Bij de Nederlandse ZDNet is te lezen dat Sony eindelijk iets laat weten over haar PalmOS-based PDA. Zoals te verwachten gebruikt het apparaatje de Memorystick flash-kaarten van Sony. Nu er wat meer Palm-klonen komen, wordt er ook meer geëxperimenteerd met het PalmOS systeem, en kunnen we nog interessante multimedia-toepassingen voor de Palm verwachten.

Verkrijgbaar in verschillende trendy kleuren, zal de Sony PDA audio- en multimediafunctionaliteiten bezitten. Het prototype heeft geen mogelijkheid om draadloos te surfen, al zou dit wel kunnen veranderen tegen de tijd dat het 'officieel' verschijnt. Het verschijnen van deze Sony PDA is goed nieuws voor Palm. Bij de lancering van de Microsoft Pocket PC's werd een groot punt gemaakt van de multimediacapaciteiten van de toestellen, vooral in vergelijking met Palm. Sony bewijst dat het ook met Palm OS die toer op kan, iets wat eigenlijk al bewezen werd door de firma Handspring. Zij brachten eind vorig jaar de Visor uit. Wanneer de Sony PDA de winkels zal bereiken, blijft onduidelijk. Japan zal wellicht eerst aan bod komen, ergens medio juli. De V.S. en Europa moeten wachten tot kerstmis.

De vereniging van nederlandse internetproviders (NLIP) is niet echt blij (lees: ze hebben een berg kritiek) met het 'onderzoek' wat de registratiekamer heeft gehouden onder de nederlandse ISP's over de privacy van de internetter. Volgens de NLIP is het een schijnvertoning, het onderzoek, en heeft de registratiekamer haar huiswerk niet gedaan:

De eindconclusie van de Registratiekamer kan volgens de branchevereniging 'beslist niet' op basis van het onderzoek worden getrokken. De NLIP doet het onderzoek af als een 'steekproef' en vindt het 'jammer' dat aard en omvang van daadwerkelijk misbruik van gebruikersgegevens niet zijn onderzocht. Het onderzoek zou bovendien 'feitelijke onjuistheden' bevatten.

Op verzoek van de Consumentenbond deed de Registratiekamer onderzoek naar de bescherming van de privacy van internetgebruikers door de providers. Maandag werden de resultaten gepresenteerd. De conclusie: "De bescherming van persoonsgegevens door providers schiet in aanzienlijke mate tekort."

[...] De NLIP vindt het onderzoek een schijnvertoning. "Het onderzoek van de Registratiekamer geeft helaas geen antwoord op de vraag: hoe zit het met de privacy van de internetabonnee?", schrijft de vereniging in een persbericht.

"Op meerder plaatsen in het onderzoek wordt geconstateerd dat het bewaren van klant- en verkeersgegevens onnodig en (dus) onrechtmatig is", schrijft de NLIP. "De Registratiekamer gaat daarbij voorbij aan het feit dat er een verplichting is voor ISP's tot bewaren van deze gegevens, en wel ten behoeve van opsporingsdoeleinden." Volgens de NLIP is een 'maatschappelijke taak' gekoppeld aan het verzamelen van gebruikersgegevens.

Onlangs schreef The Register nog dat Intel weer leveringsproblemen had met de Pentium III. In dat artikel werd gezegd dat dit weinig invloed zou hebben op de grote OEM's als Dell. Maar Michael Dell vertelt ons nu dat ook zij last hebben van de tekorten, en dan vooral van de kant van Intel. Zij proberen deze problemen te omzeilen door veel reclame te maken voor de producten die ze wel kunnen leveren.

Michael Dell said today that while his company "is not quite getting everything we'd like" from Intel, "I think we'll be able to work through it."

Dell said he expects to navigate the shortages by promoting Dell products that use more readily available parts.

The shortages have led to higher component prices, which in turn are stabilizing average PC prices. PC prices appear to be rising slightly in the quarter, Dell said.

the system bracht ons een link naar ZDNet Nederland waar informatie staat over een nieuwe MP3 speler van Aiwa. De MM-FX500 onderscheidt zich door een ingebouwde encoder waardoor de PC niet persé nodig is om er muziek in te pompen.

