Op de CeBit 2001 in Hannover die donderdag van start gaat zal Yamaha haar nieuwe 20X CD-R/RW drives demonstreren. Naast een schrijfsnelheid van 20X, kunnen de CRW2200 drives herschijven op 10X en lezen op 40X. De CRW2200 is uitgerust met SafeBurn, een geavanceerde techniek om buffer-underruns tegen te gaan. Daarnaast is er een 8MB buffer aanwezig en wordt de schrijfsnelheid automatisch aangepast aan de snelheid van het systeem en aan de kwaliteit van de gebruikte CDR's. Yamaha zal op de CeBit vijf modellen van de CRW2200 familie presenteren. De CRW2200E (intern IDE) zal het tweede kwartaal van dit jaar op de markt komen. Later zullen onder andere ook interne en externe SCSI modellen beschikbaar komen.

Bij GameSpy.com is een artikel te vinden over de Indrema L600 console. Deze op Linux gebaseerde console moet het gaan opnemen tegen de Xbox en de PS2. De nieuwe console zal zich vooral op niet-commerciële games richten, zoals Tux Racer en Pingus . Games voor de Indrema worden geheel volgens het Linux-principe ontwikkeld. Indrema heeft een SDK gereleased, zodat developers (tegen een geringe vergoeding) zowel commerciële als gratis spellen kunnen ontwikkelen. Volgens Indrema wordt deze unieke manier van ontwikkeling van games dan ook een grote hit. Bij Linux-spellen zou het vooral weer om de fun moeten gaan, en niet om geld en marketing, aldus GameSpy. De vraag is natuurlijk of Indrema tegen de stevige concurrentie van Sony, Microsoft en Nintendo is opgewassen.

Dan van Dan's Data heeft een review online gezet over de bekende 650 Watt Enermax voeding. Hoewel de meeste reviewers deze voeding als een 650 Watt exemplaar bestempelen is het eigenlijk 'slechts' een 550Watt exemplaar. Dat is namelijk het maximale vermogen wat de voeding kan leveren. Neemt niet weg dat hij 24A op de +12V, 46A op de +5V, 40A op de +3,3V en nog een paar Ampère op de –5V en –12V kan leveren. Hij kan alleen niet op alle voltages tegelijk het maximale vermogen leveren, anders was het inderdaad een 650Watt voeding.

Verder is deze voeding uitgerust met een flinke kabel zooi, twee stille fans met goudkleurige fan grilles en goudkleurige geanodiseerde heatsinks binnenin. De laatste twee dingen zijn niet raar als je bedenkt dat deze voeding ongeveer een efficiëntie heeft van 72%. Dat betekent namelijk dat als hij maximaal wordt belast niet alleen 550Watt in je computer apparatuur stopt, maar zelf ook nog eens 200Watt produceert. Een leuke voeding, maar voor de meeste mensen een beetje overkill:

Some people buy high-rated PSUs "just to be sure", but that's not necessarily a great idea. Cheap Taiwanese high power PSUs aren't any more reliable than other cheap Taiwanese PSUs, and may even be worse. That's why they're often difficult to get from reputable dealers - the dead-on-arrival rate's so bad that nobody wants to stock the things.

The Enermax is not a suspiciously cheap Iridescent Frangipani Power Friend PSU with fanciful numbers on the sticker. If you need something that really can deliver 24 amps at 12 volts all the live-long day, this'll do it.

In een persbericht dat bij GA-Hardware te lezen is maakt ALi bekend dat ze een nieuwe DDR chipset voor Pentium III processors gaan produceren. De Aladdin Pro 5T ondersteunt een 133MHz FSB, AGP4x en zes PCI slots. Naast DDR is het ook mogelijk om normaal SDRAM te gebruiken. Het opvallende aan de chipset is dat deze dankzij het lage stroomgebruik ook in notebooks gebruikt kan worden. ALi heeft daarmee de eerste mobiele Pentium III DDR chipset. De chipset biedt ook plaats aan mobiele Pentium II processors en toekomstige mobiele CPU's, waarmee men waarschijnlijk de Tualatin bedoelt. Samples van de chipset moeten volgende maand beschikbaar zijn en massaproductie start een paar maanden later:

ITworld meldt in dit bericht dat Hewlett-Packard vandaag al twee nieuwe notebooks op de markt brengt die zijn voorzien van Intel's Mobile Pentium III 1GHz processor, die officiëel ook pas vanaf vandaag te verkrijgen is.

