Asus is van plan om morgen, als AMD de 760 chipset en bijbehorende processors lanceert, de A7M266 aan te kondigen, het eerste DDR moederbord van Asus. Rojak Pot heeft echter vandaag al de press release online gezet. De A7M266 is een Socket A moederbord met AMD 761 North Bridge en VIA 686B South Bridge. Het plankje is uitgerust met een AGP Pro slot, evenals ATA-100 support, onboard geluid en een geïntegreerde 3Com 10/100Mbps ethernet kaart. De overclockers zullen blij zijn om te horen dat de FSB tot 360MHz kan worden ingesteld, hoewel dat waarschijnlijk geen realistisch haalbare waarde is:

Bij hardOCP heeft een lezer een handige tip ingezonden hoe je je ATA66 kabel kunt verbouwen zodat je RAID hebt (bij moederborden met een Promise ATA66 chip). Deze tip komt in navolging op het verhaal bij Tweakhardware waar wordt verteld hoe je je mobo om kunt solderen zodat je RAID support hebt:

Suddenly I had a premonition!! Yes this could be done...I can just solder the resistor into the ATA66 cable. So, out came the ever dependable Fluke 77N Multimeter so I could Ohm out the cable and figure out which wires on the cable were connected to pins 2 and 36 (pin 2 for ground and pin 36 for the mod). Well as you can see by these photos (Taken with a really crappy web camera) you can see the second wire from the red side of the cable is connected to pin 2 and the 10th wire from the other side of the cable is connected to pin 36. Strip back a little of the insulation being VERY CAREFUL not to cut the wire in half and solder the resistor between them. Then cover the exposed wire with electrical tape and you're GTG! (Good Ta Go) I have this installed in my system right now and it works perfectly!

Best of all, if I ever decide that I would like to "re-flash" my Bios back to the old ATA66 "Non-Raid" setup all I have to do is use a different cable. Or if your really cheap you could just unsolder the resistor.

Digital Photography Review heeft hun Canon EOS D30 review uitgebreid met een pagina over het kwaliteitsverschil tussen het JPEG en RAW image format dat de EOS D30 en aantal andere digitale camera's kunnen uitpoepen. Het RAW formaat geeft de opname weer in de rauwe gegevens die door de CCD van de camera worden geregistreert. Bij de meeste CCD's komt deze onbewerkte data in 8, 10 of 12-bits per pixel uit de camera, waardoor de bestandsgrootte kleiner is dan een non-lossy TIFF file. Omdat de pixels nog niet zijn geïnterpoleerd door de camera bestaan de pixels in rauw formaat altijd uit één kleur uit het rijtje RGB of CMYK.

Uit de bevindingen van DP Review blijkt dat de RAW afbeeldingen in de ISO 800 en 1600 modi minder ruis bevatten. JPEGs vertonen vooral in het groene kanaal zichtbaar meer ruis. RAW biedt dus voordelen, al zul je hiervoor wel veel opslagcapaciteit moeten inleveren:

Our findings are that up to ISO 400 there's little difference between RAW and JPEG images, obviously if you have the storage (and time to convert the images later) then RAW provides more flexibility, but it also limits the number of frames you can shoot on a single card and the burst abilities of the camera. At ISO 800 and 1600 it appears that the noise introduced into the image generates increased noise when shot in JPEG rather than RAW, this is probably because of the way the JPEG algorithm works, thus in nearly every test there was always less green channel noise in RAW images.

De mannen van nV News hebben het eerste deel van hun review over de Creative Annihilator 2 Ultra online gezet. De Creative Annihilator 2 Ultra is de standaard GeForce2 Ultra, en heeft als enige afwijking van het reference design een grotere, maar langzamere fan. Aangezien er in het eerste deel van de review nog geen benchmarks te bekennen zijn wordt er nog geen uitspraak gedaan over de snelheid, maar de voorlopige conclusie is erg positief dankzij de relatief lage prijs van deze GeForce2 Ultra en de goede Detonator verbouwingen van Creative:

I can not help but recommend this card. We are already seeing online stores pricing the Annihilator2 Ultra on par with 64MB GeForce2 GTS at their time of its release, around $450. The drivers are solid, Blaster Control is easy to use and navigate. Solid mind-blowing performance.

