Nick Lenten stuurde ons een link naar Dimention Music, waar een kleine 200 foto's online gezet zijn, genomen op CES 2001, een grote electronicabeurs in de Verenigde Staten. Op de meeste foto's zijn de nieuwste MP3 gadgets te zien die door de verschillende bedrijven werden tentoongesteld. Hieronder een paar voorbeelden; een mogelijk ontwerp van de opvolger van de Creative Jukebox en een MP3 speler van Samsung, klein genoeg om als ketting om je nek te hangen:

Bij Real World Tech is een een interessant artikel verschenen over UltraDMA Mode 5, beter bekend als ATA-100. De meeste nieuwe harde schijven en moederborden gebruiken deze standaard, maar is het nu echt zoveel beter dan ATA-66 of ATA-33? Na een serie benchmarks op twee verschillende systemen bleek dat ATA-100 niet tot nauwelijks sneller is dan ATA-66 en zelfs het verschil met ATA-33 was miniem. Als je meer snelheid van je harde schijf nodig hebt is het dus overbodig om te letten op ATA-100, je kunt beter kijken naar de dichtheid van de platters en het aantal toeren:

The main thing to remember is that the ATA/100 (100MB/s) speed ONLY applies to buffer to host transfers. That is, when the operating system can’t find the data needed in its own cache, and it is not in the controller's cache, but doesn’t need to be retrieved from the actual disk itself (the platters). A small amount of data is cached in the disk’s buffer, and that is the ONLY data that will be transferred at ATA/100 speed.

[...] So, if you want more speed using an ATA/100 hard disk, you need to wait for a 10,000-RPM (or better) IDE hard disk to see any real gain over ATA/66. Smaller & fewer platters will also help. One other thing I’ve not touched on is the effect of the operating systems disk cache. Within reason, the more memory you have, the larger the disk cache, and therefore the better the disk performance. This is one reason you see better disk benchmarks with more system memory installed.

EBN meldt dat Taiwanese bedrijven zoals Asus, GigaByte en MSI al samples hebben ontvangen van Intel's Brookdale chipset, waarmee de SDRAM moederborden voor Pentium 4 processors alvast getest kunnen worden. De release van de chipset staat gepland voor het derde kwartaal van dit jaar en Intel lijkt dus voor te liggen op schema. Wellicht betekent dat ook dat de DDR versie van Brookdale eerder verschijnt dan begin 2002, de datum die nu op de roadmap staat:

Asustek Computer Inc., Gigabyte Technology Co., Microstar International Corp. and several others have received samples of the Brookdale chipset from the CPU giant, according to Kelly Wu, country manager of the Taiwan branch of Intel Microelectronics Asia Ltd. The companies are in the process of testing the chipset on their motherboards, said a spokesman for Gigabyte.

The move indicates that Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., is aiming to introduce double-data-rate (DDR) SDRAM for the Pentium 4. Paul Otellini, senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture group, told analysts earlier this week that Brookdale for Pentium 4 will transition to DDR SDRAM "as fast as we can get it out."

OCWorkbench.com heeft een review klaar van het Iwill KK266R moederbord. Deze plank is gebaseerd op de VIA KT133A chipset, heeft een 1/6/1 AGP/PCI/ISA layout en beschikt over een onboard AMI ATA-100 IDE RAID controller. Het leukste aan de KK266R is echter dat hij in staat is om op 163MHz DDR bussnelheid te draaien! Vergeleken met overige KT133A borden een zeer goede prestatie, aangezien zij meestal niet boven de 150MHz uitkomen. Een Duron 600 moest op deze snelheid wel een lagere multiplier gegeven worden, namelijk 5 ipv 6. Het systeem bleek op 6x158MHz de beste prestaties te laten zien. Er gaan overigens geruchten dat nieuwere KT133A samples verantwoordelijk zijn voor dit extra stukje overklokbaarheid.

The mainboard and peripherals are laid out carefully on top of the Senfu Housing Kit. We did not face major problems during our setup at all. Inserted the MSI GTS2 graphics card, TingBGA PC-150 SDRAM from Kingmax and we are ready to rock n roll. It can be observed that this mainboard boots up pretty fast at 600Mhz. I changed the FSB from 100 to 133 by changing the FSB jumper and from 133 to 150 using BIOS. I am surprised that my Duron 600 week 29 POSTED at 150Mhz. This CPU only runs at 850 (8.5x100) on most boards.

