WildAndC heeft haar handen weten te leggen op de laatste Intel roadmap met betrekking tot de desktop machines. Aan het einde van dit jaar kunnen we de snelste Pentium 4 met de 0,18 micron core verwachten, deze zal geklokt zijn op 2GHz. Tevens introduceert Intel dan de eerste Northwood's met snelheden van 2 en 2,2GHz. Rond deze tijd zal het merendeel van de mainstream desktops uitgerust zijn met een Pentium 4 CPU. Voor het tweede kwartaal van 2002 heeft Intel een Northwood op 2,4GHz in de planning staan, vanaf dat punt is bijna in het gehele mainstream segment geen Pentium III meer te bekennen.

De al eerder besproken Linux Development Kit voor de Playstation 2 is in Japan aangekomen. Van de set zijn 2000 stuks gemaakt die al voor zijn introductie gepre-ordered waren. Een van de gelukkige eigenaren is Impress PC Watch, die er volgens traditie heel wat plaatjes van heeft geschoten.

The set includes a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, the HDD hard drive unit, a PC card network adapter (to be used with the original model PS2's PCMCIA slot), a VGA adapter to connect the whole works to a computer monitor, a power supply, and a DVD-ROM with development libraries. The PC card has two slots for both Ethernet and ATA connections (the latter being where you connect the hard drive). The hard drive appears to be of the same design as the external type that will eventually be released in Japan for users with the original PS2 hardware design, and includes a device identity switch that may come into play when future add-ons are daisy-chained with it.

The VGA adapter is a surprisingly understated affair, with none of the bulk of something like the Dreamcast VGA box or a third-party upscan converter. It's simply a short PS2 video cable that terminates in two RCA audio plugs and a 15-pin male VGA connector.

Dacht je net dat je wel zo'n beetje alle kleurtjes gezien had, komt Abit ineens met de ST6E-RAID 'Casper' aanzetten. Dit is een limited edition van het normale bord met een hagelwitte printplaat. Het moederbord is dus ontworpen rond de i815EP B-step chipset en biedt dus plaats aan zo'n beetje alle Socket370 processors tot en met Tualatin. De layout en features van het ding zijn erg netjes; er zijn drie SDRAM slots aanwezig, AGP, zes PCI sleuven, CNR en een IDE RAID controller afkomstig van HighPoint. Andere leuke extra's zijn onboard AC'97 geluid en een BIOS voorzien van SoftMenu III. GigaByte heeft vandaag een press release de deur uit gedaan waarin ze vijf nieuwe Socket A moederborden met ondersteuning voor een 266MHz FSB aankondigen. Het bedrijf zegt dat er betere filters en stroomvoorzieningen zijn ontworpen om stabiliteit te kunnen garanderen met een systeembus van 266MHz. De huidige collectie van het bedrijf bestaat uit de welbekende 7DXR, 7VTX en 7ZXR, respectievelijk voorzien van AMD 760, VIA KT266 en VIA KT133A chipsets en vooral gericht op overklokkers. De onderstaande nieuwe borden zullen zeer binnenkort ook lid worden van de familie:

FiringSquad heeft een wat late review van de Nomad Jukebox online gemept. Zoals je je waarschijnlijk nog wel kunt herinneren gaat het hier om een draagbare MP3-speler van Creative met een ingebouwde harddisk van 6GB. Overigens is het momenteel mogelijk om via onofficiële weg het apparaat up te graden naar een 20 of 30GB versie. Dit werd dus ook even getest door het vuurpeleton :

Although six gigabytes provides adequate space for a modest collection, it's still quite easy to fill up that space if you use 320kbps MP3s or just store full resolution WAV files. A small company has recognized this limitation, and come up with a 20GB and 30GB aftermarket upgrade. Nomadjukebox.net, which has no affiliation with Creative Labs, offers a 20 or 30GB hard drive upgrade. The drives, manufactured by Fujitsu, come preformatted for the Nomad Jukebox and so you need only swap the drives. If you ship your unit to them, they will even provide a free install. Bij The Tech Zone heeft men een preview gefabriceerd van de SiS 635 en 735 DDR chipsets. Van beide chipsets had men een pre-productie engineering sample bij de hand waar voorzichtig een paar tests mee gedraaid konden worden. Harde benchmarks werden helaas niet gepubliceerd.

Eerstgenoemde, de SiS 635 DDR chipset voor Pentium III (Tualatin) en Celeron processors, is weinig spectaculair vanwege de matige performancewinst die een DDR-platform voor de betreffende Intel processoren kan betekenen. Desondanks schijnt de performance niet onder te doen voor duurdere alternatieven als VIA's Pro 266. Gezien zijn lage prijs zit er dus zeker wel een succesje voor de SiS 635 in.

