Elizabeth Connor van Tom's Hardware Guide is bij de PC Expo op bezoek geweest en heeft daar een verslagje over geschreven. De PC Expo stond in het teken van de PDA's en notebooks, en daar gaat dus ook het grootste gedeelte van het verslag over.

So, now we have expansion modules in form of the SD Card (Palm), Memory Stick (Sony), Springboard (Visor), and Compact Flash (TGRPro). All this gets pretty confusing for consumers, and of course the different technologies are completely incompatible. Haven't these companies learned anything from the past? Proprietary standards are never a good idea. Just image this kind of thing had happened in the PC world. Major PC manufacturers like Compaq, Dell, Gateway and others decided to each use a floppy drive that is incompatible with the drives of other manufacturers. Well, you could not just simply copy a file to a floppy, take it to your friends' house and copy it on his or her machine - unless it is the same brand. Even Apple decided at one point that it would be a good idea for Macs to be able to read discs that had been formatted on a PC... If handheld systems, and that also includes cell phones, MP3 players, and similar devices, all used the same expansion standard, it would be possible to share peripherals among them. Intel now seems to get slightly nervous about Transmeta, because just a few days before the PC Expo, Intel introduced two special low-power processors for notebooks: a 600 MHz mobile Pentium III, and a 500 MHz mobile Celeron with SpeedStep, Intel's power management technology. According to Intel, the processors consume between 1 and 2 Watts. But as the German computer magazine c't pointed out in their recent issue 14/2000, it all depends on how you actually measure the power consumption. Intel based their measurements on a scenario called 'Average Power', where the processor (maximum power consumption 8.1 Watts at 500 MHz and 1.1 Volts) is in sleep mode for 80 to 95 percent of the time. Transmeta on the other hand lets the Crusoe TM5400 play MP3, and it still only consumes only 1 W (or 1.8 Watts for DVD playback) - including the Northbridge. In case of the Intel processors, the Northbridge alone eats up 2 W (BX chipset). Taken all that into account, Intel's mobile Pentium III should consume about 6 Watts while playing MP3 - about six times as much as Transmeta's Crusoe. Al eerder berichtten wij dat het mogelijk was om met enkele BIOS updates de PC te laten denken (tenminste onder Win2k) dat je een professionele nVidia Quadro had in plaats van een GeForce256. Er is kennelijk nog een andere manier om dat te doen, en dit keer niet alleen onder Win2k. Door een aantal dingetjes aan elkaar te solderen wordt de GeForce256 (in dit geval een ChainTech) als Quadro herkend. Dit wordt in het Engels geschreven op deze hele vage site. Deze site is weer een vertaling van deze site, die nog veel waziger is (als je geen Chinees kan lezen, tenminste). Is er een Chinees in de buurt die even een goede vertaling kan leveren?

Kyle van HardOCP heeft een stukkie info geschreven over de Abit KT7 Socket A moederbord waarvan je eerder vandaag al de press release kon lezen. Waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste feature van deze KT133 plank is de mogelijk om de multiplier te unlocken zoals de Asus A7V dat ook kan. De KT7 heeft volgens Kyle een release date van midden augustus gevolgd door een ATA-100 RAID versie in september. Hieronder de info en een nudie van dit bordje:

The KT7 Socket A board will in fact have the ability to change the multiplier of a TBird or Duron.

As it is planned now, the KT133 chipset will be actively cooled. This is one thing we did touch on in the MSI Socket A Review. The KT133 gets VERY HOT.

This is top-secret stuff here, but it seems also that the ABIT KT7 will be possibly more UPGRADE FRIENDLY down the road. That is all I can say on that, but keep that in the back of your mind when you go to purchase...  We should be able to talk about this more when the board gets to the shelves.

