We have finally seen the ThermoEngine lose its dominance. Not only did the Zalman and Thermalright SK6 coolers fare "much" better than the ThermoEngine, we even saw the all-copper Vantec pull up even with the ThermoEngine this time round. Since these HSF competitions have been getting closer and closer in the past months, I have to say the SK6 and the Zalman surprised me a bit with their prominent lead over our once top end HSFs. There is just so much that can be done with air cooling when it comes to CPUs, but the Zalman 5000 and Thermalright SK6 have pulled a trick out of their hat.
With those two pulling out in front, they have really broken the "high-performance HSF" category into two segments. They are no longer all grouped together. One thing that can be said for ALL of these coolers, if they use a 7K RPM fan, is that THEY ARE LOUD. Do not think you are going to walk away with an active cooler that uses air flow as its primary way of cooling and it not be loud. It is simply a price you will have to pay. So either get used to the noise, get some earplugs for everyone in the house, or go H2O.
[...] Time for an award? Uh...not this time round. There is certainly an entire field of good HSFs here. In fact, I think it is hard to go wrong with any of the performance coolers we have discussed here. The competition has simply gotten to be incredible and cannot simply be measured in terms of degrees anymore. Many of these HSFs have their own special merits and most are only divided by a few degrees when it comes to true performance. It comes down to what is important to you. Willing to sacrifice 4 degrees for something that looks 100% better or vice versa? I totally understand. I will say this though, we would have given the Zalman Radial Fin unit an award, but the noise issue with the 7K fan was a bit much. Still, I will probably put it in my own box and see just how bad it really is!
