Bij Hardwareinfo.net is vandaag een review neergezet over de Firestorm Dual Power gamepad van Thrustmaster. Deze gamepad is in het bezit van een flinke lading knoppen, twee analoge stuurknuppeltjes en twee motoren die voor een beetje Force Feedback zorgen. Volgens de reviewer is dit gecombineerd met prettige drivers en software wat hem de adviesprijs van 100 piek zeker waard maakt:

Al met al kan ik eigenlijk geen echte minpunten ontdekken aan de Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Power gamepad. Hij werkt zeer goed, ligt lekker in de hand, en ziet er degelijk en zeker niet goedkoop uit. Ook met de installatie heb ik eigenlijk geen minpunten kunnen ontdekken. Dus als je op zoek bent naar een goede gamepad, eentje waarmee je meer mee wilt kunnen dan een gewone ‘knopjes’ gamepad, dan is dit absoluut een goede keuze.

Geslaagde poging dus van Thrustmaster. En daarom is de Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Power zijn adviesprijs van Fl. 99,95 (incl. BTW) zeer zeker waard.

Bij OCWorkbench is een wat groter plaatje te vinden van de Abit TH7 i850 Pentium 4 plank. De informatie over de layout was al eerder langsgekomen, volgens de nieuwe geruchten zal hij in deze vorm begin april beschikbaar worden:

ABIT is about to launch the TH7-RAID.TH7-RAID is based on Intel 850 (ICH2) chipset. It supports Pentium4 CPU (socket 423). It supports a FSB of 400Mhz. 4 x 184 pins RAMBUS (PC600,PC800) up to a max of 2GB.

This board also supports RAID using the familiar Highpoint controller and supports RAID 0,1,0+1.

On board is the Intel 82559 PCI connector for 10/100Mbps support. There are 4 IDE supporting 33/66/100. 1 AGP, 5 PCI, 1 CNR, and AC97 audio, there is also software monitoring for fan speed etc.

Well, DEBUG device make it to TH7 at last. This is similar to those on EPoX boards.

Th7 will be released in early April. Watch out for it.

Als dit bericht van The Register klopt kunnen we, in tegenstelling tot deze info, tóch wel al snel met de nieuwe AMD Athlon 'Palomino' gaan spelen. Volgens een interne roadmap van begin deze maand zal de Palomino namelijk nog in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar in productie gaan, op een snelheid van 1,2GHz (in plaats van een introductie in juni @ 1,4GHz):

AMD may not have delayed Palomino, ClawHammer and co. after all. The updated AMD desktop processor roadmap published yesterday by Germany's c't magazine doesn't appear to be quite as up-to-date as we had first supposed.

That, at least, is what a presentation AMD's president and COO, Hector Ruiz, made to the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Semiconductor and Systems Conference on 6 March suggests. Along with much pro-AMD fluff, the presentation contains a processor roadmap which pretty much matches the one we saw last December.

According to both, Palomino, the Athlon design that will succeed the current core, Thunderbird, will ship Q1 2001 at speeds of over 1.2GHz, and not next July at 1.4GHz as indicated by the c't roadmap. [break]
Het is nog even afwachten welke roadmap we nu moeten geloven, maar een snelle introductie @ 1,2GHz en een upgrade naar 1,4GHz in het tweede kwartaal is vrij aannemelijk.[/break] A note from our chums over at c't suggests a reconciliation: their roadmap comes not from AMD but from a mobo maker. "Our experience is that those third-party roadmaps are ofen more precise... wait'n see."

And it occurs to us that the two versions are not entirely incompatible. Palomino going into volume production this quarter at over 1.2GHz doesn't mean that the 1.4GHz version isn't going to ship in June (as per the c't article) or July (as per the mysterious roadmap).

Bij Got Apex is vandaag een interview online gezet met Mark DeFrere van AMD's Product Marketing afdeling. Het verhaal geeft ons helaas weinig spannende info, maar je kunt er wel wat lezen over HyperTransport technology, AMD positie in de notebook-markt, de AMD 760MP chipset en de concurrentie met Intel. G|A?: The notebook computer market is a sector that is growing in popularity as their size and price shrink. This same sector is also painfully absent of Athlon and Duron products. When can we expect to see laptops powered by an Athlon or Duron? What kind of technology does AMD have to counter Intel's Speedstep technology, etc?