The KT7 should be out on the shelves by mid-August with a ATA100/RAID version sometime in September.  More free RAID guys!!

iXBT Labs heeft een flinke lap tekst online gezet over ATA-100. Ze komen tot de niet zo verassende conclusie dat ATA-100 in net een stukje sneller is dan ATA-66, en dat ATA-66 weer net een stukje sneller is dan ATA-33 (was dit een open deur, of een open deur?). ATA-100 mag dan het snelste zijn maar de verschillen met ATA-66 zijn erg minimaal en rechvaardigen dan ook geen upgrade van ATA-66 naar ATA-100, zelfs een upgrade van ATA-33 naar ATA-100 is volgens iXBT Labs overbodig:

These results once again prove our point expressed above. Testing hard disk drives is a nice and illustrative thing, of course. However, we also wanted to take a look at the influence of ATA/100 interface on the overall system performance and hence tested our systems with Content Creation Winstone2000. the results turned out practically the same for all interfaces. The largest difference mad only 0.1 point that's why we made up our mind not to overload our article with a row of columns of the same size.

[...] Well, as you see, there is no cause for concern even if you have ATA/33 interface and if you don't work with huge audio and video files. As for ATA/66, it is enough for your today's needs as well. And as far as ATA/100 is concerned, of course it provides a certain performance gain compared to ATA/66. However, the today's hard drives are too slow to make this gain a significant argument in favor of ATA/100 interface. But certainly every innovation is always aimed at the future rather than at the present. Everything keeps developing and very soon hard disk drives may appear much faster rotating at 10,000rpm, for instance, or even more. This is exactly when the new interface will manage to show off.

Besides, we have to admit that the IDE controller in i815E proved more efficient than that by VIA. Maybe it is the drivers, which are the reason of this success, and maybe it's simply the hardware quality. Anyway, let's wait for the promised ATA/100 support in VIA South Bridge. And then we'll see, who is the best…

De joint venture tussen S3 en VIA is weer even van de baan. De Taiwanese regering moet nog haar goedkeuring verlenen hieraan, en dit schijnt nog niet helemaal te lukken door veranderingen in de regering:

According to a statement released by S3 (stock: SIII), Santa Clara, Calif., changes in Taiwan's government have led to delays in regulatory approval of S3-Via, the joint venture between the two companies.

At press time, it was unclear whether the delays meant a simple bureaucratic hurdle, or if the future of the joint venture was in jeopardy.

Both companies portrayed the delay as minor.

The joint venture was expected to be complete by the end of June, and U.S. government regulations required S3 to publicly note the delay.

In de Verenigde Staten is de joint venture al wel goedgekeurd.

Sony is van plan eind dit jaar een nieuw type audio CD op de markt te brengen die wederom niet te kopiëren zo moeten zijn. De schijfjes zullen wel gewoon af te draaien zijn in onze CD-ROM spelers. Eerdere pogingen door BMG om audio's CD's van een beveiliging te voorzien mislukte doordat ze vaak ook niet eens gelezen konden worden. Sony wil dit in ieder geval verbeteren. Hier een plak uit dit bericht van WebWereld:

De Volkskrant meldt vandaag dat Sony de beveiligde audio CD's deze herfst op handen wil brengen. Volgens Jan-Willem Volbeda – marketing manager van Sony Music Media – is deze berichtgeving echter nogal voorbarig. "Eerst moeten de tests worden afgerond. Dat zal eind augustus, begin september zijn. Pas daarna denken we aan een introductie."

Ook de berichtgeving over het feit dat de nieuwe schijfjes niet meer door de CD-ROM-drive van de computer kunnen worden gelezen, wijst Volbeda naar het rijk der fabelen. "Natuurlijk kunnen beveiligde schijfjes nog steeds op de PC worden afgespeeld, ze kunnen alleen niet meer worden gekopieerd, als het goed is."

[...] Via ronkende persberichten werd melding gemaakt dat de nieuwste CD van Herman Brood of Marco Borsato onmogelijk te dupliceren zou zijn. Niets bleek minder waar. Binnen enkele uren stond een omzeiling al op internet. De beveiliging bleek dus weinig voor te stellen. De bescherming van Sony moet beter zijn, al heeft Volbeda niet de illusie dat het systeem voor altijd waterdicht zal zijn. "Het is slechts een volgende stap."

