The new Amiga developer system will consist of an AMD 500Mhz K6-2 with 64megs of RAM and a GeForce 256 from nVidia. The idea was to make it cheap and yet powerful enough to get the job done. At this point in time the GeForce 256 is the fastest mainstream PC graphics card on sale. It offers a GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) which takes the load of the CPU, much like the original Amiga chipsets. The OS will be hosted on top of (Red Hat) Linux to start with to show that the OS can run fast even when hosted. Also, the idea of try before you buy works well with hosting.
[...]New OS
The new GUI designed by Trond Werner Hansen (The maker of Birdie) will be able to change its look easily. "The interface system is abstracted - it provides an architecture on which multiple interface models can be added. Our first one will be something very different, but ppl can create anything they like." -Fleecy. Although by default it will not look like the old Amiga GUI, it could easily be made to.
The entire OS could be as small as 3megs including the GUI and Java. The kernel itself which will be supplied by Tao can be as small as 25k.
