FreeOS komt met een aardig berichtje over een horloge van IBM. 't Moge duidelijk zijn dat dit geen gewoon horloge is, IBM is tenslotte Swatch niet, en dat blijkt ook wel uit de specs:

Een wel héél bijzonder horloge dus, met een al even bijzondere implementatie van het Linux OS. De hele X-Server is bijvoorbeeld nog maar 1,8MB groot en IBM wil dit nog verder reduceren tot minder dan 1MB. En natuurlijk kan iedereen z'n eigen applicaties schrijven voor z'n horloge:

The wristwatch runs the Linux 2.2.1 kernel with the ARM patch from Ben Williamson. According to IBM, there are certain issues regarding the non-availability of this patch in the latest stable kernel release. The ARM processor that powers the watch runs at 19MHz, is RISC based and which according to estimates is almost equivalent to a 100 Mhz Pentium. The motherboard for the watch was fabricated at IBM's Japan research center. The kernel, which required some massive hacking including the shell that the watch runs, was `tweaked' at Big Blue's research center at Bangalore. As far as connectivity is concerned the researchers have solved the problem by providing IR (Infra Red) support and Radio Frequency Wireless connectivity. The wristwatch even supports the latest Blue Tooth protocol to communicate with intelligent devices around it. For synchronizing content with your laptop / personal computer, you may use either the Infra Red support or the Communication ports (COM ports) on the docking station to interface with your laptop/pc. The docking station is also designed to re-charge the batteries.

The Register meldt dat het Duitse leger èn het Duitse Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken alle Microsoft-producten in de ban gaan doen. Reden hiervoor is de angst die de Duitsers hebben voor eventuele 'achterdeurtjes' in Microsoft's software waar met name de Amerikaanse National Security Agency (NSA) - berucht vanwege onder meer het spionage-netwerk Echelon - gebruik van zou kunnen maken.

Daarom stopt de Bundeswehr in 'gevoelige' toepassingsgebieden nu dus met álle software die uit de VS afkomstig is. Iets dergelijks gebeurt ook bij het Duitse ministerie van BuZa: plannen voor video-conferencing met haar ambassades worden door dit ministerie in de ijskast gezet.

Deutsche Telekom en Siemens hebben inmiddels aangekondigd een eigen beveiligingssysteem te gaan ontwikkelen waarin de Bundeswehr wèl vertrouwen kan hebben. Misschien is Security Enhanced Linux ook wel iets voor onze oosterburen (alhoewel dat ontwikkeld is door de NSA ):

The German foreign office and Bundeswehr are pulling the plugs on Microsoft software, citing security concerns, according to the German news magazine Der Spiegel. Spiegel claims that German security authorities suspect that the US National Security Agency (NSA) has 'back door' access to Microsoft source code, and can therefore easily read the Federal Republic's deepest secrets. The Bundeswehr will no longer use American software (we surmise this includes Larry and Scott as well) on computers used in sensitive areas. The German foreign office has meanwhile put plans for videoconferencing with its overseas embassies on hold, for similar reasons. Under secretary of state Gunter Pleuger is said by Spiegel to have discovered that "for technical reasons" the satellite service that was to be used was routed via Denver, Colorado.

De EETimes meldt dat Sun tijdens de Async 2001 conferentie heeft geprobeerd ontwikkelaars ervan te overtuigen dan chips die niet met gezette timings werken vele malen sneller kunnen zijn dat chips die zich aan een strak tijdschema moeten houden, zoals alle chips die nu op te markt zijn. Het bedrijf heeft een proto-type van de 'FleetZero', een chip die pas over vijf jaar af zal zijn, maar nu al geschikt is om te demonstreren hoe belangrijk asynchrone verwerking kan zijn. Men roept al jaren dat er een eind moet komen aan de mogelijkheden om kloksnelheid verder op te voeren, maar keer op keer worden de grenzen verbroken. Toch denkt men dat het uiteindelijk onvermijdelijk is om over te stappen op een ander soort chips.

Volgens de naar buiten gebrachte documenten verspillen de huidige chips 95% van hun kracht omdat alles perfect synchroon moet blijven. De FleetZero maakt gebruik van een veld vol losse processor-cellen die met een netwerk van korte draadjes aan elkaar zijn verbonden. Het is de taak van de software om de communicatie tussen de onderdelen te regelen, niet die van de processorontwerper en een externe systeemklok:

FleetZero replaces synchronous arithmetic operations with data-movement operations among asynchronous processor blocks called ships. In place of synchronous chips' instructions are binary codes that specify the routes data items need to take among the processor blocks to accomplish the same tasks that synchronous chips perform via sequential operations. Software compilers would manage on-chip communications, routing data among the asynchronous blocks.

