WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Microsoft formally presented its best and final offer to settle an antitrust case as a federal judge prepared to rule against software giant as early as Tuesday, published reports said Friday.
Microsoft presented its settlement proposal to government lawyers Friday afternoon, the Associated Press reported. Lawyers for the company and the government were prepared to meet in Chicago with the mediator in the settlement talks, Appeals Court Judge Richard Posner.
[...]Both sides have strong incentives to settle. The harsh tone of the findings of fact make it a virtual certainty that Judge Jackson will determine that Microsoft violated antitrust laws. The ruling would provide ammunition to companies and individuals pursuing private antitrust suits against the software giant.
