Cor tipte me richting ZDNet alwaar een leuk artikel staat over de nieuwe gamers opleiding die de Universiteit van Californië dit najaar zal starten. Helaas is het niet de hele dag domweg Quake of Unreal Tournament over het netwerk spelen, maar krijg je ook les in bijvoorbeeld psychologie en grafische vormgeving.

"Your homework is to play Quake and then write about it."

It sounds like an adolescent boy's dream come true, but this is no dream. Next fall, students at the University of California at Irvine can begin taking courses in the university's newly announced Interdisciplinary Gaming Studies Program. It's the first step toward a "major" in gaming.

"Given the amount of money in the gaming industry, you don't really have the flexibility to take risks and do alternative stuff, to experiment more," said Robert Nideffer, an assistant professor at UC Irvine who heads the gaming program. "I think the university is about providing that kind of space."

The program incorporates courses in a variety of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, graphic design and human kinetics. The goal is to create students who are not only able to code and design games but also have an understanding of the societal impact and significance of this $7 billion industry.

EETimes schrijft dat Compaq ten behoeve van Frans atoomonderzoek een supercomputer bouwt met 2000 1,25GHz Alpha's of 2500 1GHz Alpha's. Het systeem moet eind 2001 gereed zijn en zal in staat zijn om 5.000.000.000.000 berekeningen per seconde uit te voeren:

The French Atomic Energy Commission has placed an order for a supercomputer to simulate and analyze nuclear explosions. The computer must be able to perform up to five trillion operations per second. Jesse Lipcon, vice president of the company's Alpha Technology group based in Marlborough, Mass., said the order demonstrates that the Alpha architecture is one of the best designs for the ultrahigh-performance segment. Compaq plans to deliver the system by the end of 2001.

The supercomputer will use about 2,000 Alpha chips running in the 1.25-GHz range, or about 2,500 chips at the 1-GHz level. It will be based on the current EV6 generation and will utilize 0.18-micron-level chips. The EV6 line began life at the 0.35-micron node and has been shipping for two years.

Computable brengt het blije bericht dat de afgelopen CeBIT de beste beurs was uit het bestaan van dit evenement. Volgens de organisatie werd de CeBIT dit jaar geflood met 750.000 bezoekers, 50K boven het vorige record. WAP en elektronisch zakendoen speelden dit jaar een hoofdrol:

Vooral de diensten die voor WAP geschapen worden, trokken buitengewoon veel belangstelling. De mobiele telefoons verdrongen de computers als publiekstrekkers. Verder was Microsoft er natuurlijk met Windows 2000. Voor het eerst was er een aparte sector geheel gewijd aan Linux. De volgende Cebit vindt plaats in de lente van 2001, van 22 tot 28 maart.

The Register wist meer details over de 1GHz Athlon van het net te rapen, die volgens informatie van de duitse site Tec Channel nog steeds met aluminium-interconnect technologie in Austin geproduceerd zal worden. Als AMD met de gangbare aluminium technologie al vrij eenvoudig 1000MHz haalt, dan wekt dat hoge verwachting voor de kloksnelheden die binnenkort met koper-interconnects in Dresden behaald kunnen worden:

Although our understanding now, thanks to our colleagues at Tec Channel who followed up our story, is that the 1GHz microprocessors will use aluminium interconnects and be fabbed at AMD's Austin plant, we had heard as early as October last year that the company was happy with its execution and, even then, could deliver 1GHz technology.

This is in German but gives further AMD confirmation of the fact. One OEM will ship GHz PCs in March. Although not giving the name, he pointed out that Compaq and Gateway showed near-mass-production-units at CeBIT at AMDs booth with 1 GHz. They were then still labeled "technical demonstrations", according to Tec Channel.

Anand brengt ons een review van de Soyo SY-K7AIA Slot-A moederplank, gebaseerd op AMD's good ol' Irongate chipset. Helaas is Soyo er een beetje laat bij met haar Athlon bordje en is het waarschijnlijk beter om even te wachten op een goed KX133 mobo.