Sun Labs claims its processing ships will scale up gracefully to "flotillas" of systems-on-chip. Making data communications — not logical operations — the core problem of computing will lower costs, quicken overall execution speeds and cut power consumption compared with synchronous designs, Sutherland contends.

"Communications on a chip has become the most important chip-design problem," he said. "Not only do the wires by which chips communicate their data occupy more space than the transistors, but they are also slower and consume more power. FleetZero puts the compiler writer in charge of the wires, making much better use of computing resources."

Electronic Buyers' News meldt dat Intel de uitbreiding van zijn chip-fabriek in Hudson, Massachusets heeft uitgesteld. Dit nieuws volgt vlak na de bekendmaking dat de plannen voor de bouw van een 300mm wafer fab in Ierland voorlopig in de ijskast zijn gezet. In december werd de bouw al met een jaar gedelayed en nu is daar nog een jaar vertraging aan toegevoegd. De reden is volgens Intel de slechte situatie in de halfgeleider markt, waardoor de komst van extra productiecapaciteit minder snel is gewenst dan oorspronkelijk verwacht. De geplande upgrade van de Hudson fab vindt wel doorgang. Momenteel wordt de fabriek voorzien van nieuwe 0,13micron en 0,18micron productie apparatuur:

Intel Corp. Friday confirmed that the chip market slowdown has claimed its second fab victim in a week, as a $500 million module 4 expansion at the firm's Hudson, Mass., complex has been suspended for an indefinite time. This comes only days after Intel postponed its 300-mm wafer fab in Ireland for a year until late 2003.

An Intel spokesman said the separate $1 billion upgrade of two existing modules at the Hudson fab continues on schedule. The firm is installing 0.18-micron and 0.13-micron processing equipment in Mod 2 and Mod 3, which had been empty shells previously. Some 0.18-micron chip production is already underway in Mod 2, he said.

Infoworld komt met het bericht dat Silicon Graphics (SGI) naast haar actuele op MIPS processoren en SGI's eigen Irix gebaseerde Origin-systemen ook Origin 3000 systemen gaat bouwen op basis van Intel's 64-bits Itanium-processor en Linux als operating system. SGI wil het bovendien mogelijk maken om Linux met méér dan 64 processoren te kunnen draaien. SGI's opperhoofd Robert Bishop wil graag dat Linux' schaalbaarheid vergroot wordt, en wijst er op dat als Linux zich niet in die richting ontwikkelt SGI dat zèlf zal gaan aanpakken en natuurlijk op de markt zal gaan aanbieden.

Voorlopig zijn de systemen nog niet beschikbaar, SGI wacht met de introductie totdat Intel's Itanium processor goed verkrijgbaar is.

By incorporating the Origin 3000 system architecture into its Itanium-Linux systems, SGI aims to differentiate its product line from Itanium-Linux products from other vendors, Bishop said.

"The system will have the very fast multiprocessor interconnect in the NUMAflex architecture, and will get differentiated from our competitors' products with its very high performance."

NUMAflex is the third-generation implementation of SGI's NUMA shared-memory, multiprocessing architecture. The new computers will be aimed at the Internet market.

"Remember that the performance differential comes from the high-speed interconnect, which is a hardware feature that is transparent to the software," he said. "We build hardware with interconnect speed below 50 nanoseconds, and we can interconnect across 1 terabyte of shared memory in 500 nanoseconds. So if the software has scalability and NUMA features, our system would drive it extremely fast, and that would differentiate us from our competition even if they are using scalable NUMA Linux."

De overklok-fanaten van Bunny's Workshop hebben een 1,33GHz Thunderbird processor tot het uiterste geduwd. Deze chip is nog niet door AMD aangekondigd maar al wel op verschillende plaatsen opgedoken, waaronder uiteraard in Japan. Door een Asus A7M266 moederbord aan te passen was het mogelijk om een voltage van 1,95 in te stellen. Daarnaast werd de FSB opgeschroefd van 133 naar 188MHz DDR en ook de multiplier moest één volle stap omhoog; van 10 naar 11. De core kwam daarmee boven de 2GHz uit, 2071,41MHz om precies te zijn. Om te voorkomen dat het hele zaakje verdampte werd een zelfgebouwde koeling met vloeibare stikstof gebruikt:

Ook in dit geval ging het om een AXIA core. Deze Hideki kwam met een 1,2GHz AXHA Thunderbird niet hoger dan 1,9GHz.