Leuker is de SiS 735, die Socket A cpu's van DDR-power voorziet. Veel verschil met de 635 Intel-based chipset is er niet, maar Athlon processors laten wel een significant groter winstpercentage zien met dit SiS-ontwerp. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de verbinding van de geïntegreerde north- en southbridge, die dankzij 8 pipelines een maximale bandbreedte van 1,2GB/sec creëert. In ieder geval is het duidelijk dat de 735 nu al indrukwekkend is, zowel op het gebied van prijs als prestatie:

SiS seems to have produced two very competetive chipsets here, especially in the 735DDR. Indications are from perusing reviews/articles on our fellow hardware websites, that SiS's solution may be superior, not only in cost and North/Southbridge design, but in overall performance as well. Chaintech, Leadtek, and Gigabyte are all 3 very close to releasing SocketA 735 chipset products, and a similar situation exists with the 635DDR, with many companies, including Asus, planning on 635DDR products.

SiS probably does have a little bit of an uphill battle however. SiS, in my experience, has never been associated with high performance. With the 635DDR, and especially the SiS 735DDR SocketA solution, SiS is poised to turn many heads this year, with what seems to be a design superior to the competition. It will be interesting to see solutions develop. With the strong performance of the SiS735, it may just be my next personal SocketA platform.

oehoe zag op AnandTech een goede review van de MSI StarForce 822, één van de vele GeForce3 kaarten die te krijgen zijn. Het ontwerp van het beestje lijkt veel op het nVidia reference design. Opvallend is echter dat MSI geen heatsinks heeft geplaatst op de geheugenchips en dat er net als bij GainWard een dochterkaartje opgeplakt kan worden voor ViVo functies. Het gebrek aan RAM-sinks lijkt op het eerste gezicht geen effect te hebben op de overklokbaarheid van de kaart. De maximale snelheid is 515MHz en dat is hetzelfde als gehaald wordt met kaarten van andere merken. De poging van MSI om een no-nonsense kaart te maken die gewoon werkt maar vooral ook lekker goedkoop is, is volgens de conclusie mislukt. Andere merken bieden meer extra's voor prijs die relatief gezien maar iets hoger ligt. Gelukkig slaat het bedrijf deze conclusie niet in de wind:

Things we would have liked to see on the StarForce 822 include an S-video input port (as well as the already existing ports), memory heatsinks, and a lower price. Perhaps as GeForce3 chip availability expands and prices continue to drop, the MSI StarForce 822 will be able to underprice the competition. Until then, it seems that there are better solutions on the market.

Note: MSI got in touch with us last night and said that they were working on an "updated" version of the StarForce 822 that will include RAMsinks, TV-out, and come bundled with the game DRONEZ. We look forward to reviewing this version of the card when it becomes available.

The Inquirer heeft mogelijk een verklaring gevonden voor de regelmatig terugkerende geruchten over Dell computers met AMD processors. Bronnen dicht bij het bedrijf melden dat Dell wel degelijk notebooks gaat produceren met mobiele Athlon of Duron chips aan boord, maar dat deze niet via de gebruikelijke kanalen te koop zullen zijn. Eén van de meest belangrijke klanten van het bedrijf zou expliciet gevraagd hebben om een lading notebooks voorzien van een AMD processor en Dell zou, om deze klant tevreden te houden, toegezegd hebben te kunnen leveren. Het speciaal ontworpen model bestaat officiëel niet om publiciteit te vermijden en te voorkomen dat de band met Intel schade oploopt. Volgens het bericht is niet ongebruikelijk dat voor een grote order een custom ontwerp wordt gemaakt, maar toch is het aan te raden om het verhaal met een korreltje zout te nemen:

Dell, however, will not "release the model for sale to Joe Public, avoiding publicity and engaging the wrath of Intel, so as not to lose the discounts and favourable shipping that it gets."

This sort of thing does happen, by the way, but computer firms hate the details getting out because it makes them look as if they are not operating according to strategy but simply tactically. As if they would.

* Taiwanese firm Quanta, which also makes notebooks for HP and Compaq, has secured a deal to build five million 14-inch notebooks for the Dell Corporation, starting January next year and extending over a period of 18 months.

In een artikel op de site van de Telegraaf is te lezen dat kabelboer Casema van plan is 300 van de 1200 werknemers te ontslaan. Het gaat voor het grootste gedeelte om mensen met een tijdelijk contract, maar er zullen ook 15 "vaste" mensen moeten vertrekken. Het is wel de bedoeling dat er weer 100 nieuwe banen bijkomen zodat het netto-verlies aan banen op 200 uitkomt.

