Gisteren deed DPC het heel aardig in de stats, met ruim 3.6M stonden we, zoals bijna altijd tegenwoordig, op de eerste plaats.

Ook was het een goede dag wat ledenaantal betreft, maar liefst 16 mensen besloten DPC te joinen, waarmee het totaal op 4771 uitkomt. Volg het goede voorbeeld van deze 16 mensen en kijk hier hoe je mee kunt doen!

Joe Citarella van Overclockers.com heeft een preview online gezet over de Millennium Copper heatsink. De heatsink die hij in handen kreeg was een pre-production sample, dus er kan nog het één en ander aan veranderen voordat de heatsink op de markt komt.

De Millennium Copper heatsink is evenals de bekende Kanie Hedgehog volledig gemaakt van koper, maar dan wel uit één stuk. De heatsink weegt een heftige 800g en heeft een ingebouwde fan voor een optimale performance. Dat het design effectief is blijkt wel uit de resultaten: een 60Watt Thunderbird 1000 op 32 graden te houden is bijzondere prestatie. En wat ook leuk is dat de 29cfm, 5800 rpm fan die er bij zit geen echte herriemaker is :

C/Ws in the 0.15 range blur the distinction between water and air cooling - the Millenium is that good. I never thought I would see a viable air cooling solution at these C/Ws, and by "viable" I mean without excessive noise, size or expense. Pricing is not finalized, but I would bet that these units will retail someplace in the $35 range (my guess).

I have the same feeling with the Millenium that I had when I first found Alphas - revolutionary design and performance leading to a whole new era in air cooled heatsink performance, much to the benefit of consumers. If Millenium can deliver, it looks like a different ball game. Andy tells me that production units should be available in about a month. We'll have another test when available - stay tuned!

VIAHardware.com schreef al eerder iets over de VIA KT266, VIA's chipset voor AMD Socket A processoren met ondersteuning voor DDR SDRAM, maar dit keer hebben ze ook de benchmarks om hun woorden kracht bij te zetten.

De KT266 is VIA's langverwachte antwoord op ALi's MAGiK 1 en AMD's 760 chipset, beiden ook met support voor DDR geheugen en 266MHz FSB Athlons. De site mocht uit handen van VIA een erg vroeg reference board gebaseerd op deze nieuwe chipset ontvangen. De resultaten van de benchmarks die hierop zijn losgelaten zijn dus nog niet definitief, aangezien een echte moederbordmaker waarschijnlijk nogal wat aan het ontwerp kan veranderen en het BIOS natuurlijk ook nog voor verbetering vatbaar is.

Het reference plankje bezit zowel twee SDRAM sloten als twee DDR SDRAM sloten. Als de chipset officieel uit is, zullen er ook moederborden verschijnen met 4 DDR SDRAM sloten (en dus zonder ruimte voor normale SDRAM DIMM's). Dit vroege bordje van VIA had ook nog geen enkele mogelijkheid tot overclocken; ook op dit gebied zullen we even moeten wachten totdat de moederbordmakers laten zien wat zij ervan bakken.

In de benchmarks zijn de voordelen van de KT266 t.o.v. de KT133A al wel te zien, maar nog niet schrikbarend groot (helaas werd er nog niet vergeleken met een AMD760 moederbord). In Quake 3 Arena is de KT266 ook met normaal PC133 geheugen sneller dan zijn voorganger. Met DDR geheugen weet hij zich zo'n 10% boven de KT133A te plaatsen:

Andere benchmarks laten soortgelijke of kleinere verschillen zien. De conclusie is redelijk positief, zeker aangezien dit nog een vroege versie van de chipset was. VIAHardware.com verwacht dat de KT266 een groot succes wordt, vooral omdat AMD er veel vertrouwen in heeft en zelfs haar eigen AMD760 chipset daarvoor laat vallen:

The AMD760, like the 750 before it, was designed primarily to fill a gap in the market until VIA could debut their Athlon solution. However, AMD760 faces a number of problems 750 never did. Among them are high chipset prices, low quantities, and tough design restrictions. Designing a motherboard based on AMD760 has proven to be very time and resource consuming, and generally not worth the effort. Also, noise problems in the DDR controller have resulted in a number of "hacks", one of which is to reduce the number of DIMM slots to a measly two.