Bij Digit Life is een review verschenen van de ATi Radeon VE videokaart. Dit low-end beestje is beroofd van een T&L unit, en moet het ook doen met slechts een enkele pixel pipeline. Het DDR geheugen, 32MB in totaal, werkt verder op een slechts 64-bit brede bus. Met deze specs moet de Radeon VE het niet van zijn 3D-prestaties hebben; deze ontstijgen namelijk in sommige gevallen nauwelijks die van een TNT2 Ultra. Waar de kaart wel in uitblinkt is zijn 2D beeldkwaliteit, HydraVision Multiple Monitor ondersteuning en de aanwezigheid van een DVI-to-VGA adapter en een TV-Out. Voor de prijs van 90 dollar haal je dus wel degelijk veel waar in huis, aldus onderstaande conclusie:

Despite low results in 3D, the RADEON VE showed a high level of price/performance/"function saturation" ratio. Priced at $90-95, the card remains far behind the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX - cards which have almost the same price, but the RADEON VE shows an excellent quality in 2D, what is untypical for "noname"-cards on the GeForce2 MX, plus it features the HydraVision technology which is similar to the NVIDIA TwinView. And such cards are much more expensive than $100.

We can advise you to buy the ATI RADEON VE if you are working mainly in business sector or in hard 2D-applications. A good choice for those who needs to join two monitors. Besides, remember that as always ATI provides high quality of playback of DVD and MPEG4 movies.

Prijsverlagingen van Intel en 3Com kunnen de toepassing van Gigabit Ethernet netwerkkaarten in mainstream servers nog dit jaar gemeengoed maken, schrijft EETimes. Vorige week introduceerde 3Com een nieuwe low-cost Gigabit NIC met een prijs van 219 dollar, een flink stuk lager dan de tot nu toe gangbare prijzen van 400 tot 700 dollar. Intel, samen met 3Com leider op de netwerkkaarten-markt, werkt aan een nieuwe single-chip Gigabit oplossing die de productiekosten van Gigabit kaarten aanzienlijk kan verlagen. De komst van single-chip Fast Ethernet chipsets resulteerde destijds in een explosieve toename van het gebruik van 100Mbit Fast Ethernet NICs. Voorafgaand op de komst van deze nieuwe 82544EI Gigabit controller heeft Intel vorige maand de prijs van hun bestaande Gigabit NIC met 45% verlaagd.

De Gigabit controllers van Intel en 3Com kunnen overweg met standaard koperen CAT5 bekabeling. Beide chips hebben support voor PCI-X en 'jumbo frames'. Dit laatste maakt het mogelijk om met grotere ethernet frames van 9000 in plaats van 1500 bytes te werken. Het resultaat is een performance-verbetering van ongeveer 20%:

The 82544EI controller from Intel is sampling now, and a NIC based upon it is expected to ship late in the second quarter or early in the third, shortly after the 82544EI moves into volume production, McLaughlin said.

[...] The rivalry between Intel and 3Com, which together hold roughly 80 percent of the Ethernet NIC business, is juicing the market, said analyst Conover. Over the next two years, he said, probably 80 percent of servers will include one or more Gigabit Ethernet NICs, and so will 10 to 15 percent of the workstations used in offices and engineering groups.

After that come desktops, said David Borison, product-line manager in 3Com's server connectivity division, who said he expects the desktop market to adopt Gigabit Ethernet beginning in 2003.

[...] Both the 3Com card and the forthcoming Intel NIC based on the 8254EI support the PCI-X bus standard at 133 MHz.

CNNfn komt met het nieuws dat Intel morgen de eerste mobiele 1GHz chip zal introduceren. De snelste processor voor laptops van dit moment is de 850MHz mobile Pentium III. Doormiddel van SpeedStep kan de snelheid van de nieuwe chip worden teruggezet naar 700MHz, waardoor het stroomverbruik daalt tot 2 Watt. Hoeveel vermogen de chip op volle snelheid eet wordt echter niet vermeld. Naast de 1GHz Pentium III zal er ook een 900MHz versie voor notebooks komen. Als laatste wordt er ook nog een nieuwe chip voor budget-laptops aangekondigd, de 750MHz mobile Celeron. De prijzen van deze chips zijn volgens het bericht respectievelijk 772, 562 en 170 dollar:

Used in full-size and "thin-and-light" notebooks, the chip will improve advanced applications such as those involving digital photography, video processing, voice recognition and 3D gaming, the company said.

