BXBoards heeft een review gepost van de 10 speed Shuttle Spacewandelaar. Deze DVD drive maakt gebruik van de welbekende ATA33 interface en heeft een 512KB buffer. De software bundel bestaat uit het door velen gewaardeerde CyberLink PowerDVD. De performance van de Shuttle DVD bleek redelijk te zijn, hoewel de drive onder Windows 2000 wel een ongewenst vreemd effect op de boottijd had. Deze nam toe met 2 minuten!

This is a very nice product from Shuttle. The software bundle in the form of PowerDVD is excellent, so its very easy to get DVD movies up and running with this package.

On benchmarks, the drive is a strange beast. It is generally only an average performer as a CD drive, and the benchmarks are nothing to boast about. Nevertheless, the drive is fast enough in real world use, and in all honesty, with the huge increase in hard drive space, and tumbling hard drive prices, most CD/DVD drives get sporadic use anyway, as most users opt for maximum installations, hard drive space willing.

Under Windows 2000, the drive can have a strange effect on loading times - when this test unit was connected as a Secondary Master device, Windows 2000 load time increased by almost 2 minutes! This behaviour was observed on two very different systems - my own personal Dual Celeron 300a Shuttle Hot 649a workhorse, and on an Abit BX6-2 system. This is almost certainly a firmware issue, and one Shuttle would be well advised to ask their OEM manufacturing partners to look into urgently.

SolarHost's high-density solar panels convert sunlight to electricity for its computer servers and facility. Degaussing is essentially the same process that the monitor goes through during startup, except that the monitor is fully operational during the process. If you are having problems with your monitor after extended use (greater than usual flickering, discoloration of some areas, misc. offset pixels, etc.), degaussing your monitor might just fix it for you. Note: There is basically no reason to degauss your monitor daily, or probably even weekly. Don't degauss too often!

Moire is in reference to certain kinds of distortion that should only ever effect improperly shielded monitors. If you are having problems with it and your monitor is fairly new, you should probably move, because you probably have a high voltage wire running through your house creating EM interference. Seriously though, moire patterns are created by the misalignment of the cathode ray onto the filaments that create the image. If you are having trouble with wavy lines on the screen, or a particularly fuzzy image (particularly at high resolutions), you may find it to your benefit to tweak these settings a bit. Most people can probably leave them alone though. These patterns can also be removed by using the sharpness setting (on less expensive monitors).

Recall, as you might have guessed, simply resets the monitor to its defaults. 'Nuff said.

Bij C|NET hebben ze een blik geworpen op Preview Release 2 van Netscape 6.0 die je hier kunt neerladen. Over het algemeen werd deze nieuwe versie goed ontvangen; hij is duidelijk sneller dan zijn voorgangers en heeft een aantal leuke en handige features meegekregen. Er zijn echter nog wel een aantal zaken waar hard aan gewerkt moet worden voordat de final versie eind dit jaar uit zal komen. Onverwachte crashes zijn nog steeds aanwezig en opstarten lijkt eeuwig te duren:

Netscape 6 Preview Release 2 is a little less preview-ish than PR1. But we still don't recommend replacing your current browser with it yet. This release didn't crash on our test machines quite as often as PR1, but it still crashed at unexpected times, such as when we tried to open the Preferences dialog box. However, at least the crashes were confined to the app itself and never brought down the operating system.

Thankfully, PR2 corrects some of the installation problems we saw in PR1. We were able to install Java 2 on all of our test machines, for instance (PR1 failed on a couple Windows 98 machines). However, starting Netscape 6 is an exercise in patience. It's just about the slowest-loading program we've ever seen, though this latest release seems a tad faster than PR1. There's still a good deal of performance tuning ahead for Netscape engineers--or at least we hope there is.

Nonetheless, we were impressed by what we saw. Netscape 6 has lots of promise. The Gecko rendering engine is fast and far more standards compliant than its predecessor. The email application has a solid feature set, including innovative integration with Netscape's and AOL's instant messengers. And security features such as the Cookie Manager and encrypted password storage will help make Web surfing safer and more secure.

