Bij Gamers Depot is een review verschenen van de nieuwe Asus P3V4X plank gebaseerd op de Apollo Pro 133A chipset van VIA. Winnen van een i820 + Rambus combo doet-ie niet, maar uit o.a. deze review en Anand's Roundup bleek al dat het verschil met een BX mobo bijna is verdwenen.

While it's interesting to note the almost dead-even scores in our Quake 3 testing, the RDRAM does start to pull ahead under both Quake 2 Crusher Demo, and the 3DMark 2000.

This can likely be attributed to the way ASUS has incorporated the VIA technology as we're quite aware that there are other sites who've tested other mainboards based on this chip that perform better. If you look at our findings using PC133 SDRAM on the ASUS Riser card with the ASUS P3C-E I820 motherboard, you'll see that the scores are a little more even on the latter two benchmarks.

It's great to see that VIA has helped us afford an alternative to the I820, althoughwe're somewhat disappointed by the results. However, I don't think the performance delta is worth the $900.00 you'd have to shell out for a 128MB RDRAM module.

Computable schrijft dat Intel en diens afnemers ernstig gezichtsverlies lijden door bugs in de drie i820 en i840 server borden waarvan Intel de release twee week geleden plotseling schrapte. De borden bleken een probleem te hebben met de Memory Translator Hub en zullen nu 2 maand te laat worden gelanceerd:

De problemen gooien de planning van Intels klanten verder overhoop. Er zijn al langer problemen met het ontwerp en de massaproductie van Intel-chips. Bovendien heeft het bedrijf voor dit jaar meer belangrijke projecten op stapel staan, met name de eerste 64-bit processor Itanium en de zware 32-bit processor Willamette. Zowel Intel als diens afnemers, de fabrikanten van zware servers, lijden gezichtsverlies. Ze prediken al geruime tijd de toenemende betrouwbaarheid en kracht van hun x86-producten. Analisten plaatsen nu steeds meer vraagtekens bij de opmars van standaard x86-systemen naar de bovenkant van de markt, die grotendeels in handen is van leveranciers van bedrijfseigen Unix-systemen en mainframes.

Webwereld meldt dat volgens een onderzoek van de Stanford en Duquesne universiteiten tenminste 200.000 internet gebruikers verslaafd zijn aan het bezoeken van pornosites:

Er zouden ongeveer 200.000 verslaafden aan cyberseks zijn. Miljoenen internetters lopen volgens het onderzoeksteam eenzelfde risico. Een verslaafde wordt gezien als iemand die minimaal elf uur per week sekssites of seksueel georiënteerde chatrooms bezoekt. Bovendien moest het onderzochte publiek hoog scoren op een opgestelde vragenlijst.

Het onderzoek werd in de lente van 1998 verricht onder bezoekers van de MSNBC-sites. Meer dan 9000 internetters tussen de 18 en 90 jaar deden op vrijwillige basis mee. Iets meer dan 1 procent zou volgens de definities van Cooper verslaafd zijn.

Bij Storage Review is een review geplaatst van een 20GB grote Barracuda ATA II schijf van Seagate, die begin deze maand werd aangekondigd. Dit 7200rpm model geniet van 2MB cache en is een goede concurrent voor de Maxtor DiamondMax:

We assume that the unit folks want to see the Barracuda ATA II contrasted against is the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40. We're amazed with the incredible race to obtain the new Maxtor drive outlined in usenet newsgroups as well as StorageReview.com's own Discussion Forums. Does the 'Cuda 2 change our choice?

Low level results taken from the new Seagate compare very favorably against the Plus 40. We measured a maximum sequential transfer rate in the outer zone of 29.6 MB/sec, a figure just a hair slower than the Maxtor's 30.2 MB/sec. Access time, however, clocks in at 12.8 milliseconds, a full 1.4ms below the figure turned in by the Plus 40 (remember, lower is better when it comes to access time). Let's take a look at how these figures translate into higher-level performance.