Because of these problems, AMD has put their weight behind the KT266. So much in fact, that AMD has refused to add Magik 1 boards and even some AMD760's to its recommended motherboard list. Also, AMD is holding back supplies of 133MHz bus processors until KT266 debuts in volume. VIA is AMD's anointed chipset maker, make no bones about it, and VIA is finally delivering in the form of VIA Apollo KT266.

Bij VR-Zone is vandaag een AMD Athlon 1,2GHz (266MHz FSB) getest op overklokbaarheid. De CPU beschikte over een "AXIA" core en beloofde dus heel wat potentie te hebben. Daarbij waren de L1-bruggen ook al standaard verbonden, scheelde dus weer wat tekenen .

Afijn, dankzij een Abit KT7A plankje @ 150MHz FSB werd de Athlon Thunderbird eenvoudig op 1425MHz gezet. Op die snelheid was de hitteproductie enorm, een Computernerd FAC7ALPHA en twee dikke casefans waren dus errug hard nodig. Waarschijnlijk dat mbv extra cooling een nóg hogere snelheid behaald zou kunnen worden, de CPU was in ieder geval in staat om posten op 1575MHz. Lees hieronder even conclusie, voor benchmarks volg je deze link.

The Amd Athlon Thunderbird 1200C/266 is a really fast processor. But, should I get a 1200B or a 1200C ? If you have a board that is able to change the multiplier, don't worry. All the 1200 chips are unlocked anyway, so you can always set the multiplier lower when you want to run it with a higher Front Side Bus speed. But it does matter if you can't change the multiplier, you surely have to get a 1200C then, because if so, you won't be able to get it at 266 FSB. That should be a waste of your 266 FSB DDR motherboard. ( For example, The ASUS A7M266 doesn't allow multiplier changing. ) And one thing you should be also aware of is that this chip really produces a LOT of heat, at 1425 - 1.95V it produces 90.3 WATT. That is a lot. Be sure to get good cooling for this chip !

Johan De Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft even de tijd genomen om een Pentium III moederborden roundup in elkaar te zetten. In zijn artikel bespreekt hij twee i815E en twee Apollo Pro 266 borden: de AOpen AX37 Pro (Pro266/DDR), MSI Pro 266 (Pro266/DDR/SDR), de Gigabyte 6OXE (i815E/SDR) en als laatste de MSI i815e Pro. Ter vergelijking zijn ook de benchmarkresultaten (Adobe Premiere, Visual C++, MPEG-2 encoding, Mercedes Benz Truck Racing, MDK2) van het Chaintech 6AJR4 Pro133A plankje verwerkt.

In zijn conclusie laat Johan weten weinig gecharmeerd te zijn van de performance van VIA's P3 DDR-platform, dat (zoals bekend) nauwelijks sneller, maar wel nog steeds duurder is dan een BX of i815 setup. Lees hieronder vast wat meer uit het verhaal:

We have talked a lot about the Athlon/Duron platform lately, so we thought it might be time to give you an update on the current status of Pentium III chipsets and motherboards. The Pentium III may be slightly slower than the Athlon, but there are still a lot of people that prefer Intel processors to those from AMD. At Ace's Hardware, we love new architectures, but few people make their purchase decision based on this.

As we've seen from these results, there is no really compelling reason to upgrade to one of these options if you already own a 440BX motherboard. The BX motherboards perform more or less the same as the VIA Apollo Pro133A options, even though they use a lower FSB setting (100 MHz).

MSI's i815 E Pro is slightly more stable than its VIA Pro266 counterpart, and is less expensive to boot. This is a clear indication that, despite the use of DDR SDRAM with the VIA Pro266, Intel's i815 EP chipset is still slightly better than the best VIA has to offer. This makes the VIA Apollo Pro266 boards rather unattractive, while the upgrade costs are relatively high given the requirement of new memory in almost all cases.

Digit Life heeft de specs en twee nudies van de Asus V6600MX. Deze low-budget videokaart zal gebaseerd zijn op de bekende GeForce 256 chip die op 120MHz geklokt wordt. De kaart zal verder 32MB SDR SDRAM @ 166MHz bevatten en enkel in kale Pure versies op markt komen. De V6600MX vervangt hiermee de V3800 TNT2 kaartjes en zal ten tijde van zijn release 75 dollar kosten. Midden april wordt hij leverbaar:

