Volgens verschillende bronnen, waaronder mensen op de forum's van AnandTech en AMD Zone melden dat Thunderbird 1,2GHz processors die vanaf week 1 dit jaar zijn geproduceerd geen multiplier lock meer hebben. Normaalgesproken moeten de L1 bruggen op de processor verbonden worden, omdat overklokken door de multiplier aan te passen anders niet mogelijk is. Bij deze nieuwe lading zijn deze bruggen echter al verbonden als ze uit de doos komen. Een verklaring hiervoor zou kunnen zijn dat AMD op deze manier dezelfde processors kan gebruiken op 12 x 100MHz en 9 x 133MHz om ze als 1,2GHz te verkopen:

We just got in 15 1.2Gig T-Bird. All of them are unlocked. One of our customer is running his at 9.0 x 133 FSB. We will soon see what the difference is between running the 1.2 at 133 and at 100.

All of them have a week code of 0101. I'm guessing this is the first week of 2001. Since all the other CPUs had a code of 00XX.

Het is niet bekend of dit ook op Thunderbirds met andere snelheden of Durons het geval is, maar het lijkt erop dat kopers van een 1,2GHz Thunderbirds geen potloodstreepjes meer hoeven zetten .

Mindfields dropte een linkje richting X-Bit Labs, waar een review is verschenen van Epox' KT133A moederbord 8KTA3. DIt is één van de meest complete moederborden met deze chipset; ISA, 6x PCI, AGP, 4 DIMM én een RAID controller zijn op de printplaat geperst. Ondanks de drukke layout bleek het bord erg stabiel te zijn en zoals we inmiddels van de KT133A chipset gewend zijn erg goed te presteren. We vinden echter wel kleine nadeeltjes in het overklok-gedeelte, zoals het verlies van stabiliteit met een FSB boven de 150MHz en het ontbreken van 1MHz stapjes, waardoor fine-tunen niet mogelijk is. De conclusie trekt zich daar niets van aan:

Speaking about EPoX EP-8KTA3 mainboard, which was used in our a system built on VIA KT133A chipset, it has brought delightful results. This board can boast marvelous stability and excellent performance. All this ensures high performance even with a 200MHz bus. Of course, this mainboard is no absolute perfection, but for many of us it can be the right thing to choose. EP-8KTA3 is sure to win the hearts of overclockers, who may find 8KTA3 good enough to satisfy all their needs.

Met bijna 2.5M blokjes stond DPC gisteren nog wel op #1, maar toch wel minder overtuigend dan de voorgaande dagen. Gelukkig kwam er wel weer een flink aantal nieuwe leden bij, die hopelijk vlijtig mee zullen grazen om AnandTech voor te blijven.

EETimes meldt in dit artikel dat het mogelijk wordt de maximale kabellengte voor ADSL-verbindingen te verlengen. Momenteel nog gelimiteerd tot zo'n 5 kilometer zou met de technologie van Symmetricom de maximale kabellengte van eindgebruiker tot centrale meer dan verdubbeld kunnen worden!

Toepassing van deze techniek zou in de Amerikaanse situatie betekenen dat 95% van alle telefoonaansluitingen binnen het ADSL-bereik zouden komen, een percentage dat nu nog op 60% ligt. Hoe het met de nederlandse situatie zit vermeldt het artikel uiteraard niet, maar aangezien Nederland aanzienlijk dichter bevolkt is dan de USA moet een dergelijke winst ook hier haalbaar zijn. Nadelen zijn er echter ook: de kosten per eindgebruiker zijn zo'n $500 tot $700 en de transmissiesnelheden zijn beperkt tot 1,5Mbits/s downstream en 128 kbits/s upstream:

Symmetricom Inc. says a third-party tester has confirmed that its GoLong asymmetric digital subscriber line extenders more than double the range of ADSL connections. The standard 14,000-foot limit is reportedly increased to 30,000 feet from a central office, potentially increasing the percentage of phone customers capable of ADSL connects from 60 to 95 percent. The cost per user will run between $500 and $700.

[...] Dropping added that GoLong can coexist with non-repeatered ADSL, living within the bounds of Spectrum Management Class 5 (SMC 5) power spectral density as defined by the T1E1.4 standards committee. "This allows us to take our next step in the deployment of GoLong at field trial locations late this year as well as making technical contributions to industry-standards groups such as the DSL Forum and T1E1.4," he said.