De drie nieuwe Intel Mobile processoren die respectievelijk op 1GHz, 900MHz (Mobile PIII) en 750MHz (Mobile Celeron) draaien, worden door HP ook al aangeboden in haar Omnibook 6000 serie:

The HP Pavilion N6395 will feature the 1GHz processor, a 30 G-byte hard drive and a 15-inch display, and will be available in retail shops from Monday. The notebook, aimed primarily at consumers, will retail for $3,199, the source said.

For business users, the HP Omnibook 6000 will be available in models featuring all three of the new processors. The systems also feature 128M bytes of RAM, expandable to 512M bytes, and a hard drive of up to 30G-bytes, with the possibility of adding a 20G-byte second hard drive. The Omnibook with the 1GHz processor will be priced at $4,199.

Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een artikel on-line gezet over de prestaties en schaalbaarheid van Intel's Pentium III processor, dit als vervolg op het eerdere artikel over AMD's Athlon processoren. Tom geeft een overzicht van de ontwikkeling van de Pentium III en gaat in op de upgrade-mogelijkheden die je hebt bij de diverse chipsets die voor de Pentium III op de markt zijn. Daarnaast gaat men ook in op de effecten van een upgrade van de videokaart op de totale prestaties van het systeem - en die is niet gering. Het hele verhaal wordt onderbouwd met een aantal benchmarks, en uiteindelijk komt men tot de volgende conclusies:

The Pentium III is not dead! I am not sure how long Intel will keep this processor alive, but right now it looks like we will still have the pleasure for many months. If we forget former problems (i.e. the fiasco with the 1.13 GHz version and persistent delivery delays of Pentium III models last year) we should be aware of the fact that the P3 Coppermine is still an excellent chip. Like most other Intel CPUs, it is highly overclockable (only by raising the FSB speed) and capable of running in multi-processor environments. For which tasks do you normally use your computer? After studying the benchmark results (also see the Athlon scaling article) we should be happy that the product cycle for microprocessors is basically slowing down. There are only few applications available for home use which would require a processor at > 1 GHz.

Gamers - do not overrate the benefits of a GHz processor! Every model at 500-700 MHz will perform well for some time, and those between 700 and 1000 MHz should last you for at least 12 months. What about your hard drive? If you are using a model that is two years old or older, you might consider getting a new one, not only for larger capacity, but also for better performance.

Dat de Pentium 4 ontworpen is voor hoge kloksnelheden wisten we. Dat er in de meeste gevallen een paar honderd MHz extra uit te halen is wisten we ook. Maar dat de core bijna 1GHz overgeklokt kan worden is op z'n minst nieuws te noemen. Dat is precies wat deze Japanner heeft gedaan, Holicho is zijn naam en het is een man van weinig woorden, bovendien zijn de woorden die hij gebruikt bijna allemaal onleesbaar. Toch kunnen we wat informatie uit z'n homepage halen, zo zien we dat zijn zelf in elkaar geknutselde koeling voor een temperatuur van -65 graden zorgt en dat bij op die manier een sample van een 1,7GHz Pentium 4 (zonder multiplier lock) onder handen heeft genomen. Met 1,85 Volt, 650MHz FSB en een multiplier van 16 lukte het hem de core op 2,6GHz te krijgen, maar liefst 900MHz boven de spec. Wat er met het systeem gebeurt als zijn koelgoedje is verdampt staat er niet bij, maar het kan nooit veel goeds zijn :

