Op nu.nl is te lezen dat de AOL duitsland een boete moet gaan betalen voor het feit dat via hun mensen illegale "muziek" konden downloaden.

Hit Box Software, uitgever van muziek voor de karaoke-beoefening, had AOL aangeklaagd wegens het verspreiden van meer dan duizend illegale kopieën van zijn digitale muziek. Dat gebeurde al twee jaar geleden. Volgens Hit Box had AOL Duitsland de distributie van de muziek moeten blokkeren. De rechter stelde Hit Box deze week in het gelijk.

Het verweer van AOL dat het onmogelijk is het internet-verkeer van 22 miljoen gebruikers te volgen, legde geen juridisch gewicht in de schaal. Net zo min als het argument van de verdediging dat een dergelijke controle praktisch gelijk zou staan aan censuur.

De uitspraak valt Europese internet-aanbieders rauw op de maag en wordt ook argwanend bekeken vanaf de overkant van de oceaan. Recent werd in Groot-Brittannië een vergelijkbare rechterlijke uitspraak gedaan in het geval van een professor die een ISP (Internet Service Provider) beschuldigde van het verspreiden van godslasterlijke taal via een nieuwsgroep. Ook hij werd in het gelijk gesteld.

Deze uitspraak vormt een belangrijk precedent en kan ervoor zorgen dat ISP's aansprakelijkheid kunnen worden gesteld voor acties van anderen (foute homepages ed.), iets wat ik vind.

Rene Maathuis bracht ons een linkje richting deze MP3.com review van de Genica Portable MP-CD speler. Volgens MP3.com is dit de eerste draagbare MP3-CD speler die ook daardwerkelijk leverbaar is. Ten opzichte van de Mambox P300 heeft de Genica bovendien als voordeel dat de prijs veel lager is: $99 ipv $179 voor de Mambox:

The Genica Portable MP3/Audio CD Player has one feature that sets it apart from its competition: it exists. That fact alone makes this device a worthwhile buy compared to such vaporware as the PineUSA CD/MP3 player and the MamboX (though they claim they will ship the week of April 17, 2000). Considering it is a first-generation CD/MP3 player, it works well and has some extra nifty features. It plays either ISO 9660 data CDs filled with MP3s or regular audio CDs. We tried playing a "hybrid" CD with audio and data and the player only found the audio.

Webwereld meldt dat het KPN netwerk de afgelopen tijd slecht bereikbaar is door problemen met de inbel software. Deze gaat over z'n nek wanneer wij Nederlanders in de piekuren met tienduizenden tegelijk gaan internetten. KPN dochters Planet Internet, HCC Net en Het Net ondervinden hinder van de problemen, alsmede gebruikers van World Online en Nok Nok:

Deze week is het al enkele malen voorgekomen dat gebruikers niet het internet op konden. Bij het opbouwen van de verbinding verschijnt dan een mededeling als: 'wachtwoord is ongeldig'.

Volgens KPN-woordvoerder Michel Hueber heeft het probleem niets te maken met een tekort aan capaciteit op het KPN-netwerk. "Het probleem zit in de netwerkmanagement software", aldus Hueber. "We werken met de leverancier aan een oplossing." Om welke leverancier het gaat wil Hueber niet zeggen.

HardOCP heeft wat benchmarks kunnen bemachtigen van de AMD thunderbird, er zijn jammer genoeg alleen SiSoft SANDRA benchmarks, niet echt het beste programma om cache prestaties te meten, Quake III Arena of Sysmark 2000 zou beter zijn geweest maar dit is beter dan niks :

Rockgroup Metallica heeft zowel de makers van Napster als een aantal universiteiten die het programma bleef toestaan voor de rechter gesleept. Op de een of andere manier waren ze het er niet helemaal mee eens met het feit dat hun muziek zomaar gratis kon worden uitgewisseld .

Het muziekuitwisselprogramma dat door grote groepen gebruikers over de hele wereld gebruikt wordt om illegale kopietjes van muziekstukken uit te wisselen, is voor de tweede keer in korte tijd voor de rechter gedaagd. Dit keer door de bekende rockgroep Metallica.

De groep klaagt niet alleen de makers van het programma aan, maar ook een aantal Amerikaanse universiteiten die het gebruik van het programma oogluikend hebben toegelaten. Het programma is vooral onder studenten erg populair, en in Amerika hebben al verscheidene universiteiten hun poorten voor Napster gesloten omdat het programma teveel bandbreedte opslokte. Volgens de advocaten verdient Napster geld "met het illegaal kopiëren van muziekbestanden, en doen de universiteiten schijnheilig mee".

