit is ook duidelijk te zien in de framerates, die lineair stijgen met de geheugen snelheid:

[CoSD]Headbanger bracht ons een linkje naar VR Zone, waar iemand zijn Slot A Thunderbird 700 open heeft gesloopt en tot de ontdekking kwam dat er onder de motorkap een 950MHz core schuil ging. Eerder werden al Thunderbird 750's met 900MHz core ontdekt:

iXBT Labs schrijft dat Chaintech de 7AIV2 moederplank met KT133 chipset en onboard TNT2 M64 videochippie heeft aangekondigd. Het plankje heeft 2 DIMM slots en een MicroATX layout:

Chaintech has offered an interesting highly integrated mainboard for SocketA processors. Instead of using VIA KM133 chipset with integrated Savage4 graphics the company put nVIDIA TNT2 M64 on its 7AIV2 board. 7AIV2 board is designed in micro ATX form factor, features 2 DIMM slots for up to 512 MB of memory, 4 PCI slots, 1 optional LTI slot. Besides, the board has an integrated audio features - CMedia 8738 audio chip. Originally 7AIV2 has ATA66 support but as an option it can support ATA100 with 686B chip

Verder meldt iXBT dat Chaintech twee ATA66 en ATA100 RAID controllers heeft aangekondigd. Deze kaarten zijn gebaseerd op de veelgebruikte HPT368 en HPT370 controllers van HighPoint.

PlanetHardware heeft een zeer heftige round-up gemaakt tussen 5 videokaarten, te weten: de Diamond Monster 3D, STB Velocity 128, Diamond Stealth II S220, Matrox Millennium G200 en de Quantum3D SB100-4440. Uit deze round-up kunnen we een drie dingen concluderen: de Matrox G200 is snel (relatief dan...), je mag blij zijn als je een nieuwe videokaart bezit en 3dfx heeft al een lange geschiedenis met lange kaarten, zie de foto hieronder van een dual voodoo1 kaartje :

Such was the origin for the article you see before you today, curiosity over how far the relatively young Video Accelerator market has come in the past few years combined with the nostalgic pangs of a staff that remembers when 3D cards were an event, not a mandatory ingredient in a killer PC.

We managed to assemble five cards that we felt best represented the majority of gamer's first experiences with 3D acceleration, including the Diamond Monster 3D (3dfx Voodoo1 4MB), the STB Velocity 128 (NVIDIA NV3 - Riva 128 4MB), the Diamond Stealth II S220 (Rendition V2200 4MB), the Matrox Millennium G200 (G200 8MB), and an extremely expensive and rare Quantum3D SB100-4440 card (3dfx Voodoo1 SLI 12MB).

Acer Labs heeft de aankondiging van hun M1647 Athlon chipset met DDR support uitgesteld. Oorspronkelijk was het de bedoeling dat deze chipset komende week tijdens de Platform 2000 conferentie gepresenteerd zou worden, maar dit wordt nu met een paar weken gedelayed - waarschijnlijk tot 1 augustus. ALi heeft nog geen werkend silicon en wil niet afwijken van hun gebruikelijke policy om geen aankondiging te doen zolang er niets gedemonstreerd kan worden:

ALI's habit has been to announce products only when silicon is in hand, said Nancy Hartsoch, who serves as a vice-president of marketing and sales as well as and chief operating officer for ALI in San Jose.

"I talked with our president, and we decided we didn't want to change the way we do things just for a [trade] show," she said. "But everything looks good."

Vorige maand werd op Computex al wel een niet werkend knutsel exemplaar van de Iwill KA266-R moederplank met M1647 chipset geshowed. Iwill lijkt vooralsnog de enige fabrikant die deze chipset op desktop mobo's gaat gebruiken:

Ik kwam bij Kyle's HardOCP twee pics tegen van deze brute Molex FC-PGA Radial Fin heatsink/fan, die ik nog niet eerder elders ben tegengekomen. Als we Molex mogen geloven koelt dit ding erg goed. Omdat de heatsink een groter oppervlak heeft dan normale heatsinks kan er met minder airflow - dus minder herrie - hetzelfde koeleffect bereikt worden:

Krijgertje schrijft dat een Intel medewerker heeft gereageerd op de benchmark resultaten die Intel vorige week op haar website publiceerde, benchmarks waarin SDRAM sneller uit de testen kwam dan RDRAM. Dit zijn natuurlijk vreemde resultaten voor een bedrijf wat fanatiek RDRAM promoot, en Intel heeft ook al een antwoord bedacht. Volgens Intel zijn de resultaten inderdaad goed, alleen alle benchmark programma's (dat zijn er een stuk op 15...) testen op een verkeerde manier, en laten de ware snelheid van RDRAM niet zien:

"The benchmarks used don't reflect a real-world situation - say where you'd have Word and Excel running concurrently," commented the Intel spinmeister with a commendably straight face.

"Today's benchmarks run their tests consecutively, which doesn't give Rambus a chance to show how well it performs when there's a lot of heavy memory usage.

"We're working with the major benchmarking organisations to develop more realistic test methodologies which will show the kind of performance of which Rambus is capable."

Mike Andrawes van AnandTech heeft een review van de Gigabyte GA-7ZX Socket A moederplank met VIA KT133 chipset in mekaar geknutseld. Dit plankje heeft 5 PCI slots, 3 DIMM slots en een AMR en ISA slot. De plank geeft niet de mogelijkheid om de multiplier naar eigen inzicht bij te tweaken. Extra busspeeds (95 / 100 / 105 / 110 / 113 / 115 / 117 / 133MHz) zijn wel aanwezig, maar kunnen uitsluitend via barbaarse jumpertjes ingesteld worden. De prestaties van de GA-7ZX bleven iets achter bij de FIC AZ-11. Al met al is dit nogal een kaal bord en blijft het verstandiger om met het kopen van een KT133 moederplank te wachten tot de betere borden van Asus, Abit, MSI e.a. op de markt komen:

We've yet to see any KT133 boards available with the ability to unlock the multiplier of AMD's Socket-A CPU's, but if such a feature does come to market, it will be sorely missed on the GA-7ZX by all overclockers. So far, the possibility of unlocking the Thunderbird and Duron is looking gloomy, but we're still holding out hope that someone will figure it out.

Also along the lines of overclocking, we'd like to see a jumperless CPU setup from Gigabyte with more bus speeds and the ability to tweak the CPU's core voltage. These features have proven to be quite useful for overclockers everywhere.

The second biggest complaint with the GA-7ZM, which is relatively minor overall, is the fact that Gigabyte continues to not include the header required to take advantage of the second set of USB ports.