In september gaat Aiwa de MM-FX500 MP3-speler ook in Europa uitbrengen. Nochtans werd het draagbare toestel al in februari aangekondigd en ligt het sinds het begin van deze maand in de Japanse winkels. Opmerkelijk is wel dat het apparaat niet enkel muziekbestanden kan afspelen, maar dat het ook in staat is om rechtstreeks digitale audio te encoderen van een analoge bron. Hierdoor is het niet noodzakelijk om eerst bestanden van een pc te downloaden om muziek te beluisteren. Dat kan wel, via een parallelle poortaansluiting. De MM-FX 500 gebruikt MultiMediaCards met 32MB opslagruimte. De speler ondersteunt beveiligde Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI)-bestanden. Een exacte kostprijs is nog niet beschikbaar voor het toestel, maar zou rond 480 euro liggen.

The Register schrijft over een nieuwe techniek voor data-opslag dat de grond aan moet gaan vegen met de huidige CD en DVD. Constellation 3D heeft 'multi-layered disks' ontwikkeld waar tot wel een terabyte aan gegevens op past tegen een fractie van de kosten die daar nu voor nodig zijn. Ter vergelijking zou een 1GB Flash disk $2000 dollar kosten, deze disks zouden voor $5 dollar verkocht kunnen worden. Over een jaar zouden de eerste read only versies in productie kunnen gaan, de beschrijfbare RAM versies worden verwacht in de winter van 2001.

The problem with current optical storage is that the technology is operating close to its theoretical limits. By using a fluorescent polymer on the surface of a disk, data can be read simply by detecting the presence of a fluorescent flash.

IBM spent a small fortune - $100 million - on research into optical multi-layer storage before deciding it was not a feasible prospect. Using reflective technology, the signal quickly degrades as the number of layers increased.

The new fluorescent technology retains the signal quality much longer, since the light is totally incoherent. Several layers are integrated into the media, separated by distances as small as 15 microns. A laser focuses on one layer at a time, reading or writing to each separately.

The Register meldt dat het marktaandeel van Microsoft's browser IE groter is dan ooit tevoren. Volgens het meest recente onderzoek gebruikt 86,08% van de internetgebruiker Internet Explorer, tegen maar 13,9% voor Netscape Navigator.

If you've been conscientiously referring to Microsoft's near-monopoly of the browser market, you can now safely drop the prefix. Research indicates that IE is now the browser of choice (or no choice, depending on your point of view) for in excess of 80 per cent of the market.

The latest stats from WebSideStory's Statmarket, which collects data on 50 million users a day via WebSideStory's Hitbox, show IE reaching record heights with 86.08 per cent of users, while Netscape is down to 13.9 per cent.

Is Internet Explorer nou zo'n goede browser in vergelijking tot Netscape, of is het grotere marktaandeel alleen te wijten aan de monopoliepositie die Microsoft heeft door IE bij Windows te leveren?

The distribution agreements come as Excite@Home is making a major bet to maintain and extend its lead as the largest fast-connection Internet service provider. In staking out that territory, the company is already following a long-standing media rule: Content is king.

The incentive is a page data density of 10 GB per cubic cm, a bit smaller than a standard gambling die. Trainwrecker heeft een review online gezet van het Cat Eye Finring apparaatje. Dit is een klein apparaatje wat je om je vinger kan schuiven en wat dan als muis kan dienen. Volgens de reviewer was het niet extreem moeilijk om te gebruiken, maar het was wel even wennen en voor gaming was dit dingetje volgens hem ook niet ideaal:

Taipei, Taiwan, June 27, 2000 -- VIA Technologies, Inc. today announces support for the high-speed ATA-100 hard disk drive interface in its upcoming South Bridge chipsets, increasing the current burst data transfer rate of hard drives up to 100 megabytes (MB) per second. ATA-100 is a third generation hard drive interface technology patented by Quantum Corporation, a leading storage supplier of hard disk drives, that is designed for rapid, high throughput data transfer between computers and hard drives, and improved data integrity. VIA, Intel and top tier personal computer and hard disk drive manufacturers support the new open standard, with ATA-100 products and systems expected to start shipping in the fall of 2000 after free licensing.

[...] With disk transfer rates soon to exceed 66Mb per second, enlarging the ATA interface to 100Mb per second is necessary to avoid data bottlenecks. The ATA-100 standard removes such bottlenecks associated with data transfers, especially sequential operations and manipulations of today's massively complicated files, allowing PCs to send and receive data more rapidly between their system and hard drive. Intel heeft weer twee nieuwe processoren in de Xeon-reeks voor ons klaarliggen (als je het kan betalen).
De proc's zullen draaien op 700 MHz en hebben 1 MB ($1117) en 2 MB ($1980) cache.