Het drama rond de i820 chipset lijkt voorlopig niet te eindigen, nu The Register nieuwe problemen met Intel's eigen i820+SDRAM plank aan het licht brengt. Het BIOS van de CC820 blijkt te crashen op DIMMs met een onleesbare SPD chip en tevens is er een probleempje met een condensator die de stroomtoevoer naar de DIMM slots reguleert. Deze condensator ontlaadt zichzelf sporadisch, waardoor een systeem zichzelf op kan hangen:

The SPD holds information about the speed and size of the memory and passes it to the system BIOS. If the data is missing or unreadable, the system either hangs or fails to boot at all.

[...] But memory manufacturers point to a couple of issues: firstly there isn't a firm standard for exactly what format the data in the SPD should take, and secondly, this is a BIOS issue, and therefore Intel's problem, not theirs.

[...] A product change notification was issued for the CC820 by Intel on March 28, advising users to replace a capacitor with a resistor. This change prevents a problem occurring where the capacitor - which is supposed to smooth out the power going to the DIMMS - occasionally discharges itself, sending a spike to the memory which is interpreted as a data corruption, hanging the system. Adding a 150 ohm resistor between the Memory Translator Hub (MTH) and the SDRAM eliminates the bug.

Alsof dat allemaal nog niet erg genoeg is blijkt de plank ook nog problemen te hebben om voldoende spanning aan de AGP poort te leveren.

ZDNet Australia heeft een leuk artikeltje gepost over het fenomeen overclocking, de opmerkelijke activiteit die waarschijnlijk ook populair is onder bezoekers van deze website :

Overclocking usually begins with a desire to wring more performance out of a chip than was paid for. But overclockers admit that as the hobby takes off, thrift often goes out the window. They can easily spend hundreds of dollars building their rigs, far more than the $150 or so that a faster chip might cost.

"You might start with a 400MHz Pentium II and wonder if you can push that to 533," said Chris Angelini, a freshman at the University of California at Los Angeles. "But instead of just going out and buying a new chip, you might buy, oh, a heat sink instead. Then, all of a sudden, you are buying thermal paste, too. Then you say to yourself, 'I might as well just go ahead and get a water-cooled system.' "

In their greed for speed, overclockers say no detail is too small. For example, if the surface of a chip isn't completely flat, tiny air pockets will develop, interfering with temperature reduction. And so overclockers take ultrafine sandpaper and grind down the surface of their microprocessor, a process, known as "lapping," that is fraught with risks. "If you lap a chip too much, then you expose the die of the chip, and it won't work anymore," says Justin Emerson, an overclocker and avid gamer who works for PlanetAllegiance.com, a Web gaming site.

Er is een is een interresante discusie gaande op The Tech Report, volgens de benchmarks die we hebben gezien is de performance van een celeron II heel wat lager dan van een Coppermine, zoveel dat ze denken dat Intel meer heeft gesloopt dan de cache en FSB alleen:

Everyone keeps reporting how the new C2 processors can overclock like mad (533 to 900, 633 to 1GHz, etc). The C2 cpus do not perform clock-for-clock as their Coppermine similar-core-sibling and I haven't found anyone that takes a look at why. Sure the C2 has 1/2 the cache but if that is truly the only difference than the Cu, then adjusting bus speeds and matching C2 MHz to Cu MHz, they should perform very closely (except in cache intensive apps). So what else has changed with the C2? I smell a story here waiting to be discovered: (1) What is holding the C2 back and (2) can it be undone by the community who loves to turn the tables on Intel? (Of course it only becomes a real story if there is something that can be adjusted to the C2 to make it run like a Cu)

[...] So the question is, has Intel limited the performance of the Celeron IIs in some way beyond saddling 'em with a default bus speed of 66MHz and disabling half of the processor's L2 cache? What do you guys think?

Als we de informatie van The Register mogen geloven (en meestal kan dat), dan volgt er tot juni een nieuwe periode van Coppermine schaarste. De oorzaak ligt in een combinatie van yield en packaging problemen:

One packaging supplier has cut back its commitment to supply Intel to less than 50 per cent than it promised. The yield problem, we understand, is due to technical problems with Intel's flip-chip technology.

Ik lees bij WebWereld dat Microsoft's Frontpage een backdoor bevat waardoor gebruikers na het intypen van een trieste code die Netscapers voor 'weenies' uitmaakt toegang kunnen krijgen tot beveiligde gedeeltes van websites, zoals admin files e.d. De oplossing voor dit probleem is het verwijderen van het bestand 'dvwssr.dll'.

Het lek is ontdekt door twee beveiligingsexperts. Deel van de code is de denigrerende opmerking: 'Netscape engineers are weenies!'. Kennelijk is de code geschreven door een softwareontwikkelaar van Microsoft ten tijde van de strijd tussen Microsoft IE en Netscape.

