Bij Gamers Depot staat een review van de Iiyama Pro Lite 46C, een erg relaxte 18,1" LCD monitor. De conclusie is weer standaard; het beeld is superstrak maar blijft ongeschikt voor snelle first person shooters:

This would be a good monitor for real-time strategy games, or games like Diablo, but if you like it up close and personal when gaming, forget this monitor or any other LCD monitor. Until a flat-panel technology is developed that offers the same response time as a CRT, I can’t recommend any LCD-based display for first-person shooters. I’m probably spoiled, but I guess my eyes are used to the high scan rates afforded by a 32MB Geforce2 GTS card and a high-end monitor.

I want to love this monitor, and I do in many respects, as it has made working a joy this week, and I love the way it looks on my desk. But, this is a gaming-oriented page, and it couldn’t pass the test. Not that this is anyone’s fault, it’s just the nature of the beast.

Het blad Computer Idee beschrijft in hun nieuwste uitgave hoe je in 5 stappen gecodeerde zenders zoals Canal+ kunt ontvangen via je TV-kaart. De zender was hier uiteraard niet zo blij mee en heeft al een kort geding aangespannen tegen uitgeverij VNU om alle exemplaren uit de winkels te halen. Hier een stuk uit dit bericht van Nu.nl:

Computer Idee beschrijft in de uitgave van deze week hoe mensen met een paar simpele ingrepen op hun computerscherm naar gecodeerde betaalzenders kunnen kijken.

In vijf stappen verandert bijvoorbeeld het gecodeerde, 'verminkte' beeld van Canal+ in een glashelder beeld.

"Daarmee maakt Computer Idee zich schuldig aan telefoonfraude. Het is niet toegestaan om openbaar te maken op welke wijze een betaalzender kan worden gedecodeerd", zegt een woordvoerder van Canal+.

[...] Hoofdredacteur Sjoerd 't Riet vindt niet dat zijn blad aanzet tot misbruik. "Het enige dat wij doen is beschrijven wat er technisch allemaal mogelijk is en welke soft- en hardware voorhanden zijn. Daarbij waarschuwen we voor het downloaden van illegale programma's."

Bij Hardwareinfo.net is net een artikel online gemikt over het internetten via de satelliet met de provider Europe Online. Uit de test bleek dat de snelheid over het algemeen erg tegenviel (ongeveer 25kB/sec) en dat je nog steeds een flink bedrag kwijt bent aan abonnements-, hardware- en telefoonkosten. De conclusie luidt dus dat deze manier van surfen zeker niet aan te raden is:

Bezitters van een schotelantenne die denken met 600 gulden investeren klaar te zijn, komen bedrogen uit: voor het abonnement bij EOL moet 30 gulden per maand (zonder dat EOL de ISP is) betaald worden en u houdt de gewone telefoontikken! Het moge duidelijk zijn dat wij de magere prestaties het geld zeker niet waard vinden!

Van Internet Access Nederland vernamen we dat de directeur van EOL vanwege het niet behalen van de gestelde downloadsnelheden uit zijn functie is gezet. De nieuwe directeur van EOL zijn functie heeft waargenomen. Deze heeft als prioriteit heeft de gestelde snelheden (2 Mbit/s voor multicast en 400 kbit/s voor unicast) waar te maken.

Als u op het moment geen beschikking heeft over kabelinternet of ADSL, dan is het dus aan te raden om te wachten met investeren in sneller internet via de satelliet. Alleen als de downloadsnelheden verbeteren en de telefoontikken verdwijnen is deze mogelijkheid aantrekkelijk te noemen.

Gisteren stond DPC weer op nummer 2, een heel eind onder AnandTech. Maar, OGR is gisteren weer begonnen waardoor zij waarschijnlijk een behoorlijk wat lagere keyrate zullen krijgen bij RC5, zoals dat ook bij CSC (keyrate gehalveerd!) en bij de vorige OGR poging het geval was.