Volgens een woordvoerder is deze ontslagenronde onderdeel van de grote reorganisatie die het bedrijf aan het doorvoeren is. Het is de bedoeling dat het bedrijf in 2003 weer winst gaat maken:

De reorganisatie is volgens de kabelexploitant noodzakelijk om de gevolgen van de achterblijvende marktontwikkelingen op te vangen. De internetactiviteiten draaien goed, maar vooral de ontwikkeling en exploitatie van allerlei interactieve televisiediensten gaan trager dan vooraf ingeschat.

Casema is vorig jaar in de rode cijfers gedoken. Het nettoverlies kwam uit op ƒ34 miljoen. Voor dit jaar wordt rekening gehouden met een hoger verlies. De maatregelen moeten ertoe leiden dat Casema vanaf 2003 weer winstgevend wordt.

Naast deze ontslagen zal het bedrijf ook niet-kernactiviteiten, zoals het onderhoud aan het netwerk en marketing worden uitbesteed aan andere bedrijven, wat over twee jaar 200 miljoen gulden besparing moet opleveren. Ook voor France Telecom, het moederbedrijf van Casema, zullen deze bezuinigingen wel welkom zijn. Dat bedrijf heeft inmiddels een schuldenlast van 134 miljard gulden.

Volgens twee Amerikaanse openbaar aanklagers gaat Microsoft nog steeds op dezelfde voet verder, wat betreft het misbruiken van haar monopolie-posities. Deze heren leiden ook al de huidige zaak tegen de softwaregigant, maar zeggen geen tweede rechtzaak te willen beginnen. Toch zijn ze wel erg 'bezorgd' omtrent Microsoft's handelingen. Zo wordt gevonden dat bijvoorbeeld de Smart Tags en een ingebouwd Instant Messaging systeem Microsoft een te grote invloed geven op het internetgebruik van de consument, aldus CNET:

Attorneys General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Tom Miller of Iowa issued a terse news release Wednesday afternoon saying they have "serious concerns" about Microsoft's "very troubling" strategy for its Windows XP operating system, which will debut in the fall. However, Blumenthal and Miller dismissed reports that they are preparing to file a second antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft.

Microsoft's decision to bundle Internet Explorer into the operating system was the foundation for the antitrust case now under appeal. The attorneys general for 19 states and the Justice Department sued the company in 1998, alleging it used its monopoly in the operating system market to capture the Net browser market.

De vraag is echter of de uitspraak echt nuttig zal zijn. Wie weet zal de rechter er rekening mee houden, maar de anti-trustzaak lijkt een eindeloos verhaal te worden. De toekomst zal het - zoals altijd - uit moeten wijzen.

StorageReview heeft een review online gezet over de Ultrastar 36Z15 hardeschijf van IBM. De hardeschijf bestaat uit een zestal platters van 6,1GB die ronddraaien met een snelheid van 15.000rpm. Hierdoor heeft hij een capaciteit van 36,7GB en een seektime van slechts 4,2ms. De schijf is uitgerust met een SCSI interface.

In de benchmarks doet de schijf het niet onaardig. In WinBench 99 verslaat hij de Cheetah X15 met ongeveer een 20 procent voorsprong. In IOMeter doet de schijf het wat minder en weet de Cheetah X15 de schijf nipt te verslaan in de file server en database index benchmarks. Al met al een leuke schijf, maar wel met een paar kleine minpuntjes:

One can hardly expect the best when it comes to heat and noise from a 15k RPM product. Though our review sample thankfully doesn't feature any high-pitch idle noises, seeks grind away louder than all but the earliest 10k RPM drives. The 36Z15 is the hottest drive we've ever tested. Grinding away for about 2 hours in IOMeter, the drive was easily too hot to touch… this even with our PC Power & Cooling Baycool. Active cooling and/or a case with top rate circulation is an absolute necessity with this drive.

In conclusion, the Ultrastar 36Z15 easily delivers the best workstation performance we've measured to date. It shatters WinBench 99 WinMark records as well as perfoming solidly in our IOMeter Workstation Index. When it comes to servers and databases, however, the 36Z15 doesn't wallop the first-generation Cheetah X15 as well as many would hope. In the plus column, the drive offers double the capacity of the original X15, and certainly destroys all 10k competition. Just remember, however, that a contender from Fujitsu as well as Seagate's own second-generation unit remain right around the corner.