Palm heeft vandaag twee nieuwe high-end handhelds in de verkoop gedaan: de m500 en m505. Beide modellen zijn weer een stapje lichter geworden, zijn uitgerust met een uitbreidingsslot voor SD-kaarten en beschikken over versie 4.0 van PalmOS. Het is ook mogelijk om met deze Palmpjes het internet op te gaan, iets wat vooral met het 65.000 kleurenscherm van de m505 prettig zal gaan. Houd er wel rekening mee dat pornografisch materiaal niet weergegeven wordt . Hieronder wat meer info afkomstig van WebWereld:

Eerst het gewicht. De m500 weegt 99 gram. Daarmee is de m500 15 procent lichter dan de Palm Vx. De m505 is wat zwaarder, 128 gram. Hij is dan ook wat dikker (2,7 millimeter) dan de m500 die 1 centimeter dik is.

Beide modellen hebben een uitbreidingsslot, waar zogeheten SD-kaarten ingestoken kunnen worden. Zo kan er extra geheugen of nieuwe software aan de Palm worden toegevoegd.

Ook nieuw is het alarm. Dat zat altijd al op de Palm, maar was vrij irritant. Vergelijkbaar met een mobiele telefoon: een hoop gepiep. Gebruikers kunnen hun Palm daarom nu ook op de trilstand zetten. Ook kunnen ze voor verschillende knipperlichtjes als alarm kiezen. Handig voor tijdens vergaderingen.

Daarnaast is het met de m500 en m505 mogelijk om je mobiele telefoon aan te sturen vanuit je adresboek. Je zoekt iemands telefoonnummer op en met een klik geef je je mobiele telefoon de opdracht op dat nummer te bellen.

PC Pop heeft op deze page twee nudies geplaatst van een GeForce2 MX400 kaartje. Deze uitbreiding in de MX serie zou de plaats van de GTS moeten overnemen. Tussen het Japanse gebrabbel kun je de termen 32MB 5ns SDRAM (op een 128 bit brede bus) terugvinden. Het geheugen zal waarschijnlijk op 185MHz geklokt worden, de core tuft dan op 200MHz. Over de retailprijzen is nog weinig info, maar het lijkt erop dat hij lokaal 6000 Yen moet kosten (=120 gulden). Omgerekend zal dat bedrag waarschijnlijk op z'n minst verdubbeld moeten worden .

AnandTech komt met een review van het Videologic Digitheatre DTS luidsprekersysteem. Dit systeem ondersteunt Digital Theatre Systems' DTS-compressieformaat, een zes-kanaals surround-formaat dat minder gecomprimeerd is dan bijvoorbeeld Dolby Digital, en daardoor een beter geluid zou moeten leveren. Daarnaast is de Digitheatre DTS compatible met de bestaande Dolby ProLogic en Dolby Digital formaten.

De set bestaat uit een 70W subwoofer, 30W center-speaker annex controle-unit en vier 30W satelliet-speakers - en natuurlijk zit er ook een afstandbediening bij. De review gaat overigens uitgebreid in op de plaatsing van een dergelijk systeem en da's natuurlijk ook interessant voor iedereen die al een 4.1 of 5.1 set heeft. De reviewers zijn erg onder de indruk van de kwaliteiten van het systeem: het geluid is vrijwel perfect, het is mooi opgebouwd en heeft eigenlijk maar één echt nadeel en dat is als zo vaak de prijs:

In conclusion, the system is a joy to listen to - a very clean sound that is incredibly accurate. The downside to the system is its price; were it a little less expensive, say $100 less, it would be an extremely attractive system. For DVD and music enthusiasts that want a near field listening environment of the highest quality at their computer, the system is a natural choice. Others must weigh the cost of the unit versus the benefits of the system; however, those that do choose this system will never be disappointed in its quality.