In Windows 9x, the 'Cuda 2 is every bit the equal of the Plus 40. The Business Disk WinMark places the Barracuda ahead of the DiamondMax by a negligible margin of 1%. An even larger statistical coincidence occurs in the High-End Disk WinMark, where both drives clock in at exactly 13,933 KB/sec.

It's in Maxtor's traditional favorite playground, Windows NT, that the Plus 40 breaks loose. Here the Seagate drive trails the Maxtor offering by about 5% in both Business and High-End tests. Though still very close, it's a more significant difference than measured in Win9x. ThreadMark tests exhibit a bit more of a gap, measuring out the Barracuda 8%-12% below the DiamondMax.

Reink schrijft: "De grote geheugenleveranciers in Nederland hebben vanochtend de geheugenprijzen met circa 30% omhooggegooid. Het dieptepunt is dus helaas al weer voorbij".

Door de aantrekkende supplies van PIII processors lijkt de vraag naar geheugen chips ook weer te zijn toegenomen, met als gevolg dat de prijs gestegen is. The Register schreef dit gisteren:

The Register bericht dat Rambus Inc. op een Rambus conferentie in Japan een nieuwe packaging technologie heeft aangekondigd waarmee de 'verpakkingskosten' van een Rambus module met 50% verlaagd kunnen worden. Da's alvast een stap in de goede richting:

The packaging in Rambus RIMM modules, which includes an expensive spreader, is one reason why the memory has been so expensive in the past, as Peter McWilliams, an Intel Fellow, explained to us at the Intel Developer Forum last month.

Now Tessera, a supplier of packaging technology, has come to Rambus' rescue, by introducing a technology which will sharply cut the costs of packaging for the very pricey RIMMs.

The process, known as Zinger 4, cuts the packaging costs of RIMMs by over 50 per cent, Tessera claims. That, in combination with other cost cutting methods Rambus is adopting, will further reduce the cost of the still very pricey modules.

If Rambus drops its royalties, as it broadly hinted it might do, that will further help to reduce costs.

De eerder aangekondigde netwerk upgrade van Supwerweb begint zijn vruchten af te werpen. Niels de Koning van Nielsonline 0800 Internet Nieuws meldt dat de snelheid duidelijk verbeterd is. In de daarop volgende reacties wordt al een downstream van 7,4KB en een ping in Quake II van 55 gemeld:

Tillman Steinbrecher van The Heatsink Guide doet verslag van het cooling nieuws op de CeBIT 2000. Errug interessant lijkt me deze kant-en-klare watercooler van het duitse bedrijf Madex:

Madex presented their watercooler on CeBIT 2000. The unit presented seemed to be a relatively early prototype; they did not show any radiator yet. What's interesting about the Madex watercooler is that with their system, the CPU core is in direct contact with the water - whether this makes sense performance-wise remains to be seen. Super7.net heeft een review gepost van de Tennmax VivaK7-STF Athlon heatsink. In vergelijking met een GlobalWin FJK50 bleek de Tennmax tot 7ºC beter te koelen:

As you can see the VivaK7-STF out performed the GlobalWin FJK50 by as much as 7ºC (which works out to approx. 12ºF)! This is what you want to look for when you start to think about overclocking.

It is true that the VivaK7-STF generates more noise but considering that it has 2 fans instead of one, that is to be expected. We'll be taking a look at Tennmax' Lasagna BGA Coolers in the near future but I have to say, if the VivaK7-STF is any indication I'm very impressed with the quality of Tennmax' components!