When the FSB is set to 150, I am already maxmising the CPU at 150x6 = 900Mhz! Whoa! it went through the benchmarks without any problems at all. I went further, 155, and it works! I went further up to 158Mhz. 159Mhz results in AWARD BOOT LOCK.

When i changed the multiplier to 5x, I am able to run at 5x163Mhz. It broke all my previous records !! My ABIT KT7A RAID only managed to work at 150Mhz Max but this baby do it well at 158 and even 163 !!

I knew that my Duron 600 is quite limited and went out to borrow my friend's Duron week 36 which runs 10x100 on ABIT KT7 RAID before. Well, guess what I got?

10x100 no problems 1.85v
10.5x100 no problems 1.85v too

I went to test out different combinations and all these settings are OK - benchmarks all ran through properly without hang.

Duron 600 at 100Mhz FSB: 6x100, 6.5x100, 7x100, 7.5x100, 8x100, 8.5x100, 9x100, 9.5x100, 10x100, 10.5x100.

Duron 600 at 133mhz FSB: 6x133, 6.5x133, 7x133, 7.5x133, 8x133

De release van de 1,3GHz Pentium 4 processor heeft AMD blijkbaar op ideeën gebracht. In Japan is namelijk een 650MHz Thunderbird verschenen, zo vertelt OCworkbench. Wat de motivatie van AMD is om de minimale kloksnelheid van de Thunderbird met 50MHz te verlagen is onbekend, hij zou namelijk nooit met de Duron kunnen concurreren qua prijs, waardoor alleen het lagere stroomverbruik dan andere Thunderbirds overblijft. Een 650MHz Thunderbird zou overigens wel ideaal overklok-materiaal kunnen zijn, omdat in Dresden bijna alleen nog maar 1GHz cores geproduceerd worden :

Frank Everaardt van Hardwareinfo.net heeft eens een kritische blik geworpen op de MSI K7T Pro2 en Pro2A. Deze Socket A KT133 plankjes hebben zich inmiddels bewezen als relaxte printplaten, aangezien ze allebei een stabiel en goed overklokbaar platform voor de Athlon en Duron zijn. Het verschil tussen beide modellen is niet groot, het zit hem puur in de gebruikte south bridge. Bezitters van ATA-100 schijven kunnen daarom het beste voor de Pro2A gaan, vanwege de VIA686B chip. Hieronder wat gepaste uit de conclusie, de rest van de review staat hier.

MSI heeft haar werk enorm goed gedaan, want vrijwel alle zwakke punten van de voorganger van deze twee borden behoren tot het verleden. Zo is er nu voldoende ruimte voor een koeler en zijn er enorm veel overklokmogelijkheden. Het begint al met de makkelijke Fuzzy Logic-software, maar ook in het BIOS is voldoende te vinden zoals multiplier wijziging, maar liefst 33 FSB-snelheden en ruime instelmogelijkheden voor de spanning.

De keuze tussen de twee vrijwel gelijke moederborden is een persoonlijke. Zelf zou ik meteen voor de 2A gaan, voorzien van de Ultra 100 IDE-controller en de drie tientjes prijsverschil probleemloos betalen. Wie niet meteen een supersnelle schijf op het bord wil onderbrengen kan prima uit de voeten met het goedkopere model. De snelheidswinst is in de meeste gevallen – zelfs als een Ultra 100-harde schijf wordt toegepast - uitermate klein.

MSI heeft een knap staaltje werk verricht en dat mag naar onze mening beloond worden. De borden zijn de beste keuze voor wie op zoek is naar een degelijk Socket A moederbord zonder extra RAID-controller aan boord. Helaas is de KT133 aan het einde van zijn Latijn, daarom kunnen we het goud en zilver niet meer laten blinken en moeten we de tweeling laten gaan met een bronzen waardering.

