Vortex of Sound heeft een update gepost over de situatie bij het failliete Aureal. Zoals eerder bericht, is Guillemot nog steeds de meest waarschijnlijke kandidaat voor een overname van het bedrijf. Naast Guillemot willen ook Creative en 3dfx een bod doen, maar nVidia houdt zich tot dusver afzijdig:

• Guillemot is still the leading bidder for the IP and assets of Aureal. Their bid was $8 million.
• According to court filings, Guillemot will take over part of the Aureal building in Fremont as part of the purchase; Aureal has asked permission to rent the rest of the building to Centillium.
• Creative has placed a competing bid of $11 million for all the items Guillemot wants, but only if the remaining lawsuits are withdrawn.
• 3dfx may also have made an objection in court yesterday, wanting time to make a bid for the technology as well.
• Nvidia has not made a bid, nor do any reports we have heard indicate they will do so. (The X Box will not have A3D as many had hoped.)

Floris Itsme schrijft dat Matthew Witheiler van Anandtech een review geschreven heeft over de VisionTek GeForce2 MX. Deze kaart is de budget kaart onder de GeForce2 MX budget kaarten: 7ns SDRAM, geen fan of heatsink, geen drivers en ook geen handleiding. De laatste 2 punten zullen de meeste tweakers koud laten, maar de eerste twee punten zijn niet fijn voor overclockers. Dit alles te samen maakt deze kaart wel mooi goedkoop, voor slechts 108 dollar mag je hem al mee naar huis nemen, 40 dollar minder dan een gemiddelde GeForce2 MX :

So which type of card to choose? Well, it all depends on you. If your budget is very tight, and $108 sounds like a pretty good price for a video card (and you are not wrong), than the VisionTek could very well be the best card for you. With mounting holes for a fan, one can always decided to slap on an active cooling solution for even better core overclocking. Changing the memory, however, is not quite as easy. In addition, if you are not concerned with overclocking your video card at all, the VisionTek GeForce2 MX makes a whole lot of sense.

If you have the money to spare, and the $40 dollars or so more that a card with cooling and better memory will cost you will not hurt too much, perhaps you should go with one of the performance budget cards. Overclocking the memory is key to utilizing the full power of the GeForce2 MX and one of the ways to ensure better overclockabilty is to go with a card that uses faster memory.

All in all, budget system owners are finally in a unique position. No longer must one suffer with outdated technology in a budget card, but the VisionTek GeForce2 MX provides both speed for the system and ease on the wallet.

Onze Duitse vrienden van Heise Online schrijven dat Intel een .PDFje heeft gereleased waarin op pagina 17 de groottes van de L1, L2 en L3 cache van de Itanium bekend worden gemaakt. De processor blijkt te beschikken over 32KB L1 4-way set associative L1 cache, verdeelt in 16KB data en 16KB instructie cache. De L2 cache is 96KB groot en 6-way set associative. Het off-chip L3 cache heeft een omvang van 2 of 4MB en is middels een 128-bit breed datapad met de processor verbonden. McKinley, de opvolger van de Itanium, heeft naar verwachting grotere L1 en L2 caches:

In einem auf seiner FTP-Site verfügbaren Update der Itanium Processor Microarchitecture Reference macht Intel nun offiziell Schluss mit dem Rätselraten um die Cache-Größen des 64-bittigen Itanium-Prozessors. Wie bereits im c't- Prozessorgeflüster vermutet, ist der L2-Cache auf nur 96 KByte beschränkt und die beiden L1-Caches müssen sich mit jeweils 16 KByte begnügen – wie beim alten Pentium-II/III. Um die für einen 64-Bit-Prozessor doch arg kleinen integrierten Caches halbwegs auszugleichen, besitzt Itanium ein sehr schnelles 128-bittiges L3-Cache-Interface und 2 oder 4 MByte L3-Cache auf dem Modul. Für den Nachfolger McKinley werden deutlich größere L1- und L2-Caches erwartet.