The biggest issue we had with the K7AIA was that it is based on a chipset that is being phased out and replaced by a more up to date solution, VIA's KX133. While the AGP 4X support of the KX133 doesn't offer a huge performance improvement over the AGP 2X limitation of the AMD 750 chipset, the PC133 memory support of the KX133 can definitely come in handy, especially in professional level applications that are very memory bandwidth dependent.

If you can get past the fact that the K7AIA is using the AMD 750 chipset, then comes the fact that Soyo didn't even bother to use the VIA 686A South Bridge which integrates quite a few functions such as hardware monitoring into the chip itself while doubling as an I/O controller. The highly integrated 686A, which is compatible with the AMD 751 as a North Bridge, does help to lower the overall cost of the motherboard. Soyo was very intent on sticking to the Fester design and it shows.

The lack of any overclocking/voltage tweaking options is somewhat of a letdown, but with the current state of overclocking in the Athlon market essentially being that if you want to overclock you should buy an overclocking card, this downside can be overlooked as not an extremely important factor.

Koen Crijns heeft het eerste deel van zijn (erg informatief) artikel over de werking van 3D kaarten op z'n site gemieterd. Computer!Totaal fans zullen dit stuk waarschijnlijk al eens gelezen hebben in het februari nummer van dit jaar. Hieronder vast een gedeelte:

Nu we de zes stappen kort bekeken hebben, is het leuk om te zien welke componenten van de PC nu precies welke taken binnen het 3D rendering proces uitvoeren.Vroeger, toen er nog 3D videokaarten waren, was het uiteraard heel makkelijk. De CPU werd gebruikt voor ALLE 3D berekeningen en het enige dat de videokaart hoefde te doen is de uiteindelijk berekende beelden te tonen op het scherm. Aangezien een CPU verre van geoptimaliseerd is voor dit soort 3D berekeningen, was dit systeem natuurlijk verre van optimaal. Iedereen kan zich spellen als Doom I en Doom II nog wel herinneren: revolutionair in die tijd, maar oer-lelijk in vergelijking met de latere "echte" 3D games.

In 1996 kwamen de eerste videokaarten met enige 3D functionaliteit. Chips als de bekende "S3 Virge" hadden op de chip zelf al functionaliteit om binnen het pixel rendering proces (stap 6) enige hulp te bieden. Toch kon je pas echt van "3D kaart" spreken bij de introductie van de eerste Voodoo chipset van 3dfx. Deze kaart had namelijk zowel een hardwarematige Triangle Setup engine als een hardware Pixel Rendering engine. Iedereen kent het resultaat: ineens konden 3D graphics veel sneller verwerkt worden (de 3D chip is namelijk geoptimaliseerd voor 3D berekeningen, een CPU duidelijk niet) en er waren dus veel mooiere real-time 3D graphics mogelijk.

Pas sinds kort is er een nieuwe toevoeging aan de taken van de 3D chip gekomen. Bij nieuwe chips als de nVidia GeForce 256 en de S3 Savage 2000 zijn ook de stappen 3 (Transformation) en 4 (Lightning) op de 3D chip terecht gekomen.

The Register schrijft dat de geheugen prijzen in de afgelopen week een stijging van 30% hebben gemaakt, volgens The Register omdat distributeurs bewust aansturen op een situatie waarbij het aanbod van geheugenchips overtroffen wordt door de vraag:

There are many rumours circulating in the industry for the reasons behind the price hikes - some no doubt started by distributors keen to cash in on the rise.

There doesn't appear to be a chip shortage - manufacturers are still able to meet demand. But demand is starting to catch up with supply. And some distributors' stocks do appear to be low, which has prompted fears that manufacturers and OEMs are ramping up prices to compensate for selling below cost in recent months.

There are also reports from Asia of a printed circuit board shortage, which is causing problems for the assembly houses.

Webwereld meldt dat Superweb in onderhandeling is met Verstatel en Interoute over de levering van netwerkcapaciteit. Superweb zegt bezig te zijn met een 'inhaalslag op kwaliteitsgebied' en wil voor de toelevering van inbelcapaciteit niet langer afhankelijk zijn van één leverancier. Momenteel kan 1 op de 18 abonnees tegerlijkertijd verbonden zijn. Volgende week moet dit opgeschroefd zijn naar 1 op de 15 (thanks vsmb@superweb.nl" rel="external">ovs voor de tip):

Inbelcapaciteit is van levensbelang voor Superweb, na 1 april is het de dood of de gladiolen. De Jager: "We willen niet afhankelijk zijn van één telecombedrijf. Onderhandelingen met Versatel zijn in een vergevorderd stadium, daarnaast praten we met Interoute."