De nieuwe modellen zijn aanzienlijk sneller én vooral goedkoper dan de vorige Xeons. Die draaiden aan een kloksnelheid van 550 MHz en droegen tot voor kort een prijskaartje van 3.690 dollar. Vermoedelijk gaat de chipfabrikant bij de lancering van de Itanium twee prijsklassen van serverprocessors aanbieden: de goedkopere Xeon's aan een kant en duurdere Itanium's aan de andere. Intel waarschuwt wel dat de nieuwe Xeon-processors aanvankelijk slechts in kleine hoeveelheden verkrijgbaar zullen zijn. Voorspeld wordt dat 700 MHz niet het hoogtepunt qua kloksnelheid zal zijn voor de Xeon Pentium III. Aangezien de gewone Pentium ondertussen al aan 1 GHz toe is, zal het 0,18-micron ontwerp van de Xeon - nauw verwant aan de desktop PIII - naar alle waarschijnlijkheid een gelijkaardige snelheid aankunnen.

Het gaat niet zo goed meer met 3dfx, de fabrikant van de zo beroemde Voodoo. NVidia produceert sneller en beter, waardoor de winsten van 3dfx erg zullen dalen.

De maker van de Voodoo-reeks, ooit nummer één in de 3D-markt, is door ATIe n nVidia voorbijgestoken. Vooral de lange tijd die de firma nodig had om de nieuwste Voodoo-chip, de VSA-100, uit te brengen, heeft hen de das omgedaan. ATI en in het bijzonder nVidia hebben wel om het half jaar een sneller product gelanceerd, waardoor 3dfx genoodzaakt was om de prijzen van zijn producten sneller te verlagen dan gepland, met een forse aantasting van de winstcijfers tot gevolg. In een poging het tij te keren, wil het bedrijf zijn activiteiten verbreden en niet alleen grafische producten exclusief voor de desktop-pc leveren. Onder leiding van Leupp wordt nu gewerkt aan een 3D-product voor notebooks en portables.

The one thing that is really important in a case is cooling and the HX08 has some really nice cooling. Even with out any extra cooling fans the case doesn’t get over heated and performs perfectly. But if you like to add some extra cooling you can add two muffin fans at the top of the case and a third one can be fitted into an interface card guide, which snaps into the lower front of the case, and also protects the speaker.

I think that the AOpen HX08 case is very well designed and constructed. I really like the Bent edges because you don't cut yourself when you are installing your hardware. The one thing that really bothers me is that there is only one visible 3.5" bay and that there are no extra fans that come with the case, if you don't really need them then it doesn't really matter but if you do, then this case is not one of the first case that I would buy. This case is really nice and I would recommend you buying it if you don't really need those extra fans.

The Register heeft een interessant artikel geschreven over het feit dat Windows Millenium Edition gebruikers problemen zullen ondervinden bij bv. het updaten van het BIOS. Microsoft is namelijk zo leuk om alle 'gevaarlijke' DOS commands uit het OS te slopen waardoor het maken van een opstartdisk niet meer mogelijk is. Way to go Bill! Lees even mee:

Microsoft today confirmed that users will have no easy way to update system BIOSes after upgrading to Windows Millennium or Windows 2000. M$ commendable aim of removing all those dangerous command line bits has an unfortunate side effect - there's no way to build the bootable floppy needed by BIOS upgrades.

Win2K cannot build a bootable floppy version of itself and ME has been hobbled so that you can no longer SYS a floppy or use the /S switch on the FORMAT command. Check out the following WinME DOS box dialogue:

[...] Microsoft has put a lot of thought into stopping you lot messing about with DOS commands, to the extent of even ensuring that the Win98SE version of FORMAT fails under WinME with an 'incorrect DOS version' message.

[...] A Microsoft technical support spokesman today confirmed that there was no simple way of creating a boot floppy under ME and no way at all of creating one under Win2K. The best he could come up with was writing the BIOS data to a second floppy and swapping disks. Unfortunately, the Intel upgrade process is now totally automated and runs out of AUTOEXEC.BAT. The reason for this being that almost all upgrades now involve rewriting the boot block flash - any interruption to this process can result in the flash being corrupted and the motherboard rendered unusable - hardly a trivial problem.

[...] While BIOS upgrades were once rare, fixes to processor and chipset errata mean that these days an update is available every month or so and users sticking with the original BIOS shipped with their systems will inevitably be suffering performance and reliability problems.

Windows ME is designed to make the users' life easier. But in the vital area of keeping the BIOS up to date, it's making it damn near impossible. It seems the only sure way of being able to create a boot floppy in the future is to keep an ancient 286 system in a cupboard and bring it out when you need to write one.