Volgens Paul Thurrot's WinInfo werkt Microsoft momenteel samen met het Israelische softwarebedrijf Mainsoft en een groep developers uit Frankrijk aan een Linux port van een aantal Windows applicaties. Het porten van deze software blijkt moeizaam te verlopen omdat de programma's veelvuldig gebruik maken van Windows en Microsoft API's, waardoor allerlei workarounds moeten worden gelegd. De Linux ports hebben overigens tot doel om Linux gebruikers naar het Windows platform te lokken :

The rumors pop up occasionally, but this time it turns out they're true: Microsoft is working closely with a company called Mainsoft to port its Windows applications to open source operating system Linux and, possibly, other versions of Unix. Ome Tom heeft een review bij elkaar geschreven van de SUMA GeForce 2 GTS met 64 Mb DDR-RAM. De kaart is een mooie middenweg tussen de "normale" GeForce 2's en de onlangs uitgebrachte (doch onbetaalbare) GeForce 2 Ultra. Om de geheugen bottleneck te verminderen is deze kaart voorzien van 5,5 ns 200 MHz DDR-geheugen (400 MHz effectief), tegen 166 MHz (333 MHz) voor de normale GeForce 2. De core is geklokt op de normale 200 MHz. Met deze uitrusting weet de kaart zeer goede scores neer te zetten: met 92,8 fps in Quake 3 demo 001 op 1024x768x32 bits scoort hij 15% hoger dan een gewone GeForce 2.

Verder is de SUMA voorzien van een TV-out, een DVI-output en een flinke heatsink. Prijs voor dit moois: 300 dollar, en dat is toch flink minder dan de idiote 500 dollar die een GeForce 2 Ultra moet kosten. Het enige echte nadeel van de SUMA is het ontbreken van een goede overklok-utility.

SUMA's GeForce2 GTS 64MB SE solution is a hopeful solution to the high-end gamers that are feeling the memory limitations of today's GeForce2 GTS products and who are unwilling to pay $500 for the upcoming GeForce 2 Ultra. bij Thresh's FiringSquad is vandaag een review online gezet van de Abit's KT7 KT133 Socket A moederbord met 6xPCI, 1xAGP, 1xISA en ATA-100 en RAID support. Het plankje wist wederom goed te scoren op overklokbaarheid; een Athlon 850 liep dankzij een bussnelheid van 111MHz stabiel op 1030MHz. dEjAvU bezorgde ons het bericht dat er nog 1 laatste driver release voor de Monster Sound en Sonic Impact zit aan te komen, waarna de ontwikkeling volledig zal stoppen. De garantie en technische support zal echter nog wel voor de volle 3 jaar gehandhaafd blijven.

Dave van Computernerd stuurde ons de press-release van hun nieuwe Socket A koeler, speciaal ontworpen voor de Asus A7V. Deze werkelijk monsterlijk grote heatsink is voorzien van 2 fans met een capaciteit tot totaal 76 CFM (cubic feet per minute). Het contactvlak met de core is gemaakt van koper om een betere warmtegeleiding te bewerkstelligen. Als extra is nog een extra set verkrijgbaar om de KT133 chip op het moederbord zelf te koelen en aan een peltier-versie wordt gewerkt:

Aangezien de grond al behoorlijk vol zit met allerlei kabels, heeft de KPN weer iets nieuws bedacht. Het bedrijf is van plan glasvezelkabels in het riool te gaan aanleggen. Een proef die volgende maand gaat plaatsvinden moet uitwijzen of het gebruikelijke mengsel van afvalwater en menselijke ontlasting / uitwerpselen nog wel door de buizen kan blijven stromen:

De grond ligt al vol kabels, dus wijken KPN en de gemeente Amsterdam uit naar het riool. Op 25 september leggen ze bij wijze van proef 5,5 kilometer glasvezelkabel door Amsterdamse rioolbuizen. De gemeente stelt haar buizen ter beschikking en KPN betaalt een miljoen voor de aanleg van de kabel.