Bij Gamers Depot is een review neergestraald van de Philips 107T21 17" monitor. Deze CRT monitor heeft 'Real Flat' beeldbuis en beschikt over een LightFrame feature waardoor hij een erg helder en scherp beeld kan vertonen, althans voor een shadow mask monitor dan. Zijn maximale resolutie is helaas niet bijsterend hoog te noemen, maar in 1152x876 @ 75Hz valt nog vrij aardig te werken. Overall toch een vrij goede monitor voor zijn prijs, aldus deze conclusie:

Although the Philips 107T21 is a little more expensive than some other 17” monitors with street pricing coming in around $235, I haven’t seen a 17” monitor with all the features this has at this price. With a flat-front CRT, the excellent brightness and contrast, and the LightFrame feature, this monitor is packed full of goodness.

The 107T21 would be just fine for those looking for a good, yet fairly inexpensive monitor for general use, and since the thing weighs just over 30 pounds, it’s wouldn’t be that inconvenient to haul around to your next LAN party (as long as the scan rate issue didn’t bother you). If I wasn’t already addicted to large monitors, this 17” would be a good choice, although I wouldn’t mind trying out the other monitors in the Philips stable.

De nerds van I Am Not A Geek vonden het nodig om uit te zoeken wat een GeForce2 MX kaart nog presteert als hij beschikt over slechts 16MB geheugen. Het exemplaar in kwestie was een bewerkte VisionTek met origineel 32MB RAM, maar Asus levert kant-en-klare 16MB'ers. Dat je die niet wilt hebben wordt duidelijk uit onderstaande grafiekjes, de performance is soms bijna gehalveerd:

Most of you were probably unaware there was such thing as a 16MB GeForce2 MX, and some of you may be skeptical, but there is the proof. We all know the 32MB GeForce2 is limited by its memory bandwidth, so only having half the memory on the card, is probably not going to be so great. The last cards to come with cards to come with 16MB of RAM were the Voodoo 3's and we all know by today's standards their performance isn't so hot. The 16MB GeForce2 MX should still out perform them, especially at low resolutions because the core is much better, but it is still going to have to deal with memory bandwidth problems.

You can see from the marks above the 16MB GeForce2 is performs much slower then the 32MB version, especially in 32-bit. At 1280x1024x32-bit the 16MB GeForce2 MX would run the demo but about 90% of the textures would disappear and go black after a few seconds in. When I set I tried 1600x1200 just the menu part of quake was running so slow that it took me about 2 minutes to exit out of Quake 3.

Virtual Hideout heeft eens gekeken naar de Thermal Monitoring Drive Rack van Enermax. Dit apparaatje is in feite een 5.25" harddrive rack met 2 thermal sensors ingebouwd, die je op willekeurige plaatsen in je PC kunt aanlsuiten. Het design zit verder ook handig in elkaar, want het is mogelijk om er eenvoudig 80mm fans aan te bevestigen. Vast en zeker een leuk hebbedingetje voor de gemiddelde tweaker :

Now with this unit comes a few possibilities for uses. The unit slides perfectly into a 5.25" bay in any computer and is almost as long as an average cd-rom drive (you'll see that in a minute). Now, besides monitoring any piece of hardware in your computer, this unit can also act as a couple of other things . You can use it to move some more air in your case by putting either 1 or 2 80mm fans right into the rack itself. There is little stubs that are specifically made to house a couple 80mm fans. Its a screwless way to do it since they snap right onto the tabs. Obviously you wouldn't put two fans in this rack if the rack was jammed between two cd-rom sized drives since it wouldn't move any air at all and probably burn out your fans. But if it was in the bottom 5.25" bay ,and had a little breathing room under it, it would do nicely to move some air around. It wont exhaust the air just move it around. So keep that in mind if you "think" you're gonna cool your machine with this.

If you've got a open 5.25" bay then get this unit! This things will spruce up any computer to look like you've got some sensitive internals and should impress the friends alittle along the way.Plus, It's as functional as it is cool. Probably the most used setup for the two thermal sensors will be your CPU and your Video Card. But, there's endless possibilites. one for cpu and one for ambient case temp, one for video and one for hard drive,etc,etc.....

I highly recommend this unit for its quality build, functionality,reasonable price (a mere $19), and just plain good looks.

Het volk van Storage Review heeft eens gekeken naar de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60. Deze 7200rpm ATA-100 harddisk is verkrijgbaar in versies van 10 tot 60GB en beschikt over 2MB cache en een seektime van 8.7ms. Het geteste 60GB exemplaar beschikte over 3 platters van elk dik 20GB. Over het geluidsniveau en de hitteproductie was de reviewer erg tevreden, maar helaas kon hij net niet tippen aan zijn Western Digital concurrent:

Idle noise is virtually non-existent and should be inaudible over all but the quietest of power supply fans. During heavy activity, seek noise is audible, though unobtrusive. The drive runs cool to the touch after extended heavy use.

