Bij Electic Tech is te lezen dat IBM een nieuwe generatie van de Travelstar schijven voor notebooks heeft geïntroduceerd. De nieuwe serie bestaat uit de 15GN (6, 10 en 15GB), 30GN (20 en 30GB) en het topmodel de 48GN (48GB). Al deze disks draaien rond met 5400 rondjes per minuut, wat weer een stuk sneller is dan de 4200rpm die werd gehaald door de eerdere modellen. Dat zorgt weer voor kortere toegangstijden en hogere doorvoorsnelheden. Ook nieuw is het "Drive Noise Suppression System", dat ervoor moet zorgen dat de schijf minder herrie maakt tijdens het lezen en schrijven dan zijn voorgangers in hun vrije tijd:

In de tekst bepreekt men de features, layout en overklokmogelijkheden van het bord. Daarna gaat met over naar de benchmarks. In een groot aantal verschillende programma's wordt het moederbord vergeleken met het AMD Corona reference design, Iwill's KA266-R (ALi chipset) en de welbekende Asus A7V met SDRAM. De reviewers zijn erg tevreden met het bord, het was namelijk erg stabiel en betrouwbaar, niet minder snel dan andere borden en bovendien relatief goedkoop. Bij AnandTech heeft men een review geschreven over het dual Socket370 moederbord van Iwill. Dit plankje heet de DVD266-R en is gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. Zoals je weet ondersteunt deze zowel normaal als DDR SDRAM, maar de ontwerpers hebben in dit geval alleen voor het laatste gekozen. Aangezien dit het eerste dual moederbord met deze chipset is er alleen de MSI 694D Pro (Apollo Pro133A chipset) om mee te vergelijken. Het DDR geheugen bleek in dit geval rond de 5% extra performance te geven. Deze minimale verbetering, gecombineerd met de ietwat onhandige layout en hoge prijs maken dit bord niet tot een aanrader, zeker niet als je bedenkt dat er waarschijnlijk nog een flink aantal andere borden met dezelfde features uitkomen:

Iwill jumped out to be the first manufacturer to send us a dual Socket-370 motherboard using the Apollo Pro266 chipset, but we are not overly impressed. Although it brings us some decent performance numbers, there is still quite a bit of room for improvement, as we have seen in the synthetic benchmark tests.

NEC heeft een press release online gegooid waarin ze een nieuw plasmascherm aankondigen. Dit scherm heeft het goddelijke formaat van 61 inches (dat is 155cm, oftewel ruim 1,5m ). Het scherm kan een resolutie aan van 1365x786 pixels met een pixel pitch van ongeveer 0,99mm. De PlasmaSync 61 MP1 heeft verder als handige features een hoog contrast en een lage energieconsumptie. De monitor zal in het derde kwartaal van dit jaar geïntroduceerd worden voor waarschijnlijk een helse prijs:

Een woordvoerder van Intel heeft tegenover ZDNet nogmaals benadrukt dat het VIA in de ogen van Intel niet is toegestaan om een chipset voor de Pentium 4 op de markt te brengen. VIA meent deze rechten te hebben verkregen via de cross-licensing deals die bij de overnames van S3 en Cyrix werden binnengehaald. Intel is op zijn beurt van mening dat de benodigde rechten om een chipset voor de Pentium 4 bus te produceren geen deel uitmaken van deze overnames. Eerder kregen ATi, SiS en ALi wel toestemming van Intel om een P4 chipset op de markt te zetten.

VIA is vastberaden om een eigen P4 chipset op de markt te brengen, met of zonder officiële licentie van Intel. De ontwikkeling van deze Apollo PX266 chipset is reeds voltooid, maar vanwege de matige verkoopcijfers van de Pentium 4 maakt VIA geen haast met de introductie van de PX266:

Later this year, Via will market a DDR (Double Data Rate) based chip set for use with Intel's Pentium 4, either with or without Intel's blessing, a Via spokesman confirmed here Thursday at the CeBit show.

Webwereld meldt dat UPC heeft aangekondigd de prijzen van een Chello breedband abo per 1 mei met 10 gulden te verhogen naar 99 piek per maand. Chello wordt hiermee net zo duur als de goedkopere ADSL varianten. Volgens UPC is de prijsverhoging onvermijdelijk omdat het bedrijf de afgelopen tijd veel heeft geïnvesteerd in Chello. Handhaving van de huidige kwaliteit zou niet mogelijk zijn zonder de abonnementsprijs te verhogen. De prijsverhoging wordt vandaag of morgen in een brief aan de Chello abonnees bekend gemaakt:

Volgens UPC-woordvoerder Joe Simmons is het voor het eerst sinds drie jaar dat er een prijsverhoging wordt doorgevoerd. "Wij vinden 99 gulden een reële prijs voor het geboden product. Ook als je het vergelijkt met ADSL-diensten, waarmee wij concurreren", zo zegt Simmons.

Verder bestaan er twijfels of UPC de voorgestelde deadline van 1 mei voor de invoering van een traffic meetsysteem zal halen. Een UPC woordvoerder kon niet aangeven wanneer het systeem in gebruik genomen zal worden (thanks Jotti voor de tip).

Ik ken wel 3.376.122 redenen om hier te schrijven dat we vandaag een mooie score hebben. Daarbovenop komen nog 1.163.939 redenen die de score naar het niveau "goed" zouden kunnen tillen. Diverse nieuwsbronnen melden dat een aardbeving in Hiroshima de Japanse DRAM fabriek van NEC heeft getroffen. Deze fabriek produceert geheugen voor Elpida Memory, een joint venture tussen NEC en Hitachi. Volgens Dean Kent van Real World Technologies staat de 128Mb lijn voor mogelijk 10 dagen buiten productie. Als gevolg hiervan zijn de 128Mb prijzen licht gestegen van 4,50 naar 5 dollar.

The earthquake that hit Japan over the weekend appears to have affected the Elpida fab in Hiroshima. Early reports indicate that the 128Mb line is down, possibly for up to 10 days. Spot market prices have jumped a bit to reflect this, as they are now hovering at around $5, up from $4.50 earlier. It is not clear what percentage of Elpida's SDRAM production is in this fab vs. the Singapore fab.

ZDNet schrijft dat Intel eind 2002 met de Banias processor zal komen. Deze processor is de eerste van Intel die speciaal ontworpen is voor gebruik in notebooks. Hiermee breekt Intel een lange traditie van het gebruiken van low voltage denktop CPU's voor het gebruik in notebooks. De Banias zal waarschijnlijk tegelijk met de mobiele Pentium 4 op de markt komen. Samen zullen deze twee CPU's de concurrentie aan moeten gaan met Transmeta en AMD op de mobiele markt:

Intel will try a new tactic to improve laptop battery life when it comes out next year with "Banias," its first chip designed from the ground up to power notebooks.

Banias, due out toward the end of 2002, is part of an increased focus on the laptop market by Intel and other chipmakers. Although desktop PC sales are limping, many manufacturers say that the worldwide market for mobile computers is faring somewhat better.

The upcoming chip, which sources say is code-named after an archaeological site in the Middle East, will differ from other Intel notebook chips in two fundamental ways.

First, the chip will contain more power conservation features than current notebook processors. Second, the chip will have a distinct architecture from Intel's desktop chips, with the addition of new features, said Frank Spindler, general manager of Intel's mobile product unit.
