Volgens de bekende site Overclockers.com is het mogelijk om zonder de processor thuis te hebben te bepalen hoe goed of slecht deze over te klokken is. Op de core staat informatie over de snelheid, FSB en de plek plus datum van productie, maar daarnaast staan er nog wat onverklaarbare tekenreeksen. Daaraan is volgens het artikel af te leiden hoe hoog je maximaal met de core kan komen.

Hun theorie is dat deze informatie verborgen zit in eerste vier letters van de tweede regel. Vooral de tweede en derde moeten zo hoog mogelijk in het alfabet zitten voor de beste resultaten. Ze hebben bijvoorbeeld ontdekt dat processors met AQFA cores niet meer dan 1GHz halen, terwijl AVHA tot 1,1GHz gaat. De betere cores op dit moment zijn AXHA en BXHA, deze komen rond de 1,2GHz of iets daarboven. De onbetwiste topper van nu is de AXIA core, deze haalt tussen de 1,3 en 1,5GHz:

For those more systematically-minded, it either means AMD is using a number of different processes to make the CPU, or (what I find just as likely), these codes represent some sort of grading after testing by AMD.

For your purposes, it really doesn't matter which it is. What this tells us is that a pretty good way to get the fastest chip available at a certain speed is to get one with the second and third letters of the alphabet as high up as possible.

So if you have to choose between a 1Ghz AQFA or AVHA, go for the latter, because V and H come after Q and F in the alphabet. If it's between an AXHA and AXIA, pick the AXIA because I comes after H in the alphabet.

Ook hier zien we duidelijk een AXIA core. Een opmerkelijk toeval of een zeer handig hulpmiddel om de juiste processor uit de tray te pikken?

Chris Angelini van Sharky Extreme heeft vandaag een review online gezet over de Game Theater XP geluidskaart van Hercules. Deze kaart is gebaseerd op de Crystal CS4630 chip die zorgt voor de broodnodige ondersteuning voor verschillende geluidsstandaarden (EAX 1.0, EAX 2.0, A3D 1.0). Verder zit er een erg handige break-out box bij met allerhande aansluitingen waarmee deze kaart prima kan concurreren met de Soundblaster Live! Platinum, maar dan wel met een prijskaartje die 50 dollar kleiner is . Een paar kleine minpuntjes zijn er wel zoals het ontbreken van een S/PDIF ingang voor CD audio, maar niks ernstigs. Al met al goed voor de Extreme Hardware award en een 9.5 als cijfer:

As we saw in our review of the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, the CS4630 DSP is incredibly flexible - Hercules could not have chosen a better signal processor to make a commanding re-entrance into the sound card market. By including PowerDVD 3.0 (a $50 value), an encompassing number of connectivity options, the possibility for eight-channel audio, a headphone amplifier, and most importantly, a good driver implementation, the Game Theater XP has one-upped Creative Labs' Sound Blaster Live! Platinum. Factor in a price point that strikes $50 below the Live! Platinum, and we've got a real winner on our hands.

Our list of complaints is short and sweet. First off, we sorely miss the digital S/PDIF CD audio input on the card, since many other high-end cards have included this connector. Secondly, it would be nice to see Hercules implement some sort of environmental effects engine to match the capabilities of the Live! series and Turtle Beach's Santa Cruz. Finally, we are still waiting for the Windows 2000 release of Hercules' version 2.0 driver for the Game Theater that should resolve the few bugs we uncovered.