Versatel is een logische partner. Investeringsbedrijf Nesbic heeft naast een belang in Superweb ook aandelen Versatel. Op het 0800 forum van NielsOnline.nl wordt overigens hard geklaagd over de laatste actie van Superweb, nl het dichtgooien van alle poorten buiten standaard HTTP, FTP, mail en ICQ etc. Online gamen is hierdoor nauwelijks meer mogelijk.

The Register schrijft dat AMD naast o.a. Intel en IBM het vierde bedrijf wordt dat Alpha processors gaat bakken voor Compaq. De locatie waar de produktie plaats gaat vinden (Austin of Dresden) wordt niet genoemd, maar voor AMD zou dit bijvoorbeeld een geschikte manier kunnen zijn om ongebruikte fabspace in Dresden te benutten:

That fourth non-Intel firm is AMD, we now learn. According to a source which has Jerry Sanders' ear: "AMD is dreaming of a day when a box rolls off its lines and the last thing you decide is whether you want it to be an Alpha or an Athlon.

"They're already using Alpha's bus architecture (responsible for a fair portion of their performance lead over Intel's x86) and the only real sticking point in the deal now is memory: A 128 Mb memory module for an Alpha runs at $1,500.

Webwereld meldt dat de actie van World Online waarbij abonnees voorrang krijgen bij de komende beursgang van het bedrijf in korte tijd 30.000 tot 40.000 nieuwe leden opgeleverd:

Maximaal kan de aanstaande beursgang World Online 7,3 miljard gulden opleveren. Dat zou het hoogste bedrag zijn ooit dat een Nederlands bedrijf bij beursgang binnenhaalde. De marktwaarde van het internetbedrijf zal na notering bij een prijs per aandeel van 39 euro ruim 24 miljard gulden bedragen. 3dfx heeft de niet zo blije financiële resultaten van het boekjaar 1999 bekend gemaakt. Op een omzet van 360,523 miljoen dollar werd een verlies geleden van $63.287.000, omgerekend $2,81 per aandeel:

For the full year, revenues were $360,523,000, compared to $202,601,000 in the year ended December 31, 1998. The increase in revenues was attributed primarily to the sale of board level products as compared to chip only sales in the previous year. The net loss for the year was ($63,287,000), which compares to net income of $21,703,000 in the comparable 12-month period. The FY 2000 results include restructuring costs of $4,382,000 and a non cash write-down of in-process research and development, and the non-cash amortization of goodwill and intangibles of $14,530,000. None of these costs, totaling $18,912,000, were reflected in the financial results of the prior year.

On a per share basis, the net loss in fiscal year 2000 was ($2.81), computed on the basis of 22,536,000 shares outstanding. This compares to basic earnings per share of $1.45, computed on the basis of 14,917,000 shares outstanding, or on a fully diluted basis $1.33 per share, computed on the basis of 16,353,000 in the 12-month period ended December 31, 1998.

Volgens EBN Online zal de 1GHz Pentium III op 8 maart formeel door Intel gelanceerd worden. Systemen met de processor zullen door Hewlett-Packard, Dell en IBM in beperkt verkrijgbare 'special editions' verkocht worden:

Intel Corp. will formally launch its 1-GHz Pentium III microprocessor March 8, according to OEM sources.

The launch, to be backed by Dell Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., and IBM Corp., will almost certainly come in the form of limited-production "special editions," according to sources briefed by Intel. PCs using the chips will feature specially designed motherboards with larger heat sinks to accommodate the faster processors.

Volume produktie van de 1GHz chips staat nog steeds gepland voor het derde kwartaal. Van AMD wordt verwacht dat het ook deze maand met een 1 GHz Athlon op de markt komt. Het wordt nog interessant om te zien in hoeverre AMD kan meeliften op de 1GHz hype die Intel komende tijd ongetwijfeld op zal kweken. Van AMD wordt immers verwacht dat het dankzij hogere yields makkelijker kan leveren.