Microsoft will release Service Pack 4 for Visual Studio 6.0 tomorrow. This service pack addresses customer issues amongst many of the Visual Studio 6.0 tools, and is a 'superset' of Visual Studio service packs 1, 2, and 3.

Available for free on the Visual Studio Web site as either a download or a CD order. As with all service packs, Microsoft recommends that developers creating apps with Visual Studio 6.0 install the VS SP4 prior to releasing their applications.

Zo te zien goed nieuws voor de Casema-gebruikers.

1 Casema zal de gedupeerde abonnees financieel compenseren.

2 De bewijslast van problemen ligt niet langer bij de abonnees. Iedereen die problemen heeft krijgt geld terug.

3 Casema zal helder omschrijven wat er van het product mag worden verwacht.

Volgende week dinsdag moet het voorstel van Casema zwart op wit staan. Zo niet dan volgen er acties. Het kan heel goed zijn dat de WIGG niet akkoord gaat, de CB zal dan waarschijnlijk evenmin met Casema tot een schikking komen. Namelijk: De WIGG wil dat alle abonnees die problemen hebben gecompenseerd worden voor de HELE periode waarin zij abonnee zijn. Dat betekent dat de financiële compensatie voldoende groot moet zijn. Een paar maandjes abonnementsgeld terug is absoluut geen optie. De reden is dat daarmee de mensen die al jaren de op de Casema beloften hebben vertrouwd er slecht afkomen ten opzichte van de mensen die pas een paar maanden lid zijn.

Het betreft hier een veiligheidslek in de mailclient, waardoor ongewenste personen bij je mail kunnen komen.

ICQ2000a has a small security flaw. It's not a major one, but it can become major.

It deals with using the ICQmailclient. ICQ creates a temporary link in your temp directory. This link contains your user ID and password encrypted. Even though your info is encrypted, it is useless. You can still access your ICQ mail via that temporary link just as you would go to any other URL stored on your computer.

This is bad if more than one person has access to your computer and knows about this. Also, if a person knows about this and you are infected with a trojan. Then they can simply download the link, then go to the link and change your password.

Fix: clear your temp directory after you log out of ICQ mail.

Ik kreeg van SuperMicro te horen dat de SuperMicro 370DL3 en 370DLE moederplanken met ServerWorks ServerSet III LE chipset over 'enkele weken' in Europa verkrijgbaar zullen zijn. Beide borden hebben twee FC-PGA sockets, vier DIMM slots (uitsluitend ECC), twee 64-bit 66/33MHz PCI slots, vier 32-bit 33MHz PCI slots en één ISA slot. De 370DL3 is hierbij tevens voorzien van een single channel Adaptec AIC-7892 Ultra160 SCSI controller. Afgezien van dit verschil delen beide borden dezelfde layout.

ServerWorks biedt voor bouwers van een dual PIII systeem een interessant alternatief voor de chipsets van Intel en VIA. De Intel BX en GX zijn verouderd, de i820E en i840 met Rambus zijn te duur en dual VIA Apollo Pro 133A mobo's schijnen nog niet helemaal stabiel te draaien. De ServerSet III LE ondersteunt wél PC133 SDRAM en een 133MHz bus, bovendien mag je van ServerWorks (en SuperMicro) verwachten dat het geheel zich solide gedraagt.

Naast de ServerSet III LE chipset, die in bovenstaande twee SuperMicro borden wordt gebruikt, heeft ServerWorks nog twee snellere P6 chipsets in het assortiment. Deze ServerSet III WS en HE chipsets maken gebruik van 2 of 4-way interleaving, waardoor met gebruik van simpel PC133 ECC SDRAM een bandbreedte van 2,1 of 4,1GB/s bereikt kan worden. Dit is vooral interessant voor servers met snelle DMA devices, zoals Ultra160 en Fibre Channel RAID controllers.

Internet provider Freeler moet bezuinigen omdat financieel succes uitblijft. Ondanks grote marketing campagnes, waaronder de welbekende TV spotjes, vallen de bezoekersaantallen van de Freeler site tegen. Om kosten te besparen wordt dure content uit de Freeler site gesloopt en wordt de site omgebouwd tot een link portal naar voorbeeld van Startpagina.nl. Kortom: Freeler gaat blond. Minder inhoud, meer vage verwijzingen. Voor hoofdredacteur Pieter van Twisk is deze conceptwijzigingen reden om de tent gedag te zeggen:

Belangrijk onderdeel van de bezuinigingen is een radicale verandering van het Freeler-webportaal. De site bevat nu veel originele, kostbare inhoud. Doel is de bezoeker zo lang mogelijk vast te houden binnen Freeler.nl. Dat concept wordt omgegooid. Freeler wil per 1 augustus de klant zo goed mogelijk doorverwijzen naar andere sites, een soort Favoriet.nl of Startpagina.nl. Minder content, meer links dus.