SiS kwam vandaag met het nieuws aanzetten dat ze zijn begonnen met de massa-productie van een tweetal nieuwe Socket370 chipsets met ondersteuning voor de 0.13 micron Tualatin-variant van de Pentium III. De eerste is de SiS 635T, deze is gebaseerd op de normale SiS 635 en heeft als enige verandering de optie om met de lagere voltages van de Tualatin core om te gaan. De tweede, SiS 633T, ondersteunt normaal SDRAM, terwijl de eerder genoemde met DDR geheugen kan werken. De chips zelf worden op 0.18 micron in een 8 inch wafer fab gebakken en het bedrijf heeft al een aantal moederbordmakers over weten te halen een plankje eromheen te ontwerpen:

This "Double Triumphs" (SiS633T and SiS635T) meant significantly to SiS in obtaining a greater market share. "Being the pioneer in mass production of these two chipsets has demonstrated our correct product strategy, and the worldly competitive yield and optimum capacity of our 8-inch fab, " said Ken Huang, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "It further strengthens our confidence that the business model of building our own wafer fab is working since it streamlines the scheduling and assures availability of our products."

SiS has now deployed the 0.18-micron process in most of its production in its 8-inch fab, and successfully pilot-run the advanced 0.15-micron process. With the mass production of SiS633T and SiS635T, it indicates the wafer fab is increasingly playing a key role in SiS' future growth. In an effort to distinguish SiS635 being the first DDR chipset in mass production, SiS has renamed the earlier SiS635 to SiS635T where "T" stands for "Tualatin".

Bij GamePC is één van de eerste vergelijkingen verschenen tussen verschillende koelers voor de Intel Pentium 4. De zes koelers die getest worden zijn de Coolermaster DP4-6I51 en DP4-6I11, de GlobalWin VAW32, de Thermaltake P4 Golden Orb en Indigo Orb en last but not least de Intel retail koeler. Volgens de reviewer is de Indigo Orb de beste koeler van het stel, maar zoals gebruikelijk betekend dat ook dat ie de duurtste en lawaaierigste is. Indien niet zoveel behoefte hebt aan het overclocken van je spiksplinternieuwe Pentium 4 en je een hekel hebt aan lawaai is de retail fan de ideale keus. En voor de grijze middenmoot is de Coolermaster DP4-6I51 leuk:

Well, it's obvious that Thermaltake's new Indigo Orb is the performance king, but at what cost? The cooler is the most expensive of the pack, and is the loudest. If the best cooling performance is your primary agenda, this is the Pentium 4 cooler to get. Plus, it should allow you plenty of breathing room for upgrades when the P4 1.7 and 2.0 GHz chips eventually show up.

As for the quietest cooler, without a doubt the trophy goes to the Intel retail cooler. The thing is just dead silent. The Thermaltake P4 Golden Orb is also very quiet, but doesn't seem to be up to par in terms of performance anymore.

The GlobalWin and Coolermaster units are your basic, run of the mill coolers. Don't perform the best, but don't perform badly. They're not the quietest units, but they're usually some of the cheapest. Considering the relatively low temperature differences between the coolers, it just may be a safe bet to buy a generic P4 cooler with some good thermal paste.

Het heeft wat langer geduurd dan voorspeld, maar vandaag heeft Transmeta dan toch haar Mobile Linux gelanceerd. Mobile Linux zoals we 't gemakshalve maar hebben genoemd gaat in de werkelijkheid Linux Midori heten. Midori is Japans voor 'groen', en Transmeta gebruikt deze naam om te onderstrepen hoe energiezuinig haar Linux - natuurlijk in combinatie met Transmeta's processoren - wel is. Midori Linux is vanaf vandaag te downloaden en is vrijgegeven onder de bekende GNU General Public License, zodat iedereen het zonder meer kan en mag gebruiken en natuurlijk er ook aan mag bijdragen. Transmeta Corporation today announced that it has 'open sourced' its Mobile Linux operating system, known as Midori Linux, to allow industry-wide input for its further development.

The source code changes Transmeta made to Linux are being open sourced as part of the "Midori Linux Project." The term 'project' reflects Transmeta's intention that the operating system's continued development include open industry participation.

"Midori Linux will be attractive for any application that can benefit from full Linux compatibility, low power, low thermals and a small footprint," said David R. Ditzel, vice chairman and chief technology officer, Transmeta Corporation. "We consider Midori Linux to be a technology building block for use by Transmeta, our customers and the open source community. Through this announcement we are inviting everyone to participate in the operating system's evolution."

