National kondigt 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet chip aan

National Semiconductor maakt trots melding van het feit dat het als eerste fabrikant een Ethernet chip op de markt brengt die compatible is met zowel 10, 100 als 1000Mbps Ethernet:

National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM - news) today announced the industry's first single-chip 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet transceiver, the only chip that is backward compatible to existing Ethernet infrastructures.

National's DP83891 Gig PHYTER(TM) combines three speeds of Ethernet operation on a single chip, allowing manufacturers to install it in applications such as switches, workgroups, uplinks, workstations and node cards. Since the triple-speed Gig PHYTER operates over the Category 5 unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) copper wiring that already exists in most office buildings, network administrators are able to upgrade their Ethernet easily and inexpensively.

About Gig PHYTER

The DP83891 is a full-feature physical layer transceiver with integrated PMD sublayers to support 10BASE-TX, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T Ethernet protocols, and is compliant with IEEE 802.3 specifications, including: IEEE 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3 compliant Auto-Negotiation, IEEE 802.3u MII and IEEE 802.3z GMII.

Gig PHYTER is designed for easy implementation of 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LANs. It uses standard single Quad TX-Transformer interface and performs error-free operations at over 140 meters, 40 meters greater than IEEE specifications. This robust operation ensures successful deployment of the Gigabit technology within an existing 10/100M environment using CAT5 cabling.

Other features of the Gig PHYTER include fully IEEE 802.3u -compliant Auto-negotiation at all three speeds of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and 1000 Mbps. Gig PHYTER uses a variety of on-chip circuits to minimize the total cost of the system while increasing the performance. The on-chip circuitry includes Adaptive Equalization, echo cancellation, cross-talk cancellation, precision Analog to Digital converters, forward error correction and others that allow robust and error-free operation.

Gig PHYTER's digital signal processor (DSP) core is based on National's proven Physical Layer technology used in the Mac PHYTER(TM) and Ds PHYTER(TM) transceivers.

Een 1GB NIC in je PC steken is volkomen nutteloos. Een 1GB nic zou theoretisch (even het protocol en ISOlayer overhead voor het gemak niet meerekenen) 1000mbit/8 125MByte p/sec kunnen halen. Dat kan in theorie je PCI bus maar net trekken, maar geld niet voor het rest van je systeem. En zekerz niet een OS als Win98. (die ergens blijft steken bij de 11mb/sec) Er zijn testen te vinden op het web tussen 100 en 1000mbit. Het verschil is hoe triest het ook klinkt "minimaal".
Wat 1000mbit wel nuttig voor is om 2 100mbit switches met elkaar te 'linken'..
Of je hang je switch met 1GB aan een Alpha server met 64bit PCI bus en een GOED systemachitecture..

In c't stand een paar maand geleden een test van een aantal Gigabit Ethernet kaarten. De maximale snelheid was geloof ik 35MB/s op een Alpha met 64-bit PCI. Een PII met 32-bit PCI haalde maar 25MB/s.

Tsja... Als die tranceiver 95 dollar kost klinkt dat wel leuk, maar hoeveel kost een kaartje op basis van dat ding? (M.a.w.: Wat komt daar nog aan kosten bij?)

Het zou een handig upgrade-pad naar gigabit kunnen zijn voor in de toekomst.

Op zich natuurlijk heel leuk bedacht, dat je iets uitbrengt wat volledig downwards compatible is, tot aan 10 Mbit, maar persoonlijk denk ik dat de 10 Mbit optie nogal onnodig is.

Er zullen niet veel bedrijven zijn die van 10Mbit zullen gaan upgraden naar GigaBit, dus 100Mbit en 1000Mbit was voldoende geweest. Het is gewoon zonde van je geld om Iets wat Gigabit aan kan, ook 10Mbit support te geven.

Tevens is het voor de "Home" users ook niet interessant, want de kosten voor een GigaBit Switch zijn gewoon volledig onbetaalbaar, en Hubs zijn er al helemaal niet voor.

Persoonlijk vind ik de 10Mbit support een beetje verspilling van hun R&D $.

Ja is misschien verspilling...maar het bedrijfs leven vraagt om volledig downwards compatibiliteit. dus om hun product een groter publiek te geven is dat natuurlijk gewoon goed, waarschijnlijk is het toch niet zo moeilijk geweest om dat in te bouwen...basis 10/100 is er al.

ik vindhet juist handig dat die 10mbit er in zit, denk alleen maar aan een kabelmodem, die zijn allemaal 10mb... op die manier zou ik me dus op 10mb naar de modem kunnen verbinden en op 100 of 1000 naar een andere pc of netwerk..

maar ja wie heeft er nou 1000mbit, lijkt me redelijk onbetaalbaar mat alle randapparatuur er bij..

Maar als je dat wilt koop je toch gewoon een 10Mbit en een 1000Mbit kaart? Dan ben je waarschijnlijk goedkoper uit, en je kunt ze ook nog allebei tegelijk gebruiken.

Het gaat hier natuurlijk niet om een ethernetkaart van $95.

National Semiconductors biedt de losse chip voor $95
bij afname van 1000 stuks aan fabrikanten die er een end-user kaart omheen bouwen.

Zoals de alom bekende RTL8139A/B chip van Realtek die zo'n beetje op elke netwerkkaart zit.

zalig ... een nic die zelf foute paren in netwerkbekabeling corrigeert

een bedrijf zal meestal in stukken upgraden ... en als ze nu al een 1Gb nic kunnen steken (terwijl al de rest van hun materiaal nog op 10/100 draait) in een nieuwe pc, zullen ze eerder grijpen naar deze oplossing