JC kreegt een aantal AMD geruchten toegestuurd van een tipgever die zegt dat hij de scoop kreeg op een door AMD gesponsord zakendinner in Dallas. In hoeverre onderstaande informatie klopt is niet duidelijk, maar er zitten in ieder geval interessante stukjes tussen. Volgens de tipgever krijgt de Thunderbird 512KB cache en is deze daarmee 27,5% sneller dan de huidige Athlon:

De Rambus aandelen hebben, na een koersexplosie op woensdag, de afgelopen dagen een daling gemaakt van ongeveer 20%. Naast Rambus Inc. gingen bijna alle hardware fondsen in de Nasdaq onderuit:

Rambus (RMBS: news, msgs) led most chip stocks lower as the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX: news, msgs) slid 3.1 percent. Rambus shares were trimmed by 36 3/4, to 258 1/4. Micron Technology (MU: news, msgs) was off 3 1/2 to 98 1/4, giving back the stock's big move Wednesday, following raised price targets. Intel (INTC: news, msgs) pulled back to 115 3/4, after hitting an intraday high of 117 1/16.

EETimes schrijft dat Micron Technology heeft aangekondigd dat de helft van haar DRAM produktie tegen het eind van dit jaar zal zijn overgeschakeld op 0,15 micron. Momenteel produceert Micron bijna volledig op 0,18 micron. Bij een lagere die-size kunnen er meer chips op een wafer gebakken worden en dat betekent weer lagere produktiekosten:

Virtually all of Micron's capacity has moved to 0.18-micron, and about 5 percent of its worldwide wafer starts have already been converted to 0.15-micron, beginning in its Boise, Idaho, fabs, said David Parker, manager of investor relations. "We expect about 20 to 30 percent of our starts to be at 0.15 by the summertime," reaching the 50 percent figure by about year-end, he said. Tabrizi said he expects the 64M-bit to settle into a $6 to $7 range as demand begins to outrun supply. "I personally expect there to be a shortage in the second half of 2000 of 5 percent," with an imbalance of 8 percent in 2001, and 10 to 12 percent in 2002, he said.

Micron en Huyndai verwachten dat Rambus in de tweede helft van dit jaar niet boven een marktaandeel van 5 tot 10% uit zal komen.

De geruchtenmolen rond de nVidia NV15 begint nu eindelijk flink op gang te komen. Volgens The Register krijgt de NV15 een kloksnelheid van slechts 135MHz, lager dan de 160MHz die eerder werd aangenomen. De NV15 zou met deze kloksnelheid een pixel fillrate van 540MPix/s krijgen en een texel fillrate van 980MTex/s, duidelijk lager dan de Voodoo5 6000:

Here are the NV15's key features. It will have a 135MHz 3D core, 333MHz memory clock (obviously DDR), transfom and lighting set-up and rendering, a 256-bit rendering engine, a 540 million pixels per secound fill rate, and support up to 128MB RAM. In addition to T&L, the NV15 will offer a new feature called clipping.

It will have two texture per pixel, four pixels pre-clock, memory flexibility, 128-bit SDR/DDR, 64-bit SDR/DDR, 96/48MB support (dissimilar memory sizes), an integrated single-link TMDS transmitter, support up to 1600x1200 panels. Cards based on the NV15 will use a VIP 2.0 port, the palette will have DAC/w Video overly and a digital interface for HDTV encoding.

Anderhalf jaar geleden werden de specs van de TNT op het laatste moment bijgesteld van 125 naar 90MHz omdat de nVidia's chipbakker destijds niet klaar was voor produktie op 0,25 micron. Uiteraard wil dit nog niet zeggen dat nVidia nu ook 'schuldig' is aan hype-vorming, aangezien we niet weten wie de geruchten in de wereld heeft geholpen dat de NV15 op 160MHz loopt. The Register zegt in ieder geval dat bovenstaande specs 'true' zijn (en dat zeggen ze niet vaak over hun eigen nieuwsberichten ).
