Dell is gestopt met het voorinstalleren van Red Had Linux op desktop-PC's en notebooks. Als reden wordt de 'geringe vraag' opgegeven. De stap komt niet geheel onverwacht, gezien het feit dat Dell meer potentieel ziet voor Linux op workstations en servers.

Dell gooit het gratis, Open Source operating system echter niet compleet in de ban: men kan nog steeds workstations en servers bestellen met Red Hat Linux voorgeïnstalleerd. Ook acht men het aannemelijk dat grote klanten die custom-made PC's bestellen, de mogelijkheid behouden Red Hat Linux te kiezen als voorgeïnstalleerd Operating System.

Volgens Red Hat's Melissa London is het moeilijk gebleken een voet tussen de deur te krijgen in de huidige desktopmarkt:

"With Linux, the productivity suites just aren't there," London said. As a result, she added, "you're fighting a pretty big uphill battle" to establish the operating system on the desktop.

"Not that we're not trying, but obviously the biggest growth is on the server," she said.

IBM blijft wel Linux leveren op verschillende desktop-PC's en notebooks, maar ook daar klinken de geluiden dat het meerendeel van de klanten die Linux verkiezen als voorgeïnstalleerd Operating System, servers bestellen.

De mannen van GamePC werden door Rambus uitgenodigd om een bezoekje te brengen aan het hoofdkantoor om daar wat rond te gluren. Hierover hebben ze een artikel geschreven waarin veel informatie staat over de toekomt van het Rambus geheugen, en natuurlijk zijn een paar foto’s niet vergeten. Een van de dingen te zien waren was een Pentium 4 in combinatie met PC1066, de opvolger van het PC800 geheugen. Verder waren er prototypes te zien van 32 en 64 bit RDRAM. Hieronder een stukje uit de ‘conclusie’:

All in all, the future looks pretty bright for RDRAM technology in itself. Lots more bandwidth, higher clock speeds, lower pricing. As for Rambus, the company, it's going to be very tough to win back people's opinion of how this company works. Due to their lawsuit-happy ways, Rambus has burned a lot of bridges in the industry, which will be tough and long road to repair.
So will the RDRAM of the future be enough to stop the "DDR-Revolution"? Well, that's a tough call. For the time being, it looks like both DDR and RDRAM have their markets, and it doesn't look like there will be much change. With VIA, AMD, ALi, SIS, and now nVidia all joining forces to promote DDR, it's going to take a monumental feat to knock DDR out of the picture.

Personally, I like having both DDR and RDRAM out on the market. Both create competition for the other, and neither memory standard is perfect. Competition drives prices down, and urges the competing parties to keep innovating new technologies to get ahead. Having JUST DDR or JUST RDRAM would be terrible for the memory industry, as monopolies cause nothing but problems.

New Scientist brengt ons op de hoogte van de details achter een nieuwe kopieerbeveiliging die Midbar Tech ontwikkeld heeft. De technologie baseert zich grotendeels op de beveiliging van Macrovision waar we pas geleden over berichtten, en probeert ook te voorkomen dat audio CD's gekopieerd worden door een computer. Er wordt wat foutieve data op de CD gezet, die gemarkeerd wordt als 'besturingsinformatie'. Een CD-speler leest hier overheen, maar de PC brandt het over zodat de gefabriceerde audio-CD voor geen meter meer klinkt.

Het gaat echter nog verder, aangezien de kopie van een beveiligde CD de luidsprekers van het afspeelsysteem kan beschadigen. Door een golf uit te zenden waarbij het signaal zeer snel wisselt tussen hoog en laag, kunnen de elektronische circuits het begeven. Op dit moment is de kopieerbeveiliging nog niet zo afgesteld, maar in het geval van nieuwe kraakmogelijkheden zou dit wel eens ingevoerd kunnen worden:

Midbar's patent points out that all music CDs store bursts of music code and control information. The music data is marked with "flags" which tell the CD player to decode it and send it to the amplifier and loudspeakers. The control information is not decoded.