Bij The Tech Zone hebben ze vandaag een kijkje genomen naar de AMK LAN kast. Deze kast is zoals de naam aangeeft ontworpen voor netwerk feestjes wat inhoud dat de kast bijzonder portable is, maar toch veel ruimte biedt. De kast is namelijk uitgerust met vijf 5,25” bays en vier 3,5” bays wat zeker geen kattenpis is voor zo'n klein kastje (zie de foto hieronder). Om ruimte te besparen is de kast uitgerust met een erg dunne 300Watt voeding. Verder is de kast in het bezit van handige features zoals een bijna schroef vrij design en een removable motherboard tray. Een erg handige kast voor de echte feestbeesten onder ons :

Our first impression after the system was put together was "This is one cool LAN case!" The LAN is the shortest case I've ever seen but it packs more expansion room than the 19" tower case I had hanging around.
Performance from the case was very good too. Case temperature was never more than 5C above the room temp even after an hour of running Prime 95. This performance is achieved with the optional 120mm fan with move over 100 CFM of air. However be forewarn, this fan is quite loud. Even without the fan, performance of the case is still good. Overclockers will want to make sure they get the big blower however.

Electic Tech schrijft dat Fujitsu vandaag een paar nieuwe FCRAM chips heeft geïntroduceerd. FCRAM onderscheid zich niet van normaal (DDR) SDRAM door een hogere bandbreedte, maar door significant lagere latencies wat natuurlijk minstens zo belangrijk is. Er komen twee smaken chips op de markt, de A en B serie. De chips uit de A serie lopen tussen de 133 en 154MHz en de chips uit de B serie lopen tussen de 167 en 200MHz. De eerste samples uit de A serie worden verwacht in het tweede kwartaal van dit jaar en zullen 100 dollar per stuk gaan kosten:

Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. (FMI) today introduced the latest members of its Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM(TM)) series, a group of 256 Mbit, high-speed memories that incorporate the Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM interface.

The new FCRAMs, which were jointly developed with Toshiba, are designed for high-performance network systems that require very high capacities and speeds of 150MHz or more. The FCRAMs are ideal for applications that demand speeds higher than memory products currently provide, such as enterprise servers, look-up tables and high-speed buffers for network systems.

The new 2.5V FCRAMs are divided into the A Series (which feature 154MHz clock speeds) and the B Series (with 200MHz clock speeds). Both series use the SSTL-II I/O interface. Cycle times for different versions of the A series range from 30ns to 40ns; access times range from under 23ns to 30ns. For the B Series, cycle times range from 25ns to 40ns; access times are from 22ns to 30ns.

De mannen van GamePC hebben een review online gezet over de Matrox Marvel G450 eTV videokaart. Deze kaart is qua geheugen en core identiek aan de normale G450, maar verschilt op het gebied van aansluitingen. In plaats van twee CRT aansluitingen is er slechts één CRT aansluitingen aanwezig en een TV-out. Daarvoor in de plaats is wel iets terug gekomen, te weten een complete TV tuner van Philips en een video-in aansluiting .

De video-in aansluiting is voor de mensen die er van houden om homevideo’s te bewerken op de PC en met de TV Tuner is het mogelijk om TV te gluren op je PC. Met de bijgeleverde software kan je ook aan time shifting doen en kan je video softwarematig opnemen naar MPEG-2. Al met al een leuke kaart volgens de reviewer als je maar niet te veel wilt gamen:

The Matrox Marvel G450 eTV gives other video-in/video-out cards a run for their money, especially when it comes to ease of use. Matrox has packaged much of the functionality into their PC-VCR program, and near seamless integration and optimization for 3rd party products like VideoStudio 4.0 ensures you get the most for your money. As far as a pure gaming card, performance is mediocre, but few (if any) 3D gaming cards can encode straight to MPEG-2 on the fly. For those who are looking for a quick and easy way of getting video off of magnetic tapes and onto your hard drive, Matrox has definitely put its best foot forward by offering the eTV to consumers.

