Ace's Hardware heeft mooie grafiekjes gemaakt van de benchmarks van een Intel Itanium 667MHz, naar aanleiding van deze post in het mailarchief van de makers van ATLAS. De schrijver van die post vergelijkt de prestaties van de Intel Itanium 667MHz, Intel Pentium 4 1,5GHz en AMD Athlon 1GHz (met SDRAM) onder ATLAS, een programma voor lineaire algebraïsche berekeningen. Ace's Hardware heeft een diagram gemaakt van de resultaten in een double precision matmul benchmark. In deze test worden twee matrices met elkaar vermenigvuldigd.

Intel's nieuwe IA-64 architectuur zet dus zeker geen onredelijke prestaties neer. Volgens Paul DeMone, die zijn reactie geeft in deze thread op het forum van Ace's, geeft dit echter nog geen enkele garantie voor de performance van de Itanium in andere applicaties:

Given the machines are running Linux and the IA-64 compilers on Linux don't do serious EPIC specific optimizations yet (AFAIK) I presume these Atlas routines are hand code and optimized in IA-64 assembly language. Unfortunately that reduces the usefulness of these results to predict ultimate Merced performance on compiled programs such as the SPEC suite.

XElDiablo schrijft: "MS is van plan dit najaar Office voor MacOS X te releasen, wat erg snel is als je bedenkt dat Office 2001 voor de Mac pas in oktober vorig jaar werd uitgebracht. Analysten hadden al gewaarschuwd dat als er voor MacOS X geen speciale versie van Office of een vergelijkbare suite zou zijn, Mac OS X niet erg zou aanslaan bij bedrijven."

Er wordt ook gezegd dat door de beslissing van Microsoft om Office voor MacOS X zo snel uit te brengen er meer andere softwarehuizen zullen volgen. Dit is erg belangrijk voor Apple, aangezien de ontwikkelaars tot nu toe nog niet echt stonden te springen om applicaties voor MacOS X te ontwerpen:

Still, Microsoft's commitment to delivering Office for OS X is a huge win for Apple, particularly because software developers have not flocked to the new operating system as aggressively as the company had hoped, Technology Business Research analyst Tim Deal said. "This is a good development for Apple," Deal said. "It certainly helps promote Mac OS X. Becker concurred that Microsoft's full backing for Mac OS X sends an important message. "We've worked hard to partner with Apple, but the industry looks and asks, 'How does Microsoft view things? If they're on board with OS X, then things must be going well,'" she said. They look to us as an overall temperature check and gauge." Bij Tresh's Firingsquad is vandaag een review neergeplant over de Abit KT7A-RAID plank. De Abit KT7A-RAID verschilt met zijn voorganger qua northbridge en southbridge die respectievelijk de ondersteuning voor een 133MHz DDR FSB en ATA-100 toevoegen. Vooral het eerste blijkt de plank interessant te maken: bijna DDR performance met je 'oude' PC133 geheugen is natuurlijk best lekker. Als je dit samen voegt met de al bewezen features en layout van de KT7 krijg je volgens de reviewer een erg lekker moederbord :

Based largely on the KT133 chipset, KT133A's 266MHz bus yields approximately an 8% performance increase, depending on the application. Essentially, KT133A offers 95% the performance of AMD's 760 chipset yet uses inexpensive (and widely available) PC100/PC133 SDRAM.

Sure, as CPU clock speed increases DDR chipsets will widen this gap, but right now, the KT133A chipset offers incredible bang-for-the-buck. Combine this with the inexpensive price of AMD's 266MHz Athlons and we're guessing many of you will be upgrading to the KT133A chipset in the near future.

[...] When you combine this with ATA/100 RAID and the increased performance of the KT133A chipset, an already excellent product becomes even better. While the KT7A-RAID is the first KT133A motherboard we've tested, we feel confident in our belief that the KT7A-RAID will be better than 90% of the other KT133A motherboards on the market.

Storage Review verblijdt ons met een review van de Seagate Barracuda III ATA-harddrive. Deze schijf is inmiddels al een paar maanden verkrijgbaar, maar wordt desondanks nog niet al te veel gesignaleerd. Reviews die we er van gezien hebben waren lovend, vooral daar waar het de transfer-rates betreft, en ook voor wat betreft de bescheiden geluidsproductie van deze drives. Ook in deze review worden deze beide pluspunten onderschreven, echter men is niet bepaald gecharmeerd van de benchmarks die verkregen werden:

With an outer-zone transfer rate of 40.5 MB/sec, the Barracuda ATA III succeeds in displacing the IBM Deskstar 75GXP as the fastest ATA drive when it comes to sequential transfer rates. It's inner-zone score of 26.4 MB/sec is also easily the fastest we've encountered. The 'Cuda ATA III thus completes the yearly cycle in which ATA drives catch the fastest of SCSI drives… only to be outpaced as next-generation SCSI units arrive, of course.

