Gaming Age schrijft dat het van betrouwbare bronnen heeft gehoord dat Sony 2 miljoen PS2's klaar heeft staan om in de behoefte te voorzien van de Japanse markt (de PS2 werd daar vandaag gelanceerd). Eerder schreef EETimes dat analisten twijfelen aan de doelstelling van Sony om tijdens het introductieweekend in Japan 1 miljoen units te leveren. Door assemblage problemen zou deze claim mogelijk niet gehaald kunnen worden:

From sources, we've learned that a total of one million units will be in distribution on the first day. Immediately following will be another million units on the second day. That's a total of two million units during the launch weekend. Out of that one million on the first day, 600,000 would be dedicated to online purchases, and 400,000 for retail outlets. This is interesting considering at one point Sony had only dedicated 250,000 units for online sales, but it was clear that the demand could not be met.

Sources come from one of the IC manufacturing factories as well as a source within SofMap, a major Japanese software retailer. The source within the IC manufacturing factory had indicated a total of six million integrated circuits had been produced as of January 2000. If you consder the Emotion Engine, Graphic Synthesizer, and the I/O chip as the three integrated circuit components, that equals two million chipsets. This also coincides with Mr. Kiyoshi Yamakawa's, Sony's corporate advisor, statement that the company hopes to sell two million units in the first two days, as was reported back in early February.

Tech Report deed onderzoek naar de prijs van een 500Mhz PowerMac G4 en een vergelijkbare PC (Tech Report koos voor een Athlon 650). De conclusie van het verhaaltje is dat de PC ($1.753) bijna de helft goedkoper is als de G4-500 ($3,378):

There you have it. As of right now, a reasonably well-equipped Mac costs roughly twice what a comparable PC does. Any way you cut it, that's just not right. This is what happens when you have a monopolistic computer manufacturer trying to compete versus a dynamic, commodity-driven PC market. It ain't pretty.

Thing of it is, I'm probably about to get an earful from the MacZealots out there for pointing out this fact. The way I see it, their rage would be better directed at the company that's charging them double the market price for largely commodity-based computer systems. But then I'm just a PC bigot.

The Heatsink Guide meldt dat Alpha pics heeft gepost van hun twee nieuwe FC-PGA heatsinks, de FC-PAL35U en PEP66U:

The FC-PAL35U is simply an FCPGA-compatible version of the PAL6035. The FC-PAL35U is the heatsink on the right side, on the left, you can see a PAL6035 for comparison: [break][/break] The PEP66U is an entirely new model; it uses a design similar to the P3125/P7125 heatsink series: Very long fins, and a fan that's mounted on the side. This unit looks very impressive, and could very well be the most efficient socket heatsink available! However, I suppose that due to the fan being mounted on the side there might be space problems with some motherboards.

News.com meldt dat AMD de K6-III zal laten sterven. De mobile versie van de processor zal nog enige tijd leverbaar zijn, maar zal uiteindelijk worden afgelost door de K6-III+. Volgens C|Net staat deze nog wel op de AMD Roadmap staat (AMD doet nogal wazig over de K6-2+ en K6-III+):

Amid the race between AMD and Intel to release chips running at 1 GHz, AMD is phasing out its K6-III processor line.

[...] The K6-III is no longer being sold for desktop computers, an AMD spokeswoman acknowledged. The company continues to sell some versions of the chip for notebook computers, but no new versions of the chip will emerge. AMD no longer puts K6-III chips on its official price lists.

Bij iXBT-Labs staat weer wat sappige info over nVidia's NV15. Volgens hun betrouwbare bronnen zal deze namelijk een kloksnelheid van 200MHz hebben, in tegenstelling tot de 160MHz zoals eerst werd aangenomen. Wel raar, want The Register meldde gisteren zelfs dat de NV15 juist slechts op 135MHz zou gaan opereren. Hopelijk zaten zij er flink naast (zou niet de eerste keer zijn ):

As you remember we posted (and then removed) a small preview on NVIDIA's upcoming GPUs - NV11 and NV15 in January 2000. NVIDIA's feedback was "awful" (they not only asked us to remove the article but claimed that the info was wrong). So, what do we have today? 

1. Some very "honest" sites posted HOT info on NV11/NV15 - the same words, the same numbers, the same features as we had posted in preview. What does it mean? It means that the info from our sources was absolutely true

According to the same source (it is very important because it guarantees that this info is also true) due to improvements in technological process NVIDIA's new GPUs will use a core running at 200MHz (not 160MHz as stated earlier). Besides, the source let us know that NVIDIA would use 128-bit (24-bit internal) DAC code-named Picasso integrated into the same package with the core.