Al met al toch interessant nieuws, nu maar hopen dat deze truc ook in Nederland toepasbaar is .

Tom komt ditmaal met een roundup van zes mamaplankjes die voorzien zijn van VIA's nieuwste chipset, de KT133A. Bekeken worden de Abit KT7A-RAID, Asus A7V133, Azza KT3ABX, DFI AK74-AC, de Epox 8KTA3 en tenslotte de Soltek SL75KAV-X.

De KT133A chipset is een doorontwikkelde KT133, met als essentieel verschil de ondersteuning van processoren met een FSB van 133MHz. Geen DDR-geheugen op deze bordjes dus, maar 'ouderwets' SDRAM .

Toch blijkt uit de tests dat het 'gemis' van DDR-geheugen niet al te pijnlijk is: de prestaties zijn prima, en rechtvaardigen (althans voorlopig) de aanschaf van DDR-geheugen niet. Bovendien blijken alle zes de bordjes 100% stabiel te lopen! En da's op zich al nieuws! Hier de conclusie van het verhaal:

You may have noticed the memory test boxes on every motherboard evaluation box. We ran a large variety of PC133 SDRAM memory modules on those boards to check for possible compatibility issues. Surprisingly as well as pleasantly enough, none of the test boards had any problem with any of the memory modules.

The three fastest motherboards in this comparison are the Asus A7V133, ABit's K7TA and the Epox 8KTA3. The highest continuity was seen with the Asus A7V133. All other boards keep changing the positions throughout the various benchmarks.

However, the benchmark results alone are not good enough to declare any of these motherboards a winner, particularly if you take into account that the differences in the scores are rather small.

The most important finding was the enjoyable fact that each of the tested boards ran 100% stable even at the fastest possible memory timing settings. VIA's upcoming DDR chipsets may not look too impressive right now, but the Apollo KT133A is a matured, fast and solid product that offers good performance.

Het klinkt sommigen misschien wat overdreven in de oren, maar op Infoworld is inderdaad een artikel verschenen met een dergelijke strekking. Als oorzaak voor deze mogelijke bedreiging wordt met name het commitment van IBM ten aanzien van Linux genoemd: 'Big Blue' is serieus van plan enorme bedragen ($1 miljard in 2001 alleen al) in Linux te investeren, zoals reeds eerder gemeld.

Daarnaast zijn RedHat, SuSE en TurboLinux serieus geinteresseerd om ook hier hun graantje mee te pikken, en genoemde leveranciers hebben dan ook voornemens om ook versies voor IBM's mainframes te gaan leveren. Tenslotte is ook het verschijnen van kernel 2.4.0 van belang voor al deze mooie plannen: de nieuwe kernel ondersteunt ook IBM's S/390 en z900 mainframes, en dat maakt het allemaal natuurlijk nog weer interessanter. Hieronder nog enkele citaten uit het stuk, wie het naadje van de kous wil weten kan het hier allemaal nog eens rustig nalezen:

In the past three months, top-tier Linux distributors including Red Hat, TurboLinux, and SuSE have pledged or deepened commitments to work with IBM and deliver native versions of Linux that exploit Big Blue's mainframes. IBM will underscore that relationship by bundling Linux versions of key middleware products, such as WebSphere, MQSeries, and CICS, with the new versions of the operating system.

[...] "Over the next year, I think you will see a number of wins where IBM convinces Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Compaq shops that their cost of computing can be lowered if they consolidate their midrange systems onto a single [mainframe-based] Parallel Sysplex system," says Dan Kusnetzky, vice president of system software research at IDC, in Framingham, Mass.

Tenslotte wordt nog gemeld dat UNIX-leverancier SCO (Santa Cruz Organisation) en Linux-leverancier Caldera samen een werkmaatschappij gaan oprichten die software-oplossingen moet gaan leveren voor de integratie van UNIX- en Linux-systemen. Meer daarover wordt later deze maand bekendgemaakt, dus nog even geduld .

