TechExtreme is flink aan het branden geweest met de Creative CD-RW Blaster 12x10x32x drive. Zoals je vast al door had, brandt deze IDE-drive CDR's op 12x, CDRW's op 10x en leest hij op een snelheid van 32x. De CD-RW Blaster beschikt over Plextors / Sanyo's Burn Proof feature, waardoor je geen last meer hebt van buffer underruns. De 2MB buffer is vergeleken met de concurrentie wat mager uitgevallen, maar met Burn Proof is dat ook niet meer zo van belang. Audio rippen doet deze drive met een snelheid van 15x, niet opvallend snel dus. Dit is echter een van de weinige negatieve punten van deze drive:

You really can’t go wrong with the CD-RW Blaster 12\10\32x drive. Even though it’s an EIDE drive, its performance comes very close to the maximum rated specs on the product box. Being able to create CD-R discs in just under eight minutes is a nice plus, especially for people that are in time-critical situations. The added benefit of being able to record CD-RW media in close to the same time as CD-R media is also impressive. Finally, the suggested retail price of $249.99 makes the CD-RW a tough deal to pass up.

About the only negative point I can think of at this point is its less than stellar DAE ripping speeds. Even then, most users will be very happy to be able to rip audio at 15x speeds. Another negative point that could be considered is the bundled software. While I swear on Nero Burning ROM, it might not be other people’s cup of tea, especially those that have grown accustomed to Adaptec’s easy to use Easy CD Creator. Prassi abCD is also not the most popular packet-writing software around, and without support for Windows 2000, some people might be put off with it.

Bij Digit-Life heeft men eens een kijkje genomen naar Asus' iPanel basic, een kastje dat in een 5,25" bay past en de gebruiker voorziet van informatie over de status van zijn systeem. Problemen tijdens de POST, snelheden van de CPU, FSB en geheugen, voltages en zelfs het aantal RPM van de fans kan worden weergegeven met een druk op de knop. Verder kan het ding ingesteld worden om bepaalde programma's op te starten door op een knop te drukken en zitten er twee USB poorten op, zodat je bijvoorbeeld een muis of scanner kan aansluiten zonder achter je bureau in de kabelrotzooi te moeten zoeken naar de connector :

Information on the CPU/FSB/Mem frequency is ineffective, displaying of temperature, voltages and frequencies is interesting but makes not the best solution without a sound signal on exceeding the rated values - you really won't look at them constantly. And in some critical situations the sound diagnostics would allow a user to trace them and to make a dicision - either change nothing or switch off the machine. The software is a good feature, though it's not that necessary. The price for our model hovers around 20-30 USD and is the main deterrent.

For a real lover of ASUS it's interesting, for an owner of a motherboard from another manufacturer it's absolutely unnecessary, and for me the iPanel became another argument that ASUS is one of the most interesting manufacturers of computer components .

Bij InQuest is een artikel verschenen waarin InfiniBand en PCI-X met elkaar worden vergeleken. De eerste PCI-X generatie zal nog dit jaar in servers verschijnen met een bandbreedte van 1GB/s. De sleutelwoorden zijn goedkoop, flexibel en compatible. InfiniBand is echter met haar beginsnelheid van 0,5GB/s nog een tijdje weg, maar heeft in tegenstelling tot PCI-X een aantal interessante nieuwe features, waarover je ook hier al kon lezen. De twee standaarden zijn, hoewel ze deels overlappen, geen directe concurrenten, de InfiniBand standaard is namelijk meer universeel dan PCI-X:

InfiniBand and the “cloud computing” clustering model, will serve as a fountain of fascinating theoretical dialog for a while. Taken to its limits, InfiniBand dissolves the current notions of computing by treating all CPUs, memory and peripherals as part of a pooled resource cloud. This is an interesting exercise, but how does InfiniBand solve the practical problems faced by the IT manager or the user?

Intel positions InfiniBand to take on everything from Ethernet for LANs to Fibre Channel for SANs to PCI-X, LDT and Rapid I/O for inside-the-box chip-to-chip wiring. As a type of LAN alternative, InfiniBand comes up short against the inertia of existing standards.

Used as a local component interconnect however, the merits of InfiniBand are even thinner. It does not meaningfully exceed PCI-X bandwidth until its costly 12x implementation is ready. By that time we should expect to see more from PCI-X as well. But, as we have seen in other cases, bandwidth is not everything. InfiniBand is a serialized protocol based connection technology and as such suffers from poor latency due to excessive software overhead. PCI-X is a low latency, down to the metal, pure hardware interface.