This x86 compatible version of Linux is suitable for a broad range of applications, not only those that are mobile. Midori Linux has already been successfully implemented by some of Transmeta's major customers in unique product designs. One such product, the Gateway Connected TouchPad with instant AOL access, is a fanless, cool- and quiet-running Internet appliance that was a "Best of Show" award winner at Comdex Fall 2000. Other products, such as ultra-dense servers recently announced by Transmeta customers, will also benefit from the operating system's power-conserving and footprint enhancements.

The name Midori Linux is based on the Japanese word for the color green - midori - and was chosen to reflect the environmentally friendly aspects of a low power Linux operating system.

Bij AnandTech is een review over de Kyro II 64MB videokaart neergezet. De Kyro II is een opgevoerde versie van de normale Kyro gebakken op een 0.18 micron procedé in plaats van een 0.25 micron procédé. Door deze die-shrink kan de core lopen op een prettige 175MHz. Aangezien het geheugen synchroon loopt met de core loopt de 64MB aan SDR geheugen nu ook op 175MHz. De Kyro II maakt, evenals de normale Kyro, gebruik van tile-based rendering wat simpelweg inhoud dat hij alleen de dingen tekent die getekend moeten worden. Dankzij deze techniek weet hij de fillrate van 350Mpixels per seconde uitermate effectief te benutten. Verder is de kaart bijna identiek gebleven qua features, alleen S3TC texture compression is nieuw. Transform & Lighting ondersteuning heeft de kaart dus niet.

Ondanks deze matige specificaties weet de kaart dankzij het tile-based rendering trucje verrassende resultaten neer te zetten. In Serious Sam is de Kyro II in 1024x786x32 en 1600x1200x32 sneller dan een GeForce2 Ultra met een paar procent . In andere benchmarks komt de kaart niet zo mooi uit de bus, daar is hij vaak ‘maar’ net sneller dan een GeForce2 GTS. Het leukste is echter dat de richtprijs voor deze kaart slechts 149 dollar (de 3D Prophet 4500 Kyro II heeft een adviesprijs van fl. 429) is . Een echte GeForce2 MX killer dus:

It has been a while since we have had a truly high powered graphics card dip below the $200 price mark. In the past, stripped down versions of higher performing parts were sold to cost conscious consumers, often times leaving them with sub par performance. The Kyro II changes all that.

With its tile based rendering algorithm, the Kyro II provides blazing fast performance considering the price and was actually able to beat products almost $200 more than the cost of a Kyro II based board. Throughout the benchmarks, the Kyro II based 3D Prophet 4500 simply dominated everything else in its price range. The Kyro II was ready and able to tackle any game we sent its way.

Bij VIAHardware.com is een uitgebreide review te vinden van het nieuwe Shuttle AV32 moederbord. De gelukkige Socket 370 processor die plaats mag nemen op dit mobo wordt aangestuurd door een VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset, zoals bekend met DDR SDRAM ondersteuning. Ook is het plankje voorzien van twee normale SDRAM sloten, zodat het met de backwards compatibility wel snor zit.

Qua layout is de reviewer niet helemaal tevreden over de AV32. Zo kunnen de DIMMs moeilijk te vervangen zijn wanneer er een wat lagere AGP kaart wordt geplaatst, zit de powerconnector op een vervelende plek en kunnen IDE-kabels in de weg zitten wanneer er lange PCI-kaarten worden geplaatst. Gelukkig zijn er wel wat overklokmogelijkheden aanwezig: de VCore is tot 2.2V instelbaar en de FSB kan worden gewijzigd, zij het met stappen van 3MHz. Hiermee was het mogelijk om de geteste Pentium III 866MHz met beide Corsair geheugens (PC150 en PC2100) op een 150MHz FSB te doen draaien.

