Wat onder andere wel interessant was was deze vraag over de prijs van de Voodoo 4 en 5:

SimHQ.com: How are the various cards in the new lineup going to be positioned against each other? There are a lot of SKUs coming and we imagine it's going to be confusing for customers to determine exactly which card is right for them. How are you going to help users understand the differences??

3dfx: We do have quite a few products coming out. That is why we made the Voodoo Scaleable Architecture... We enjoy giving consumers a lot of choices. We think the SKUs are positioned extremely well. In our Voodoo4 4500 card, we expect the gamer without a lot of dough to throw around to really be able to get a bargain deal for a great price....a single VSA-100 chip with 32 MB RAM at $199.00.

Dat is dus $ 199 voor een kaart met maar één VSA-100 chip en 32 MB RAM. Dat is wel erg veel voor zo'n kaart want dat komt neer op een dikke 400 gulden. Zou je dan de kaart met 4 VSA-100 chips en 128 MB RAM willen dan betaal je dus $ 796, wat gewoon erg duur is voor zo'n kaartje vooral nu de NV15 eraan komt en waarschijnlijk een stuk prettiger geprijsd zal worden.

Bruhn said the biggest problem most colleges were having with Napster was in one particular part of their network operations -- the connections between the campus and the slow-speed public Internet. By keeping Napster traffic off those connections, Bruhn said he was hopeful that campus networks could operate normally even as massive MP3 downloads continued.

Bruhn said Indiana University will allow Napster back on campus this weekend when Napster's work on the revisions is finished, though Bruhn said network officials will continue to monitor usage. Do not buy this card now! The Viper II may perform pretty well in some benchmarks, but there are many other cards out there that (are only slightly more expensive, but) deliver so much more. Also, we are nearing another spring season of new graphic card releases, so the prices on winter chips will drop soon. Maybe S3/Diamond will deliver on their promises of better drivers, but should the consumer have to wait for a product that they already paid for? I say S3/Diamond gives us the card and we pay half up front, then the other half when they finish the job. Would you pay for half of a new car?[break]3D Spotlight was een stuk positiever over de kaart maar ook zij vonden dat de drivers verbeterd kunnen worden.[/break]The Diamond Viper II is a good product that I feel needs some work with the drivers. If the drivers were able to produce excellent 3D image quality without the distortions of the current driver versions, I would have felt more highly of this board.

The Viper does do what it claims to do in one area though. It performs wonderfully with great frame rates. If you’re an overclocker though, you may not want to use this board. Overclocking will be limited by the AGP bus speed.

With my experience with the board, 75MHz AGP was the highest I could get. One thing that cannot be overlooked it the price. This board is really cheap compared to NVIDIA’s boards. The Diamond Viper to can be bought for only $140 to $150. This board represents one of the best deals around. The latest technology with a low price is always on the mind of a computer hardware buyer. The Viper II excels in both of those areas.

In een interview met Planet Internet wordt een aantal vragen over het hoe en waarom van de petitie beantwoord.Voor de mensen die het nog niet weten, een paar dagen geleden heeft een informaticastudent, Volkert de Buisonje, een on-line petitie gestart om te zorgen dat we snel flat-free kunnen internetten. Toen Planet Multimedia vroeg wat de motivatie was om met de petite te beginnen antwoorde hij:

Ontevredenheid over de huidige stand van zaken in de Nederlandse internettoegangsmarkt, met name voor consumenten. Internettoegang is te duur. Dat het te traag is, dat is misschien ook wel een probleempje voor sommige mensen, maar dat is een kwestie van afwachten op nieuwe ontwikkelingen. Maar die prijs, dat is de absolute prioriteit. Voor iemand die meer dan een uur per dag internet, zijn de kosten al onacceptabel hoog.

En ook de kabelbedrijven zijn niet perfect (veel klachten over kwaliteit, en ook zij zijn binnen hun eigen netwerken monopolisten, net als de KPN). Bovendien is een groot deel van Nederland sowieso overgeleverd aan KPN, omdat de kabelbedrijven daar (nog) geen alternatieve vorm van toegang bieden.

Bij mijn vakantie in de Verenigde Staten vorig jaar zomer werd pas goed duidelijk hoe hopeloos wij daar achter lopen: ze hebben daar nog nooit van een lokale telfoontik gehoord en als gevolg daarvan zitten ze gemiddeld 6 keer zo lang op internet dan wij. En de EU zich maar afvragen waarom wij zo achterlopen. Bovendien is de V.S. ook veel verder met nieuwe ontwikkelingen, zoals ADSL.