If you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket, make sure you have the back office support before you buy an Ultra. Go motherboard and CPU first if you are below a 700MHz system. However, those wanting the best in gaming performance will definitely want to pick up the Ultra, and the Creative Annihilator2 Ultra deserves to be at the top of that list.[break]Als extra bonus zit er midden in deze review ook nog een interview geplakt met Steve Mosher van Creative over de Annihilator 2 Ultra. Steve: We had no issue getting -4 memories early in the program. 100% of the memory we used was -4 and marked as -4. We never talk about volume, sorry.

nV News: I know there has been a lot of buzz around 32MB ULtra rumor. Would you care to explain in better detail than I ever could, why the 32MB card is not a possibility? Was it even considered?

Steve: We considered it for about 1 second. The main reason you cannot do it is memory availability. You can make a 32MB card using 1M*32 SGRAM DDR. This memory is available in 166Mhz ( maybe 183 ). You can make a 64MB card using 2M*32 or 4M*16 memory. The 2M*32 was available in 166, the 4M*16 was available in 250Mhz. So a 32MB Ultra would have been a bonehead decision.

I'm not a Geek (ow ja?) heeft een review gepost van de torenhoge ThermalTake Super Orb heatsink/fan. Dat groot nog altijd beter is, bewijzen de benchmarks. De Super Orb draaide 5°C koeler dan de Golden Orb en duwde een Duron naar 950MHz waar de Golden Orb niet voorbij 900MHz kwam:

It does not seem this Orb is on the market yet, I found only listing for it at PCHertz.com, but beware that is not a Super Orb, like they say it is actually just a Chrome Orb. I don't know what this thing will cost, but considering you can get a Golden Orb for as little as $11 you should be able find this one for as low as $20. So is it work spending $9 more to get another 50MHz out of your system? You bet it is, in fact its worth a lot more then $9 more. This heatsink is also designed to handle up to 1.5GHz processors, so it will probably still have some life if you upgrade your Socket A processor.

vanDaal schrijft dat bij Hard2ware.net een review is verschenen over de Cyclone 5000 Ultra midi-tower. Deze kast is in het bezit van 2 92mm fans en 3 80mm fans en volgens de specificaties kan de kast daarmee 229 kubieke voetjes per minuut aan lucht verplaatsen. De kast heeft verder 4 5.25" bays en 5 3.5" bays aan uitbreidings- ruimte en is ook nog in het bezit van een removable motherboard tray. Volgens de reviewer is het een prima kast, en is het enige nadeel de prijs van 150 dollar:

The case had style, lots of slots for expanding your computer, 300 watts for power a must for an overclocker, and it can cool as you have seen in the test I ran at least a 20 degree drop!! The case cost $150 from the Coolerguys, OK some people think that too much for a case, but it really isn't if you think about it. Look the 5 fans that's right there is like $35 US, plus the case it self, plus the 300 watt power supply, the fan grilles, and the laser cut out hole for where the fans go. So as you can see if really adds up now doesn't it and it is not so expensive?

I have seen case on with a power supply of only 200 watts for $75 without fans, but if it were up to me I would 100 times buy the Cyclone 5000 than I would a regular case with 200 watts and no fans. Now you are most likely thinking that case most really sound doesn't it? And the truth is that it isn't as loud as I thought it would be.

Wat niemand zich enkele jaren geleden zou hebben kunnen voorstellen, gaat volgens de Japanse Asahi krant binnenkort toch gebeuren: een joint venture tussen de aartsrivalen Sega en Nintendo. De komst van de Sony Playstation heeft vooral voor Sega de console markt danig verpest. Ondanks de release van de Dreamcast kon Sega niet uit de rode cijfers komen. Vandaag werd voor de eerste helft van dit jaar nog een verlies van 29,2 miljard yen aangekondigd. Wat de joint venture met Nintendo inhoudt is nog niet duidelijk. Wel heeft Sega aangekondigd dat het hun network gaming business wil uitbreiden door een samenwerkingsverband aan te gaan met Nintendo en de Japanse producer Tetsuya Kumuro:

Sega has stated that it's not basing its future exclusively on Dreamcast -- even though it is planning to continue to support the console. As expected, the company is looking to reinforce the network gaming side of its business. In order to achieve this latter goal, Asahi states that Sega will be forming joint companies with, respectively, Nintendo and famed Japanese music producer Tetsuya Komuro.