De benchmarks laten al snel de verbeteringen zien die gedaan zijn aan de chipset sinds zijn voorloper, de Pro133A. Zelfs met normaal SDRAM geheugen is deze beta-revisie van de AV32 een stukje sneller dan een moederbord met de Pro133A. Met DDR geheugen bouwt deze zijn voorsprong in Quake 3 Arena uit tot zo'n 12%. De conclusie is dan ook positief:

We have shown that the situation VIA's Pro266 is facing now is quite different from the one i820 faced in early 2000. DDR has industry wide support, and is quickly falling in price. Already, it is cheaper on average then even the slowest flavor of RDRAM, PC600.

To make matters even brighter, the SDR compatibility of Pro266 is unquestioned. Not only does Pro266 support SDRAM, but SDRAM actually performs better on Pro266 then it does on its predecessor, Pro133A. Boards like Shuttle's AV32, with a "2+2" configuration, truly bring out the flexability in the Pro266 chipset.

DataPlay heeft bekend gemaakt dat ze weer een sterke partner hebben weten te strikken. Het bedrijf heeft nu al deals met drie van de vijf grote platenmaatschappijen om een nieuwe, veilige manier van digitale muziek-opslag te introduceren. De DataPlay schijfjes zijn zo groot als een halve dollar en er kan 250MB aan data op elke kant worden gezet. Het is zowel mogelijk om lege als voorbespeelde schijfjes aan te schaffen. Naast audio is het ook mogelijk om extra informatie zoals videoclips, afbeeldingen en tekst toe te voegen, bijvoorbeeld om merchandise te verkopen. Bedrijven als Toshiba en Samsung zijn al druk bezig met het ontwerpen van producten rond dit schijfje en rond het einde van dit jaar moet dit alles worden geintroduceerd:

"Many of the features of DataPlay speak directly to the power of convergence of the physical and digital channels with each supporting the other," remarked Sami Valkonen, Senior Vice President of New Media and Business Development for BMG Distribution. "We have long seen this cross-leveraging as a wonderful opportunity and are excited to support DataPlay in making this a reality."

Leading consumer electronic developers, such as Toshiba Corporation and Samsung Electronics, are manufacturing portable music players/recorders, digital cameras, PC peripherals, PDAs and portable games that will support the DataPlay format. As a result of these strategic relationships, DataPlay will extend its reach to hundreds of thousands of potential consumers when the product goes to market this year.

Het doel van Intel en een groot aantal andere bedrijven om binnen vijf jaar met extreme UV straling chips te bakken is weer een stuk dichterbij gekomen nu IBM lid is geworden van het EUV LLC consortium. Het is echter nog steeds niet zeker of de doelstellingen bereikt kunnen worden en het bedrijf blijft daarom ook betrokken bij een project van Nikon waarbij ELP (parallel electron-beam projection lithography) wordt gebruikt voor het maken van kleinere transistors. Het is in ieder geval duidelijk dat de huidige technologieën het niet veel langer zullen uithouden en dat is een probleem dat niet door een bedrijf kan worden opgelost:

IBM is supporting a parallel NGL effort, electron-beam projection lithography, that draws upon the company's many years of using electron-beam systems for ICs used in its mainframe computers. Gomba said Nikon has come up with ideas to boost the throughput of the EPL systems — ideas that Nikon is not ready to disclose at this time — that would reduce the "cost of ownership, or cost of lithography, for EPL."

[...] "EUV has a fair amount of industry support, which is one reason why we are joining," said John Warlaumont, director of silicon technology at IBM. "Both EPL and EUV have their place, and the time is now to work hard on these technologies. I believe we will need to have an NGL solution for the sub-70-nm technology node. It is very important that we do have a solution. . . . This is not something that a single company can do."

Chuck Gwyn, director of the EUV LLC, said other companies are in negotiations to join the consortium. Asked if Nikon and Canon might join, Gwyn said there have been serious discussions with the two Japan-based lithography vendors, but declined to be more specific.