De maat was bij mij vol toen ik uiteindelijk belazerd werd door een bedrijf die gouden bergen beloofde op dit gebied (namelijk Superweb). Dit bedrijf beloofde 0800-internettoegang tegen een vast maandelijks tarief. Dit liep dus uit op een fiasco, en bewees dat de huidige tariefstructuur van KPN zo'n abonnementsvorm nou eenmaal niet mogelijk maakt.

Hij had nog veel meer te zeggen, wat je hier kan lezen.

The Rock schrijft dat er weer nieuws is over de World Online beursgang, dit keer dat de medewerkers die van de mogelijkheid gebruik hebben gemaakt om aandelen te kopen diep in de schulden zitten (leedvermaak ).

AMSTERDAM Internetbedrijf World Online heeft voor de eigen werknemers 22 mln. euro (ruim 44 mln.gulden) beschikbaar gesteld voor renteloze leningen. Met dat geld konden de medewerkers vorige week bij de beursgang aandelen kopen in het eigen bedrijf.

Mensen die gebruik hebben gemaakt van de regeling, worstelen nu met schulden. Die lopen soms op tot enkele malen het jaarsalaris.

Kwam net een mailtje tegen in mijn Outlook van Hilbert Hagedoorn die meldde dat hij op Guru3D een review heeft gepost van de GigaByte GA GF2560 GeForce SDR videokaart met S-VHS output. Hieronder een gedeelte:

Has gigabyte released this product too late ? I honestly can't tell. To this editors humble opinion it should have been in the stores in December 1999 around Christmas. Also an unexpected factor that has become a trend in this series videocard is the usage of DDR (Double Data Rate) memory. There is a huge demand for DDR based card however Gigabyte did not (yet) engage this option. Therefore the GF2560 is targeted at the low-cost market. It's is an overall SDR GeForce card which performs about the same as all other SDRAM based GeForce videocards. It's a good and stable product. We like that our version has a S-VHS output. We were able to tweak the card up-to a core of 148 MHz without any extra/additional cooling. (at default 120 MHz).

The manual is great, it explains all install instructions detailed with pictures and clear text, if you run into a problem you can be sure you will find the answer in this manual. We also like the fact that this product comes with a Full version of Need For Speed III.

In total, the price for this product is really good. You pay about $220-$230 US for this card. Besides this you'll get good driver, tech support and of course a high-quality and highly overclockable videocard.

WebWereld meldt in dit artikel dat internetprovider Wish vanaf 1 mei flat-fee internettoegang en bellen zal aanbieden. Voor een bedrag van 145 gulden per maand (inclusief ISDN abo) kan iedereen in Nederland met een ISDN lijntje via de carrierselectcode 1630 het Wish-netwerk betreden waarna er geen tikken meer worden berekend. Jacob Pieterman van Wish belooft een verbinding van hoge kwaliteit waarmee het zelfs mogelijk is om beeldvullend videobeelden te bekijken:

Wish ziet voorlopig geen toekomst in ADSL. Wish-directeur Jacob Pieterman belooft verbindingen van hoge kwaliteit. "Met nieuwe compressietechnieken kan over 128 kbps schermvullend video worden gekeken", zegt Pieterman in gesprek met WebWereld.

"Vanaf 1 mei kunnen we ISDN-diensten aanbieden in heel Nederland", aldus de Wish-directeur. De aansluiting op het telefoonnet wordt in eerste instantie nog verzorgd door KPN Telecom. Bij Sharky Extreme is al een preview gepost van het Abit KA7 KX133 moederbord dat binnenkort gereleased zal worden. Het ziet er naar uit dat de KA7 vanwege haar uitgebreide mogelijkheden tot overklokken, 4 DIMM sloten, de afwezigheid van een AMR slot en ATA-100 ondersteuning (KA7 100) een errug populair Athlon plankie zal gaan worden :

Geruchten waren er al, maar nu dan inderdaad definitief.

Abit komt uit met de KA7. Geen AMR, 6 PCI sloten en... 6 databuffers, die zoals ik al vermoedde na eerdere berichtgevingen, bedoeld zijn om een 4e dimm slot te stabiliseren.

Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. March 24th 2000 - Unveiling a whole new level of quality and sophistication for the Athlon platform, ABIT has released their long awaited Slot A board, the KA7. This board is designed to support AMD-K7 Athlon Slot A 200MHz FSB Processors using the VIA VT8371(KX133) /VIA 686A chipset. It also supports all normal industry standard functions for motherboards such as Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface (ACPI). AGP 2X/4X and 100/133MHz SDRAM Memory Bus Settings. The KA7 uses four 168-pin DIMM sockets supporting PC100/PC133 SDRAM modules up to 2 Gigabytes MAX. (8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512MB SDRAM). In addition ABIT has added a new level of stability and performance with their famous 6 chip Data Buffer Set with ECCsupport.

6 Chip Data Buffer

With systems now at the 133MHz external clock speed, the circuitry design is crucial, especially concerning the SDRAM. Signal bandwidth and length need to be adjusted accordingly. One slight mistake could cause an error, so a high speed data buffer chipset called the Data Switch was developed to guarantee the proper RAM stability at 100MHz and 133MHz when using 4 DIMMs.

The chips act as buffers to increase the stability and data integrity when using all 4 DIMM slots. It is recommended highly to prevent system crashes when using 8 banks of memory. Since this data buffer is not required, but only recommended you will not find it on most of other motherboards with 4 DIMM slots.

ABIT has included the data buffer with the KA7 for an added level of stability and performance. "When it comes to system crashes we don't think you should gamble and reliability is our primary concern at ABIT." Says ABIT's Eric Boeing.

SoftMenu^TM III

While you might find some of the features you want in some Athlon boards, only ABIT has Soft Menu^TM, and now only to be found on the new KA7, there is the newly designed SoftMenu^TM III for the Athlon platform. The KA7 s SoftMenu^TM III has some special added features and functions that will allow the maximum performance and enhancement tweaks specifically for Athlon based CPUs, like FSB settings from 100MHz to 183MHz in increments of 1, (84 settings). In addition to SoftMenu_TM Technology the System BIOS features and supports Award Plug and Play BIOS, Write-Protect Anti-Virus function by AWARD BIOS and is of course Year 2000 Compliant.

Multi I/O Functions

The KA7 has on board Bus Master IDE Ports supporting UDMA 33/66 as well as 6 PCI slots and 1 ISA slot for maximum upgradability, most other boards only have 5 PCI, but ABIT has added an extra PCI slot making the KA7 the most expandable and upgradeable board in its class. In addition to the normal serial and parallel ports the KA7 has 2 USB ports PLUS an extra header for 2 extra USB channels.

insane schrijft dat er bij ZDNET een artikeltje staat waarin Rambus geheugen wordt vergeleken met DDR-RAM. De conclusie is dat beide soorten Ram snel zijn maar dat de prijs van een Rimmetje gewoon te hoog is, iets wat wij natuurlijk al lang weten.

AMD is on the other side of the trench, occupied by DDR. Like Rambus, DDR doubles system memory bandwidth, thus increasing overall PC performance. Both memory technologies were developed to allow PC systems to keep up with the rapid increase in desktop PC processor clock speeds.

There will actually be two flavors of DDR to start. The first, PC 1600, will offer a bandwidth of 1.6GB per second, or twice as much as today's standard 100MHz SDRAM memory. The second kind, PC 2100, delivers 2.6GB per second of peak bandwidth. Rambus delivers 1.6GB of peak bandwidth, while the current peak bandwidth of SDRAM is 800MB per second.

"DDR, fundamentally, is a two-times improvement over SDRAM at the same clock speed," said Mark Kellogg, a senior member of the staff at IBM Microelectronics in Burlington, Vt.

Bij Sharky Extreme hebben ze een review van de Playstation II on-line gezet. Ze hebben ook nog wat screenshots gemaakt (echte screenshots, niet gemaakts met een camera) waarvan je eentje hier beneden ziet staan, waarin heel erg duidelijk is hoe nodig FSAA voor de low-res console is.

Yes, we like to start with desert. The PS2's design is centered around the Toshiba-produced 128-bit Emotion Engine. Running at 294.912 MHz, the Emotion Engine gives the power to create complex 3D scenes. Sony is claiming the CPU can do 6.2 GFLOPS, and we've heard it said that the Emotion Engine is capable of drawing up to 66 million polygons per second. However, we've also heard much lower real world numbers in the area of ten million, after lighting, shading, and other details of normal images are rendered. Either way, the numbers are impressive.

[...] It isn't all good though. After having seen 3dfx' full-scene anti-aliasing on their Voodoo 5 boards, the PlayStation2 clearly could die for some AA. In fact, at times, the jaggies, buzzing and pixel popping really did get annoyingly noticeable (Ridge Radcer V for example). The lack of AA is the same short-coming that most consoles suffer from and detracts from otherwise beautifully clean 3D graphics.