[...] We're not sure what to make of this peculiar announcement. Unfortunately, the Japanese source gives no further details on what these joint ventures will amount to, and how Komuro plays a role in things. The Tetsuyo Komuro thing is real cool if you're a fan of his work (and really - he's quite the musical genius), but perhaps of more relevance to game fans is being able to see Sega and Nintendo mentioned in the same sentence alongside the words "Jointly owned company."

3DHardware.net heeft een review van de Creative Labs Cambridge SoundWorks PlayWorks PS2000 Digital speakerset (phew!) online gemikt. De satellites van deze set hebben de vormgeving van een podracer en dat ziet er nogal Fisher Price-achtig uit. Niet geheel toevallig richt Creative Labs zich met deze speakertjes vooral op een publiek van (Playstation II) console gamers, die geen genoegen nemen met de matige geluidskwaliteit van hun TV. Wat de speakers verder speciaal maken is de ondersteuning van Virtual Dolby Digital en de uitgebreide aansluitingsmogelijkheden. Vrijwel alles kun je erin prikken, van optische en coaxiale S/PDIF tot tulpstekker. Ook is het leuk dat de signalen van de digitale en analoge inputs middels een mix functie tegelijkertijd weergegeven worden.

Virtual Dolby Digital moet de binnenkomende Dolby Digital of Dolby Pro Logic signalen op een realistische wijze over de twee satellites verspreiden. Volgens de reviewer is Creative hier goed in geslaagd, maar blijft de geluidskwaliteit achter bij andere speakers in de $199 prijsklasse waar deze set toe behoort. 3DHardware.net concludeert dat de PlayWorks PS2000 weliswaar een goede uitbreiding is voor PS2 bezitters, maar dat PC gamers beter op zoek kunnen gaan naar een goede 4-speakerset zoals de Creative FPS2000 en de Videologic Sirocco Crossfire:

If you are a PC owner and do not plan to get a PlayStation2 then the PS2000 Digital are still something for you to consider. They won't be as suitable for music as other models from Creative Labs, or other good speaker brands, but rather they give you a little bit of everything. As a die-hard gamer you would want to opt for something more serious in terms of 4-point surround gaming, such as Videologic's Sirocco Crossfire, or Creative Labs' FPS2000, just to mention a few. If you are movie buff who use the PC to watch DVDs then a surround speaker system such as the Digitheatre DTS or DTT3500 will suit your needs better. But if you do a little of everything, want space-saving and cool looking speakers, don't want to spend a whole lot of money, then the PS2000 Digital might be something for you.

iXBT Labs heeft van 'betrouwbare bronnen' nieuwe details verkregen over Intel's plannen voor het komende jaar. Het belangrijkste nieuwtje is dat er in het derde kwartaal van 2001 een 900MHz Celeron wordt gereleased. Deze Celeron 900 zal gebaseerd zijn op de low-voltage Coppermine-T en heeft evenals de huidige Celerons een gemankeerde L2 cache van 128KB. De verwaarloosde Celeron blijft dus zwaar achterlopen bij de high-end desktop processors.

De 1,13GHz PIII zal pas bij de release van de Coppermine-T core zijn herintroductie maken. Volgens iXBT gebeurt dit in het eerste kwartaal, maar in eerdere berichten werd gegokt op een intro in het tweede kwartaal. In 2002 beleeft de Celeron een die-shrink naar 0,13micron. Het is aannemelijk dat deze Celerons gebaseerd zijn op de Tualatin PIII core, omdat die ook op een 0,13micron procédé vervaardigd wordt.

NeoSeeker heeft een review geschreven rond de Hyperdisk 100 IDE RAID controller van American Megatrends. AMI is een erg bekende fabrikant van SCSI RAID controllers en met deze betaalbare Hyperdisk controller hopen ze RAID ook interessant te maken voor desktop doosjes. De Hyperdisk 100 heeft support voor hot sparing, ATA100 en de RAID levels 0 en 1. RAID 5 is zoals bij alle goedkope IDE RAID controllers niet mogelijk.