When burning the original CD, Midbar's idea is to replace some of the music with false data and label it as control information. While CD players do not decode this, they are designed to disguise the gap by bridging it with guessed data. So the original CD plays acceptably, according to Midbar. "We have had no problems with loudspeakers," Shavit says. While acknowledging that it may seem "unacceptable" to harm consumers' equipment deliberately, he adds, "It's 'sweat engineering'. We can add extra lines of defence as people use new attacks."

Het 'distributed computing'-principe dat we al kennen van bijvoorbeeld Distributed.net's RC5 en de marsmannetjeszoektocht SETI@Home, wil IBM commerciëler gaan aanpakken. Onder de naam Grid Computing Initiative is het bedrijf van plan computers aan te gaan bieden aan organisaties, die tijdelijk een grote hoeveelheid processorkracht nodig hebben. Zuinig zal IBM niet doen, aangezien er volgens de planning voor maar liefst vier miljard dollar geïnvesteerd zal worden in de Grid's. Het idee is om het Grid-systeem behoorlijk flexibel te gaan maken, zodat een bedrijf er eenvoudig computers bij kan krijgen als er nog meer rekenkracht nodig is.

Op dit moment heeft men in Nederland al vijf universiteiten op elkaar aangesloten, om het nieuwe systeem van IBM te testen. Wetenschappelijke systemen zijn verenigd in de ASCI Research School (Advanced School for Computing and Imaging), zodat ingewikkelde berekeningen gemaakt kunnen worden. Hoe lang het nog zal duren voordat de commerciële toepassingen ook echt uitgevoerd zullen kunnen worden is nog onbekend, maar het is aannemelijk dat dit al binnen een paar jaar is:

IBM plans to take a distributed computing concept from the theoretical realm and make it a corporate reality. "Grid" technology, which distributes computing jobs and databases across numerous servers, has largely been an academic phenomenon. But on Thursday IBM plans to give the idea a corporate twist with its so-called Grid Computing Initiative.

"We'll make available to the customer the opportunity to gain access to computer resources that aren't physically on site," said Dave Turek, the company's vice president of Linux and emerging technologies. Those computing resources will be able to respond quickly "as customer needs expand or contract."

OCWorkbench heeft de specs en een foto gevonden van de Asus P4B. Dit moederbord is gebaseerd op Intel's i845 chipset (lancering komende maand) en is geschikt voor Pentium 4 CPU's (478-pins versie). Het plankje krijgt 3 DIMM-sloten voor PC100 en PC133 geheugen, 6xPCI, 1xCNR, 1xAGP en onboard sound. De M-versie zal daarnaast een Realtek RTL8100 LAN-controller bevatten, en een betere C-Media 6-kanaals geluidschip. Helaas is er nog geen prijs- of releaseinfo bekend.

ATi zal in het vierde kwartaal met een northbridge voor de Pentium III en Athlon komen, aldus X-Bit Labs. Net als de nForce van nVidia wordt deze voorzien van een ingebakken graphics core. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk wordt hiervoor gebruik gemaakt van de RV200, de chip die tevens op de Radeon 2 VE te vinden zal zijn. Verder zal deze 'A3' ondersteuning bieden voor PC1600 / PC2100 DDR SDRAM, een extern AGP-slot en een integrated clock generator bevatten die het design van een A3-moederbord aanzienlijk goedkoper moet maken. Een southbridge wordt niet apart ontwikkeld; ATi wil hiervoor een reeds bestaande chip gebruiken, zoals de ALi 1535+ of SMSC Victory 66. ATi wil verder ook de mobiele markt van een dergelijke chipset voorzien:

The chipset from ATI will work with PC1600/PC2100 DDR SDRAM (64bit wide). There will be no tricky solutions aimed at increasing the memory subsystem performance, like we see in NVIDIA Crush. Also this chipset will feature an integrated UMA graphics core supposedly based on RV200 architecture. Moreover, it will also support an external AGP slot. Among the most remarkable features of the newcomer, we should point out the integrated clock generator, which will make the mainboard based on this chipset noticeably cheaper.

Besides the desktop version, ATI is also planning to develop a mobile one. So, ATI has a totally different plan of conquering the chipset market. While NVIDIA is making quite expensive solutions, ATI did its best to reduce the chipset cost as much as possible but at the same time provided it with a good graphics core.

