Sinterklaas 82 tm liet ons weten dat uit Memory Module Price Index van Global Sources blijkt dat de DRAM prijzen de afgelopen week licht gedaald zijn. Halverwege juli was er voor de 128MB DIMM prijzen sprake van een stabilisatie op $125,50, maar nu is dat gedaald tot 122 dollar. Hopelijk blijft deze daling nog even doorzetten, voordat de prijzen definitief gaan stijgen tot het eind van dit jaar:

Ace's Hardware heeft een korte samenvatting gepost van de conference call, die AMD vandaag over de aankondiging van de x86-64 architectuur heeft gegeven. Zoals eerder gespeculeerd blijkt Technical Floating Point vervangen te zijn door SSE/SSE2. Samen met open source developers wordt er gewerkt aan een x86-64 Linux port en een geoptimaliseerde versie van de GCC compiler:

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een leuk artikel online geketst waarin hij ons vertelt over breedband internet, oftwel ADSL, kabel internet en surfen via de satelliet. Hieronder een gedeelte uit zijn conclusie:

Op welke manier kunt u zich nu het beste op internet aansluiten? Indien u graag de dure telefoonkosten van inbellen naar internet bespaart, liggen ADSL en kabel internet natuurlijk voor de hand. Beide kunnen gelukkig zeer hoge snelheden behalen. Het voordeel van kabel internet is dat het tegenwoordig al op zeer veel plaatsen verkrijgbaar is. De kwaliteit van kabel internet verschilt van stad tot stad: op sommige plaatsen is iedereen razend enthousiast, maar op andere plaatsen lijkt kabel internet helaas ook weer een diepe ellende. Helaas moet er bij satelliet internet nog steeds gebruik worden gemaakt van een modem voor de upstream, maar de hoge snelheden bij het downloaden maken veel goed. Één conclusie kunnen we in ieder geval trekken: internetten met een standaard analoog modempje kan anno 2000 eigenlijk echt niet meer.

Bij Envy News hebben ze een review gebakken van de Sony MDR-V900 headphones. Volgens de reviewer is de geluidskwaliteit _erg_ goed en zit het ook wel snor met het draagcomfort. Er is echter wel een min puntje: je moet $260 dollar neerleggen als je de trotse bezitter wilt zijn van dit speelgoed:

Bij GideonTech waren ze niet helemaal tevreden toen bleek dat hun P3-700 gecombineerd met de Asus P3V4X niet meer op de goddelijke snelheid van 1001MHz kon draaien, iets wat wel mogelijk was als de Abit BE6-2 gebruikt werd. Ze bleven echter niet bij de pakken neerzitten en bedachten dat de ICS clockgenerator wel eens voor het probleem zou kunnen zorgen, dit is een klein chipje die voor de FSB zorgt. Na er een klein koelertje op de ICS chip geplakt te hebben bleek de overclockbaarheid flink te verbeteren, de snelheid ging van 980MHz all te way up naar 1022MHz :

I have hit a speed that I wasn't even able to attain with the BE6.2! I have tried 148 and even 150, but I get BSODs within Windows 98SE after 1 minute of use.

Het volk van 3D GameForce vond het nodig om een review te schrijven van het Samsung SyncMaster 950p CRT beeldkanon van 19 inchen groot met een maximale resolutie van 1600x1200 @ 76Hz en een dotpitch van .26mm. Het schermpie kost slechts 360 dollar dus zeer prijsgunstig voor budget tweakers. Hieronder de conclusie:

In my mind, Samsung’s SyncMaster 950p is among the greatest 19” monitors that can be bought for under $400, and one of the best invar shadow mask screens overall as well. It certainly won’t break the bank, and you won’t be disappointed by your investment. It’s only a matter of time before 21” monitors finally come down into the average consumer’s price range, at which point we’ll be considering them as well. But at this point, the value of the 950p is unbeatable.