UPC laat in een press-release weten dat het samen met Cisco VoIP (Voice over IP) gaat aanbieden in Europa. Hiervoor wil UPC het bestaande kabelnetwerk gaan gebruiken. Het project gaat drie jaar duren en het zal 500.000 mensen de gelegenheid geven om van VoIP gebruik te maken. Een groot voordeel van VoIP is de lage prijs waarvoor het kan worden aangeboden. Hieronder een gedeelte uit de press-release:

William Nuti, Senior Vice President of Cisco Systems, Europe, Middle East and Africa added: “Voice over IP is a ‘future-proof’ technology, which has matured for implementation on a pan-European scale. It will offer operators a new business model through which they can deploy and operate a single, multiservice broadband network. We have worked with UPC for around five years, and we are delighted to continue helping them deliver on their commitment to providing their customers with the foremost broadband network and the very latest in voice, video and data services.”

Op WebWereld is te lezen dat IBM een nieuwe beveiligingstechniek heeft gelanceerd om het illegaal kopiëren van muziek via filesharings programma's te stoppen. Met de techniek kunnen twee gebruikers onbeperkt muziek uitwisselen. Wordt de muziek echter doorgestuurd naar een derde persoon, dan is de pret over: slechts dertig seconden muziek of helemaal niets. De bezitters van het copyright op een bepaald muziekstuk kunnen zelf bepalen hoe lang het geluisterd mag worden. De techniek is overigens niet alleen bedoeld voor muziek. Ook distributeurs van boeken kunnen de techniek gebruiken om hun product te beschermen. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel van WebWereld:

IBM geeft toe dat ook deze techniek niet honderd procent veilig is. Maar Burnett durft wel te beweren dat de techniek van IBM een van de beste is die tot nu toe ontwikkeld is. IBM verwacht dat als er een manier gevonden is om de beveiliging te omzeilen, dat slechts een beperkt aantal consumenten door de bescherming heen probeert te breken.

[...] De vraag is of deze techniek in staat is om te overleven. Hoe snel de muziekindustrie ook komt met een nieuwe techniek om kopiëren tegen te gaan, ondergronds wordt steeds weer een manier gevonden om de beveiliging te breken.

Analisten denken niet dat muziekuitwisseldiensten als Napster zomaar verdwijnen. "De peer-to-peer-techniek is daarvoor de laatste tijd te populair geworden. Volgens mij is het proberen in te dammen van het kopiëren van muziek vergelijkbaar met de oorlog die tegen de drugshandel gevoerd wordt: het is moeilijk om er grip op te krijgen", zegt Rob Batchelder, analist bij Gartner Group tegen CNet.

Yiry schrijft ons dat AnandTech een review online heeft gezet van de Abit KT7A-RAID. Als eerste wordt de layout van het moederboard uitgebreid besproken. Erg veel veranderingen op de KT7-RAID zijn er niet te vinden en er worden dan ook bijna dezelfde voor- en nadelen gevonden. Een review zou geen review zijn als er niet zou worden gekeken naar de overklokbaarheid, en dat heeft Anand dan ook voor ons gedaan.

Gewapend met een 1GHz Thunderbird en Mushkin PC133 CAS2 SDRAM werd onderzocht wat nou het maximum haalbare van deze configuratie is. Het viel op dat de multiplier niet lager wilde dan 7.5x, iets wat een probleem zou kunnen opbrengen bij de nog wat "tragere" Athlons. Mocht je namelijk een Athlon 800MHz op een 133FSB willen draaien dan zal de multiplier naar 6x moeten. De hoogst behaalde FSB met dit moederbord kwam op 144MHz met CAS2 en 147MHz met het geheugen op CAS3:

There is no doubt that the ABIT KT7A-RAID is a really impressive motherboard. All of ABIT’s signature features have been included and should satisfy all overclockers. It is not very different from its older brother the KT7-RAID, but the features it has definitely make this board stand out from the early KT133A crowd.

The competition in the KT133A arena is about to heat up, however, with just about every manufacturer releasing their own product with this new chipset. Only time will tell if the KT7A-RAID can withstand the heat. However we anticipate that it will do just fine.

ecteinascidin en boer Krelis gaven ons deze link waar we kunnen lezen over een nieuw soort koeling: microscopisch. Het gaat hier om een ventilatortje van nog geen speldenkop groot. Zo zou het mogelijk zijn om heel veel van deze koelers op 1 chip te planten:

Microchips inside a PC could one day be cooled by armies of microscopic fans actually grown on the surface of the chips and removing the need for a large, noisy cooling fan.