Microsoft zal al haar klanten binnenkort per e-mail waarschuwen. De eenvoudigste oplossing is het verwijderen van het bestand 'dvwssr.dll'. Dit bestand bevat de code en is deel van de Frontpage 98 serverextensies. Volgens Lipner zullen schuldige softwaremakers worden gestraft en wellicht ontslagen.

Het is niet bekend of ooit gebruik is gemaakt van het gat. Een hacker kan via deze 'backdoor' toegang krijgen tot de beheerskant van de website. Zo kan ook toegang worden verkregen tot bestanden met gegevens van sitegebruikers.

Since the frequency generator failed to provide higher FSB frequency, we didn't increase it any more. That's why if we take into account that officially the mainboard doesn't allow increasing Vcore as well, which is important for highly overclockable FC-PGA processors, then our verdict will sound inexorably: overclocking unfriendly. [break]Over het algemeen bleek het bord wel snel en stabiel:[/break] So, the first mainboard on VIA Apollo Pro133A designed for Socket 370 - Gigabyte GA-6VX7-4X - showed the best performance of all, and besides, proved highly stable and reliable at work. Bij AnandTech is vandaag een review gepost van Maxtor's DiamondMax Plus 40 Ultra ATA 66 HDD (leuke naam trouwens). Getest is het model met 20.4 GB aan opslagcapaciteit. Zoals dat normaal is bij Anand krijg je een hele berg benchmarks (19 pagina's!), maar de uitkomst is overduidelijk: dit is een toppertje.

Het volk van Target PC heeft een review online gemikt van de 12x CRD-BP2 herfikker van Sanyo. Erg leuk aan deze drive is de BURN-proof feature waardoor eindgebruikers nooit meer geconfronteerd worden met irritante buffer underruns. Hieronder wat meer info:

After the recording phase begins, the micro-controller inside the CD-R/RW drive always monitors the status of the buffer. When the drive judges that a Buffer Under run Error is about to happen, it suspends recording at the appropriate location of the EFM (Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation) pattern. While the drive stays in suspend mode, it continues trying to receive data from the host PC to fill-up its data buffer and subsequently prepares itself to restart recording by accessing the end of the previously recorded area (EFM pattern).

To continue recording at the appropriate place, the drive compares the recorded data with the data in buffer for synchronizing adjacent frames. In simpler terms, it restarts recording as soon as it exactly locates the last recorded point. Because the micro-controller in the drive stores the suspended recording address, it controls the status of both the buffer and the servo-mechanism so that the drive restarts recording at exactly the previously suspended recording point.

Storage Review heeft de nieuwe Quantum Fireball Plus LM onder de loep genomen, een 7200rpm ATA-66 harddisk met 10.2 gig per platter, een seek time van 8.5 milliseconds en een buffer van 2MB. De reviewer kwam tot de conclusie dat de drive errug goed presteerde waardoor hij de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 heeft verslagen als 'meest aanbevolen 7200rpm ATA schijf':

Overall, the Fireball Plus LM delivers the most impressive performance we've yet measured from an ATA drive. Many readers have undoubtedly noticed SCSI's rise to prominence during StorageReview.com's recent "realignment" during our 2nd anniversary series. The Fireball Plus LM, however, goes to show that when given the proper mechanics, an ATA drive can keep up with similar SCSI units. Compare the LM to, say, Quantum's own Atlas V. While featuring similar data densities, the Atlas V boasts an impressive 10.4 millsecond access time. Under a Workstation Access Pattern, the LM actually comes out on top under lighter Loads. As long as you can live with 30 gigs of capacity or less in a single drive, the LM is the ATA drive to get!

Dean Kent meldde het al eerder in zijn industry update van april; het zal nog tot september of oktober duren voordat leveranciers moederborden gebaseerd op de i815 'Solano II' chipset in handen krijgen. Net als het geval was bij de 1GHz Pentium III van Intel zijn eerst de grote OEMs zoals Dell en HP aan de beurt. Zij mogen de eerste shipments van deze chipset met PC133 SDRAM en ATA-100 support ergens in juni verwachten.

A boxed motherboard version of Intel's Solano II chipset, which utilises synchronous memory (SDRAM) is now unlikely to arrive until September or October this year, it has emerged.

But in a further sign of channel alienation, it appears that major PC manufacturers will get mobos from Intel as early as June.

The channel is already upset about Intel's boxed chip scheme, after they were told just after Coppermines were launched on 25 October last year that they would have to wait for supplies.

That led one major European distributor to tell The Register "We had an Intel business, but it was just chipped away by the firm."

Intel has clear priorities about which firms get its top of the range microprocessors, but AMD, its much smaller rival, has carefully cultivated the channel over the last two years.