"Over the last several years, the mobile growth has exceeded that of the overall PC industry, and it's projected to continue to do so," said Frank Spindler, vice president of Intel's architecture group and general manager of the mobile platforms group.

"One of the reasons is that we're providing the sort of performance levels on notebooks that rival the fastest desktops," he said.

Rolotech heeft een review geschreven van de gloednieuwe Matrox Marvel G450 eTV videokaart annex TV-tuner annex beeldbewerkingskaart, uitgerust met 32MB DDR-geheugen en een geïntegreerde TV-tuner van Philips.

De Marvel G450 is als videokaart identiek aan de 'gewone' Matrox G450, zij het dat 'ie niet voorzien is van twee VGA-outputs maar van één VGA- en één video-kanaal. De DualHead mogelijkheden worden hierdoor dus beperkt tot één monitor en één TV. De aansluitmogelijkheden zijn legio, nadeel is wel dat de eTV niet is voorzien van een 'break-out box' of iets dergelijks, je zult 't moeten doen met de beruchte kabelsalade achter je machine. De Marvel eTV kan overigens overweg met een prettig aantal operating systemen: MS Windows 2000, 9x, ME, en NT 4, IBM OS/2 en Linux. De reviewers wisten de kaart overigens ook te laten draaien op een bêta-versie van Windows XP.

De 2D-prestaties zijn volgens de reviewer prima, de 3D-prestaties zijn minder wereldschokkend en liggen op het niveau van nVidia TNT2 Ultra. De multimedia-prestaties zijn ook prima, zij het dat de eTV wèl een flinke CPU naast zich wil hebben, MPEG-encoding geschiedt namelijk niet door de eTV zelf maar wordt 'uitbesteed' aan de CPU, die volgens de reviewer tenminste op 900MHz moet draaien om echt goede resultaten te behalen. Het afspelen van DVD's is vervolgens wèl weer een sterke kant van de eTV: wie een DVD-titel afspeelt op een op de eTV aangesloten televisie kan zonder merkbaar performance-verlies op z'n computer doorwerken. Al met al een prima kaart dus, zoals ook blijkt uit de volgende conclusie:

The G450 eTV is a very good multimedia accelerator. It offers many features that will appeal to digital video and music enthusiasts, and could very well form the core of a powerful home entertainment system. Think of it – you can play DVD movies full-screen on a TV using the eTV’s built-in DVD decoding and powerful TV-output capabilities. You can also have your PC act as a digital video recorder, so you can burn TV programs/movies to CD for later viewing, or even setup your computer to automatically record programs so that you won’t miss them – even if you’re on vacation.

The 3D gaming performance is also pretty okay, if you consider the fact that this card isn’t marketed toward the hard-core gamer. The highest I could get this card to run at in games (with acceptable performance and frame-rate counts) was around 1024x768x32 – and the software titles still played relatively well. In fact, I managed a Quake3 TimeDemo run at 1024x768x32 with all the detail set to their highest levels, and got a pretty good 41fps (P!!! 1Ghz, 192MB RAM)

The bottom line? If you’re a dedicated A/V aficionado looking for a hard-core multimedia videocard, the G450 eTV will meet your needs, and then some. It offers tremendous performance and capabilities at a low price, and is well suited to its role as the core of a good, all-round multimedia machine.

MacOS Rumors meldt dat Motorola mogelijk al in augustus een 1GHz versie van de PowerPC 7450 (aka G4 Plus) op de markt brengt. Er wordt gespeculeerd dat Apple op de MacWorld New York in juli een 1GHz model van de PowerMac G4 zal aankondigen. Tegerlijkertijd volgt de introductie van een 800, 866 en 933MHz PowerMac. Het eerstgenoemde model zal waarschijnlijk direct na zijn aankondiging verkrijgbaar zijn. Op korte termijn kunnen we volgens MacOS Rumors nieuwe 667 en 733MHz dual processor PPC 7450 PowerMacs verwachten. De beschikbaarheid van deze machientjes zou een kwestie van weken zijn:

New information acquired through Motorola sources points to firm plans for the company's new PowerPC 7450 processor, now used in Apple's PowerMac G4 667/733 models, to scale in two steps to 1GHz.

Apple, however, is presently expected to announce both steps in a single event: Macworld New York this July. Similarly to the company's unveiling of its first two 7450-based PowerMacs, some of the announced models will be available immediately (733 and 800MHz versions), others "soon" (866 and 933MHz), and the high-end model at 1GHz will probably not ship until the end of August -- about six weeks after Macworld.