Rambuc Inc. heeft de ITC (US International Trade Commission) gevraagd tot onderzoek naar de schending van Rambus patenten door Sega en Hitachi. Volgens Rambus is de clock timing in de SDRAM chips van Hitachi gebaseerd op door Rambus gepatenteerde technologie. Op zich zou Rambus hiervoor de complete geheugenindustrie voor het gerecht kunnen dagen, ware het niet dat dit hele verhaaltje een ordinaire actie tegen de Dreamcast lijkt te zijn. Hitachi is heel toevallig fabrikant van de Dreamcast CPU en de Dreamcast is op zijn beurt een concurrent van de Playstation II, waar - als één van de weinige apparaten op deze aardkloot - Rambus chips in verwerkt worden:

The ITC suit specifically identifies the Hitachi SH microprocessor family and SDRAM and double-data-rate (DDR) SDRAM memory. The Sega Dreamcast game console uses Hitachi's SH processors.

Rambus asked the ITC to uphold its patents and bar all imports of the Hitachi processors and DRAMs, as well as Sega game players using the Hitachi chips.

And the same may be true of the company's inclusion of Sega in its patent suit, according to observers, given that so many OEMs use Hitachi's SH chips.

EBN Online meldt dat AMD vandaag de prijzen van de 950, 900 en 850MHz Athlon met 100 dollar omlaag hakt:

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD said today it will lower prices by $100, or about 10%, on each of its 950-, 900-, and 850-MHz Athlon speed grades. OEMs and end users will not receive a price break on the 1-GHz Athlon, introduced March 6 for $1,299 in 1,000-unit lots.

According to the company, the 950-MHz Athlon will be priced at $899, while the 900-MHz chip will cost OEMs $799. The price of an 850-MHz Athlon was also cut to $749.

AMD will leave the prices for its other Athlon products unchanged. The company's 800- and 750-MHz Athlon prices are $599 and $489, respectively, while the midrange 700- and 650-MHz Athlons cost $389 and $299. The low-end 600-MHz Athlon is priced at $229.

Micron heeft gisteren de financiële cijfers van het eerste kwartaal bekend gemaakt. Er werd een winst van $161 miljoen geboekt, 'teleurstellende' cijfers die volgens Micron te wijten waren aan de dip in de geheugenprijzen van vorige maand. Verder verwacht Micron dat het dit jaar meer DDR dan Rambus zal produceren:

Michael Sadler, Micron vice president of sales, predicted that global DRAM demand this year would continue to grow at the traditional 80% to 100% bit-growth rate.

Sadler estimated that Micron's production mix will be about 50% for PC133 SDRAMs, 10% to 15% for double-data-rate SDRAMs, and 5% to 10% for Direct Rambus. The rest will be spent on making PC100 and EDO DRAM devices.

Wired News meldt dat de nieuwe eigenaars van Amiga op 1 april (klinkt al veelbelovend ) een developer versie van het nieuwe Amiga platform presenteren. Amiga werd vorig jaar door Gateway verkocht, nadat het eerder twee keer failliet was gegaan onder Commodore en Escom. Wederom lijkt Amiga vastberaden te zijn om met een revolutionaire home computer op de markt te komen, nu nog hopen dat dit ook daadwerkelijk gaat gebeuren:

On April 1, at Amiga 2000, a developer's show in St. Louis, Amiga's new owners will unveil a new developers' machine, according to company officials, who acquired the platform rights from Gateway last year.

[...] As well as new hardware, the St. Louis show also promises a first peek at the new Amiga OS. It is expected to be based on the Tao Group's Elate operating system, a cross-platform, multimedia OS that runs on a wide variety of low-end hardware, according to sources.

However, Amiga officials would not comment on details about the new operating system.

"Since the demise of the Amiga under Commodore, I've counted 24 different product announcements that never happened," said McEwen, Amiga's CEO. "There were seven in the last two years when Amiga was owned by Gateway. I'm not going to put people through that again. I don't want to make any product announcements until it's signed, sealed, and delivered, and someone can see it, touch it, feel it, and buy it."

Pricing will be comparable to 2 Meg x 32 SDRAMs. Both parts are expected to be available in production volumes in the second calendar quarter of 2000, and 4 Meg x 16 DDR SDRAM devices will be available in the third calendar quarter.
