Quantum Corporation's Hard Disk Drive Group announced today that it has begun volume shipments of its Atlas V 7,200 RPM disk drives with the industry-standard Ultra160 SCSI interface. The Atlas V features the industry's lowest acoustics (3.2Bels) and the highest non-operational (300Gs) and operational (63Gs) shock specifications for SCSI drives. It also has a fast seek time of 6.3ms, a 29MB/sec maximum sustained data rate, and up to 160MB/sec burst transfer rate. As the industry's highest density 7,200 RPM SCSI drive at 9GB per platter, the Atlas V provides outstanding value, reliability and performance for the high-end disk drive market.
The Atlas V Ultra160 SCSI drive incorporates advanced SCSI interface features such as Cyclical Redundancy Check and Domain Validation, as well as the new Fairness feature which improves overall system performance by providing more balanced access for all SCSI devices on the bus. Furthermore, Quantum is the only supplier committed to implementing Asynchronous Information Protection (AIP) which provides added data reliability for asynchronous data phases such as SCSI commands and messages. The advanced interface is also fully backward compatible with Ultra2 and Ultra SCSI systems for easy integration with existing networks.
The 9GB, 18GB and 36GB capacity drives for the Atlas V are available immediately in both SCA-2 (80-pin) and Wide (68-pin). Manufacturer's suggested retail prices for the new Quantum drives are:
9GB $299 (part numbers: QM309100XC-SCA and QM309100XC-LW)
18GB $449 (part numbers: QM318300XC-SCA and QM318300XC-LW)
36GB $799 (part numbers: QM336700XC-SCA and QM336700XC-LW)