Onze collega's van CammanTech.com hebben de AOpen AW744 geluidskaart eens op de testbank gelegd. Dit kaartje, met vier speakeruitgangen, is met z'n prijs van $43 bedoeld voor de budgetgamers onder ons. De Yamaha YMF744 chipset ondersteunt DirectSound, Sensaura 3D Sound en Aureal A3D. Daarnaast heeft de AW744 Pro een S/PDIF in/out, waarbij de uitgang ook nog eens optisch is. Het bijhorende kabeltje is hierbij ook meegeleverd. Met deze geluidskaart is men dan ook zeer tevreden. Wat de prijs betreft is dit een budgetkaart, maar qua mogelijkheden zeker niet:

AnandTech heeft vandaag haar review van het AOpen AK73-1394 moederbord online gezet. Dit is net als de normale AK73 een Socket A plankje met de VIA KT133 chipset, maar dit model heeft als extraatje een IEEE1394 FireWire controller aan boord. De layout van het bord is precies hetzelfde gebleven omdat bij het ontwerp al rekening is gehouden met de extra controller die. Features zijn onder andere AGP, 5 PCI, 3 DIMM en AMR. De FireWire poorten zitten dan ook niet op het moederbord zelf, er moet een bracket door middel van twee kabels verbonden worden aan het moederbord. Verder heeft het moederbord Dr. Led, een geval dat een 5,25" bay opslurpt en naast een aantal diagnoselampjes plaats biedt voor tien CD-ROM's. Al met al een leuk moederbord, maar wel een beetje te laat:

It’s quite clear that the AK73-1394 is a very well rounded motherboard. The design is no different from the AK73 Pro, but this time AOpen has included a single-chip Firewire solution. Performance-wise it is almost the same as the AK73 Pro, while proving to be even more stable, allowing it to compete head to head with ASUS’ and ABIT’s KT133 solutions.

The only real problem with the AK73-1394 is the timing of its release. With all the KT133A motherboards waiting to be released, AOpen will have a tough time making a market for this board. On the other hand, with the current design of the board, it probably would not require a lot of effort to update this board with the KT133A chipset.

Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral trakteert ons op een review van de Sony MVC-FD95 en CD1000. Beide camera's hebben een zelfde optical systeem, een 2,1 megapixel HAD CCD met een maximale resolutie van 1600x1200. Ook hebben ze 10x optical en 20x digitale zoom en macro support, zodat je mooie close-ups kunt maken. De MVC-FD95 is uitgerust met een 4x floppy drive. De CD1000 maakt daarentegen gebruik van een 156MB CDR. De MVC-CD1000 gebruikt een stuk minder compressie en genereert 900KB JPEG'jes en kan ongecompresseerde TIFF plaatjes opslaan van ongeveer 6 MB:

Whereas the FD95’s image quality, especially in the higher resolutions, was affected by the strong compression algorithms used, the CD1000 has plenty of disk space to store any image, even in uncompressed format, thus doing away with any image quality compromise. Although the FD95 uses the same excellent optics as the CD1000 it lacks the uncompressed TIFF format or the lower compression of the CD1000 making it a less obvious choice for the professional or home-professional.

For the less demanding user however, anyone that isn’t making a living off of photography or doesn’t spend every single spare hour with a camera strapped around his neck, the FD95 will fit all your needs. From the universal floppy based storage to the speed at which images are stored, there isn’t a storage media that offers the same broad acceptance as the floppy disk. Your captured images can be looked at and accessed on any computer, PC or Mac, which has a floppy drive.

The CD1000 offers all that the FD95 has to offer and then some, with the 156MB CD-R media you can store an even larger number of images, without sacrificing image quality. The cheap CD-R media used blends in perfectly with the floppy based Mavica and offers great value in terms of MB/cents. Operation and speed are on par with that of the FD95 and the finalized CD-Rs can be read by any CD-ROM capable of handling the 3-inch (77mm) format.

Overall both cameras performed admirably and we had difficulties favoring one over the other if not for the CD1000’s image quality. Due to the excellent optics, the broad range of features and the manual adjustment possibilities for focus, white balance, etc. both camera’s will handle just about any scene perfectly and produce crisp and clear images. We’ll leave it up to you to decide between floppies or CD-R, if the CD1000 included a CD-RW drive, rather than a CD-R drive, offering rewrite capability, things would have been different though, we would have picked the CD1000 every time.

Na het lezen van een reaktie van WAcKiN met betrekking tot de in zijn ogen tegenvallende resultaten van DDR benchmarks schoot mij een artikel binnen dat ik enkele dagen geleden tegenkwam. In het artikel zet Ed Stroligo zijn gedachten op een rij over deze tendens die op meer plaatsen bij mensen is te vinden. Een goed onderbouwd stuk dat prettig te lezen is en zeker de moeite waard in het hele SDRAM/DDR/Rambus probleem. Hieronder een paar quotes:

I just read that someplace about DDR. If 20% were the required performance improvement for a product; the average hardware site product review would be an annual, not daily event.

[...] A year ago, I would have estimated an average 12% improvement from PC2100 DDR over PC133. Right now, we're getting a bit less than that. Once the kinks get worked out, I bet that's about what we end up with. Now I would say somewhat more for games and certain applications, but still no miracles.

However, that's certainly better than what we got going PC66 to PC100, or PC100 to PC133. We had to replace RAM back then, too, lot more expensive RAM at that time. Where was the concern then?