LoCaL bracht ons een linkje richting dit artikel van HardOCP over de 200MHz EV6 bus van de Athlon, waarvan sommigen nog steeds weigeren te begrijpen dat 100MHz DDR hetzelfde is als 200MHz datarate . De EV6 bus verstuurt z'n data op de stijgende en dalende flank van de klokcyclus. In principe heb je dan dezelfde theoretische bandbreedte van een 200MHz bus, alleen met de latency van een 100MHz bus:

Onze Hollandse trots ASM Lithography heeft aangekondigd dat het met negen grote chipfabrikanten een consortium hebben gevormd voor de ontwikkeling van 157nm lithografie apparatuur. In het clubje bevinden zich grote namen zoals AMD, Infineon, Motorola, TSMC en STMicroelectronics:

VELDHOVEN, The Netherlands, July 13, 2000 – Nine leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers have joined ASML’s industry-wide 157nm lithography technology program, which the lithography equipment leader launched 11 months ago. Advanced Micro Devices, Infineon, Motorola, Philips, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), ST Microelectronics and three other top ten IC manufacturers have joined ASML and its strategic technology partners, including Carl Zeiss, in the program to extend imaging capabilities and deliver 157nm lithography systems for advanced IC manufacturing by 2003.

ASML is spearheading the effort to create a 300mm-capable, 157nm scanning system that will exceed the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors’ requirements for the 70nm technology node and possibly beyond. Several industry organizations including International Sematech have cited 157nm lithography as an important candidate for printing semiconductor circuit linewidths at the 70nm technology node and below.

"157nm optical lithography is the key enabler for extending Moore's Law into the next decade—and beyond,” commented Jay Deahna, semiconductor equipment analyst with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. “This program, bringing together a blue chip group of chipmakers to develop 157nm processes, supports our thesis that ASML is increasingly being viewed as the premier supplier of advanced photolithographic technology."

The program consists of two parts. The first part relates to a 157nm exposure system, and allows IC makers to receive early 157nm imaging tools. Quarterly technical reviews enable the participating companies to give input on system design, program execution and prioritization of the program’s overall efforts. The resulting equipment is currently scheduled to begin shipping to program members by the end of 2003.

The second part of the program focuses on developing the infrastructure for 157nm lithography, including photoresists, reticles and processes. This work will use a prototype "mini-stepper" installed in Leuven, Belgium, at IMEC, a leading independent research center for state-of-the-art microelectronic technologies. Participants in this part of the program have access to the process data and experience that is generated, gain first access to integrated process knowledge for pilot production, and acquire experience with 157nm infrastructure elements ranging from reticle handling to optical enhancement techniques such as optical proximity correction and phase shift masks.

"Last July, we began to actively solicit investments of technical resources and participation from all parties that have a role in continuing to shrink the design rules of advanced semiconductor devices,” said Martin van den Brink, executive vice president of marketing & technology at ASML. "Our objective of creating a whole product solution for 157nm lithography will require highly accelerated development work in processes, equipment and materials. As the program's membership attests, this is a global, industry-wide effort to ensure a fast ramp up of 157nm technology."

In addition to this industry-wide program, ASML is also involved in another European research activity in 157nm lithography, which was recently approved by the board of directors of MEDEA (Micro-Electronics Development for European Applications). Participants in this group effort include companies from Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

Uit een poll van Semiconductor Business News is gebleken dat de vraag naar DDR testapparatuur nu al de vraag naar Rambus testers overstijgt. Bij Teradyne Inc., fabrikant van de Aeries memory tester, gaat 't bij bijna 80% van de orders om DDR apparatuur. De fabrikanten verwachten dat de vraag naar Rambus testers aan dit jaar zal toenemen wanneer de Pentium 4 wordt gereleased:

The early precinct polls from tester vendors are now in on the battle between double data rate (DDR) SDRAMs and Direct Rambus memories. The clear winner so far is DDR, according to test suppliers showing their wears at the Semicon West Trade show here this week.