De wijziging van het uitgeefconcept is voor Freeler-hoofdredacteur Pieter van Twisk aanleiding op te stappen. Van Twisk, die aan de wieg stond van Intermediair Online en bij VNU werd weggehaald door Freeler, was niet betrokken bij de besluitvorming over de nieuwe portal. "Ik werd opeens geconfronteerd met een beslissing", aldus Van Twisk vanuit zijn vakantieverblijf in Frankrijk.

dennis@wacky schrijft: "CNN bericht dat America Online, 's werelds grootste internetprovider, is aangeklaagd voor het gebruik van zogenaamde pop-ups, waar AOL gebruiker doorheen moeten klikken voordat zij kunnen surfen. Aangezien AOL gebruikers bij hun abonnement slechts 3 of 5 uur surftijd per maand inbegrepen hebben, kosten de popups volgens de aanklager veel geld voor AOL gebruikers. Na die 3 of 5 uur moeten de gebruikers namelijk gaan betalen voor hun online tijd.

AOL zegt echter dat de popups eenvoudig uit zijn te schakelen. Volgens de gebruikers klopt dit, maar het werkt maar tijdelijk. Na een tijdje komen ze namelijk gewoon weer terug. De aanklagers willen niet alleen 15 tot 20 miljoen dollar, maar ook een einde van deze praktijken van AOL":

A Florida judge has approved a class-action, multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the world's largest Internet service provider, America Online, on behalf of hourly subscribers who viewed so-called "pop-up" advertisements.

Miami attorney Andrew Tramont said AOL blocks customers' access to its services during the time that the pop-up advertisements are on the screen. About 2.5 million AOL hourly plan subscribers since 1994, he maintained, should not be forced to pay for that time.

[...] Only after a customer reads through a series of advertisements, or clicks the "No thanks" button, is the pop-up removed from the screen and the user is able to resume using AOL's services, such as e-mail or the Internet. "If you have kids and they read slowly, or they read each ad, that time adds up," said Tramont.

Tramont said the practice amounts to charging twice for the same product. "AOL gets money from advertisers, then money from subscribers, so they're making double on the same time," he said.

Tramont said he would likely seek $15 million to $20 million in damages, along with changes in AOL's business practices.

De licentie deal die Hitachi en Rambus Inc. vorige week sloten zal geen toepassing hebben op de DRAM joint-venture tussen Hitachi en NEC. Na voltooiing van deze joint-venture zullen de DRAM produkten van beide bedrijven onder de naam van NEC verkocht worden. Hitachi zal wel royalties betalen voor SDRAM memory controllers die gebruikt worden in de Hitachi Super H processors:

Avo Kanadjian, vice president of worldwide marketing for Rambus, confirmed that last week's settlement with Hitachi doesn't cover the joint venture, which will be the sole marketing arm for DRAMs produced by both Japanese chip makers. "It covers the transition period before the NEC and Hitachi joint DRAM venture becomes effective," he said.

[...] However, Kanadjian said Hitachi Ltd. would continue to pay royalties for the synchronous logic controller interface that is part of its Super H series of microprocessors that connect directly with memory. Hitachi will produce and sell the Super H line itself.

Terwijl Napster, Metallica, Madonna, meneer Dre en de rest van Amerikaanse muziekindustrie ineen hevige deathmatch zijn verwikkeld, werken security bedrijven in stilte aan maatregelen tegen file-swapping tools zoals Gnutella en het immer geroemde Napster. Vooral universiteiten zien de snelheid van hun internet uplinks als pudding in mekaar vallen door het fanatieke geleech op de campus.

Twee mogelijke oplossingen zijn PacketShaper van Packeteer en PacketHound van Palisade Systems. Beide zijn een hardware/software oplossing die de netwerk traffic analyseren op verdachte partronen. Het gebruik van proggies zoals Napster wordt er niet door onmogelijk gemaakt, maar de bandbreedte wordt wel dusdandig toebedeeld dat er voorrang wordt gegeven aan de eigenlijke toepassingen waarvoor het netwerk is bedoelt:

Hap Wheeler of Plattsburgh State University in New York, and John Muggli of College of St. Benedict and St. John's University of Minnesota, are among a growing number of network administrators looking for solutions to the congestion.