OC Workbench is een van de eerste met een review (van een engineering sample) van de Iwill DVD266-R Apollo Pro 266 DDR. Met dit moederbord, dat is uitgerust met de VIA Apollo Pro 266 chipset, is het mogelijk om een SMP systeem op te bouwen rondom Intel PIII processoren en DDR geheugen. De specs van dit bordje waren al eerder bekend gemaakt in een press release maar worden in het artikel nog eens duidelijk uitgelicht.

In de benchmarks is ook de Abit VP6 meegenomen om te kijken hoe het bord presteert. Hoewel de Iwill er duidelijk beter vanaf komt ten opzichte van de Abit, blijven de scores achter in vergelijking met een enkele Duron 600MHz op een SOYO SY-ADA moederbord.

Qua overclocken is het bord niet slecht maar het kan beter. Met een FSB van 155MHz konden enkele benchmarks gedraaid worden, maar het systeem was stabieler op 150MHz. Door onder andere de rare layout van het bord is het niet mogelijk 2 golden orbs te gebruiken. Een ander nadeel is dat het (nog) niet mogelijk was de VCore voltage voor elke processor appart in te stellen. Uiteindelijk krijgt het bord een rating van 3,5/5.

RefriedNoodle zorgde ervoor dat mijn browser terecht kwam op deze pagina van ZDNet's GameSpot. Volgens het bericht is Sony nu al bezig met het ontwikkelen van de PlayStation 3, meteen al na het finalizen van de PlayStation 2 dus. Het apparaat zal echter niet meer een normale spelcomputer zijn, maar een heuse internet-machine. Zo zullen de bankzaken erop geregeld kunnen worden en zal moederlief voortaan naar hartelust haar kleding via de 'spelcomputer' kunnen bestellen. Behalve de functieuitbreidingen is het ook nog eens de bedoeling de PS3 1000 (!!) keer zo snel te maken als zijn voorganger, maar er wordt nog niet aangegeven hoe dit precies gaat gebeuren:

In the article covering various aspects of digital entertainment, Ken Kutaragi speaks further on the PlayStation 3. According to Kutaragi, the PlayStation and computer entertainment division will serve as the drivers for the entire parent company. With the PlayStation 3, Sony hopes to merge content from its other divisions, such as Sony pictures and Sony music, by establishing a direct chain of distribution and by having the PlayStation 3 serve as the platform hub. Additionally, Sony's plans for the PS3 include online shopping functions, online banking, and other interactive Internet services.

Bij de Duitse afdeling van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft men een vergelijking gemaakt tussen een VIA 694XDP dual moederbord, en een Intel 815E Dual mobo. Een wat? Ja, je leest het goed, een dual moederbord gebaseerd op de 815E chipset. Ik viel zowat van mijn stoel toen ik begon te lezen in dit artikel, waarin de Acorp 6A815D zonder blikken of blozen werd behandeld. Er wordt wel opgemerkt dat deze chipset oorspronkelijk niet voor dual processing geschikt geacht werd, maar van enige verbazing lijkt geen sprake.

Wie nu denkt dat Intel van mening is veranderd, heeft het mooi mis. In hun vergelijkingstabel voor Mainstream & Value chipsets staat gewoon dat de 815E chipset ondersteuning heeft voor één processor, geen twee. Ik kan mij nog herinneren dat er deze zomer gespeculeerd werd dat enkele fabrikanten dualborden gebaseerd op deze chipset in ontwikkeling hadden, maar dat werd nergens bevestigd. Het is blijkbaar toch waar, want Acorp heeft de reviewers een vroege sample opgestuurd.

De sample wordt vergeleken met een meer volwassen dual bordje van Asus, de Asus CUV4X-D. Wie dol is op benchmarks moet vooral even gaan kijken. Echter, de benchmarks zijn niet het meest interessant in deze vergelijking. Niet geheel verrassend blijft het Acorp-bord redelijk ver achter in de benchmarks, wat vermoedelijk veroorzaakt wordt door de beta-status van dit dual 815E bord. Het zal zeker interessant worden om een dergelijke vergelijking te zien als het eindprodukt af is.

Als de performance van de 815E in dual configuraties te vergelijken is met die in single-CPU configuraties, dan zouden zulke moederborden nog wel een 5 tot 10 % sneller kunnen zijn dan dual borden gebaseerd op de VIA 694XDP northbridge. Dat zou menig liefhebber toch aan het denken kunnen zetten. De vraag is wel of die liefhebber ook behoefte zal hebben aan de on-board VGA van de 815E, al lijkt dat niet echt een probleem. Daarnaast zou het niet verbazen als niet al te ver in de toekomst ook de 815EP chipset voor twee processoren geschikt wordt bevonden. De grootste bedreiging voor het succes van dit type SMP-planken lijkt voorlopig een kwestie van geheugen te zijn. De 815E chipset ondersteunt maar 512 Mb PC133 geheugen, terwijl de concurrentie van VIA 1,5 Gb ondersteunt. De vraag is natuurlijk wel of mensen met geld genoeg voor meer dan 512 Mb aan geheugen wel in dit marktsegment te vinden zijn.

Dat dual systemen toch nog steeds flink duurder zijn is goed te zien in een kostenvergelijking die de duitsers gemaakt hebben:
