The Register heeft het één en ander aan nieuws bij elkaar weten te schrapen over de plannen van AMD voor 24 april aanstaande. Op die datum wordt Celeron-concurrent Spitfire gereleased en worden en passant de prijzen van de K6-2 en de Athlon flink omlaag gehakt. De Athlon 600 wordt richting processor-bejaardenhuis gestuurd:

A reseller of AMD products has revealed information about aggressive pricing changes the firm will make on the 24th of April next, and has also included details of Spitfire pricing the firm will announce on the same date.
A Spitfire 550MHz will cost $79, a 600MHz $99, a 650MHz $140, and a 700MHz $175. On the same date, the K6-2 will cost $50, and while there will be changes to the 533MHz and 550MHz K6-2s, no details of those have yet been disclosed.
Athlon prices, as we have reported here in the past, will be aggressively pitched against Intel's offerings. The 1GHz will drop to $1071, the 950MHz will cost $722, the 900MHz will cost $589, the 850MHz will cost $429, the 800MHz will cost $323, the 750MHz will cost $242, the 700MHz will cost $187, the 650MHz will cost $163, and the 600MHz Athlon will also cost $163 as it is shuffled out of the equation.
At the end of this year, there will be new multimedia extensions called SIMB, which will handle double precision FP numbers, and beat the current floating point scores. AMD is working closely with Microsoft to produce compliant OS and application software for the 64-bit Sledgehammer platform, when it arrives.

DiGiSTORM verwees ons naar AMD Zone, alwaar een hele berg kort AMD-nieuws te vinden is. Hierbij de meest opvallende zaken:

- K6-2+ for desktop is DEAD. They will not be releasing this chip after all. [break]Was te verwachten. AMD heeft meer dan genoeg low-end Athlons voor de desktop markt zodat een nieuwe K6-2 niet nodig is.[/break] Spitfire will be out in April… it will come out in 550, 600, 650, 700 versions. Motherboards will be another story. [break]Niet toevallig plant Intel ook rond die tijd met de nieuwe Coppermine-Celeron te komen (ongetwijfeld voor zien van de originele naam Celeron II of zoiets)[/break] Talk about the current PCI bus being killed off. AMD will introduce a new I/O Bus called LDT (Lightning Data Transport). The name will likely change when it gets released. Current PCI buses transfers 133 MB/ sec, while the i810 bus moves 266 MB /sec. LDT will move 1.6 GB/sec. Sweet.

Insane wees ons op een nieuwsbericht van The Register waarin wordt gemeld dat Intel van plan is 40 miljoen dollar te steken in een fabriek die connectors maakt voor RIMM-modules (het beruchte Rambus-geheugen). Op zich is het niet vreemd dat Intel geld steekt in andere bedrijven (dat is in het verleden wel vaker voorgekomen) maar het leek er op dat Intel nu ook inzag dat Rambus het niet gaat worden (5 x zo duur en 7% sneller als gewoon SDRam...)
De investering bewijst echter dat Intel de hoop in Rambus nog niet heeft opgegeven en voor de nabije toekomst verzekerd wil zijn van voldoende RIMM's.

Het kan echter ook zo zijn dat Intel meerdere ijzers in het vuur wil hebben. Aan de ene kant "gokken" op Rambus en aan de andere kant op DDR-Ram.

Local Taiwanese sources said yesterday that chip firm Intel is set to take a $40 million share in a firm that makes connectors for Rambus inline memory modules (RIMMs).

The reports suggest the money will be the first investment Intel has made in a components company. In the last 18 months, the Capital division of the Santa Clara firm has plunged billions of dollars into buying and investing in Internet infrastructure firms.

Hon Hai Precision Industries signed a deal with Rambus Ink last June to provide connectors for RIMMs, as well as other components of the complex package, including the expensive heat spreading components.

De mannen van 3DHardware hebben een review geschreven van de AOpen 952E 52X IDE CD-ROM speler. De reviewer kwam tot de conclusie dat je voor het geld een zeer snelle en redelijke stille drive in huis haalt:

The test results are a bit debatable, for instance the estimated track speed is well above the speed of the fastest existing hard disk drives, and is in other words simply incorrect. Anyway, the 33X Sandra detected as the average speed of the drive show that the drive is very potent, with low average access times.

If you’re wondering to what this translates in real life, I can tell you that the 952E won’t disappoint you, no matter what you like to use your CD-ROM drive for. As we all know, these very high speed drives aren’t really essential, even if you’re playing games that use CD-ROMs. Most of them copy all the game data to the hard disk to reduce access times, so the only occasions when you’re really going to utilize the speed will be during installations (the Windows 98 installation should run around 3X faster on this drive than on a 10X drive), when the drive is doing something called a sequential read. Then again, it’s also that much less annoying to browse CD-ROMs with this drive, as it reacts almost as fast as an old hard disk.