Measured access time, unfortunately, is not nearly as impressive. The 'Cuda ATA III's score of 15.4 milliseconds yields a measured seek time of 11.2 ms… a figure that misses claims by more than 2 milliseconds. This is a phenomenon occurring too often these days in the face of ever increasing areal densities.

[...] Despite its record-breaking transfer rates, the Barracuda ATA III is no match for the category-leading Western Digital Caviar WD400BB. Seagate's offering trails WD's by a margin of 11% in the Business Disk WinMark 99. The gap in the High-End Disk WinMark is even greater- here the 'Cuda lags by 15%.

[...] The Barracuda ATA III's IOMeter Workstation Index (a normalized average of light, medium, and heavy loads) of 125.97 unfortunately can't keep up with the competition. Quantum's Fireball Plus AS, for example, outscores the Seagate by 16%. An IOMeter top-dog such as the IBM Deskstar 75GXP makes it even worse, with the 'Cuda lagging by 24%.

[...] The Barracuda ATA III features nearly non-existent idle noise, something that's becoming more and more common as time goes by. Question is, is this a result of advancing mechanisms or of the slowly deteriorating platter counts in ATA drives? Who knows… both are probably factors. The 'Cuda's seek noise is noticeable when performing fully random seeks, but hardly obtrusive. The drive remains quite cool even after extended use.

[...] Overall, the Barracuda ATA III's disappointing showing in WinBench99 and IOMeter leave Western Digital's Caviar WD400BB at the top of the current-generation heap. With the WD400BB offering better performance and the Quantum Fireball Plus AS offering higher capacities, its hard to see where the 'Cuda III fits in. One place may be in cost-sensitive applications that require little else other than high sequential transfer rates. In addition, we have to point out that the 'Cuda ATA series has traditionally excelled in price; the original, for example, shattered price barriers by being the first to deliver capacity at just one American cent per megabyte. Perhaps the 'Cuda III will enjoy a similar advantage. Nonetheless, sharp competition remains right around the corner with Maxtor's DiamondMax Plus 60 as well as a bit further off from manufacturers such as IBM and Fujitsu.

Samengevat dus wel technische hoogstandjes als 't op de transfer-rates aankomt, maar in de 'alledaagse' benchmarks komt deze drive dus niet zo lekker uit de bus! Nu maar hopen dat de prijs 'prettig' laag komt te liggen, da's natuurlijk altijd een argument om een drive wel te kopen, al is 't niet moeders snelste

WebWereld meldt dat AOL Time Warner haar IM-software niet hoeft open te stellen voor de concurrentie. Eerder meldden wij dat Bill Gates zich zorgen maakte over de monopolie van concurrent AOL op het gebied van chatsoftware, maar de FCC (Federal Communications Commission) heeft bepaald dat AOL haar netwerk pas hoeft open hoeft te stellen als er breedbandige toepassingen komen. De eisen van de FCC zouden alleen van toepassing zijn op wat 'geavanceerde, op IM gebaseerde hoge snelheidsdiensten' worden genoemd, zoals video-conferencing:

De FCC is naar eigen zeggen niet zo ver gegaan om ook eisen aan de bestaande IM-software te stellen omdat AOL's dominantie gebaseerd zou zijn op AOL's eigen technologische kunnen. "We hebben gezegd dat interoperabiliteit wenselijk is maar dat we het niet zullen afdwingen, tenzij de IM-dominantie van AOL naar nieuwe terreinen wordt uitgebreid", aldus Deborah Lathen van de FCC tegenover Wired.

Slecht nieuws dus voor de concurrentie, zoals Microsoft, Yahoo, iCast en Tribal Voice. Een woordvoerder van Yahoo reageerde: "Het is alsof je alleen e-mail kan sturen aan mensen die eenzelfde mailclient gebruiken". Analisten verwachten ondanks dit alles dat een open uitwisseling van informatie tussen de verschillende IM-programma's onvermijdelijk is, omdat de druk op AOL eenvoudigweg te hoog zal worden.

Op Icrontic is de eerste review van de Yamaha 16X SCSI CDRW te vinden. Alhoewel er geen testresultaten te vinden zijn kun je er wel wat interessante informatie over het apparaatje vinden. De drive schrijft namelijk niet de hele tijd op 16X. Hij begint op 12X en zal vervolgens 1/5 van de CD nodig hebben om op 16X te komen. Vergeleken met de welbekende Plextor 12X (ATAPI) heeft de Yamaha 2:20 minder nodig om een CD'tje te voltooien (680MB). Het apparaat is ook voorzien van een feature genaamd "Optimum Write Speed Control". Dit houdt in dat de drive je tegenhoudt als je een CD'tje probeert te branden dat niet geschikt is voor die snelheid. De brander is helaas niet voorzien van BURN-Proof technologie, maar heeft daarentegen een buffer van 8MB. Voor 250 dollar (ongeveer 580 gulden) kun je deze brander in je bezit krijgen:

The Plextor is selling for around $200. I think it's worth the extra $50 for this drive. Although several people claimed compatibility problems with the original Yamaha ATAPI drive, the SCSI drive works flawlessly. In fact, it works so well that this product gets the Icrontic Kick-Ass Product Award.