With PacketShaper, Wheeler, who ensures network capability for 2,600 students, was able to set policies which allowed students to still access Napster, but keep it from diverting bandwidth away from university-sponsored applications.

"Beginning last November, our T-1 was useless -- incoming and outgoing," Wheeler said. "It was just flooded and a search kept pointing the way to Napster."

But Wheeler and Muggli also had to contend with students claiming their right to "free speech" was being tread upon. Because PacketShaper doesn't kill content, students could not direct anger toward their network managers. It wasn't that Wheeler and Muggli were pulling the plug on their students Internet access; rather they made them wait a little bit for PacketShaper to distribute bandwidth appropriately.

[...] Another solution is PacketHound, developed by Palisade Systems Inc.. It's a software and hardware solution that allows administrators to block a number of bandwidth-eating applications, including Gnutella, RealAudio and RealVideo and Napster. The product resides passively on networks, making it invisible to hackers. By utilizing Intel-based PCs, the product is often less expensive and easier to administer than ordinary firewalls.

News.com bericht dat DSP fabrikant Ford Microelectronics (FMI) is overgenomen door Intel. Met deze overname wil Intel zijn positie verstevigen in de markt voor draadloze communicatie, waar Intel al actief is met flash memories en embedded processors. Op dit moment gebruiken fabrikanten van handhelds en draagbare telefoons vaak zelf ontwikkelde chips of chips van verschillende fabrikanten. Intel kan door de overname een veel breder pakket aanbieden, een belangrijke pré omdat outsourcing voor fabrikanten van draagbare apparatuur steeds interessanter zal worden door de toenemede complexiteit van chips en de daarmee gepaarde toename van ontwikkelingskosten:

Intel today effectively acquired Ford Microelectronics (FMI), the latest step in the company's ambition to become a supplier for virtually all the crucial chips inside cell phones and handheld computers.

[...] Colorado Springs, Colo.-based FMI designs mixed signal and analog processors, which are used to convert sound and other "real world" phenomena into digital data that can be interpreted by computer networks.

[...] Intel already manufactures flash memory and embedded microprocessors, two of the crucial components in cell phones. In the future, however, Intel will become more involved in manufacturing digital signal processors (DSP), which refine cellular signals, and other chips that go into handsets, base stations and other wireless equipment, he said. In the second half of the year, for example, Intel and Analog Devices will release a co-developed DSP.

Because of the complexity, design cycles and standards issues, it will become easier to outsource this function and standardize on silicon from outside manufacturers.

Hewlett Packard heeft drie nieuwe flatbed scanners aangekondigd. Met de ScanJet 3400C en 4300C richt HP zicht op home en office gebruikers. De scanners maken gebruik van een USB of LPT interface en werken met een 36-bit kleurdiepte en 600dpi optische resolutie. Tevens nieuw is de ScanJet 5370C, een flatbed met 42-bit kleurdiepte en 1200dpi optische resolutie. De verwachte prijs van de 5730C is 299 dollar:

Voodoo5 5500 may have the edge in FSAA, but the Annihilator2 definitely has the edge in driver support through Blaster Control, Fast Trax and Win2K support.

Deze Kamerbehandeling van Echelon is een keerpunt in de discussie in Nederland. In de afgelopen twee jaar zijn Kamervragen over het afluistersysteem door de ministers van Binnenlandse Zaken en Justitie steeds ontwijkend beantwoord.

Echelon is de codenaam voor het project van de National Security Agency (een onderdeel van de Amerikaanse overheid dat officieel niet eens bestaat) en de Britse overheid om alle telecommunicatie te onderscheppen, en te analyseren op zogenaamde codewoorden. Dus als je in een emailtje zegt "Is the bomb to blow up Clinton ready?" is er een goede kans dat een amerikaanse bureaucraat dat onderschept, en de gevolgen zoals je je misschien kunt voorstellen kunnen onplezierig zijn. Belangrijker nog is dat de NSA informatie die zo verkregen is ook doorspeelt aan grote amerikaanse bedrijven: grootschalige, door de regering gesteunde internationale bedrijfsspionage met andere woorden.

Om het interessant te maken voor de hardware-tweakers onder ons zeggen we er nog even bij dat de NSA, vooral voor dit doel, de grootste afnemer ter wereld is van Cray en andere merken supercomputers.