That is not the entire info and we'll certainly post some new details before the official release - so, stay tuned!

EBN Online schrijft dat de huidige prijsexplosie in de heugenmarkt, waarbij 64Mbit chips binnen vier dagen 36% in prijs zijn gestegen, waarschijnlijk van korte duur zal zijn. Door de leveringsproblemen bij Intel kwamen er in februari veel meer geheugen chips in de omloop dan er verkocht konden worden. Inmiddels nemen de supplies van PIII processors weer toe, maar zitten de geheugen fabrikanten nog steeds met grote voorraden die zij in februari niet op de markt konden brengen:

Despite the rise, there's still too much inventory in the supply chain for the higher prices to hold, according to Frank Cavallaro, director of worldwide marketing at NECX Inc., Peabody, Mass.

“Manufacturers temporarily withheld DRAMs from the market to drive up prices,” Cavallaro said. “They now hope to unload as much as they can of the built-up inventory at the higher price before that extra supply drives prices back down.”

Jonathan Joseph, a semiconductor analyst at Salomon Smith Barney Inc., San Francisco, expects the spot-market price spike to be short. He told investors that OEMs and manufacturers still have too much stock on hand that must be liquidated before DRAM demand picks up again at midyear.

EBN Online schrijft dat de JEDEC (Solid State Technology Association) volgende week begint met het opstellen van de PC3200 specificaties. PC3200 wordt ontwikkeld om het gat tussen PC2100 DDR en de toekomstige DDR-2 standaard te overbruggen en heeft een maximale bandbreedte van 3,2GByte/sec, vergelijkbaar met dual channel PC800 Rambus. De eerste PC3200 modules zullen in 2001 op de markt komen. In het artikel wordt gesuggereerd dat er mogelijk Athlon chipsets met dual channel DDR op de markt komen. Dit zou gigantische bandbreedtes van 4,2 tot 6,4GByte/s mogelijk maken, ver boven de snelheden van dual channel Rambus:

If a PC3200 standard is ratified by the end of the year, the first modules to incorporate the new chip could come to market in 2001, Rhoden said. He referred to PC3200 as “a kind of DDR-1.5” that will offer higher interim performance until the next-generation DDR-2 specification comes to market in 2003.

[...] When it debuts, PC3200 SDRAM is expected to enable Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Athlon processors to match the 3.2-Gbyte/s data rates of the upcoming Intel Willamette MPUs. In the meantime, the first DDR Athlons using PC2100 modules are slated to debut midyear, with a 2.1-Gbyte/s data rate twice that of the PC133 SDRAMs used by Intel's Pentium IIIs.

Intel could recover the data-rate lead with Willamette, slated to go into production early next year. However, Rhoden said Athlon-based PCs could also use a dual-channel PC2100 memory configuration capable of an even higher 4.2-Gbyte/s data rate. When PC3200 becomes available, dual-channel DDR-enabled desktops and workstations could have a bandwidth as high as 6.4 Gbytes/s, he added.

Corum.nl heeft een Nederlandse handleiding in elkaar getikt waarin wordt uitgelegd hoe je de Promise Ultra66 kunt ombouwen tot een echte FastTrak66 IDE RAID controller. Handig voor de personen die niet overweg kunnen met het verhaaltje van deze Duitser.

News.com meldt dat AMD komende maandag de 1GHz Athlon zal introduceren, tegelijkertijd met de Athlon 900 en 950. Intel heeft zich hiermee in een extra moeilijk positie geplaatst, want niet alleen is AMD de eerste processor fabrikant die officieel een 1GHz CPU releast - ook wordt door analisten verwacht dat AMD beter in staat zal zijn om deze processors te leveren. De 1GHz Athlons hebben in tegenstelling tot de 1GHz PIII's bovendien geen "specially designed motherboards with larger heat sinks" nodig om stabiel op 1000MHz te kunnen draaien:

While both companies will announce chips next week, the bigger question will be which company can produce them in volume. Intel has been suffering from shortages of high-end Pentium IIIs since October. While Intel executives and analysts say the situation has improved, consumers and dealers say the fastest Pentium IIIs can still be tough to find. Computer makers have also complained about tight supplies of the fastest processors, especially the 800-MHz chip, Intel's fastest.

AMD has had to endure similar, but less severe, shortages.

"Anyone can make an announcement. The question is who is going to have the first units for sale from a major (computer maker)," said Kevin Krewell, senior analyst with MicroDesign Resources.

Nathan Brookwood, among other analysts, has pointed out that AMD is able to boost the clock speed of Athlon fairly easily. The chip only came out last year, and AMD has yet to take full advantage of all of the potential of the new architecture.