Thresh's FiringSquad heeft de 2 nieuwe smurfkleurige optische muizen van Logitech eens onder de loep genomen. De Wheel Mouse heeft nog steeds de klassieke vormgeving en is een stuk kleiner dan zijn grote MouseMan Wheel broer die een wat meer ergonomische look heeft. De reviewer vond laatstgenoemde wat te lomp om mee te gamen, maar dit is uiteraard een persoonlijke voorkeur. Beide muizen bleken zeer fijn in het gebruik:

Venator schrijft dat ze bij HotHardware Abit's grafische paradepaardje, de Abit Siluro GeForce2 GTS 64MB, stevig onder handen hebben genomen. Het overclocken van deze kaart ging aardig plezierig, het geheugen naar 405MHz en de core richting de 235MHz vormde voor het geteste exemplaar geen probleem. Ondanks het feit dat er naast goede overclock resultaten niks bijzonders aan de kaart is mocht kreeg de kaart toch een negen van de reviewer:

We were floored to see that the Siluro GF256 GTS, could handle a clock speed of 405MHz. DDR on the memory interface. Again, the Hyundai chips that are on this board are rated at 166MHz. SDR and 333MHz. DDR. At 405MHz., we are talking about a 202.5 MHz. SDR clock speed and that is a lot of guard band that is built into these SDRAM chips. Furthermore, as we all know by now, the GeForce product line has always suffered from lack of sufficient memory bandwidth. As a result, this speed boost should prove very performance enhancing.

Finally, at these clock speeds, 235MHz. Core and 405MHz. Memory, the card was completely stable and we saw no visual artifacts. This may or may not be true for all Siluro cards. As you know, this is not an exact science. However, the likelihood is good that you will experience the same kind of results. Also, we were able to over-clock the memory to 420MHz. (the max end of the slider) and the card would run through a round of benchmarks fine. However, after extended testing at this speed, the card would seem to reset itself (on the fly mind you) to a much lower clock speed and the benchmarks would actually run quite slowly. We are not sure if there is some sort of "protection" mechanism built into the card but we have asked Abit to look into this and we will report back to you.

Zoals eerder aangekondigd, zal AMD komende maandag opnieuw een prijsverlaging doorvoeren. The Register heeft de details, hieronder overzichtelijk in een tabelletje bijeen gemikt. Eind juli heeft er voor de high-end Athlons (1GHz) als een extra prijsverlagingen plaats gevonden, maar daar heb ik de exacte cijfers niet van.

Zoals je ziet worden de Durons nu echt spotgoedkoop, echt een ideale proc wanneer je lekker wilt overklokken, maar geen trek hebt om veel geld aan een nieuwe CPU te spenderen (thanks JP voor de link).

Humi meldt dat Anand een korte editorial heeft geschreven over AMD's x86-64 en Intel's IA-64 architectuur. In deze editorial wordt kort uitgelegt wat de verschillen tussen beide architecturen zijn en wat de voor- en nadelen zijn. Het grote nadeel van IA-64 is duidelijk het ontbreken van een echte 32-bit mode en het probleem van AMD zou volgens Anand misschien wel de chipset kunnen worden, ze zien Via nog geen high-end chipsets maken, dus zal AMD het alleen moeten doen:

The first x86-64 based processors from AMD will be available sometime next year, this is contrary to rumors that we've seen pop up but realistically speaking, you're not going to see a SledgeHammer (K8) in 2000.

Like the current Athlon core, there will eventually be many variations on the K8 core. Most likely variations based on cache size, core clock frequency and maybe even FSB frequency will allow the x86-64 architecture to slowly but eventually filter down to non-enterprise applications.

The only issue we see at this point in time is chipset support for the K8. As of now, VIA is the biggest chipset provider for AMD's processors, but we can guarantee you that VIA, a company that is based around producing value chipsets, isn't going to be making enterprise level K8 chipsets. AMD's two other supporters in the chipset industry, ALi and SiS aren't even as big as VIA in the desktop chipset market right now, there's no way either of them will be supplying K8 chipsets, this leaves AMD to handle the task alone.

Developing and producing a chipset for such a high-end processor is not easy, it will definitely be much more difficult to implement than AMD's 750 was, and even then, the 750 was much more difficult than the BX chipsets motherboard manufacturers were used to playing with.

It should be interesting to see how the entire picture unfolds as there is much more to a successful processor than a solid architecture, although having the latter is definitely one step in the right direction.

Ace's Hardware heeft getracht wat conclusies te trekken uit het x86-64 .PDFje dat AMD vandaag aan software developers ter beschikking heeft gesteld. Volgens de voorlopige bevindingen van Ace's Hardware zijn er geen tekenen dat de 'Technical Floating Point' extensies waarover eerder o.a. door Paul Demone werd geschreven, onderdeel uit maken van de x86-64 ISA. In plaats hiervan heeft AMD mogelijk gekozen voor SSE als alternatief voor de brakke stack-based x87 instructieset:

I have been looking over AMD's x86-64 Programmers' Overview for the past little while and, interestingly enough, I have failed to find any documentation detailing the long-rumored Technical Floating-Point (TFP) extensions. By TFP, I am referring to AMD's floating-point flat register-file, as opposed to the stack-based x87.