Heise Online brengt het nieuws dat Asus op de CeBIT als eerste fabrikant een AGP Pro videokaart heeft aankondigd. AGP Pro maakt een hogere stroomopname mogelijk, iets wat hard nodig is met het toenemende stroomverbruik van de steeds complexere videochippies. De nieuwe kaart van Asus heet AGP-V6600Pro en heeft 64Meg geheugen. De naam V6600 doet mij vermoeden dat het hier om normaal SDR SDRAM gaat:

Op de site van GLSetup is te lezen dat de makers een nieuwe beta versie gereleased hebben met de nodige updates. GLSetup is een proggie dat voor zover ik weet als eerste met Quake 3 meegelevert werd en voor jou als gebruiker elke keer de nieuwste drivers binnensleept van de videokaart die je hebt en je dus veel tijd kan besparen bij het vinden van de juiste drivers, wat voor de meeste tweakers overigens niet echt een probleem zal zijn maar meer een dagelijkse bezigheid

Hardware One heeft een review van de AOpen AX6C i820+Rambus plank online gebracht. Het bord heeft 3 RIMM slots, een configuratie die in tegenstelling tot de Intel Vancouver probleemloos werkt op de AX6C. Voor overklokkers geeft AOpen de mogelijkheid om de busspeeds en Rambus multiplier vanuit het BIOS in te stellen:

The Award BIOS was a joy to work with. First off, the board is jumperless in design and FSB speeds are fully controllable from within the Award 6.00PG setup.

With the entire band of FSBs you can choose from 100 / 105 / 114 / 120 / 124 / 128 / 133 / 138 / 143 / 148 / 150 / 152.5 / 155 / 160MHz, you will know that overclockers are really taken seriously. The good thing we have we have come to know is that RDRAM runs at a speed determined by a multiplier of the FSB, thus there is a certain potential in overclocking the expensive RDRAM investment. So thankfully, Aopen went a step further to decouple the multiplier lock for the RDRAM, making all the six multipliers 2.0x, 2.25x, 2.66x, 3.0x, 3.55x, and 4.0x usable.

The only thing missing from the BIOS setup is voltage tweak, that appeared to be greyed out.

Planet Multimedia meldt dat KPN voor 41 miljoen gulden een 70% aandeel in HCCNet heeft gekocht. Het geld dat door de deal wordt opgeleverd wil de HCC weer verder investeren:

KPN en HCC beginnen een joint venture waarin HCCnet wordt ondergebracht. KPN verkrijgt hierin 70 procent van de aandelen, HCC 30 procent. HCCnet heeft inmiddels 75.000, veelal ervaren internetters die zich tot de ICT-voorhoede in Nederland mogen rekenen.

[...] Volgens een bron in de zakelijke markt heeft KPN voor de overname van HCCnet 41 miljoen gulden betaald. Dat zou een schijntje zijn, leuk voor de clubkas maar in de huidige markt van waarderingen van tenminste 7.000 gulden per gratis abonnee (die veelal nauwelijks surft) zou KPN zeker op een bedrag van 8 nullen (meer dan 100 miljoen) terechtgekomen zijn. HCC verdeelt de opbrengst niet onder de leden, maar investeert dat weer. Wellicht komt er goedkoop ADSL voor de leden.

AnandTech heeft een artikel gepost met een overzicht van alle Athlon moederborden die op de CeBIT werden gepresenteerd. Ik ben er zaterdag zelf geweest en heb zelf gezien dat dit er behoorlijk veel waren. Wat betreft de nieuwe KX133 borden verwacht ik dat de AOpen AK72 één van de beste borden gaat worden:

One interesting thing is that AOpen stuck the AMR slot on the end of the motherboard, although they may decide to kill the AMR slot in the end. The beauty of putting the AMR slot on the end of the motherboard like that is that it doesn't prevent you from having a full 5/1/1 expansion slot configuration. Most manufacturers simply place the AMR slot next to the AGP slot, other than Tyan that outfitted their i810 board with a shared AMR slot stuck on the end of the board like this.

AOpen has always been known for their high quality products, and as the second largest motherboard manufacturer in the world they have a huge reputation to keep up. The AK-72 shouldn't be a disappointing solution if AOpen sticks to tradition, in fact it should be one of the better Athlon motherboards on the market.

AOpen has won more Editor's Choice awards here on AnandTech than any other manufacturer, so we're definitely anxious to get the AK-72 in our hands.

Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral was zo aardig om voor ons tweakers een guide in elkaar te knutselen over hoe je je pc vooral niet in elkaar moet zetten. Hij geeft hierin een aantal aardige tips die zo goed klinken dat je ze als echte tweaker bijna toch in de praktijk zou brengen

Hier bijvoorbeeld een stukje over hoe je het beste je bios kunt flashen:

If all else has failed and the system boots normally, the next best thing to do is 'configure' the BIOS. By that I mean flashing it with a random file from your harddisk. If a flash BIOS is 'flashed' with the wrong data, such as a BIOS for a completely different motherboard, or, more effectively, with any random file on your harddisk, the motherboard will, upon rebooting, cease to function until its BIOS chip is physically removed and re-programmed or replaced with one holding the correct data. Using a somewhat older flash utility is the best way to go about it, as these usually have no checksum or file-version checks and can upload just about any file into the BIOS. Suppose you have a picture handy of a well-known nude model, a typical flash operation could look something like this:

Having rebooted, your system should have stopped working normally and the screen should be blank. If this is the case you've successfully 'configured' your BIOS.

However, there's more fun to be had. Suppose you want to replace the BIOS after the above mentioned 'configuration', then we'll have to physically remove the BIOS chip and replace it with a new one. Removing it, however, can be just as productive as 'configuring' it. Most BIOS chips are socketed, meaning that the chip resides in a socket, much like your CPU, but without a lever. Thus, in order to get it out of the socket we have to use something else as a 'lever'. A prime candidate is a screwdriver; by carefully prying on alternate sides, the BIOS chip can be successfully removed, but as before, that's not the objective here. Prying it on one side until it pops right out of its socket is the best way to end up with severely bent or broken pins. If enough force is applied and the socket is of high enough quality, the BIOS chip can be effectively snapped in two, or can be ripped right off the motherboard with the socket still attached, resulting in unrecoverable motherboard damage.

K-Bench schrijft dat Elsa met een PCI versie van haar Erazor X GeForce kaart op de markt zal komen. De videokaart zal vanaf april verkrijgbaar zijn en is voorzien van 32MB SDRAM en een DVI connector:

Elsa will release PCI Version of Erazor X. This card will compete with Voodoo3 PCI in PCI graphic card market and also aims at the users who want to setup dual display systems. EBN Online meldt dat de Taiwanese chipbakker Nanya heeft aangekondigd in het derde kwartaal van dit jaar te zullen beginnen met het samplen van 256 Mbit DDR SDRAMs. 128 Mbit DDR samples volgen in het vierde kwartaal. De doelstelling van Nanya is om eind dit jaar tot de top 10 van de wereldwijde DRAM suppliers te behoren:

Ken Hurley, president of Nanya North America, San Jose, said DDR and single-data-rate versions of the higher-density SDRAMs will be produced on the company's 0.175-micron process technology being installed in its fab at Linhoa, Taiwan.

[...] Nanya this quarter has started shipping 64-Mbit SDRAMs produced on its 0.2-micron process at its re-equipped fab in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The plant is capable of producing 30,000 8-in. wafers a month. The fab in Linhoa, when it comes on line late this year, will ramp up to 17,000 wafers monthly in December and 25,000 wafers monthly in March 2001. Ultimately, the Linhoa fab will have capacity for 30,000 monthly wafer starts.

Thresh's Firingsquad heeft een vergelijking van de Asus K7M en MSI K7 Pro online gemikt. Zoals je wellicht zult weten gaat 't in beide gevallen om een Athlon plank met de AMD Irongate chipset. De K7 Pro werd door Firingsquad vanwege de betere layout en features en de lagere prijs als beste van de twee bevonden. De K7M presteert beter op het gebied van overclocking, voor zover dat (middels busspeed verhoging) mogelijk is met een Athlon:

One downside of the K7 Pro voltage adjustment feature is the range of voltages; the K7 Pro only allows voltages of 1.5V-1.85V. The K7M supports voltages from 1.3V to 2.0V.