Thresh's FiringSquad verblijdt ons met een review van de Midiland S4/7100 5.1 speakerset bestaande uit 5 satellites en een subwoofer. Vanwege de hoge kwaliteit die je krijgt voor een relatief lage prijs is dit setje een van de meest gevraagde op het net:

Tspawn schrijft dat er bij VIA Hardware een guide is neergemikt over het tweaken van de memory performance op VIA Apollo Pro based moederborden. Het artikel legt uit hoe je met behulp van de proggies WPCREDIT en WPREST de performance van een BX plank kan evenaren:

For people who like to take things into their own hands and are tired of waiting for motherboard manufactures to release bios updates; WPCREDIT and WPCRSET are the answer. The memory scores that we obtained offer a very nice memory performance increase and put an end to the title of "Poor Memory Performer" that has tagged the VIA Apollo Pro chipset since its release. These tweaks worked on this particular setup, but I have used the same tweaks on several other setups with similar results. The big tweak here is the 4-way memory interleaving. A few motherboard manufactures have released bios revisions that enable 4-way so your performance gains may not be as huge as those I have shown. For the thousands of other users that do not have 4-way memory interleaving this could be the answer you are looking for. I want to thank H-Oda for writing these two wonderful utilities as well as the many other utilities they have written. WPCREDIT can be used for more than just memory tweaking too. Ortep schrijft dat de UMTS veiling van de Nederlandse staat dreigt te mislukken. Minister Zalm had zich al rijk gerekend, er werd verwacht dat de veilig zo'n 20 miljard gulden zou opbrengen. Zoals het er nu uitziet, gaat dit niet gebeuren: er zijn nu nog maar 6 van de 8 gegadigden over die één van de vijf UMTS frequenties willen hebben. Je zult begrijpen dat 6 gegadigden voor 5 frequenties niet echt de ideale verhouding is om veel betaald te krijgen voor de frequenties, en het zou wel eens helemaal mis kunnen gaan als Versatel bij een van de andere 5 mobiele aanbieders als partner kan aansluiten:

Indien Versatel bij een van de 5 huidige mobiele aanbieders in een vroeg stadium als partner kan aansluiten, dan is het gebeurd met de veiling. De overheid verliest dan het door haar zelf ingezette pokerspel. De site van het ministerie gaf vanmorgen alvast maar een flinke foutmelding.

Maar wie wil Versatel erbij hebben. Versatel staat niet bekend als een vriendelijk bedrijf waarmee het goed kersen eten is. De onderneming ontwikkelt hard, zonder scrupules, en voelt niets voor een polder-achtig regelen van zaken.

[...] Dutchtone is van France Telecom. De Fransen zitten in vaste infrastructuur met Casema en bieden vaste telefonie aan zonder infrastructuur met Global One. In dit bericht van WebWereld valt te lezen dat KPN nog dit jaar het '06760' inbelnummer voor internet wil introduceren; er wordt een datum van 1 oktober genoemd. Groot voordeel van het nieuwe nummer is dat providers nu zelf de tarieven ervan kunnen bepalen. Het is de bedoeling dat na de introductie ook flat-rate diensten geïntroduceerd worden:

KPN wilde de loskoppeling van internet en telefonie, die de verstopping van het telefoonnetwerk moet oplossen, aanvankelijk nog voor de zomer invoeren, maar volgens Hueber hebben administratieve procedures met toezichthouder Opta en het ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat de zaak vertraagd.

Inmiddels is dat allemaal geregeld. "Het is puur nog een kwestie van techniek voor we beginnen", zo zei Hueber. Als '06760' is ingevoerd, kan ook het KPN-tarief, dat nu gelijk is voor internet en bellen, worden losgelaten. Providers zouden dan zelf tarieven kunnen bepalen, waardoor inbellen goedkoper kan worden.

Pas na '06760' wil KPN ook flat rate-diensten gaan aanbieden met haar internetproviders Planet Internet en XS4ALL. "Wij willen daarmee wachten tot na de loskoppeling. Het heeft geen zin om een apart, modern netwerk voor internet aan te leggen om de drukte op het telefoonnetwerk op te lossen, en dan dat telefoonnet nog eens verder te belasten met flat rate-internetverkeer", aldus Hueber.