The legacy x87, necessary for binary compatibility, is one of the last outposts of inefficiency in current x86 MPUs like the Athlon and Pentium III. While x86 processors have mostly caught up to RISC implementations in integer performance through agressive out-of-order implementations, they still fall well behind in floating-point performance. Take SPECfp2000, for example. The 1 GHz Pentium III achieves a base score of 327, while the 833 MHz 21264 scores 599. Obviously, there is room for improvement, which brings us to our question: where are the Technical Floating Point instructions? While the x86-64 Programmers' Overview dedicates a chapter to integer instructions in 64-bit mode, the references made to floating-point instructions are rare:

" No changes have been made to x87 floating-point instructions, so those instructions are not covered here. "

In fact, the table listed on page 10 indicates no change in the floating-point register set. Eight 80-bit floating-point registers, shared by the MMX unit, are specified under both legacy and 64-bit modes. I can find no reference to TFP, and everything I can find seems to indicate there have been no changes for floating-point operations under x86-64.

I am speculating here that TFP may have been shelved for SSE, which is specified in the overview. There aren't any trademarks mentioned for SSE (technically iSSE, according to Intel), and there is no mention of 3DNow! either. So there's certainly a bit more to unravel... Floris Itsme! meldt dat AMD vandaag de x86-64 specificaties gepubliceerd heeft. De aanpak die AMD heeft gekozen om 64-bit te kunnen gebruiken is een uitbreiding van de x86 instructieset zodat ook 32-bit programma's zonder problemen kunnen blijven werken. De voordelen van 64-bit zijn: meer adresseerbaar geheugen en de mogelijkheid om 64-bit getallen te verwerken. Daarnaast heeft AMD ook nog wat extra instructies toegevoegd om zo de FPU performance flink te verbeteren.

Het gerucht van JC over de vertraagde release van de Pentium 4 blijkt bevestigd te worden door een analist van Salomon Smith Barney. Volgens SSB is de P4 met 8 weken gedelayed omdat de SDRAM chipset niet op tijd beschikbaar is, maar een vertraging vanwege tegenvallende yields zou ook een mogelijke verklaring kunnen zijn. Onderstaande info is afkomstig uit deze posting op het Silicon Investor message board:

Willy delay: The most interesting thing about JC's rumor is that SSB said that Willy might be delayed by the same amount- 8 weeks. SSB though said it would be because of chipset problems, citing the need for an SDRAM chipset. This makes no sence though, because 8 weeks is insufficient extra time to allow for crash chipset development, unless the decision was make many months ago, and there was some recent delay in the program.

My interpretation is that Willy isn't yielding the required speeds, pure and simple. Scumbria has pointed out the inherent clock skew problems in the double pumped ALU. (3GHz skew tolerances!) We need to remind ourselves of "the pattern." Intel has screwed up every major technology project for the past 18 months. It's failure to execute, pure and simple. It's a classic case of a company who's lost its core focus, and best tech people, and now has pointy hair types running amuck.

Ace's Hardware meldt dat de 1GHz Pentium III eindelijk zijn opwachting heeft gemaakt op Pricewatch.com. Goedkoop kan de processor niet genoemd worden: de laagste prijs is 1180 dollar (omgerekend ~ FL 3190 incl. BTW). Dit is zo'n 520 dollar meer dan de PIII-933EB en 1GHz Athlon, die beiden voor een prijs van rond de 660 dollar worden aangeboden.

Tech Extreme heeft een review gepost van eind juni aangekondigde optische Logitech Wheel Mouse. De vormgeving van de muis komt overeen met de welbekende First Wheel Mouse, met als verschil dat de Wheel Mouse over een hip donkerblauw jasje beschikt. Tech Extreme is erg positief over het muisje en meent dat de reactiesnelheid van de Wheel Mouse superieur is aan de optische Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer:

All in all the Logitech WheelMouse is an excellent piece of hardware. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's tired of cleaning out dirty mouse balls. Its responsefullness is far superior to the Intellimouse Explorer; the documentation was both well written and comprehensive; and it fits in my small hands. Forrester analist Lars Godell stelt dat World Online slechts te redden is met de hulp van een grote telco, zoals Vodafone. Tiscali en World Online hebben een groot telecombedrijf als partner nodig, met een mobiel en/of vast net waarmee voordelen te behalen zijn. Beide partijen richten zich wel meer op telecom, maar ontberen (nu nog) infrastructuur.