The inventors of the microfan, which is small enough to sit on the head of a pin, speculate that it could also be used to propel tiny flying machines or pump chemicals around lab-on-a-chip analysis devices.

The fan has eight blades, each less than half a millimetre long. It was made by etching shapes into thin silicon sheets. "You have to think in two dimensions when you design it, but know how it will turn out once it's been folded into position," says Paul Kladitis of the University of Colorado at Boulder. "It's like being some kind of pop-up book artist."

De fan zou volgens de makers ook gebruikt kunnen worden om
chemicaliën rond een soort mini-lab te pompen of zelfs om minuscule voertuigen voort te bewegen.

friso gaf ons deze link waar we kunnen zien dat de eerste supercomputer gebaseerd op de AMD Athlon in ontwikkeling is. De supercomputer moet 132 1GHz Athlon processoren gaan bevatten en zal naar verwachting tot de top 200 van snelste supercomputers in de wereld gaan behoren. Het blijkt dat koeling nogal een probleem is aangezien dit "beestje" nogal wat hitte produceert:

Code-named Samson, the supercomputer will initially include 132 1-GHz Athlon CPUs mounted inside chassis manufactured by RackSaver Inc., with an interconnect provided by Dolphin Interconnect Solutions Inc, RackSaver executives said.

[...] In its technical documents, AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., has asked heatsink manufacturers to allow for up to 76 watts, a heat level that can prove even more problematic when large numbers of the processors are clustered together.

Bij PC Hardware is een review te vinden van de Altec Lansing ATP5 speakerset. Dit 4.1 setje is de "gaming edition" van de ATP3 en bestaat zodoende uit vier satellietspeakers en een subwoofer. De ATP5 heeft twee analoge en twee digitale ingangen. Bass, treble en volume worden digitaal afgesteld, wat wordt weergegeven met een paar fraaie ledjes. Wat geluidskwaliteit betreft is men vooral zeer tevreden over de hoge en lage tonen; de midrange komt er minder goed vanaf. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

The conclusion of our auditorium was that ATP5 sounds more than good. High sounds are extremely clear even if the specs show a lack between 18-20kHz. The subwoofer is also powerful and delivers a very dynamic low frequency response. I can say that I was delighted about these speakers from the start. Supplied cables are high quality, installation is easy and why not to mention the design is special. For users with limited space on the desk which still play games and want quality these are definitely the speakers. The second thing unconventional about these speakers which impressed me was the volume control. In the audio tests I remarked the power of the build in amplifier and the features of adjusting bass and treble response.

It was hard to find weak points, in fact ATP5 seems to be a dream sound system for any gamer. Yes, mid level sound does not reach the quality of bass when you turn the volume to the maximum but below 70 percent the differences in the spectrum are not noticeable. Of course that on the market there are powerful speaker sets with 5.1 encoding but it's also true that these are also more expensive and somehow not so design attractive.

Hardware-Unlimited heeft een review online gezet van de fireLINE 30GB Firewire hardeschijf van Evergreen. Deze schijf is op het moment alleen aan te raden als je echt een redelijk snelle externe hardeschijf nodig hebt. Hij is namelijk 3x zo duur en veel trager dan zijn IDE tegenhangers. Zo haalt ie in alle tests een gemiddelde doorvoersnelheid van ongeveer 6MB per seconde. Toch zijn ze bij Hardware-Unlimited redelijk positief over het apparaat. Dat blijkt uit de volgende conclusie:

The portability and speed compared with typical removable drives is excellent, but it is no replacement for a fast internal drive. For backing up data and transporting it, a Firewire hard drive might just fit your needs. But looking strictly at the cost is some cause for concern. The idea of being totally portable and simple to install, however, will persuade those to whom cost is no object. However, considering the fact that these drives sell for nearly three times the cost of the same size drive in UDMA100 or UDMA66, will dissuade those of us who are left. Hopefully, if the cost comes down to that of an internal drive, I would be one of the first ones to jump on the bandwagon to add this external hard drive. I just can’t emphasize enough how the ease of set up and use as well as the portability amazes me. In the next year or so, once every computer ships with a Firewire interface, the drive will find a newer and large market. This hard drive is in a very promising light, and I look forward to seeing ways to get more speed out of it.