Opera Software heeft de volledige versie van het Opera 3.62 browsertje voor EPOC handhelds gereleased. De browser heeft ondersteuning voor HTML 3.2, 128-bit encryptie, SSL2, SSL3, TLS 1.0, Java applets, Javascript 1.1 en CSS1. Aan de EPOC versie van Opera 4.0 wordt inmiddels gewerkt. Eerder dit jaar werd al bekend gemaakt dat Psion Opera als standaard browser gaat leveren op de Series7 en netBook:

News.com heeft een artikel gepost over de UltraBand technologie van Advent Networks, waarover je al meer hebt kunnen lezen in deze feature van Mark. UltraBand maakt het mogelijk om de bandbreedte op de kabel te verhogen naar 40Mbit per aansluiting. Om de technologie in gebruik te nemen moet er op de kabel echter wel meer capaciteit worden vrijgemaakt voor internet diensten, wat een probleem kan zijn voor kabel exploitanten en grote TV stations die over een eigen kabelnetwerk beschikken. Als UltraBand daadwerkelijk in de praktijk toegepast gaat worden, dan zal waarschijnlijk het eerst gebeuren bij de 'overbuilders', kabel bedrijven die hun bestaande netwerk vervangen met nieuwe glasvezel kabels. Oude netwerken zijn niet snel genoeg om bij veel aansluitingen voldoende bandbreedte aan de voordeur af te leveren:

[...] But many analysts say they are cautiously optimistic that the company can follow through on its promises.

[...] Because Advent's technology requires cable operators to reserve more network capacity for Internet traffic rather than additional cable TV channels, the company is initially targeting competitive cable "overbuilders" that have newer, high-capacity systems. IBM, Intel en Microsoft hebben een nieuwe database snelheidsrecord gebroken in de TPC-C benchmark van het Transaction Processing Performance Council. Een IBM Netfinity 8500R cluster van 32 nodes behaalde een resultaat van 440.879 transacties per minuut. De machines waren elk uitgerust met vier 700MHz PIII Xeon processors, 4Gig RAM en een 9GB harddisk. Als besturingsysteem diende Windows 2000 Advanced Server met IBM's DB2 als database. Als jij ook zo'n config op je zolderkamer wil hebben, moet je nog wel ff doorwerken: het hele ding kost een lieve 14 miljoen dollar :

Beachtlich sind nicht nur die 440.879 erreichten Transaktionen pro Minute, die mehr als dreimal so hoch liegen wie die des bisherigen Rekordhalters, sondern auch das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis von 32 US-Dollar pro tpmC, das deutlich besser ist als bei den bisherigen Rekordhaltern – der Kaufpreis der getesteten Konfiguration fällt mit 14 Millionen US-Dollar allerdings auch doppelt so hoch aus.

What's New?

3-Phase Power Solution
The last thing you need in your system is excess heat, or the stability and CPU lifespan issues that go with it. On the KT7, ABIT has gone a step further in preventing extra heat: A six MOSFE transistor set for a “3-Phase Power Solution.” These six transistors dissipate heat more effectively than the four transistor (“2-Phase”) solution found on most other Socket A motherboards. Additionally, should future Thunderbirds require higher amperage, the KT7 will address power and heat issues better than boards with 2-phase solutions.

Multi I/O Functions
The KT7 has 2 on board Bus Master IDE Ports supporting UDMA 33/66 as well as 6 PCI slots and 1 ISA slot for maximum upgradability. ABIT has added the sixth PCI slot to make the KT7 the most expandable and upgradeable board in its class. In addition to the normal serial and parallel ports the KT7 has 2 USB ports, plus an extra header for 2 extra USB channels. Miscellaneous features include hardware monitoring, built-in Wake on LAN, Wake on Ring, and IrDA TX/RX headers. CPU temperature monitoring is performed by a thermistor located directly below the processor.

Zoals je ziet voor 'alle socket A Athlons, waaronder de Tbird en de Duron'... Vraag me eigenlijk af welke cpu's ze verder nog in gedachten hadden, maargoed... In iedergeval lijkt de vraag van de lezer beantwoord... Ja, ABIT komt met zo'n moederbord, en Ja, alle bekende foefjes van Abit zitten er op om de leukste dingetjes te knutselen op de CPU's die deze plank gaat kunnen doen. En wederom hebben ze die AMR onzin er af gekegeld... halleluja! We wachten met spanning op de prestaties van het bord.