UnaClocker van Procooling heeft vandaag een artikel online gezet over zijn "Little Stealth 2" waterkoeling project. Zijn doel? Het maken van een goed presterende waterkoeling voor zijn Thunderbird terwijl dat er aan de buitenkant kast niet aan te zien is. Iets wat hem goed gelukt is gezien de onderstaande quote:

I even took the computer into a computer store I worked at a couple years ago, my old boss goes "Nice wheels". hehe, Shoulda seen his jaw hit the floor when I opened up the case. It's like one of those commercials.. "Waterblock - $60, Radiator - $60, Pump - $35, look on the general public's face when they see water inside a computer that's turned on - PRICELESS!" hehehe..

De componenten die hij heeft gebruikt zijn een Big Momma radiator, een Magdrive pomp en last but not least een gedeeltelijk zilveren waterblok. Allemaal samen goed voor een prijskaartje van zo’n 200 dollar. Het resultaat van deze flinke investering is dat zijn Thunderbird 750 @ 966MHz met 1,9V nu ongeveer 33 C warm wordt. Niet slechts als je bedenkt dat dit in een midi tower zit met erg weinig fans:

Bij Virtual Hideout is een review neergezet over de SuperMicro SC750-A full tower. Deze kast heeft één externe 3,5" bay, twee interne 3,5" bays, zes externe 5,25" bays en één interne 5,25" bay. Naast deze ruimte voor je apparatuur is er ook aan de koeling gedacht: standaard wordt er een 92mm koeler meegeleverd en daarnaast is er nog ruimte voor zeven 80mm koelers . De reviewer is verder van mening dat het een erg solide kast is met een redelijke prijs. Een paar kleine minpuntjes zijn er echter wel zoals niet praktisch geplaatste plekken voor koelers en wat weinig 3,5" bays:

Overall, the Supermicro SC750-A is a great fulltower case to start with, or to transfer your existing system into. It has a few minor flaws that can, for the most part, be fixed with minor modifying. It is also quite large and heavy, but this is typical of all fulltowers, so I cannot hold that against the case. Drive rails and front access are things which are subjective, and cannot be used in an objective evaluation. I've seen this case for around $135USD on the Net W/O shipping and handling. Expect your mileage to vary. This is a more than some other comparable fulltowers, but I consider the SC750-A to be of better quality and therefore worth more.

The latest Addtronics 7896A's are similar to the SC750-A and have many of the features that I desired to be in the SC750-A. Be on the lookout for that case, but note it will probably cost more than the Supermicro.

HardwareGuru komt met een overzicht van de specificaties van maar liefst vijf nieuwe moederborden van Transcend die in het komende jaar op de markt zullen verschijnen. Transcend zul je op dit moment in de pricewatch niet terugvinden, maar wellicht dat hier met de komst van deze serie plankjes verandering in komt. Bij JC-News is een review verschenen waarin de twee toekomstige top-processors tegenover elkaar worden gezet; Intel's Pentium 4 1,7GHz versus de AMD Thunderbird 1,33GHz. De review is zeer uitgebreid en bevat een klein arsenaal aan benchmarks waaronder ScienceMark, ViewPerf, 3DMark, 3D WinBench, Quake3, MDK, Unreal Tournament, Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing, iBench, Winstone en CPUMark. Daarnaast worden de resultaten uitgebreid besproken en de gebruikte termen netjes uitgelegd.

Men zou kunnen verwachten dat het gat van bijna 400MHz aan rauwe kloksnelheid genoeg is om Intel's chip een duidelijke voorsprong te geven, maar niets blijkt minder waar. In de meeste tests wint de Athlon het zelfs van de Pentium 4 en de achterstand in de enkele verloren benchmarks is nooit veel groter dan 10%. Ter verdediging van Intel mag er ook even bijgezegd worden dat de Pentium 4 in geen van de tests aanzienlijk slechter was. Het mag duidelijk zijn dat AMD voorlopig niet veel te vrezen heeft, tegen de tijd dat de 1,7GHz Pentium 4 uitkomt zullen er waarschijnlijk al 1,4GHz Palomino's op de markt zijn en Intel kampt nog steeds met een prijs-probleem. Toch is de conclusie niet helemaal pro-AMD, pas als de prijs wordt meegewogen kan de schrijver een keus maken:

I can't really straight out say that one cpu is superior to another. Each cpu wins in its own particular categories. If I were to buy one today? Okay, I'll give you that one. If I bought a cpu/motherboard/memory combo today, and I was limited to the above choices, I can pretty much guarantee you that I'd jump for the 1.33GHz Athlon. Now, the reason for this is not due to performance superiority in my preferred categories, though.

