Toen Eric Ross, een onderzoeker van het Amerikaanse Thomas Weisel Partners, gisteren voorspelde dat computergigant Dell binnenkort AMD processors zou gaan gebruiken schoten de aandelen van de processorbakker in razend tempo 10% omhoog. Volgens Ross zou in juni op Computex Taipei bekend gemaakt worden dat Dell een 1GHz notebook gebaseerd op de mobile Athlon 4 processor gaat verkopen. Dit zou voor het eerst in meer dan twintig jaar zijn dat Dell een niet-Intel processor zou gebruiken, een moment waar veel mensen op zitten te wachten, gezien de regelmatig voorkomende geruchten. Beide bedrijven wilden niets kwijt over de recent geuite claims en Ross heeft zijn uitspaken inmiddels al een heel stuk afgezwakt:
We asked the analyst in question, Eric Ross, VP of research at San Francisco-based Thomas Weisel Partners, where he got the information, and he admitted that he thought the deal 'unlikely'.
"I am hearing from some of my best sources in the PC supply chain that this will be announced at Computex. I thought it was unlikely, too, and, barring my own hubris, I could be incorrect. However, these sources have been very reliable and I checked several times - I, too, am aware of this call's potential ramifications. Frankly, I have received several calls asking how confident I am concerning this call."