Tim Butler van Techwatch heeft een review gemaakt van de CoolerMaster CH5-5K12-01 voor socket A CPU's. De cooler heeft een koperen basis, waarvan vier koperen 'heatpipes' naar de bovenkant lopen. De rest is gemaakt van aluminium. Een 50mm fan zorgt voor een airflow van slechts 11,4CFM. De CoolerMaster presteerde niet echt geweldig, zeker geen aanrader als je gaat overclocken:

The cooler was only an average performer, but for the price you would expect a lot better cooling than the average cooler. With it’s small 50mm fan, the cooler is extremely quiet, especially compared to my FOP38 fan.

It’s been proven that the technology works (www.kendon.com) but Cooler Master haven't quite hit the mark with this cooler. I can't really recommend this cooler just yet, as it's fairly expensive (around $35 US), and does not cool as well as any of the coolers at a similar price. However, this is one technology to look for in the future with a bit more development.

Digit-Life brengt ons de press release van Iwill over de KK266 en KK266-R moederborden. Beide zijn uitgerust met de VIA KT133A chipset, alleen heeft de KK266-R een IDE RAID controller van AMI aan boord. De FSB van de moederborden is in stapjes van 1MHz op te schroeven tot een maximum van 200MHz DDR. Het moederbord is uitgerust met onboard 4.1 kanaals geluid met ondersteuning voor EAX en A3D. Jai van Insane Hardware dropte een mailtje in m'n mailbox dat ze een paar foto's online hebben staan van Intel's Tualatin Pentium III. De Tualatin is een opgevoerde Coppermine CPU gebouwd met een 0.13 micron productieproces en in het bezit van meer L2 cache, 512KB volgens Insane Hardware. Verder zal de processor een 200MHz FSB krijgen om zo te kunnen profiteren van een hogere bandbreedte in combinatie met DDR geheugen. Ook heel handig is dat er standaard een gat in de CPU zit om hem snel en simpel om te kunnen bouwen tot sleutelhanger :

Tualatin is Intel's new Socket 370 FC-PGA2 processor aimed at the mainstream market during the end of Q2 and the beginning of Q3 2001. The new and most welcome addition to the new processor is the which stands for Integrated Heat Spreader. Just like the Pentium 4, the IHS protects the CPU core from damage that may occur during installation or removal of a heatsink. The IHS also has a small hole in the left hand bottom corner just like the P4, however the local Intel Rep could not tell me what the purpose of this hole is. The main advantage of the IHS is that it allows for a greater contact area between the CPU and the heatsink, essentially allowing greater themal conductivity. The IHS also makes this CPU incompatible with most heatsinks on the market currently because the IHS is 1.5mm in height. This means that companies like Global Win and Alpha may have to redesign their clips because current ones may execute too much load onto the core and may fracture the core or the packaging. This is only a minor area that must be fixed but the chunks of copper and aluminium floating around for FCPGA processors will still work. Like the current FC-PGA processors, we expect to see the same sort or resistor configuration as we see on the current Pentium III processors.

VIA heeft vandaag bekend gemaakt dat de levering van de Apollo KT266 chipset voor Socket A processors is begonnen. I Am Not A Geek (waar al genoeg flauwe grappen over zijn gemaakt ) heeft een review gebouwd van een 1,3GHz Thunderbird processor. Hoewel AMD deze nog niet verkoopt kun je bij OCZ een overgeklokte 1,2GHz kopen die gegarandeerd stabiel is. Je betaalt niet veel extra voor deze garantie en de 100MHz die je extra krijgt zorgt toch weer voor een paar extra frames per seconde. Naast 1,3GHz Thunderbirds verkoopt OCZ ook 1,4GHz versies en 1GHz Durons:

These CPU's are pretty much the fastest thing out right now. Sure there is the Pentium 4, but good luck finding one, It also is going to cost you a hell of a lot. The 1.4GHz Athlon from OCZ is only $359.99, and the 1.3GHz Athlon with a KT7 Board, and 128MB Ram is only $429.99. Those are two amazing deals, that you will have a very hard time beating.

This CPU was 100% stable, at its target speed, just like the four OCZ 1GHz Durons, and OCZ 1GHz Athlon I have tested. For the little money they charge you extra to guarantee your CPU will overclock well is worth it to me.