AMD: We expect to be shipping volume quantities of the Mobile Palomino Athlon's this quarter. We will start sampling the Mobile Morgan Duron's this quarter as well. As far as when can you expect to see Notebooks powered by Athlon's, that is up to the manufacturers.

AMD notebooks can be equipped with AMD PowerNow!(TM) technology. AMD PowerNow!(TM) technology is a second generation power-management technology. It offers performance on demand. In other words, when running on battery, AMD PowerNow!(TM) technology will scale the processors speed and voltage as the running applications warrant. This can lengthen battery life by 30%. AMD PowerNow!(TM) technology also requires no user configuration to function properly, and will operate automatically with Windows applications.


G|A?: Will we see DDR notebooks anytime in the near future?

AMD: Well, considering PC133 requires 3.3v to operate and DDR requires only 2.5v, I would say it is a strong possibility.


G|A?: The way the economy is now in the US, we see that computer sales are down. Now since Intel has already won the largest chunk of the market, they need computer sales to go up again in order to stay the course, whereas AMD only needs to take away some of that market share. How has AMD planned on executing such endeavors at chewing away at Chipzilla's market dominance?

AMD: We strongly believe that "sticking to our knitting" is the key. By keeping our focus on our processors, chipsets and flash memory technologies we will continue to have the best products on the market. Concentrating on delivering to our roadmap is our top priority. With the Mobile Athlon and Mobile Duron, we will be present as a top to bottom solution in notebooks. The Palomino will offer one and two-way solutions using the 760MP chipset. The 760MP chipset offers point-to-point transfer for both processors as each CPU has its own bus. AMD is confident that the performance offered by the 760MP will translate into many new OEM wins.

AnandTech vertelt ons in dit artikel over de nieuwe SuperSavage Mobile 3D Accelerator van S3. Met deze, op de bijna bejaarde Savage4 core gebaseerde chip, wil het bedrijf de strijd aangaan met de nVidia GeForce2 Go en de ATi Mobility Radeon. De belangrijkste vernieuwingen die zijn aangepast t.o.v. de Savage MX/IX chips zijn een 0.18micron productie proces, verdubbeling van het aantal texture units en een verhoogde kloksnelheid naar 143MHz. In de praktijk moet dit een 50-75% betere performance opleveren, oftewel 40 à 50 fps in 800x600. De geheugenbus komt in variaties van 128 SDR, 64 bit SDR of 64 bit DDR en maakt gebruik van 8 of 16MB geheugen. Overigens is ook het 2D gedeelte opgefrist; de SuperSavage maakt hiervoor gebruik van de geflopte Savage2000 2D core. Dankzij DuoView kan er verder een extra CRT/LCD monitor of een TV-scherm gebruikt worden.

Anand concludeert dat de chip, als hij dadelijk in het derde kwartaal leverbaar wordt, een redelijke kans van slagen heeft. De concurrentie in dit segment zal echter snel toenemen, en ook de deal die het bedrijf met VIA heeft zal een grote rol spelen:

The SuperSavage's lifetime will be longer than a graphics accelerator in the high-performance desktop market segment, but it will still be no more than a year. This also means that in less than a year, a replacement will have to be ready and shipping in production quantities to pick up the SuperSavage's duties.

The obvious routes for advancement with the SuperSavage come with another die shrink, hopefully to 0.13-micron however more likely down to 0.15-micron. With that die shrink will obviously come a higher clocked core, more power saving features, and maybe even more pipelines.

The problem that S3 is going to run into here is that sooner or later, the competition in the mobile market is going to be much like the competition that existed in the desktop 3D accelerator arena not too long ago. While the rules are a bit different in the mobile market, with power consumption and heat being much larger concerns, the outcome will inevitably be the same. The market has the potential to be dominated by a handful of companies, forcing those that aren't able to keep up with the competition out of the market looking for other avenues for their products.

Storage Review heeft haar licht eens laten schijnen over de Seagate Cheetah 36XL U160 SCSI harddisk en daar deze review van gebakken. De Cheetah 36XL is als gezegd een U160 SCSI schijf die 10000 rondjes per minuut draait en is voorzien van 4MB cache. Er zijn momenteel drie versies op de markt met respectievelijk 9,2, 18,4 en 36,7GB. Deze laatste wordt in deze review bekeken.