[...] The Asus A7M266 runs for around $198.75. Chuck on $227 for a quarter gigabyte of PC2100 SDRAM, and then $299.33 for the unreleased but seemingly already everywhere 1.3xGHz Athlon (the 1.30GHz and 1.33GHz seem to be, at least at this early stage, at some sort of pricing parity). That's a total of $725.08 for the combo. Actually, as I think about it, that's a bit on the expensive side for me, but in a choice limited to the reviewed components, this is rock bottom in pricing.

[...] Quick check ... okay, add in the P4-1.50 at an average price of $574.67. That brings our P4 combo to a total of ... holy smokes! Okay, this combo costs $1073.27, an amount which to me is simply far too high. This is the crux of Intel's problem today. The P4 could be a competitive part, but right now Intel and associated companies are pricing their components so that cpu/memory/motherboard combos cost nearly fifty percent higher than a competing and somewhat higher performing combo.

[...] The price chasm here actually caught me by surprise, even though I had suspected that the P4 combo might be somewhat more expensive due to memory costs and the Intel brand name, which still has a bit of strength to it. It is clear to me that Pentium 4 prices need to be slashed considerably to achieve competitive pricing. This is not going to happen, but pipe dreams are fun in their own way, aren't they?

Bij Digit Life heeft men een klein arsenaal aan gloednieuwe hardware uit te kast getrokken om te kijken hoe de GeForce het doet ten opzicht van andere kaarten in het lang verwachte 3DMark 2001. Er zijn benchmarks en screenshots gepost van een GeForce3, GeForce2 Ultra en ATi Radeon in een viertal systemen, variërende van een 1,2GHz Athlon tot een Pentium 4 overgeklokt naar 1,8GHz. Van elke sub-test in het programma zijn aparte grafieken en screenshots aanwezig en daaruit komen een paar interessante dingen naar boven drijven. Zo blijkt dat de huidige topprocessors de Vertex Shading en T&L mogelijkheden van de GeForce3 nog kunnen bijhouden en in sommige gevallen zelf kunnen verbeteren. Gelukkig voor nVidia geldt dat alleen voor de meer synthetische tests, in de scène's die dichter bij de echte wereld liggen blijkt dat het onlasten van de CPU wel degelijk nut heeft en dat er niets is dat bij de GeForce3 in de buurt kan komen:

The GeForce 3 is an unquestionable leader in this test. Even the significant difference in performance among the platforms doesn't allow other cards to catch the GeForce 3 in unequal conditions (Pentium III 1 GHz + GeForce 3 against Pentium 4 and Athlon). The T&L soft emulation worsens considerably the cards' results but it still allows it to remain a leader, except the lowest resolution. But you shouldn't thoughtlessly blame the test for being made up specially for this chip. Like the 3DMark 2000 was intended for DirectX 7.0. and all its possibilities, the new test was created having taken into consideration the DirectX 8 features, and it uses many new possibilities of this API. It's only the GeForce 3 that has a full value support of the DirectX 8, that's why its high results mustn't surprise you. As soon as other DX8 cards appear (Radeon 2 and possibly a new creation from Matrox) the GeForce 3 can get serious competitors in this test. We don't give the results obtained in the Pure Hardware T&L mode since due to some unknown reason they coincide with a usual Hardware T&L for the GeForce 3, and on other cards this mode is not available. Even we we had switched it with the tweaker for the Radeon the test wouldn't show it among the possible variants.