Helaas bleken de RAID 0 (striping) prestaties wat tegen te vallen. Terwijl Cmdr. Rosink in zijn IDE RAID / Abit HotRod100 Pro review bijna dubbele transfer rates wist te scoren, kwam de HyperDisk 100 in de HDTach test niet verder dan een verbetering van ongeveer 25%:

Overall the AMI Hyperdisk has a lot to offer. Remember to keep in mind that this is an IDE RAID controller –not SCSI so we shouldn’t expect to see any performance marks even close to SCSI. But we were hoping to see higher marks when using RAID 0 configurations –with slightly lower CPU marks. Even though the CPU is always going to be taxed when using any kind of RAID controller, anywhere over 50% seems rather high.

RAID 1 scores were as expected –and prove this controller can be used in a data redundant RAID 1 without a great lose of performance- but again, those CPU marks were rather high!

The Hyperdisk package has got all you need to have a decent IDE RAID setup. The price for the Hyperdisk 100 is an average $99, which isn’t bad, and it should serve most who are looking for about a 20-30% gain in disk performance over single disk configurations well. In addition the Hyperdisk has full RAID 1 support as well as Disk sparing support.

Steve's Digicams heeft een review gepost van de nieuwe digitale Canon EOS D30 camera. De EOS D30 combineert de features van een normale spiegelreflex met een volledig in eigen huis ontwikkelde 3,25 Megapixel CMOS sensor. De body komt overeen met de SLR's uit de bekende Canon EOS serie. De camera wordt geleverd met een 16MB CompactFlash kaartje en laat zich via de USB of RS-232 poort aan de PC linken. Naast een TWAIN module levert Canon een capture proggie waarmee de camera op een bepaalde interval plaatjes naar je PC kunt laten sturen. Ook kun je hiermee de meest gebruikte settings van de EOS D30 op afstand bedienen.

De grote 15,1*22,7mm CMOS sensor van de EOS D30 blijkt niet slechter te presteren dan de CCD's die we normaal gesproken in dit soort camera's tegen komen. Het gebruik van een CMOS chip heeft als voordeel dat het energie verbruik en de productiekosten veel lager zijn. Bovendien kan de beeldbewerkings electronica op de chip geïntegreerd worden, waardoor opnames sneller verwerkt worden. Helaas is de prijs van al dit moois nog steeds behoorlijk hoog. De eerste EOS D30's worden nu in beperkte aantallen bij dealers aangeboden voor verkoopprijzen van rond de 3000 dollar:

So far the D30 has fully lived up to my expectations and apparently it has met or exceeded the expectations of the other reviewers as well. Even when you use the custom set to create a parameter with High sharpening the images are still on the "soft" side. This is not a bad thing as most people who will be buying this camera will probably be using PhotoShop or another graphic program to finish the images. If the camera over- sharpens the images then there is little you can ever do to recover them later so less is always better. To the untrained I'm sure there will be comments about the sample pictures such as, "they seem awful soft and maybe even flat looking." And when compared to the images that come out of the average consumer 3-megapixel camera I'm sure they will look that way. I find myself applying a rather heavy dose of USM (unsharp mask) to most of my D30 images as well as using autolevel to make them really snappy. The important thing to remember here is that there is plenty of latitude to be able to do this, especially if you're working with the RAW files.

[...] I'm still going to be updating this conclusion text over the next week or so but rest assured that I am very positive about this camera. With the D30 now showing up (in limited quantity) at the dealers I felt the need to get as much of this information out to the buying public as quickly as possible. I really don't like concluding a review of a camera this feature-rich after having only used it for just a week. If it gives you an idea of how much I like the D30, I will probably be buying one for myself shortly. Oh yes, the printed manual that comes with it is excellent, my congratulations to the author(s). Besides informing you on how to work the camera, it gives you examples of when and what you would use a given mode or exposure feature for.

Gebruikers die dit effect niet op prijs stellen kunnen hun accu inleveren. Compaq is sympathiek genoeg om voor elke geretourneerde accu twee exemplaren terug te geven:

Compaq customers affected by this recall and replacement program will be eligible to receive two free battery packs for each recalled battery. There will be no cost to Compaq customers for the recall and replacement program.

The computer industry has recently experienced several battery recalls by other computer manufacturers. Compaq believes that this recall is unrelated to any other in the industry.

Compaq recently identified a defect in one battery pack that was manufactured between June 2 and July 10, 2000. This failed battery pack overheated and released some smoke, damaging the notebook computer. Although there has been only a single failure reported, Compaq and its battery manufacturer consider this defect a potential risk due to the high levels of heat and possibility of fire, and is taking these proactive measures to ensure the safety of Compaq's customers.