De Amsterdamse Dienst Waterbeheer en Riolering (DWR) kwam op het idee na lezing van een artikel over Japanse overheden over aanleg van telefoonkabels in riolen. Telecombedrijven waren aanvankelijk niet geïnteresseerd. Maar KPN gaf vorig jaar toch aan interesse te hebben.

Maar de proef begint met een kabel. DWR wil achterhalen of afvalwater en drek ongestoord door het riool kan blijven stromen en er niks blijft hangen aan de klemmen of mantelbuis van de kabel.

KPN wil uiteraard weten of signalen ongestoord door de kabel gaan. Het telecombedrijf hoopt daar na drie tot vijf maanden iets over te kunnen zeggen. Volgens een woordvoerder zijn proeven van het Duitse Alcatel hoopgevend.

Bij The Register hebben ze uit 'betrouwbare' bron vernomen dat AMD in januari 2001 zal beginnen met het leveren van 1,5 GHz Athlons. Helaas is dit net na de feestdagen, dus zullen Sinterklaas en de Kerstman ons niet met een 1,5 GHz Athlon gelukkig kunnen maken.

Very reliable sources have confirmed that AMD will push a 1.5GHz Athlon out of the door of its Dresden fab at the beginning of next year.

The speed rev is possible now, but AMD wants to ensure that it sells enough Athlons between now and Christmas to ensure its new tradition of posting profitable quarters continues unabated.

This year has been an annus mirabilis for AMD, as its plans to put Intel on the pricing and performance hop have so far paid off.

Short of a disaster such as an earthquake or a general conflagration, its Dresden plant is ramping speeds in excess of 950MHz and above.

However, the same sources said that AMD has to be very careful it doesn't put all its golden eggs in one basket, which is why senior suits, such as Hector Ruiz and Jerry Sanders III are making frantic efforts to find a location for a new fab.

3D GPU schrijft dat er een probleem bestaat tussen de Detonator 3 drivers en de Via KT133 chipset. Als je de bezitter bent van deze combinatie krijg je een zwart beeld met wat rare patronen er op. De oplossing voor dit probleem is er ook al: het uitzetten van Fast Writes is alles wat je moet doen volgens 3D GPU:

Just wanted to let everyone know that NVIDIA has acknowledged that there is a problem with their new drivers and people who are using motherboards with the VIA KT133 chipset. The problem arises when you install the new drivers, you won't be able to get into Windows, and/or receive garbage onscreen. NVIDIA says it's an issue with the KT133 chipset, and are looking into this right now as we speak. Some users report that disabling Fast Writes helps alleviate this problem. I'll keep you guys posted on this issue.

Note: Many of you are writing in asking if there's a way to do it without disabling Fast Writes. Well Fast Writes does NOT increase performance, at least not in this day and age. Maybe later when games uses more texture memory, it will. Your best bet is to just leave it disabled, you aren't losing anything if you do.

Zoals redelijk algemeen bekend is zitten er een hoop bugs in het alom geliefde besturingssysteem Windows. Dankzij bugzoeker George Guninski uit Bulgarije kunnen we weer een nieuwe insect aan de lange lijst toevoegen. Dit keer betreft het een fout in Internet Explorer vanaf versie 5, waardoor ongewenste personen toegang kunnen krijgen tot het Windows-systeem van de IE5-gebruiker:

De kwetsbaarheid doet zich volgens Guninski voor als via Microsoft Networking opgeroepen folders worden bekeken als webpagina's. Dat kan gedaan worden bij Microsoft Windows 98 en het is de standaardinstelling in Windows 2000.

Guninski gaf dinsdag een beveiligingswaarschuwing uit, zo schrijft CNet. Volgens de bugjager kunnen computeraars die IE 5.0 of hoger voor Windows 98 gebruiken een bestand ontvangen dat niet-geautoriseerde personen toegang geeft tot hun computer.

Het bekijken van een lokale of externe folder zou genoeg zijn om getroffen te worden door het lek, net zoals bij de meest recente lekken het bezoek aan een website of het bekijken van een HTML-mailtje voldoende was. Bij systemen die een schadelijke folder door een firewall openen is er volgens Guninski geen gevaar.