Via Ars Technica kwam ik bij dit artikel van Digital Photography Review over de Hitachi DZ-MV100 DVD-RAM camcorder. De DZ-MV100 beschikt over een 1,1 megapixel CCD en een 12X zoom lens. Films worden in MPEG-2 formaat opgeslagen op een 8cm DVD-RAM schijfje met een capaciteit van 2,92GB. Naast het verwerken van bewegende beelden kan de camera ook foto's opslaan in een resolutie van 1280 bij 960 pixels:

Not strictly digital photography news, but more interesting is the technology used and it's possibilities. Hitachi announced (back in June actually) the DZ-MV100 as a first of a kind DVD-RAM camcorder, features a 1.1 megapixel CCD has a 12x optical zoom lens and records in MPEG-2 format directly onto 8 cm 2.92 GB DVD-RAM discs it's also capable of 1280 x 960 stills recorded in JPEG format and has USB connectivity. Interesting technology when viewed alongside Sony's recent announcement of the MVC-CD1000 and interesting potential in a "Wallet" type device.

Looks like we're going to be seeing more and more portable CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-RAM devices exploiting smaller disc formats, while I'm not sure they have a place inside a digital still camera they are certainly the way forward for digital video and I'd like to see the technology implemented in a device similar to the Digital Wallet we've heard so much about recently.

Constellation 3D heeft in een press release aangekondigd dat samples van hun FMD/C drives (Fluorescent Multilayer Disc & Cards) in januari 2001 beschikbaar komen. AMD Zone kreeg van Kryotech wat info toegestuurd over de nieuwe supergekoelde Kryotech Thunderbird barebones, die deze maand in beperkte hoeveelheden op de markt komen. In eerste instantie mogen deze systemen op een snelheid van 1,25GHz rondtuffen, later wordt dat opgevoerd naar anderhalve Gigahertz. Kryotech heeft hun koelsysteem grotendeels opnieuw ontworpen, waardoor het onder andere eenvoudiger wordt om een processor upgrade uit te voeren:

1. A totally redesigned evaporator that is more advanced and more efficient than any of our previous evaporators.

2. New diagnostic firmware and control electronics.

3. Fan control that will not only help system performance but will also reduce system noise.

4. A new Socket A KryoCavity that provides easier access to the processor for upgrade purposes yet maintains KryoTech's strict standards of quality and 100% condensation-free operation.

Elizabeth Conner van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een artikeltje gepost over de DRAM marktontwikkelingen, die Semico voor de komende 4 jaar heeft voorspelt. De belangrijkste ontwikkeling is de sterk groei van de communicatie industrie. Volgens Semico zal de communicatie industrie in 2004 24% van de DRAM taart op eten, terwijl dat vorig jaar nog maar 9% was. Het marktaandeel van DDR SDRAM stijgt volgens de voorspellingen van Semico in 2002 naar 18%. Voor Rambus is nauwelijks plaats weggelegd, de produktie van RDRAMs bestrijkt in 2002 slechts 2% van de totale markt. Het goede nieuws is dat er door uitbreiding van produktiecapaciteit vanaf 2002 weer een situatie van overcapaciteit zal ontstaan:

The DRAM revenue forecast for 2000 is $31.1 Billion, up $10 Billion from last year. Semico expects another $15 Billion increase for 2001, but thinks that the market will stagnate in 2002 due to an overcapacity situation. When DRAM manufacturers switch their production lines from 8" wafers to 12" wafers during 2001 the DRAM supply will increase dramatically and flood the market.

As far as the DRAM types are concerned Semico still believes that SDRAM will be the winner in 2002. Apparently over 50 % of all memory shipments are going to be SDRAM components, followed by DDR SDRAM (about 18 %), EDO DRAM (about 2 %) and RDRAM (less than 2 %).

According to Semico Research Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) plays no significant role in the memory market in 2002. This analysis is based on current Rambus designs for high-end PCs, workstations and servers.