Bij AnandTech is een artikel verschenen over problemen met net het overklokken van de KT133A chipset. Door de multiplier van een Socket A processor te verlagen en de FSB op te hogen van 100 naar 133MHz zou het in principe mogelijk moeten zijn om betere prestaties uit elk systeem te krijgen. Toch werkte deze truc niet bij iedereen. Tot nu toe was er geen echte verklaring voor, maar in dit artikel geeft men uitleg en zelfs een oplossing. Het blijkt namelijk dat tijdens het laden van het BIOS (met de nieuwe multiplier) de default multiplier in werking is. De processor draait dus een paar seconden 33% hoger dan de ingestelde waarde en dat zorgt er in veel gevallen voor dat de PC niet verder kan opstarten. Dit gebeurt alleen op moederborden met een FSB jumper zonder multiplier dipswitches. Een oplossing voor 'slachtoffers' van zo'n moederbord is het handmatig instellen van de multiplier aan de hand van de L6 bruggen en dat wordt dan ook uitgebreid beschreven:

So theoretically in order to make your chip having a lower multiplier, you just need to follow the Frequency Selection chart in the article from Tom’s Hardware. However, when modifying those bridges, oftentimes the hardest thing to do is to cut one of these bridges. Connecting an already broken bridge is simple enough, since it can be done with a mechanical pencil or a conductive pen. Cutting a bridge can actually be dangerous, as the tools required to do so could actually damage the CPU.

Therefore, the ideal solution would minimize the number of bridges that need to be cut, while at the same time achieving our goal of lowering the default clock multiplier. Back in our AMD Thunderbird / Duron Investigation and Overclocking Discussion, we accidentally thought that the jumpers on the FIC AD-11 were in charge of the FID pins, when in fact they controlled the BP_FID pins. The result of that is we weren’t able to raise the multiplier any higher than the default, even though we could lower the multiplier.

That piece of information gave us a big hint - even if the FID pins and the BP_FID pins do not match, the chip will still work. So it is possible for us to modify either set of bridges to lower the multiplier. Since the L6 bridge controls the default clock multiplier and it has only four pairs, it is the best candidate for us to play with. Keep in mind that our goal is to let the chip boot up at a lower multiplier for a few clock cycles so that the settings from the BIOS come in and take charge.

Microsoft heeft gisteren een preview van een belangrijke stap in de .NET strategie gegeven. Het gaat om de op XML gebaseerde webservice "HailStorm". HailStorm is soort persoonlijke database waarin je een groot aantal gegevens kwijt kunt, denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan taalkeuzes, afspraken, documenten en contactinformatie. Een programma dat van Hailstorm technologie gebruik maakt kan zichzelf op die manier aanpassen aan de persoonlijke wensen van de gebruiker, op welke computer of plaats dan ook. Voor de beveiliging wordt gebruik gemaakt van Microsofts PassPort, maar het bedrijf wilde benadrukken dat het gebruik van Microsoft server- of clientsoftware absoluut niet nodig is. Men demonstreerde HailStorm daarom niet alleen op Windows XP en PocketPC, maar ook op MacOS, Palm en verschillende UNIX smaken:

"Today's briefing and demonstrations for the first time publicly drill down into the technology that we believe will play a key role in the future delivery of rich .NET services. These services place the individual at the center of the technology in their life," said Muglia. "We believe developers will derive significant benefit by building services that offer enhanced value to their customers. This includes enabling users to automatically log onto their favorite Web sites, receive timely and relevant notifications, and securely share their calendar, contact and other information with anybody, anywhere and on any device."

Het Amerikaanse Angel Technologies is van plan om over twee jaar te beginnen met het aanbieden van breedband internet via een vliegtuig. Dit door een High Altitude Long Operation (HALO) machine met een grote antenne aan boord te gebruiken die boven alle lijnvluchten en weersomstandigheden rondjes draait. Op deze manier kan een gebied met een diameter van ongeveer 120 kilometer voorzien worden van internet. Drie van deze vliegtuigen lossen elkaar af om 24 uur per dag, 7 dagen per week beschikbaar te blijven. Gebruikers kunnen met een speciale antenne de 38GHz signalen opvangen en zodoende gebruik maken van de verbinding, die snelheden van 200 tot 600KB/s moet halen. Bedrijven kunnen zelfs verbindingen van 1,5MB/s huren en in het begin, als er nog niet veel klanten zijn, kan deze snelheid nog verder oplopen. Het bedrijf is van plan te beginnen in Los Angeles, maar heeft zo'n 200 stedelijke gebieden op het oog:

Angel Technologies Corporation and its partners are creating a wireless broadband "super-metropolitan area" network to interconnect tens to hundreds of thousands of subscribers at multi-megabit per second data rates. In addition, Angel can easily and immediately implement network-wide performance enhancements through scheduled upgrades of modular components.