Overall, the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 provides formidable competition to the Western Digital Caviar WD400BB when it comes to WinBench performance. Unfortunately, the DM+60's regression in IOMeter scores means it has no chance in keeping up with the WD. To Maxtor's credit, the DM+60 is available in capacities of up to 60 gigs, something matched only by the Quantum Fireball Plus AS (along with the older-generation IBM Deskstar 75GXP). It is, as a result, a drive to consider if you're looking for more than 40 gigs. If not, however, Western Digital's offering is probably a better solution.

Volgens de wazige bronnen van The Register is de kopieerbeveiling die sinds build 2410 van Windows Whistler aanwezig is niet zo bijster moeilijk uit te schakelen. Het besturingssysteem maakt gebruik van een cd-key en een zelf gegenereerde code n.a.v. de hardware die in het systeem zit. Met behulp van een paar simpele handelingen en wat spelen met regedit is dit echter betrekkelijk eenvoudig te omzeilen, iets wat voor veel mensen waarschijnlijk niet echt een shock zal zijn . Het is natuurlijk aannemelijk dat Microsoft nog zal gaan sleutelen aan de procedure, maar The Reg verwacht dat kort na de release gekraakte versies niet lang zullen uitblijven. De enigen die dan onnodig hinder zullen ondervinden van de beveiliging zullen eerlijke consumenten zijn . Hieronder een hap uit het artikel, lees hier meer info.

Whistler's copy protection is by no means uncrackable, according to various of The Register's shady sources. The hardware-locked key system currently shipping with the Whistler beta seems to be fairly easy to get around, and the inconvenience of the system - if it ships with the production Whistler - will be likely to encourage the widespread use of cracks, and even of doctored installation disks that are entirely unlocked.

Basically, the protection is circumventable with just a little bit of detouring and a regedit. Microsoft no doubt knows this, but is presumably banking on most users going along with the process, as they've tended to do in the past. But as we say, the inconvenience factor may well change the ratios.

And another thing worth considering - granted ordinary users who've paid for the software will tend to just go through the process as specified by Microsoft, but who are the people most motivated not to? That's right, it's the pirates the system is supposed to be tackling. Pirates will make it their business to know how to rip off the protection and burn the software onto modified install CDs, which they'll then sell cheap. If the protection isn't very good - which it isn't - then they don't have any more trouble with it than before, so Microsoft hits the honest punters, misses the target entirely, and maybe co-opts the people in the middle into the twilight zone of legality.

So friends, is this system really intended to tackle piracy at all? Isn't it perhaps more plausible to think of the objective as being to enforce universal registration of Microsoft products with Microsoft?

IDG WebWereld schrijft in dit bericht dat UPC een prijsverhoging heeft voorspeld voor de diensten die zij aanbiedt. Tijdens een presentatie meldde de kabelboer zich te willen herpositioneren in de markt en minder aandacht te willen besteden aan haar internetactiviteiten. In 2002 moeten de maandelijkse kosten gehalveerd zijn, in een poging om zo het bedrijf weer winstgevend te maken:

UPC gaat zich herpositioneren en heeft besloten minder aandacht te besteden aan haar internetactiviteiten. UPC maakte dit bekend tijdens een presentatie. De uitrol van digitale televisie verloopt niet geheel volgens plan. Dit wordt nu maar in twee landen geïntroduceerd in plaats van de verwachte vijf.

UPC verwacht dat de prijzen voor de diensten die het aanbiedt verhoogd zullen worden. Financieel directeur Charlie Bracken denkt dit te kunnen doen aangezien UPC nauwelijks last heeft van concurrentie.

De prijsverhoging moet extra geld in het laatje brengen. Op die manier wil UPC de maandelijkse uitgaven terugdringen. Die uitgaven wil het kabelbedrijf terugbrengen van 250 miljoen euro naar 150 miljoen euro per maand. In 2002 moet deze kostenpost verder omlaag gebracht worden naar 125 miljoen euro. Deze maatregelen moeten het bedrijf sneller winstgevend maken.