During overclocking testing, neither motherboard was able to run successfully at 110MHz system bus with the Athlon 850 processor. The K7M slightly edged out the K7 Pro in overclocking testing with the 850, running stable at 104, while the K7 Pro at that bus speed was a little flaky in Quake 3. (even after voltage adjustments) This, coupled with more voltages, puts the K7M just ahead of the K7 Pro.

Van Smith van Tom's Hardware Guide, eerder verantwoordelijk voor een behoorlijk positief getint artikel over de toekomst van AMD, heeft een verhaaltje over de Intel gezinsplanning van dit jaar getikt. Naast info over nieuwe processors (Coppermine, Coppermine-128, Willy, Itanium, Foster etc.) krijgen we een overzicht van Intel's plannen op het gebied van chipsets. Wat dit laatste betreft lijkt Intel alleen nog voor de Tehama (Willamette) chipset voor een Rambus-only oplossing te kiezen:

Although Intel loudly trumpeted at the IDF that the Willamette will only use RDRAM (and the roadmap seems to indicate that the Tehama chipset is designed to support only RDRAM), Intel backpedaled on many of its previous commitments to Rambus RDRAM. In addition to the "2+2" i820 supporting SDRAM, most of Intel's processors for the next year are expressly designed to work with SDRAM and in some cases DDR SDRAM (RDRAM's arch enemy). From the Timna to all mobile PIII's (Intel has dropped plans to launch the RDRAM based "Greendale" mobile chipset) to all server and workstation chips (aside from the PIII's that now have the option to run SDRAM), Intel states no intention of using RDRAM with these chips for this year. Even Willamette's brother, Foster, is set to use SDRAM or DDR RAM.

This is a major pullback from Intel's previous commitments to RDRAM, and is a significant comment on how the Rambus technology is floundering.

AMD heeft gisteren zoals verwacht de prijzen van haar Athlon en K6-2 processors verlaagd. De dalingen zijn echter minder heftig dan eerder door The Register voorspelt. De Athlon 700 wordt bijvoorbeeld geen $270 maar $389, scheelt toch wel een behoorlijk eind. Volgens News.com zijn de Athlon CPU's, met uitzondering van de 850MHz versie, nog steeds prima leverbaar:

One advantage that AMD holds for the moment is that supplies of its chips appear to be relatively healthy, according to sources, especially in comparison to Pentium IIIs. Chip dealers report that nearly every speed grade, except for the 850-MHz Athlon, remains easy to find. The fastest Pentium IIIs can be a tougher find, although Intel has stated that supplies are increasing.

An indication of the state of supply comes in the retail price of Athlons. Several dealers are selling Athlon chips at retail for less than the stated wholesale price.

K6-2 processors, meanwhile, dropped in price by 10 to 39 percent. Among the price cuts, the 533-MHz K6-2 dropped from $167 to $127, while the 500-MHz fell from $153 to $93.

De aandelenkoers van Rambus Inc. is gisteren ontploft nadat Rambus het nieuws bekend maakte dat Hyundai en Infineon met de massaproduktie van RDRAMs beginnen. If anything, optimism may come from the fact that some of the worst events may be behind the company. IDC estimates that Rambus will account for 11 percent of memory shipped this year while DDR DRAM will constitute 10 percent.

By contrast, Jim Handy at Dataquest said that the volumes of Rambus would account for 16 percent of the total memory shipped in 2000.

Other analysts attributed the surge in part to speculative trading in the shares. Over the long term, Rambus's fortunes don't look great.

"No one is working on Rambus (PC) designs," Bert McComas, principal analyst at InQuest Market Research, who has been critical of the company.

Nathan Brookwood, principal at Insight 64, reiterated the view somewhat. Since the Intel Developer Forum earlier this month, Rambus has had an apparent growth path, but not a wide one.

Although Intel's Willamette chip will be paired with Rambus memory in performance PCs in 2001, this will constitute only a fraction of the total computer market, Brookwood said.