Tom heeft een stukje geschreven waarin hij een Pentium II 266 gaat upgraden en dan laat zien welke onderdelen (RAM, CPU, videokaart en hardeschijf) belangrijk zijn voor een upgrade en wat voor impact ze hebben op de performance van de computer:

The scene's a familiar one to anyone who owns a PC and uses it on a regular basis - two years after buying it; the computer is a lame duck. In the past, constant updates of Microsoft's operating systems and Office applications made hardware upgrades necessary. Times have changed however and 2D applications are no longer the driving force for new processors, as the following performance charts show. Today, 3D games are the most typical resource-eaters on the consumer market. In the professional segment, image processing, rendering, ray tracing and CAD constantly demand more processing power from a system.

[...] A carefully planned upgrade can be less expensive than buying a new complete PC system, however the additional organizational overhead is higher. If you can invest a little time and thought the one component really worth exchanging and upgrading is the processor. Upgrading from 266 MHz to 466 MHz for about $80 helped our PC run about twice as fast in most application areas. The average performance gain was about 30%. Pay great attention to the socket type, make sure the BIOS is up-to-date and ensure that the power supply voltage (for K6 devices) and possible multiplication factors are available on the main board. Investing in memory helps to improve things too because the system doesn't have to swap data to the hard disk so often. 128 MB is sufficient for most Windows 98 users. The current price for 64 MB memory is about $45, which is an acceptable price.

De beste upgrade is dus een nieuwe CPU plus RAM, voor $125 dollar ben je in het bezit van een aardig wat sneller systeem .

De mannen van iXBT hebben hun maandelijkse overzicht van hardware nieuws weer online gezet. Ze hebben samengevat wat er deze maand bekend is geworden en gebeurd op CPU, storage, mamaplankjes en video gebied. Hieronder een quote over de 1GHz battle:

This month has acquired nearly historical importance for the entire human society: due to superhuman effort two largest x86 processor manufacturers managed to surpass 1GHz! The closer the beginning of March was, the harder was the competition. Who would be the winner: Intel or AMD? The situation was very similar to what we saw a year ago or so, when these two companies also fought for the leadership on the way to another height - a new CPU generation. At that time AMD won the game and announced its K6-III (which has now disappeared from AMD distributor's price list) a few days before Pentium III. And today AMD again has wrested the victory at the last second having announced its 1GHz Athlon two days prior to Pentium III supporting the same working frequency. It happened on March 6.

However, despite this really tiny time difference, AMD seemed to be in a much more favorable situation. If AMD can afford to launch 900, 950 and 1000MHz processors, then the things with Intel are best of all reflected by a virtual Pentium III 1GHz working with some special cooling and hence requiring some special mainboards. Besides, it doesn't support dual-processor configurations. In fact, you will get a much clearer picture of the situation if you look at its 866 and 850MHz counterparts launched one and a half weeks later. At least they came out not in the third quarter.

In navolging van de nodige andere sites heeft nu ook Andy Drake van BX Boards zijn review van de vooral qua features goede Abit KA7 online gezet. Het blijkt dat het moederbord bij een bus van 133 MHz geen PCI divider van 4 ondersteunt en je daardoor je PCI bus op 44 MHz laat draaien in plaats van de wat gezondere 33 MHz. Hieronder een gedeelte uit de conclusie die verder overwegend positief is:

Any board that can take our reference Athlon 650's above 800Mhz, when other boards struggle to break 700Mhz deserves a lot of praise. Abit have carried their expertise for high bus speed overclocking over to Athlon mainboards, and for the overclocker I really can't think of many improvements Abit could make to the KA7 in this area.

Is there a downside? Unfortunately yes. KX133, and to some extent VIA chipsets in general suffer SDRAM compatibility problems, and the KA7 is no exception. In fact, as far as DIMM compatibility is concerned, I'm sad to say this is one of the worse boards I've tested. The failure to work with Samsung -G8, one of the most popular OC DIMMs is almost unforgivable. I do expect a new BIOS to improve this, and indeed a beta-BIOS supplied to BXBoards at the 11th hour, including additional SDRAM tweaking setting looks a step in the right direction.

These are live issues, and will put off many users who do not wish to overclock. However for the tweaker the choice is simple - there is no better board available for the Athlon overclocker. If you want to squeeze the maximum out of your Athlon, then the KA7 is the board for you. Despite its flaws (and much of this is attributable to the KX133 chipset), the generous expansion possibilities, and the inclusion of the always great Softmenu III makes this board a winner.

Quite simply, if you want to get the best Athlon mainboard, you need to get the Abit KA7!

Tachyon wees mij er via de nieuwssubmitter op dat Alex van Kaam weer een nieuwe versie heeft uitgebracht van zijn handige proggie MotherBoard Monitor. Dat komt daarmee op versie 4.17. Hier de verbeteringen in de nieuwe versie:

Released MBM 4.17, it has support for the Via 596B chipset, which means that populair boards like the Asus P3V-4X and MSI6199 are supported. Also cpuidle pro should be supported under NT/2000