[...] Agreeing is Tom Pritchett, Agilent Technologies Inc.'s group marketing manager for automatic test equipment. "High-speed Rambus systems haven't taken off as we had hoped," he said.

[...] Tester firms are counting on their Rambus projections to materialize, after making large investments themselves in developing the complex high-speed testers and boost throughput to 32 to 64 simultaneous test sites. In the meantime, vendors here said they are finding other uses for the high-speed testers developed for Rambus, while they wait on that market to develop.

IBM heeft bekend gemaakt dat hun Deskstar 75GXP en 40GV IDE drives een updatetje hebben gekregen naar de nieuwe ATA100 spec. De drives hebben een capaciteit van 15 tot 75GB voor de 7200rpm versies en 20 tot 40GB voor de 5400rpm serie. De snelle spin-up tijden voldoen aan de Microsoft Drive Ready richtlijnen:

IBM's recently launched Deskstar disk drives offer the world a performance boost to all ATA and IDE interface applications, including the new ATA/100. The IBM Deskstar 75GXP and 40GV drives burst data to the host at up to 100 Megabytes per second. These Deskstar products feature multiple benefits to all ATA interface application requiring high capacity, high performance drives.

``The IBM 75 GB Deskstar remains the highest capacity disk drive in the entire hard drive market since its introduction in March,'' said Shiv Shivaji, program director of IBM's Desktop Marketing Division.

The ATA 100 Deskstar provides the industry's highest non-operational shock protection -- 400 G for the two-disk 5400 rpm model and 350 G for the three-disk, 7200 rpm model. Ramp load/unload of the heads and the use of glass disks enable these new levels of durability.

Several enhancements have reduced idle acoustics to an industry-leading 3.1 bels for the 45 GB 7200 rpm. The drives complement the system goal of reducing power, with the two-disk 5400 rpm model at only 4.9 W and the three disk 7200 rpm model requiring only 6.7 W (idle). The Deskstar disk drives meet the spin-up times of the Microsoft Drive Ready campaign despite its low acoustics and low power requirements.

The IBM Deskstars can be configured to further reduce both acoustics and power, for special system applications. These special modes reduce the specifications for the 45 GB 7200 rpm model to 3 bels seeking and less than 3 W in idle mode. The 40 GB 5400 rpm specifications drop to 3.1 bels seeking and less than 3 W in idle mode. These are all industry-leading levels of achievement.

All major PC manufacturers have qualified these IBM drives and have started shipping all models, ranging in capacity from 75 to 15 GB at 7200 rpm and from 40 to 20 GB at 5400 rpm. IBM has been shipping these Deskstar drives to original equipment manufacturers and distributors since April, 2000.

AnandTech heeft een review gepost van de MSI 694D Pro dual PIII moederplank met VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. In tegenstelling tot de GamePC review van gisteren werd de 694D Pro door Anand als zeer stabiel bevonden. De performance bleef iets achter bij de i820 en i840 met Rambus, maar het verschil is te minimaal om de hoge prijs van Rambus RIMMs te rechtvaardigen voor de i8x0 setup:

We were extremely impressed with Microstar's 694D Pro, and if more motherboard manufacturers can put VIA's 133A into a solid dual processor motherboard design, VIA may just have created a brand new market for motherboard manufacturers.

Performance-wise a dual 133A board obviously isn't going to be as fast as the i840 but at the same time it's not going to be nearly as expensive as a dual 840 board.

From a price to performance standpoint, the 133A chipset makes quite a bit of sense to be included in entry level dual processor workstations, however since the chipset isn't quite as mature as the older BX/GX chipsets, we wouldn't suggest trying to build a mission critical server around it.