Een aantal maanden na de release van de AMD 750 chipset kwam AMD ineens met een nieuwe feature aanzetten die de performance van de moederborden een stukje kon verbeteren: Super Bypass. Destijds werd het als een geschenk uit de hemel ontvangen, er kwamen zelfs nieuwe revisies van moederborden uit met Super Bypass enabled, hoewel het eigenlijk niet meer dan een bugfix was.

Insanehardware besloot daarom eens te kijken naar de staat van Super Bypass in de AMD 761 northbridge. Op een A7M266 voorzien van een 1GHz Thunderbird met een FSB van 200MHz werd het verschil in performance gemeten met Super Bypass enabled. Alle gedraaide benchmarks bleken er voordeel van te hebben, maar procentueel stelde het niet veel voor. Pas als ook naar de 266MHz FSB is gekeken kan men met zekerheid iets zeggen over de effectiviteit van Super Bypass op de AMD 760 chipset:

At this stage we cannot conclude as to how effective Super Bypass is in the 761 Chipset. Rest assured we will provide extra benchmarks when possible but so far we can see a difference in most, if not all benchmarks. At this stage we can really only see a very small jump in performance which doesnt even break double figures if you look at percentages. In the comming weeks we will recover this at 266MHz FSB and see if increasing the speed the 761 runs at increases or decreases the effectiveness of Super Bypass

Op 2Cooltek vinden we een erg interessante uiteenzetting over het testen van heatsinks op hun thermische conductiviteit. Echt het soort verhaal dat geen enkele rechtbesnaarde Tweaker mag missen!

Laat je niet misleiden door de toepassing van een snelbindertje en een oud plaatje multiplex, hier is iemand bezig om een eenduidige testomgeving voor coolers en heatsinks vorm te geven . De reden waarom deze opstelling eigenlijk de enige valide en betrouwbare manier van testen is kan je hier nalezen. Hier wat afbeeldingen en enkele quotes uit 't bijbehorende verhaal:

Here is the same 40 watt peltier that has been the test mule for all of my previous tests, with a few additions. I installed copper heat-plates, to ensure that the entire surface of the peltier is cooled. Then I cut a small copper slug to 10.5mm square, and attached it to the center. That is a close approximation of the surface area of the Intel Coppermines and AMD T-birds and Durons.

MiWa® liet ons weten dat de Mobile versie van de Duron vanaf vandaag beschikbaar is. De Durons zullen te verkrijgen zijn in snelheden van 600 en 700MHz. De nieuwe Duron is natuurlijk gebaseerd op de originele core maar zal op een lager voltage lopen. NEC heeft de eerste notebooks die van deze processor gebruik gaan maken al aangekondigd:

De voorlopige kosten per 1000 stuks zijn ook al bekend. Voor de 600MHz versie moet $75 worden betaald terwijl voor de 700MHz versie $123 moet worden neergelegd.

Gideontech heeft een handleiding voor peltier overclocking online gezet. In het uitgebreide artikel, dat alles behandelt van de benodigde stroom tot het gebruik van coldplates, wordt peltier overclocking bereikbaar voor de newbies op dit gebied. Hieronder een stukje over de isolatie:

Whenever you cool something below the ambient temperature, you always have to worry about condensation, and since your using a peltier you have to worry even more since your CPU can go below 0ºC. Since we don’t wont to invite water into our computers to fry our components there are a few simple steps that we can take to avoid, or at least fight off condensation.

Seal your peltier unit and copper cold plate (I’ll explain what this is later in the article) in CLOSED cell foam or a neoprene. The closed cell foam or neoprene seals your processor and peltier from outside air that way you don’t have condensation next or close to the cpu.

Also take a piece of closed cell foam or a neoprene and put in the middle of the socket, this insulates the backside of the cpu from out side air that may get in and condensate on the backside of the cpu.

EBN schrijft dat de kans groot is dat Sun gebruik gaat maken van de AMD Athlon in haar nieuwe low-end servers. Volgende week zal Cobalt, een onderdeel van Sun, een nieuwe low-end internet server aankondigen aankondigen die waarschijnlijk uitgerust zal zijn met een eenzame Athlon processor. Voor AMD zal dit een belangrijke stap zijn in de verovering van de servermarkt:

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Athlon processor may make its long-sought leap into the server market when Sun Microsystems Inc. next week unveils its Cobalt division's low-end Internet-appliance server.

Some of Sun's other chip suppliers this week said the new Cobalt front-end server will use Athlon, which would mark the first server design win for AMD's top-of-the-line processor. Neither Sun, Mountain View, Calif., nor AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., would comment, although a Sun spokeswoman said the company will introduce the new Cobalt network server next week.

Although AMD has been fighting an uphill battle to move Athlon into the server space, it already supplies the K6-II processor for Cobalt's current one-rack Internet server. Sources said AMD would have an inside track to push Athlon for the next-generation Cobalt system.