De 36,7GB grote drive beschikt over vier platters en da's minder dan z'n voorgangers. Dat impliceert ook dat 'ie koeler blijft dan z'n voorgangers en dat is natuurlijk voor de tweaker mooi meegenomen. Uiteraard worden de diverse benchmarks op de Cheetah losgelaten en de schijf blijkt het goed te doen: in alle benchmarks blijkt 'ie met de besten (waaronder de Seagate Cheetah X15, de Fujitsu MAJ3 en de Quantum Atlas 10k II) mee te kunnen, zonder ze overigens te kunnen verslaan. De scores zijn echter op alle fronten constant en dat telt natuurlijk ook.

De reviewers zijn zeer tevreden over de Cheetah 36XL, die eigenlijk als enig nadeel z'n prijs heeft, zeker als je die afzet tegen de prijs van de Quantum Atlas 10k II:

Overall, despite its "evolutionary" nature, the Cheetah 36XL does an admirable job in improving the performance (and, as one hopes from reduced part counts, reliability) of Seagate's celebrated line. A quick glance at StorageReview.com sponsor Hyper Microsystems reveals that while the 36XL's only slight more expensive than the Cheetah 36LP, an Atlas 10k II may be had for significantly less. This isn't surprising- after all, the 36XL is a brand-spanking-new unit while the 10k II has been around for a while. Seagate's pricing may be come more competitive after a few months. When it comes to absolute performance, however, the Cheetah 36XL establishes itself as the 10k RPM drive to beat.

Het Texaanse bedrijf InfraWorks heeft goed nieuws voor platenlabels: InfraWorks heeft namelijk een stukje software ontwikkeld waarmee copyright-beschermd materiaal niet is te kraken. Het bedrijf dat gespecialisieerd is in Digitale Rights Management (DRM) beweert dat InTether beter werkt dan concurrerende technieken, omdat de software ook controle houdt over de bestanden als ze eenmaal in gebruik zijn.

Met InTether kan een copyrighthouder precies van een bestand aangeven wat een gebruiker er mee mag doen als hij het eenmaal ontvangen heeft. Men kan bepalen hoevaak bijvoorbeeld een Word-document mag worden gelezen en of het mag worden uitgeprint. Ook kun je er Mission Impossible mee spelen door het bestand na een bepaalde tijd te laten vernietigen . Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel van WebWereld:

Voor dit alles is een 'InTether-packager' nodig waarmee het bestand wordt verspreid en een slechts 300 Kbytes grote receiver die kan worden meegestuurd met het bestand. Deze ontvanger wordt diep in het Windows-besturingssysteem verankerd en zou nagenoeg onmogelijk kunnen worden verwijderd. De software doet vervolgens zijn werk op de achtergrond. Als iemand bijvoorbeeld een met InTether beschermd Word-document wil inzien, kan hij gewoon Word gebruiken.

Het enige wat hij dan wel merkt is dat bepaalde functies – zoals kopiëren, knippen en plakken – zijn uitgeschakeld. Tegenover Inside.com zegt CEO George Friedman dat er 11 beveiligingslagen zijn, waaronder uiteraard een encryptielaag. In tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de kopieerbeveiliging voor DVD's is InTether eenvoudig te upgraden. Een gebruiker wordt dan verplicht een nieuwe versie te draaien.

Intether werkt alleen op Wintel-systemen en is geschikt voor Word, Excel, RealJukebox, Windows Media Player en Adode Acrobat. Bij Sharky Extreme is een roundup verschenen tussen een zevental muismatten die speciaal ontworpen zijn voor gamers. Deze muismatten onderscheiden zich van de normale 5 piek matjes door een groter oppervlak, een lekker glad oppervlak en natuurlijk een groter prijskaartje. Which do you pick? Well, it's tricky, but it mostly depends what you want. Without a doubt, the sUrface 1030 is the best pad overall thanks to its two different mouse surfaces and its useful mouse cord clip. The choice between the Everglide Giganta and the Ratpad really depends on what kind surface you want (the smoother Everglide surface or the slightly rougher Ratpad surface) and whether or not you want a curve across part of the bottom of the mat or across all of it. Of course, if you want a thick, solid mouse pad that will last but aren't too keen on the plus sized Ratpad or Giganta, your only real choice is the regular Everglide.

Finally, fashion victims are gonna be all over the gorgeous IceMat like white on rice at the cost of a slight loss of accuracy in games, but my personal choice for best actual suface is the Wingman pad, although it's not quite as durable as the other pads in this roundup. There really is no clear winner for everyone as different aspects to each pad will appeal to different people, although if you can't decide which to go for the versatile fUnc 1030 is probably your best bet. Take your pick!