But Netscape does have a problem. With all of these public preview releases, the company has tipped its hand and may have given Microsoft a head start on features to include in Internet Explorer 6. The final Netscape release is not planned until much later this year--probably the end of the year--so the Redmond folks will have plenty of time to catch up. Between now and then, Netscape will have to work hard to improve its browser's stability and performance and to stay one step ahead of Microsoft in the features war.

The ES2841 and ES2842 include a PCI interface, V.90 modem codec, 802.3u Ethernet MAC, and an MII interface. ES2841 also integrates a low-voltage silicon DAA circuit and is used with the ES2840 high-voltage silicon DAA companion chip. ES2842 uses an external transformer DAA. By connecting a HomePNA 1.0 PHY to the MII output, ES2841/ES2842 can be used in V.90 modem and HomePNA 1.0 applications.
The ES2841 and ES2842 are each packaged in 128-pin LQFP package, requiring 3.3V digital and 5V analog power supplies. OEM pricing for the ES2841, ES2840 and ES2831 for V.90 software mode and 10/100 Ethernet solution is $25.00 at 10,000-piece quantities. Production samples and mini-PCI and PCI riser card reference designs are currently available.

OEM's zullen zeker blij zijn met dit nieuws maar de vraag blijft of hiermee de (brakke ) AMR/CNR softmodems etc uitgebannen gaan worden. Voor Tweakers zal deze ontwikkeling waarschijnlijk geen grote impact hebben.

Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral heeft ditmaal een review van de nieuwe 1.13GHz Pentium III. De geteste Intel processor was multiplier locked op 8.5 en dus geen "Engineering" of "Evaluation Sample" zoals meestal gebruikt werd in eerdere reviews. Om de processor op deze snelheid te kunnen laten draaien heeft Intel wel gekozen om de core van 1.8V te voorzien. Er waren geen stabiliteits problemen tijdens het testen. De warmteproduktie van de processor leek mee te vallen. Hoewel er gebruik werd gemaakt van een normale heatsink (wel van koper) kwam de temperatuur niet boven de 50 graden.

In summary, Intel again proved to be able to take its P6 core a step further, upping the frequency to 1.13 GHz, another milestone that proves the scalability of the P6 architecture. It's designed a CPU and an architecture that combines the best of all previous generations, implementing support for the SIMD instructions, one-die L2 cache, MMX, as well as a 256-bit data path to the L2 cache and numerous other features. Even though these 1.13 GHz Pentium IIIs are going to be hard to come by, they represent the pinnacle of performance and are the fastest x86 processors on the market.

Whether you really need all that computing power is a different story though, as for all but the most strenuous applications a 700 or 800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon will be more than sufficient, and the 1.13 GHz is simply overkill. If you take its memory interleaving into consideration, which has a negative effect on performance when the multiplier increases, it is only a tad faster than the 866 MHz Pentium III for most applications. Only programs that fit nicely into the 1.13 GHz Pentium III’s on-die cache or that are FPU intensive will really benefit from the increased clockspeed.

Although overall we were impressed by the 1.13 GHz Pentium III’s performance, quite frankly it is just another speed grade and for the real architectural and clock-for-clock improvements we must wait for the introduction of the Pentium IV. If you really want the fastest x86 processor today then the 1.13 GHz Pentium III may be for you, but to be honest we’d recommend waiting for the Pentium IV.

Systemlogic heeft een eenvoudig doch effectief truukje online gezet waarmee fervente overclockers hun videokaart en AGP bus net wat stabieler kunnen krijgen. De huidige nieuwe videokaarten trekken aardig wat sap weg van de AGP bus dat onder andere voor de koeling gebruikt wordt. Door de fan op het moederbord aan te sluiten in plaats van op de grafische kaart blijft er wat meer stroom over voor de kaart zelf.

Having trouble getting full stability with your AGP bus overclocked? Well here's a trick that just might help you out. The only real requirement is that you have an AGP card with a fan plugged into the AGP card itself.

[...]The trick is to use power from the motherboard (or PSU) instead of from the card. The reason is two-fold, to allow the card to use all the power from the AGP slot (as the power coming from the AGP slot is limited) and by removing a dc motor (the fan motor) from the same electric line as the card. You see a DC motor introduces 'ripples' to the line, the same line which is used by the card, by removing the DC motor from the line you improve the quality of the current used by the card, hence also improving stability of the card.