Vrijwel alle grote fabrikanten van hardware brengen eens in de zoveel tijd een zogenaamde "roadmap" uit, waarin ze aangeven wat ze het komende jaar gaan doen. Meestal zijn die dingen "confidential" maar soms lekt er ook wel eens eentje uit. Daar kunnen sites als Tweakers.net dan weer een leuk artikeltje over schrijven.

Zo ook deze keer, viavia kreeg ik een roadmap van GigaByte in mijn mailbox. Op zich stonden er niet echt schokkende dingen in: de komende maanden verschijnt er een flink aantal nieuwe i815E/i820E moederborden en er komen in het vierde kwartaal planken met de nieuwe AMD 760-chipset (met ondersteuning voor PC266 DDR-SDRam)
Verder staan er voor de "high-end"markt maar liefst 6 dual-socket 370 moederborden op de planning, waarvan 3 met VIA 694x chipset, 2 met Serverworks Serverset III en 1 met de nieuwe VIA Pro266 chipset.

Maar wat mij opviel was een processor roadmapje dat ook opgenomen was. Hierin werden niet alleen de inmiddels bekende Willamette/Pentium 4 (in geel/lichtgroen) en nieuwe typen Pentium III (in paars voor Slot1 en groen voor FC-PGA) genoemd, maar ook een nieuwe doorontwikkelde Pentium III met de codenaam "Tualatin"

Uit de gebruikte kleuren maak ik op dat deze nieuwe processor een directe opvolger wordt van de bijna net zo mysterieuze Coppermine-LV (Low Voltage? Mogelijk een 0.13 micron versie van de Coppermine?), en dus nog steeds gebaseerd is op de aloude P6-core. Tot nu toe werd aangenomen dat Intel met de release van de Willamette de P6-core met pensioen zou sturen, in ieder geval voor de high-end markt.
Over de specificaties van deze processor kan verder alleen nog maar gespeculeerd worden: de snelheid zal waarschijnlijk boven de 1,2 GHz liggen en aangenomen mag worden dat er een 0.13 micron procede gebruikt wordt. Misschien wordt al bij de Coppermine-LV koper-interconnect techniek geintroduceerd, en wordt dit doorgezet in de Tualatin.

Verder valt op in de roadmap dat de Celeron (blauw) niet verder wordt ontwikkeld: de overgang naar een 100 MHz FSB (die eigenlijk al een jaar geleden had moeten plaatsvinden) is blijkbaar geheel afgevoerd. De kloksnelheid loopt slechts tergend langzaam op naar 800 MHz in het eerste kwartaal van 2001. Des te meer redenen om aan te nemen dat Intel de Celeron naar de eeuwige jachtvelden gaat sturen, om vervolgens de Pentium III en evt. opvolgers meer low-end te maken. In de roadmap is dat echter niet terug te vinden: de Tualatin wordt hoger ingezet dan de PIII en de Coppermine-LV. Hierdoor valt er een enorm gat tussen de Pentium III (eind dit jaar op ongeveer 1,2 GHz) en de Celeron (hooguit 800 MHz)
De echte low-end markt wordt bediend door de Timna (een super-geïntegreerde, op de Celeron gebaseerde processor waarbij een groot deel van de chipset is meegebakken in de CPU)

AMD

De AMD-roadmap is in ieder geval een stuk eenvoudiger: de "oude" Slot-A Athlon (donkergroen) wordt niet verder ontwikkeld, hoewel er voor september nog een 1,1 GHz versie op stapel staat.
De Socket-462 processors (licht-oranje) zoals de Thunderbird-Athlon en de Duron rollen rustig door naar hogere kloksnelheden.

In het derde kwartaal (september) wordt een 1,1 GHz versie van de Thunderbird met 266 MHz bus gereleased, tegen die tijd moeten er ook moederborden beschikbaar zijn. De snelheid van de Duron klimt ook langzaam op naar 750+ MHz.

Conclusie

Over het algemeen is er de komende maanden weinig vuurwerk te verwachten op processorvlak: AMD heeft z'n grote releases (T-bird, Duron) gehad en gaat nu de kloksnelheid rustig omhoogschroeven. Intel released de Willamette die een torenhoge kloksnelheid heeft (1,3-1,4 GHz) maar die zal niet al te snel terug te vinden zijn in het gemiddelde consumentensysteem.
Verder gaat ook Intel gewoon door met het opkrikken van de snelheid van Celeron en Pentium III.

