Taking a clip of digital media captured and edited using Pinnacle’s DV500 Plus we proceeded to test the DVD mastering abilities of the Pioneer unit. Mastering was performed with another Pinnacle product: Studio DV editor. Final DVD writing made use of DVDit from Sonic Solutions, each sold separately. In the end, we found that the 2X DVD-R rating of the DVR-A03 is somewhat misleading. Burning DVD-R media at 2X requires a test burn, which effectively doubles the burn time and gives you an effective 1X burn. We found similar results on the Apple G4 using the latest versions of iMovie and iDVD.![]()
Overall we feel that the DVR-A03 is a wonderful product. Compared to the $5000 DVD-R drives of last year, the A03 is set to take the optical market for a joy ride. No, the drive isn’t as fast as the latest CD-R drives from Phillips and Plextor or the latest 72X CD-ROM drives, but for an all in one drive its performance is more than acceptable. The only drawback to the drive it its current price; $750 street makes the drive slightly out of reach for the casual user. Still, it certainly makes DVD mastering more affordable than ever before, and we feel that the DVR-A03 will help to bring DVD-R and DVD-RW to the masses.
