Transmeta komt met 'mobile' Linux Midori

Het heeft wat langer geduurd dan voorspeld, maar vandaag heeft Transmeta dan toch haar Mobile Linux gelanceerd. Mobile Linux zoals we 't gemakshalve maar hebben genoemd gaat in de werkelijkheid Linux Midori heten. Midori is Japans voor 'groen', en Transmeta gebruikt deze naam om te onderstrepen hoe energiezuinig haar Linux - natuurlijk in combinatie met Transmeta's processoren - wel is. Midori Linux is vanaf vandaag te downloaden en is vrijgegeven onder de bekende GNU General Public License, zodat iedereen het zonder meer kan en mag gebruiken en natuurlijk er ook aan mag bijdragen. Hier een deel van de tekst van het e-mail bericht van Transmeta dat ik eerder vandaag mocht ontvangen:

Transmeta Corporation today announced that it has 'open sourced' its Mobile Linux operating system, known as Midori Linux, to allow industry-wide input for its further development.

The source code changes Transmeta made to Linux are being open sourced as part of the "Midori Linux Project." The term 'project' reflects Transmeta's intention that the operating system's continued development include open industry participation.

"Midori Linux will be attractive for any application that can benefit from full Linux compatibility, low power, low thermals and a small footprint," said David R. Ditzel, vice chairman and chief technology officer, Transmeta Corporation. "We consider Midori Linux to be a technology building block for use by Transmeta, our customers and the open source community. Through this announcement we are inviting everyone to participate in the operating system's evolution."

This x86 compatible version of Linux is suitable for a broad range of applications, not only those that are mobile. Midori Linux has already been successfully implemented by some of Transmeta's major customers in unique product designs. One such product, the Gateway Connected TouchPad with instant AOL access, is a fanless, cool- and quiet-running Internet appliance that was a "Best of Show" award winner at Comdex Fall 2000. Other products, such as ultra-dense servers recently announced by Transmeta customers, will also benefit from the operating system's power-conserving and footprint enhancements.

The name Midori Linux is based on the Japanese word for the color green - midori - and was chosen to reflect the environmentally friendly aspects of a low power Linux operating system.

Weet iemand want nou precies het 'groene' is aan deze Linux versie, want ik zie wel allemaal dingen als powersaving en mobile applications staan, maar niet echt concreet wat het besturingssysteem anders doet dan Windows of een andere Linux distro.

Lijkt me dat het specifiek afgestemd is op de software gedeelte van de Crusoe CPU. Door zo de efficiency te verhogen scheelt al wattage, en verhoogt performance.

Tock komt er ook een 'gewone' versie voor de x86 processoren uit, dat betekent dat ze zich gaan mengen in de strijd tussen de Distro's van Linux (Redhat, Suse enzo) en op zich is daar helemaal niks mis maar, maar dan moeten ze dit produkt niet gaan verkopen alsof mijn Laptop dadelijk 5x zo lang met zijn batterij doet, want ik heb gewoon speedstepping ed. en veel langer dan een halfuur kan ik niet rekken (dus als ik mijn systeem idle hou), dan kunnen zij dat ook niet.

It's theoretically possible... but it wouldn't be a practical use of your computer. Midori is meant to be configured and built on a development system, from which it is then installed onto a compact flash. That flash-disk would be used as the boot device for a smaller computer.

't Is dus niet bedoeld als normaal OS, zo lijkt het, maar als ingebouwd OS in bijvoorbeeld 'wireless web pads' en 'home audio components'.

Toch geven ze als een van de toepassingen aan dat ze dit OS in servers willen toe passen, en flashkaarten in servers is voor mij iets nieuws (op zich is het idee wel cool, zeker als je er niet naar kan schrijven heb je een (bijna) 100% secure systeem )

Natuurlijk blijft de optimalisatie nuttig, maar de grote beloftes vind ik persoonlijk nogal vaag en misschien zelfs wat ver gezocht.

Voor servers is het toch erg handig, zeker als je (beowulf) clusters gaan bouwen met redelijk goedkope transmeta servertjes. De warmteproductie zou met intel/AMD een behoorlijk probleem vormen.

Met de 'groene' transmetaatjes blijf je dan toch lekker schaalbaar.

Komt op mij meer over als de ambitie om grote dingen te doen met de bekendheid die ze krijgen doordat Linus Torvalds bij ze werkt. Hype surfen heet dat. Blijkt meestal achteraf gebakken lucht te zijn.

Zo blijft er meer bandbreedte over op je electriciteitsnet om te downloaden/surfen!!!

Conclusie, Transmeta helpt om (in de toekomst weliswaar) onze bandbreedte hoog te houden

Dit klinkt erg goed voor m'n P133 leptobje... kijken wattie doet!

Draai er nu Debian 2.2 op, maar sommige typische laptop dingen werken nog niet echt naar behoren, (probably caused by my own incompetence )hopelijk gaat dat met deze 'mobiele' versie beter.