C't weet te melden dat Ricoh op de Cebit zal komen met een voorseriemodel van een DVD+RW drive. Die RW's zijn in normale DVD-ROM en standalone DVD-players afspeelbaar. Het product komt in de handel in het vierde kwartaal van 2001. De brander zal CD-Rs op 12 speed, CD-RWs op 10 speed en DVD+RWs op 2,5 speed gaan bakken. Over de prijs wilde Ricoh nog niets loslaten. Die DVD+RW soll, wie auch die DVD-R, in handelsüblichen DVD-ROM-Laufwerken und DVD-Playern lesbar sein. Großer Pluspunkt dieses Formats gegenüber der DVD-R ist allerdings seine Wiederbeschreibbarkeit: So sind unter anderem Videorecorder auf DVD+RW-Basis denkbar; Philips hat bereits ein solches Gerät für den Herbst dieses Jahres angekündigt.

CNN.com meldt dat er een nieuwe worm rondkruipt. De worm draagt de naam Magistr en is in tegenstelling tot Kournikova en NakedWife een stuk gemener. Kournikova verstopte alleen maar e-mail servers en NakedWife sloopte je Windows-directory. Magistr probeert je echter helemaal kapot te maken door je privé-bestanden te openbaren, al je data vernietigen en zelfs je pc invalide te maken:

"It's similar to other worms, but it's more sophisticated and destructive," says Pete Privateer, president of Pelican Security. Users of Pelican Security's SafeTnet product are already safe from the virus, he says.

Users of Norton Antivirus are also protected "if they download the latest virus signatures that can detect Magistr," says Stephen Trilling, director of Symantec's Antivirus Research Center.

De worm kan zichzelf op drie verschillende manier verspreiden: via e-mail, een local area network of via gedeelde schijven.

Zoals gewoonlijk komt de worm via een attachement bij een slachtoffer binnen. Vervolgens opent de worm het adressenboek om naar nieuwe slachtoffers te zoeken. Er worden random subjects aangemaakt door gebruik te maken van tekst-bestanden van de PC en van verschillende Engelse en Spaanse zinnen. Elk bericht krijgt zes bestanden mee gestuurd. Vijf van die bestanden zijn doodgewone bestanden als Word-documentjes, maar de zesde file is een executable waarin Magistr schuilt.

Op WebWereld kunnen we lezen dat Hewlett-Packard dinsdag een nieuwe serie laserjetprinters uitbrengt die voorzien zijn van een internetverbinding. Deze printers kunnen bijvoorbeeld via e-mail waarschuwen dat de toner bijna leeg is. Vervolgens kan het apparaat zelf even een bestelling voor een nieuwe toner plaatsen. Zoals het hoort zijn de printers ook voorzien van een ingebouwde webserver, waarmee ze via internet printopdrachten kunnen verwerken vanaf wap-telefoons of laptops. Hewlett-Packard heeft de afgelopen periode een proef met de nieuwe apparaten gedaan in onder meer luchthavens en hotels. Volgens CEO Carly Fiorina is het doel van de nieuwe producten het 'printen naar het hart van het internet te brengen'. Op die manier hoopt HP de marktpenetratie en de winstgevendheid op te stuwen.

MREn wees ons op dit bericht van Pioneer waar men de DVR-A03 drive aankondigd. Dit is een apparaat dat minder dan 1000 euro moet gaan kosten en zowel DVD-R en DVD-RW als CD-R en CD-RW kan lezen en schrijven. Schijfjes geschreven op de drive kunnen probleemloos worden ingelezen in normale DVD-ROM en DVD Video spelers. De drive moet rond het begin van de zomer in de winkels liggen en zal onder andere gebruikt worden door Packard Bell, Apple en Compaq. Pioneer doet echter niet mee aan de groep van bedrijven die hebben besloten dat DVD+RW de standaard moet worden:

Product Manager (Optical systems) for Pioneer Europe's Multimedia Division, Chris Tampsett commented: "The DVR-A03 introduces the capacity, flexibility and quality of DVD storage and playback to a far wider range of applications. It marks a turning point for this technology, as we will now see DVDs acceptance in corporate, technical and home use on a large scale. The market for CD-R grew exponentially and we will now see DVD-R/RW become the defacto standard."

Milestones are many for both sides of the business. This year's list of new products includes internal DVD-R solutions for jukeboxes, 4.7GB DVD-R drive and 16X DVD-ROM drives. Pioneer will launch a consumer DVD recorder later in 2001. This home DVD recorder will radically change the consumer's audio visual experience. Pioneer will make an official announcement in the second half of 2001.