Emerce heeft vandaag te melden dat er een nieuwe internetsite is waar bedrijven en particulieren voor maar 25 gulden per jaar een domein kunnen registreren. Voor zo'n laag bedrag krijg je echter niet een normaal .nl-adres, maar zal je site terecht komen op www.blabla.nl.vg. Overigens wordt er gebruik gemaakt van het principe dat een domein aan de eerste persoon wordt weggegeven die langskomt. Wie weet gaat dit weer wat rechtszaken opleveren, aangezien iedereen nu domeinen kan registreren die bedrijven ook willen hebben:

Een viertal Zeeuwse ondernemers is vanochtend een dienst gestart die het voor particulieren mogelijk maakt om domeinnamen te registreren. Mits die particulier er geen bezwaar tegen heeft dat achter zijn naam de toevoeging .vg staat. Duur zijn de namen in ieder geval niet: één domein kost 25 gulden per jaar.

De ondernemers hebben de naam nl.vg laten registreren, en plakken daar willekeurig welke naam voor, terwille van de particulier. Vg staat voor de Amerikaanse Virgin Islands, volgens de Zeeuwen de enige extensie in de wereld waar nog .nl voor kon komen te staan. De rest is door het bedrijfsleven geclaimd.

Martijn [LnX] schrijft: "De door hackers veelgeplaagde hostingprovider Freehosting ligt zwaar onder vuur van hackers/crackers op het netwerkevenement ne2000. Grote delen van de dinsdag en woensdagnacht deden de CGI-parsers het niet en misschien moeten komende week ook de FTP servers down. Freehosting zegt deze nogal stevige FTP en CGI downtimes te kunnen rechtvaardigen want "gezien het karakter van het event is dit de enige manier om in te kunnen staan voor de integriteit van onze systemen." Oftewel: ze staan machteloos tegen het anarchistische karakter van ne2000 en lijken te berusten in verdediging en een excuus aan de klanten":

15 augustus 2000 - Overlast door krakers: Hedenochtend zijn vanaf het Networking Event 2000 (www.ne2000.nl) diverse pogingen ondernomen om het serverpark van Freehosting.nl binnen te treden. Deze pogingen zijn nog steeds gaande en gedurende dit evenement (dus t/m 19 augustus) kunnen wij vooralsnog niet garanderen dat alle normaal aangeboden services (zoals FTP, CGI-BIN) tot uw beschikking staan. Wij zijn door deze overmachtsituatie genoodzaakt maatregelen te nemen om het serverpark optimaal te beschermen. Gezien het karakter van het event is dit de enige manier om in te kunnen staan voor de integriteit van onze systemen. Onze oprechte excuses voor de tijdelijke overlast, we doen er uiteraard alles aan om de ongemakken te beperken.

Planet Hardware kon niet achter blijven in het GeForce2 Ultra geweld van de afgelopen twee dagen en heeft een eigen GeForce2 Ultra overclocking guide in elkaar geknutseld. De 4,4ns DDR chips van het exemplaar dat door Planet Hardware werd gepijnigd, kon tot een 8% hogere memclock van 500MHz overgeklokt worden. In de Quake III benchmarks was de opgevoerde GF2 Ultra op 1600*1200@32-bit bijna 15% sneller, dus blijkbaar heeft het omhoog krikken van de core snelheid wel degelijk zin bij de de GeForce2 Ultra:

The core did seem able to go slightly further than 300MHz when extremely cooled though, but not in a stable manner. Had we added an active solution like a 72-watt peltier it's likely our card could attain and hold a core speed of 310 to 320MHz as long as we were willing to give up three to four PCI slots due to the height of the heatsink, and guarantee good ventilation for the heatsink to dissipate heat.

For the DDR SDRAM however, no amount of additional cooling would enable our card to hit speeds beyond 500 to 505MHz. While we had perfect stability and no visual problems at 500MHz, setting the memory to 505MHz produced immediate lockups and grossly distorted graphics that rivaled the best impressionist paintings we've seen in museums. In other words, games would be unplayable with this much corruption.