The recalled battery pack can be identified by a date code and serial number on the white label to the right of the battery connector. If the Armada E500 or Armada V300 contains a battery pack with one of the following date codes and serial numbers, please contact Compaq immediately for free replacement batteries.

Based on the nature of this issue, Compaq is requesting customers to immediately discontinue use of the recalled batteries by discharging the battery, removing the battery from the notebook, and ordering the two replacement batteries offered through the replacement program. Intel aanvoerder Graig Barrett heeft tegenover ZDNet bevestigd dat Pentium 4 in 'ongeveer een maand' wordt gereleased. Of dit de 20ste of 27ste november wordt, zoals eerder door ZDNet en Digit Life werd gespeculeerd, wilde meneer Barrett niet verklappen. Wel gaf hij aan dat de levering van Pentium 4 processors eerder op gang zal komen dan de oorspronkelijke doelstelling van eind dit jaar:

The chief executive officer of microchip titan Intel Corp. said on Friday the U.S. company's long-awaited Pentium 4 microprocessor would be launched in about one month, just ahead of its original year-end target.

"We'll price the Pentium 4 processor precisely as necessary to get it in the volume desktop marketplace," Intel (Nasdaq: INTC ) CEO Craig Barrett told reporters in Taipei.

"The product will be introduced in about a month, and we are going to ramp it very rapidly next year," he added.

Wat betreft de relatie tussen Intel en Rambus Inc. kon Barrett zeggen dat Intel nog steeds gelooft dat Rambus DRAM de beste oplossing is voor high-performance desktops. Hij ontkende dat Intel volgend jaar een DDR chipset voor de P4 op de markt zal brengen.

Chris Angelini van Sharky Extreme heeft een review van het MSI K7T Pro2 Socket A moederplankje neer gemikt. De K7T Pro2 maakt gebruik van dezelfde layout als de oude K7T, maar heeft in tegenstelling tot z'n oudere broeder wel de beschikking over de nodige overclocking features. Zo is het nu eindelijk mogelijk om de multiplier vanuit het BIOS te tweaken. De busspeed settings zijn beschikbaar in een range van 100 tot 166MHz in stappen van 1MHz. Verder kan Vi/o verhoogd worden van 3,3 naar 3,45V en laat Vcore zich tweaken tussen 1,5 en 1,85V in stappen van 0,025 Volt. Om overklokkers verder te assisteren wordt het plankje geleverd met Fuzy Logic III. Hiermee kunnen oc'ers vanuit Windows de FSB geleidelijk ophogen. Bij een crash wordt de FSB automagisch terug gezet naar de hoogste stabiele kloksnelheid. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat MSI dit bord direct positioneert tegenover de popi KT133 plankjes van Abit en Asus.

Dankzij de uitgebreide overclocking features van de K7T Pro2 kon Sharky Extreme een 1GHz Athlon probleemloos tot 111MHz FSB overklokken. Wat betreft de performance scoort de K7T Pro2 in vrijwel alle tests beneden het niveau van de Abit KT7-RAID en Asus A7V. Met name de geheugenperformance is beduidend lager dan laatstgenoemde mobo's, waardoor ook Quake III een duidelijk lagere framerate laat zien:

iXBT Labs heeft wat info & pics gepost over de Creative 3D Blaster GeForce2 MX, de eerste GF2 MX met DDR SDRAM. De Creative GF2 MX is aan de buitenkant herkenbaar aan de afwijkende PCB, die langer is dan het normale GeForce2 MX reference design. Creative heeft ervoor gekozen om gebruik te maken van relatief trage 7ns/143MHz Huyndai DDR chippies. Omdat de breedte van de geheugenbus is gehalveerd tot 64-bits is de geheugen bandbreedte van deze kaart in theorie lager dan die van normale GF2 MX kaarten met 166MHz SDR SDRAM op een 128-bit geheugenbus. Wat de gevolgen zijn voor de performance blijft wazig. Volgens de uitleg in deze eerdere nieuwsposting is 64-bit DDR bij een gelijke klok in principe sneller dan 128-bit SDR.

Creative is vergeten om support voor Twinview en een TV-Out in te bouwen. De layout geeft aan dat een tweede monitor uitgang wel tot de mogelijkheden behoort. De release date van de Creative GeForce2 MX is volgens iXBT eind november. De prijs ligt rond de 130 dollar.