Het Nederlandse ASML wordt door het consortium als een belangrijke speler gezien, maar in het artikel wordt gemeld dat dit bedrijf op het moment een beetje overhoop ligt met de Amerikaanse regering. De geplande overname van de Silicon Valley Group is namelijk uitgesteld door de Amerikanen, omdat het op te kopen bedrijf onder andere werkt aan werkt aan optica voor spionage-satelieten en dus onder de nationale veiligheid valt. De mannen van HardwareCental hebben een stuk tekst geschreven over het GigaByte 8TX moederbord voor Pentium 4 processors, de 8TX. Deze is voorzien van vijf keer PCI, CNR, AGP Pro en vier plaatsen voor PC800 RDRAM. Andere features zijn on-board 4 kanaals geluid van Creative en DualBIOS. De overklokmogelijkheden zijn echter beperkt, er kan slechts uit een beperkt aantal FSB instellingen worden gekozen en dat moet ook nog eens een keer met jumpers gedaan worden. In het BIOS is het wel mogelijk om de multiplier aan te passen, maar dat heeft weinig nut omdat Intel deze op slot heeft gezet. Ook het voltage veranderen is geen optie. Uit de verschillende benchmarks bleek ook nog eens dat het bord iets minder presteerde dan Asus' ontwerp. Het kwaliteit/kosten-plaatje van deze plank is echter wel een stuk beter:

With a competitive retail price under $230, GigaByte's GA-8TX offers quality and reliability for an entry-level cost when compared to other Pentium 4 offerings. For those interested in maximum stability with minimal issues, the 8TX proves to be a more than competitive solution. However, those seeking a motherboard for maximum overclocking potential would be better served by the P4T from ASUS. Other cost factors to consider when upgrading to or building a P4 system is the need for an ATX12V compliant power supply. Still, the greatest aspect to consider is in regards to the still staggering costs associated with the Pentium 4 processor itself. The average price for a Pentium 4 1.5 GHz chip still exceeds $550, whereas the performance comparative AMD 1.2 GHz Athlon can be readily found for about half the price of Intel's flagship processor. However, for those seeking a quality Pentium 4 motherboard solution, GigaByte's GA-8TX offers the best in regards to superb quality and competitive cost.

Digit Life heeft twee plaatjes online gezet van Suma's nieuwe Platium GeForce2 MX SIF Turbo kaart. In deze naam zitten drie van de opvallende features verwerkt, waaronder de zwarte kleur en de mogelijkheid om de kaart door middel van een jumper van de standaard 175/166MHz instellingen naar de turbo-settings van 183/200MHz te gooien. Dit wordt mogelijk gemaakt door het gebruik van 5ns RAM chips van Hyundai. Het laatste belangrijke punt is het gebruik van het Suma Individual analog Filter, een speciaal ontworpen circuit dat de beeldkwaliteit moet verbeteren, met name in 2D toepassingen. De kaart zou op dit moment te koop zijn, maar een prijs wordt niet genoemd:

Maar liefst 23 verschillende mensen (waarvan Vohaul de eerste was) dropten het bericht dat 3DMark 2001 vandaag uitkomt in de nieuws-queue. Nadat MadOnion de gamers eerst een paar weken lekker heeft gemaakt met erg nasty screenshots is het nu dan echt tijd voor de final release. Tussen 16:00 en 18:00 uur PST (Pacific Standard Time, 01:00 en 03:00 Nederlandse tijd) moet de benchmark op MadOnion's downloadpage te vinden zijn.

3DMark 2001 zal waarschijnlijk genoeg eye-candy bevatten om je arme systeempje tot het uiterste te teisteren. Waarschijnlijk zal een flink 1GHz systeem en een GeForce2 Ultra of GeForce3 nodig zijn om een beetje acceptable framerates te behalen...