[break]Op zich is dat logisch...hoewel sommige Intel-voormannen in het verleden andere uitspraken hebben gedaan zal geen enkele chipfabrikant echt enthousiast zijn over overklokken. Voor elke getweakte goedkope processor verkoop je een duurdere minder. Bovendien is er het gevaar van "remarking" (het verkopen van een opgevoerde goedkope CPU als een duurdere snelle), waar AMD nu al veel last van heeft, vooral in Australië. Aan de andere kant, Tweakers en aanverwant volk laten de fabrikant wel zien waar de zwakke en sterke punten van zijn product liggen. AMD wil zich meer als een betrouwbare partner voor bedrijven neerzetten in plaats van als een fabrikant voor die-hard overklokkers. Logisch, want daar valt het geld te halen, maar voor de Tweaker erg jammer:[/break] In essence, AMD is trying to establish itself as a credible alternative to Intel in the corporate space. The side effect of firming up its reliability figures and market position is that the high esteem it has been held in by the overclocking community may well atrophy.

In mijn mailbox vond ik het bericht dat Jasper van Via Hardware een review van de MSI K7T Pro heeft geschreven. Dit Socket A moederbord heeft de laatste dagen voor wat discussie gezorgd: heeft het ding nu wel of geen multiplier unlocking en zo ja, heb je er ook wat aan? Het antwoord is deze keer duidelijk: 2 x nee:

Recently there has been a lot of hype around the possibility of the AMD Duron and T-Bird Athlons having unlocked multipliers. Having a motherboard that supported multiplier adjustment would mean potentially great overclocking. I am sorry to say the MSI K7T does not have multiplier adjustment. But with recent news from AMD claiming the multipliers will be locked and reports that motherboards will be shipping without multiplier adjustment this could become a moot point. Anandtech.com also found that, even with manipulation of the motherboard to change the multiplier, multipliers above factory default were not functional. [break]Hoewel er nauwelijks over te klokken viel (105 MHz FSB was de hoogste stabiele setting) is men toch wel redelijk tevreden over het bord:[/break] Although there are many other Socket A motherboards yet to hit the market, we feel if you are purchasing a Socket A Duron or Athlon in the near future, the MSI K7T would make a great platform. It offers the stability and features we have come to love from MSI as well as some decent overclocking options. [break]Verder zag ik ook dat het tweede deel van de VIA-based computer Guide online is gezet. Dit deel gaat in op de keuze van een goed moederbord met een VIA-chipset. Momenteel wordt Windows.NET 1.0 (codenaam Whistler) door beta-testers getest. Microsoft Whistler 1.0 zal in de tweede helft van 2001 in de winkels moeten liggen. Windows.NET 2.0 (codenaam Blackcomb) moet een jaar na versie 1.0 in de winkels liggen. In beide versies zal IE weer geintegreerd zijn, meldt Microsoft."

Microsoft Corporation posts its first beta release of Windows.NET 1.0 codenamed "Whistler" for its technical beta testers. Whistler build 2250, which closely resembles Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium Edition ("Windows Me") is the first public release of Whistler. Whistler is Microsoft's initial client and server platform for its Dot NET strategy. From the roadmap, Whistler will be available in H2' 2001.

A next generation release of Windows.NET 2.0 code-named "Blackcomb" will use the Dot NET "user experience," Microsoft says that Whistler will stick with the tried and true Explorer user interface and not offer a complete "activity center" experience as previously expected. However, Microsoft says that Internet Explorer (IE) will become even more integrated in Whistler. From the roadmap, Whistler will be available in H2' 2002.

Natuurlijk waren er nog wel chirurgen bij om het apparaat te bedienen, maar die hoefden de persoon met geen vinger aan te raken. Via een joystick haalden de doctoren de galblaas van de patiënt er zonder problemen uit:

A woman's gall bladder was removed by a robot today in the first operation in the United States performed by the newly approved da Vinci Surgical System.

The da Vinci, approved for use at five hospitals on Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration, enables surgeons to operate by manipulating joysticks at a computer terminal. Lenses inserted in the patient's body give the surgeon a 3-D view of the person's insides.

"I was very pleased," said Dr. Kelley, who had been trained on the da Vinci but had used it to operate only on pigs and cadavers before. "I think it went very smoothly."