Pas tegen het eind van dit jaar kunnen we weer wat actie zien: er staat dan een aantal nieuwe modellen van de Pentium III (Coppermine-LV, Tualatin) op stapel en ook de Athlon zal tegen die tijd gemakkelijk over de 1,1 GHz heen daveren. Het is de bedoeling dat de Willamette/Pentium 4 dan al meer dan anderhalve GHz op de klok heeft staan.

Oracle opperhoofd Larry Ellison heeft gisteren de nieuwe network appliance van Oracle-spinoff New Internet Computer Co. geïntroduceerd. Het apparaat borduurt voort op het concept van de geflopte Netwerk Computer, een harddisk is men derhalve ook vergeten. De enige drive die er in een apparaat zit is een CD-ROM speler, waar Linux vanaf gedraaid wordt. De prijs van de New Internet Computer - 199 dollar exclusief monitor- is volgens analisten te hoog om de doos een interessant alternatief te maken voor goedkope PC's:

The unit, sold by Oracle spinoff New Internet Computer Co. (NICC), lacks a hard drive or the Windows operating system from arch-rival Microsoft. The sleek black unit is powered by a Pentium-compatible chip from Cyrix, and its lone drive is a CD-ROM that is used to run the Linux-based operating system.

[...] NICC said it plans to start selling the units next week from its Web site. The company said in May that it would begin selling the unit for the education market. The NIC costs $199 or $328 with a monitor.

[...] ARS analyst Matt Sargent said the cost is still too high for many low-income households that don't yet have a PC.

"That's going to work against these guys," Sargent said. "They really need to be in the $200 range (monitor included). If not, (consumers) will spend a few hundred dollars more and get a PC."

In navolging van 3dfx heeft ook nVidia aangekondigd dat zij de Mac markt willen betreden. De eerste nVidia chip die Mac-compatible wordt gemaakt is de mid-range GeForce2 MX, later volgen ook de high-end chips. ATi kan zich alvast voorbereiden op een hevige battle rond zijn positie van premier Apple graphics supplier:

Competition in the Mac graphics chip world is heating up, with current graphics chip darling Nvidia saying it will shift its attention to the market.

Nvidia is starting to promote its latest chip, the GeForce2 MX, for use in Macintoshes. Although it can be used in PCs, the chip is compatible with Macs, a first for Nvidia.

"We've been competing with others behind the scenes for years," said ATI Macintosh product manager Deanna Perkins. "Although it may seem this way, we don't have any exclusive deals. We won all of our contracts on an individual basis."

He said the company is not planning to announce any products at Macworld and that some work remains to bring an actual Mac product to market. "When we enter it, we plan to enter it in a big way," he said.

hjs meldt dat Anandtech nu ook een onderzoekje heeft gemaakt betreffende de GeForce2 FSAA performance met de 5.30 Detonator drivers. Ook zij concluderen, evenals Firingsquad, dat de FSAA performance met deze drivers in Direct3D een flink stuk is verbeterd, wat natuurlijk erg mooi is :

Performance wise, NVIDIA's GeForce2 GTS does have the Voodoo5 5500 beat. There's no way you can argue that statement, but once you factor in FSAA performance and image quality the GeForce2 GTS all of the sudden loses its appeal. When the GeForce2 GTS was released its 5.16 drivers wouldn't even support FSAA in Direct3D. Later on with the release of the Detonator 5.22 drivers the GeForce2 GTS gained FSAA support but the performance was far from satisfactory, by this point we just assumed that if you really wanted FSAA support the Voodoo5 would be your best choice.

As we mentioned in our Detonator 5.22 investigation, the performance of NVIDIA's D3D FSAA implementation could most definitely improved with some better drivers.

Een Intel woordvoerder heeft tegenover Electronic Buyers' News te kennen gegeven dat er bij Intel geen plannen zijn om licenties voor de quad-pumped Pentium 4 bus te verstrekken aan third-party chipset fabrikanten zoals VIA.