GameSpot kreeg ook een demo'tje te zien van 3dfx waarin ze trots de FSAA en T-Buffer kunstjes lieten zien van de Voodoo5-5000 AGP, met twee VSA-100 chips en 64MB aan geheugen. In het artikel wordt overigens ook gemeld dat dit model in april voor 299 dollar in de verkoop zal gaan:

3dfx wrapped up its visit with a quick look at Quake III Arena running with motion blur. The version used was Q3T 1.08 at a resolution of 640x480. The effect demonstrated wasn't so much to show off what can be done with motion blurring on an artistic level, but rather just to show off that it can be done at all. If developers put some effort into the VSA-100's T-Buffer cinematic effects, the visual impact of games can improve with little performance penalty. 3dfx is expecting to ship VSA-100-equipped Voodoo4 4500s, PCI Voodoo5 5000s, and AGP Voodoo5 5500s in April, and it will start a preorder program in the coming weeks. The Voodoo5 5500 we saw yesterday will retail for US$299. Later this summer, 3dfx will introduce the 128MB Voodoo5 6000 AGP, which will run off of four VSA-100 chips.

insane schrijft dat GamePC een korte review online heeft gepetst van de P3-750E FC-PGA processor, die nog fijn op je BX mobo past. Tweakers kunnen beter voor de P3-500E gaan, deze kan zoals bekend na wat overclocking makkelijk dezelde snelheid halen:

As you can see, the 750E FC-PGA is no slouch in the performance department, but can still be bested by an overclocked 500E chip (thanks to the higher FSB speed and AGP clock). Basically, the chip perfomed exactly as it should, at default clock speeds it was about 30% faster than the 500E chip. This is best represented by the Software rendering Quake II scores above, since the graphics card has nothing to do with this test, pure CPU crunching power, all the way though. Gotta love it.

Everytime we take another FC-PGA chip for a test drive, we like them more than the last time. It still ceases to amaze me that so much processing power can fit on one little tiny blue core, and just about everyone who's seen these tiny little chips in person says the same. But alas, Intel's days of being the only chip company with full-speed on-die cache are numbered, as AMD's Thunderbird chips are nearing completion with each coming day, and if they can deliver everything the Athlon has now, with on-die cache, than Intel will have to up the ante again to stay on top of the speed game. Now if someone figured out a way to truly allow for multi-processing with Dual FC-PGA's, we'd be in business.

Of more interest to OEMs are reports from sources that the next-generation 64-bit McKinley and upcoming 32-bit Willamette and Foster processors will use a new FC-PBGA package with a revolutionary form of heat dissipation, more substrate layers, a new epoxy material, and new technology to form the substrate's vias. The new package will also use sockets on the motherboard, as Intel moves away from Slot 1 board attachment.

Sources said Intel will use a new heat-dissipation material for the next-generation packages, a substance derived from technology developed for the NASA space program.

One packaging-industry executive, who asked not to be named, said Intel has made minority investments in several small-materials companies, which have adapted the NASA heat-dissipation technology for semiconductors. The precise heat-dissipating material wasn't known.

In het artikel wordt verder geschreven dat de Itanium processor vervaardigd zal worden in een multichip-module package. Dit wil zeggen dat verschillende onderdelen van de chip los van elkaar in de processor module verpakt worden. De mensen van de tech zone hebben een comparison on-line gezet tussen de Global Win CBF32, Global Win CFA12 en The Card Cooler. De conclusie is dat alle coolers goed zijn en ongeveer evengoed koelen maar dat de Global Win CFA12 toch wat minder herrie maakt en daarom aantrekkelijker is om te kopen.

The performance of all the card coolers were very close, with the big CFA12 coming out on top. What was interesting was how close the Global Win CBF32 performance was to The Card Cooler.

The CBF32 managed to get a better score than The Card Cooler. This has more to do with the adjustable mounting rail than anything else. The Sunon fans used by The Card Cooler has a combined higher CFM rating than the two YS Tech fans used by the CBF32. However, because the Global Win CBF32 was able to adjust its fans so it blows air more evenly across the video card, it scored slightly better.

The loudest cooler in this roundup was the Global Win CBF32. Those YS Tech fans spin at much higher RPM than the other cooler fans. If noise is a consideration, then you may want to take look at the other coolers. The noise level of The Card Cooler and Global Win CFA12 were very acceptable. When the case cover was put back on, you can't hear them anymore. You hear a slight hum with the Global Win CBF32.