De introductiedatum van VIA's P4X266 Pentium 4 DDR chipset komt steeds dichterbij, maar er blijft onduidelijkheid bestaan over de officiële licentie die Intel nog steeds niet heeft afgegeven. Tot nu hebben daarom alleen kleine moederbordfabrikanten P4X266-moederborden voorbereid, want de grotere spelers willen hun hechte relatie met Intel niet verstoren:

VIA has been trying to keep a low profile while officially discussing the time for P4X266 volume production has been reluctant to comment on shipment times. Motherboard makers revealed privately that VIA began sending P4X266 samples to clients around the end of June, and both first and second-tier manufacturers have completed the development of related product lines. First-tier motherboard makers, left to guess at what Intel’s real stance is on the P4X266 issue, are facing a dilemma in deciding whether to wait until the legal dispute is resolved or to give top priority to profits. Small and medium-sized motherboard makers, in contrast, have no such concerns. VIA has guaranteed them that if any legal dispute arises, it will be responsible for all their related losses. Some of them, therefore, have decided to follow VIA’s timetable to mass-produce P4X266 motherboards.

Ken Ng van RojakPot heeft een review on-line gezet van de Zalman CNPS5000-Plus cooler, een cooler die ontwikkeld is om dezelfde performance als GlobalWins en Alphas te halen, zonder lawaai. Uit de reviews van de Zalman CNPS3100 is al gebleken dat de CNPS technologie (Computer Noise Prevention System) goed werkt. De CNPS5000 plus ziet er evenals de CNPS3100 niet allerdaags uit. De heatsink bestaat uit een koperen core waaromheen 60 koperen plaatjes van 0,3mm dik zijn geplaatst. De heatsink wordt bevestigd middels vier gaten in het moederbord die rond de socket zitten. Standaard wordt een 5600RPM fan meegeleverd die 40dBa aan geluid produceert. Dit is wel wat meer dan zijn broertje, maar nog altijd een stukje minder dan andere koelers.

De prestaties van het beestje zijn goed. De GlobalWin FOP38 was slechts één graadje koeler bij zowel idle als stress. De enige nadelen van de koeler zijn de grootte en het bevestigings mechanisme. Om de koeler te gebruiken heb je vier gaten in je mamaplankje nodig. De meeste P4 borden hebben deze gaten, maar slechts sommige AMD plankjes beschikken hierover. Hieronder nog een hap uit de conclusie:

The CNPS5000-Plus retails for USD 49 if you get them from their online store. That roughly translates into RM 186.20. Including shipping, you will probably need to fork out about RM 250 to get this baby. This is considerably more expensive than your average cooler but the main advantage of this cooler again is its excellent performance over noise level ratio.

No other cooler can perform as well as the CNPS5000-Plus with the same noise level that it boasts. In fact, if you don't really care about excessive noise, you can couple it with a black label Delta fan and the CNPS5000-Plus can potentially match the cooling performance of the monstrous and extremely expensive Swiftech cooler!

Colin Sun heeft een artikel on-line gezet over het TwinMOS 256MB PC2100 (PC2700) DDR-geheugen. Alhoewel dit geheugen als PC2100 wordt verkocht (133MHz, 7,5 ns) is deze module handmatig eruit gehaald, omdat de module ook prima op 166MHz (PC2700) draait. Helaas kon de reviewer dit niet 100% testen, omdat zijn testplank, een Iwll KA266, tot maximaal 146MHz FSB gaat. Het TwinMOS reepje werd vergeleken met het populaire Crucial geheugen. Uit de benchmarks is duidelijk op te maken dat het TwinMOS geheugen beter presteert dan het Crucial geheugen (11% FPU en 7,7% ALU). Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

DDRAM has a very bright future as the successor to SDRAM. DDR has more than enough memory bandwidth to feed today's, and tomorrow's processors, it's relatively cheap to produce and only requires manufacturers to upgrade their current machines instead of replacing them all together. Most importantly, it is fast!

For anyone even considering buying a new computer, or upgrading their current AMD system, consider going DDR as a must.

Motherboards that support DDR memory are just a bit more expensive than their SDRAM counterparts so why would a consumer skimp on performance in the long run? If you stick to SDRAM you may find yourself regretting it in the future, especially with impressive offerings like this from TwinMOS.