Dutchcelebrities.com, Babes.nl, Vrouwen.com, Beroemdheden.nl en Dutch Image Galleries hebben al rekeningen mogen ontvangen oplopend tot Fl 16.000 gulden voor het plaatsen van slechts enkele foto's waar copyright op berust:

Kelvin Huizing, webmaster van Dutchcelebrities.com, is een van de 'getroffenen'. Op zijn site stonden meer dan 2500 foto's van 125 Nederlandse beroemdheden van vrouwelijke kunne. Vorige maand ontving Huizing ineens een rekening van een fotograaf voor het plaatsen van vijf foto's van zijn hand. Student Huizing moest tot zijn verbazing 12.000 gulden betalen.

Huizing was naar eigen zeggen niet op de hoogte van copyrightregels op internet. Na overleg met advocaten van de rechtswinkel besloot hij uiteindelijk maar te betalen. "Ik heb het geld met de grootste moeite bij elkaar gekregen door veel te lenen van familie", aldus Huizing. Hierna was de ellende voor de jeugdige webmaster nog niet voorbij.

Een andere fotograaf kwam met een rekening van 16.000 gulden voor zeven foto's. Huizing heeft inmiddels een flinke kater aan zijn hobbyproject overgehouden: "Feit is dat mijn bankrekening leeg is en dat ik nog vele schulden heb lopen. Ook heeft het hele akkefietje me vele slapeloze nachten bezorgd en slechte resultaten in mijn laatste trimester op school."

Ook andere webmasters – onder meer van Babes.nl, Vrouwen.com, Beroemdheden.nl en Dutch Image Galleries – hebben inmiddels rekeningen ontvangen. Sommigen betalen deze, anderen nemen het risico en wachten eventuele gerechtelijke stappen af.

Een blije dag voor SCSI aanhangers, want Pioneer Europe heeft zojuist aangekondigd dat zij de nieuwe DVD-U04S en DVD-304S 10X DVD-ROM SCSI drive hebben gereleased. Tot dusver gingen de SCSI drives van Pioneer niet verder dan 6X, wat toch wel een aanslag was op de trots van de SCSI fanaat. Ordinaire IDE drives gaan namelijk al geruime tijd tot 16 speed:

Betanews bericht dat de final van SQL Server 2000 gisteren in produktie is gegaan (Released to Manufacturers). SQL Server 2000 is het eerste produkt in Microsoft's nieuwe .NET server familie:

Microsoft has announced that SQL Server 2000 was released to manufacturers today. According to the press release, some customers have been producing the program as part of an early adoption program for the newest software. SQL Server 2000 is the first in the .NET server family, and will serve as the backbone for future .Net software releases. Paul Flessner, vice president of .NET enterprise servers at Microsoft said "SQL Server 2000 has received unprecedented quality-assurance testing."

JC meldt dat de release van de Pentium 4 mogelijk met 8 weken is vertraagd. De reden zou zijn dat de Pentium 4 op dit moment nog niet de beoogde kloksnelheden van rond de 1,3GHz bereikt. De huidige samples komen niet verder dan 900MHz, aldus de vage bron van JC. Voor de duidelijkheid: het gaat hier om een vaag gerucht, dat met een behoorlijke vrachtlading zout genomen dient te worden:

Four days ago, I was contacted by a nice fellow with some information about Intel's x86 roadmap. Please treat this with lots of salt, as there is no way that I can back up any of this (eg, treat this as a rumour). On Wednesday, allegedly, OEMs were informed that the Pentium 4 introduction will be delayed for a period of eight weeks. This will apparently not affect the "2000 H2" target for announcement -- it's more a matter of the intro moving from late Q3 to mid Q4 or from early Q4 to late Q4; the specific date details I do not have.

Why? What's the reason for this supposed delay? Well, difficulty in meeting frequency targets was hinted (something about test samples being limited to 0.90GHz, which sorta keeps in line with the alleged 0.80GHz samples hanging about a couple months ago, but makes no sense given the intro speed targets), but is not substantiated enough for my taste. However, what did sound interesting was a note that the P4 test sample systems (allegedly) were as of last week having difficulties booting primary master IDE devices.

But I didn't want to completely depress you. The flip side of this rumour is that the announced speed grades may be increased to 1.50GHz. This is, of course, up from 1.40GHz.