Drie kleine plankjes dus, die vooral voor OEM's interessant zullen zijn voor het bouwen van 'entry-level' systemen.

Got Apex? heeft in deze review de twee momenteel verkrijgbare AMD Athlon 1,2GHz processoren met elkaar vergeleken, de 1,2GHz Athlon-B met een FSB van 200MHz en de 1,2GHz Athlon-C met een FSB van 266MHz. Beide processoren worden met elkaar vergeleken op een moederbord dat is voorzien van de AMD 760 chipset en PC2100 DDR SDRAM. Daarbij blijkt al direct dat de B core eenvoudig - via het verhogen van de FSB - te overclocken is, in dit geval tot 1404MHz bij een FSB van 234MHz. De gebruikte C cores bleken daarentegen - althans in deze situatie - niet overclockbaar te zijn.

In de benchmarks wordt de overclockte B-processor vergeleken met z'n niet-overclockte C-zusje. Helaas neemt men de prestaties van SDRAM in de benchmarks niet mee, er wordt alleen getest met DDR geheugen. Conclusie is dat de Athlon-B erg goede prestaties aflevert, zeker als je 'm overclockt. De Athlon-C blijkt met name te excelleren in de geheugen-benchmarks waar 'ie een winst van meer dan 10% kan boeken op de Athlon-B. De reviewers zijn behoorlijk onder de indruk van beide processoren en dat brengt hen dan ook tot de volgende slotconclusie:

The Athlon 1.2GHz Thunderbirds deliver outstanding performance for the here and now. Sure, there will be new cores to come from AMD, but they have really hit the bull's-eye with this chip. With the introduction of dozens of DDR mainboards, an AMD platform would appear to be the fastest solution available on the market.

To the matter of selecting which of the two chip models is right for you, if you want to gamble and try your hand at overclocking, go with the "B" 200MHz FSB chips. If you just want to pop a CPU in and watch her fly, grab the "C" model and a couple sticks of PC2100 DDR SDRAM. We recommend Mushkin. In our testing, we were utterly amazed at the performance offered by combining an Athlon 1.2GHz 266FSB chip with an AMD 760 mainboard and PC2100 DDR SDRAM.

Even more surprising was the low cost of such a set up. Sure the Palomino chip from AMD looks to be impressive, as do the 1.333 Athlon Thunderbirds, but if you keep waiting for the next big thing you may never have a rig.

If you are in the market for an upgrade you can't beat an Athlon 1.2GHz whether it be the "B" or the "C", though we favor the "C".

Een Scandinavisch onderzoek, grotendeels gefinancierd door Intel, heeft het met behulp van nieuwe technieken voor elkaar gekregen om 1Gbit chips te maken. Deze chips zijn (nog) niet zo snel als de huidige SDRAMmetjes, maar bieden wel veel hogere opslagcapaciteit en lijken hun inhoud niet kwijt te raken als de stroom uitvalt - ideaal voor mensen die snel in en uit "standby" stand willen komen. Het bedrijf denkt vooral aan toepassingen zoals waar nu flash geheugen gebruikt wordt, maar dan in grotere hoeveelheden en veel goedkoper. Dan moet je dus niet alleen denken aan betaalbare geheugenkaartjes voor in je digitale camera, maar ook aan flash-disken - vrijwel onverslijtbare "HDs" gemaakt met stapels geheugenchips. Binnenkort beslist Intel of het onderzoek verder gaat, dus verwacht ze voorlopig nog niet bij de fotowinkel-om-de-hoek:

TILBURG - Een Scandinavisch onderzoek, waarin Intel veel geld heeft gestoken, heeft geleid tot een stabiele 1Gb geheugenchip die gebruik maakt van plastic film. Op korte termijn moet Intel beslissen of het de volgende stap zet in dit project, die neerkomt op het ontwerp en testen van een geselecteerd product en het vaststellen van de beste productietechnieken. In juni wordt namelijk de eerste fase van het onderzoeksproject afgerond.
