De luitjes van Tresh's FiringSquad kunnen er geen genoeg van krijgen: voor de derde keer een FSAA GeForce2 vs. V5 5500 artikel. In dit artikel worden de nieuwste drivers, namelijk nVidia's Detonator 5.22 en 3dfx's V1.1 drivers voor de Voodoo5 gebruikt. De conclusie van het vorige artikel was dat 2xFSAA er op de GF2GTS beter uitzag dan op de Voodoo5. Dit keer is die conclusie niet veranderd, al is er wel iets aan toegevoegd: FSAA onder D3D met de GeForce2 is nog niet echt aan te raden (langzaam).

We had a very recurring theme in these tests. The GF2 took all the OpenGL comparisons by slightly better FSAA performance. When you try to judge FSAA performance, you notice that both cards have their strengths at certain angles. The jaggies were a little smaller and crawling was slightly less on the GF2 with OpenGL running. This comparison was a fairly close call. Close but consistent, every OpenGL test resulted in the GF2 having slightly better performance. When it came to D3D there was no confusion. Performance was far superior on the Voodoo.[break]Op 4xFSAA-gebied is de Voodoo5 absoluut koning:[/break]The 4x comparison wasn't even a contest. The Voodoo 5 simply owned. There was very little doubt in our minds as to which card had the best FSAA in the 4x tests.

Hilbert Hagedoorn van Guru3D schreef mij dat hij op zijn site een mooie 'How to setup your own LAN party'-guide gepost heeft. Eerst de technische details die de meeste tweakertjes wel kennen (hoe zet ik snel een netwerk op, etc.) volgt een stukje over de LAN etiquette:

Mister Freeze schrijft dat NFS Xtreme een 'mooi' voorbeeld heeft wat er kan gebeuren als je bezig gaat met extreme koeling, daar stopte de pomp van hun Senfu Watercooler Unit met werken wat resulteerde in een gefrituurde CPU :

KILLERkraan liets ons weten dat Rivastation benchmark resultaten van de 3D Prophet II GTS 64MB online heeft gemikt. De kaart blijkt default op 220/386MHz core/mem geklokt te zijn. Dankzij het extra geheugen en de agressieve kloksettings is de 64MB versie vooral op hoge resoluties beduidend sneller dan de 32MB variant:

SCSI en nog een paar andere oplettende tweakers lieten ons weten dat er in de VS weer eens een email virus uitbraak wordt gemeld. Dit keer gaat het om mailtjes met subject 'Resume-Janet Simons', waarvan het attachement bij opening je harddisk kan trashen. Zoals gewoonlijk is het virus ook zo vriendelijk om meteen het complete Outlook adressenbestand op de hoogte te brengen... Voor de tweakers die een beetje helder bij geest zijn, is er dus weinig gevaar:

The virus, similar in makeup to the notorious Melissa virus, is carried in a file attached to an email with the subject "Resume - Janet Simons." The attachment is a Microsoft Word file called "EXPLORER.DOC" or "RESUME.DOC," according to an alert posted on the Web site of computer security company Network Associates.

Network Associates as of this morning classified the virus as "medium on watch," according to the company's Web site.

If a computer user opens the attachment, the virus will spread itself by sending an email to everyone in the user's email address book, the company said. When the user closes the Word document, the virus will then delete important files on the user's computer.

Maximum PC meldt dat mobobakker MSI vrijwel meteen bij de release van de AMD Thunderbird een plank met de VIA KT133 chipset klaar zal hebben liggen. Het bord heeft 6 PCI slots en biedt space voor 3 DIMM reepjes:

MSI's K7T Pro will will feature AGP 4x, ATA-66, six PCI slots and support for PC133 and VC133 memory. The four-layer design board will of course ship with the new Socket A connector and VIA Technologies recently renamed KT133 chipset.

VIA had planned to name the chipset KZ133 but the word in German apparently has connotations of WWII concentration camps.

AMD heeft bevestigd dat er in west Australië een kleine batch met vervalste Athlons is aangetroffen (zie deze nieuwsposting van eerder deze maand). De zaak wordt op dit momemt verder door AMD onderzocht:

"AMD has confirmed that a single small batch of remarked Athlon processors was detected in Western Australia. The company believes it has recovered all of the remarked chips and is continuing a full investigation into the incident.

VIA heeft zijn verontschuldigingen aangeboden voor de naamgeving van de KZ133 chipset, die nogal gevoelig lag in Duitsland en omringende landen. De initialen 'KZ' werden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de Nazi's gebruikt als aanduiding voor concentratiekampen (Konzentrationslager). Zoals je donderdag reeds hebt kunnen lezen heeft VIA de naam van zijn Socket A Athlon chipset veranderd in 'KT133':

Taiwan's VIA Technologies said today it is renaming its forthcoming Apollo KZ133 chipset because of concerns over the initials KZ, which were the German initials used to identify concentration camps during the Holocaust.

[...] "We have decided to rename our Socket A chipset the VIA Apollo KT133 in response to concerns raised by customers in Germany and other European markets," said VIA marketing director Richard Brown. "We would like to express our sincere apologies for any offence that we may have caused through the use of the term 'KZ' and thank everyone who provided us with their feedback and comments."

Vincent Vega stuurde ons een linkje naar dit artikel van New Scientist, over een voormalige ingenieur van de britse defensie die een chip heeft ontwikkelt waarmee de signalen van een DVD zonder kwaliteitsverlies naar de Serial Digital Interface van een plasma scherm of video projector gestuurd kunnen worden. DVD maakt gebruik van MPEG-2 compressie met een bitrate van 3 tot 10Mbps, maar om digitaal kopiëren tegen te gaan worden deze signalen door de huidige DVD spelers altijd analoog naar buiten gepoept. Het bedrijf van onze britse vriend bouwt bestaande DVD spelers om. Voor 10.000 pond kan een setje met 107cm Plasma scherm en getweakte Pioneer DVD speler besteld worden:

Flat-panel plasma screens and digital video projectors work best if they are fed a pure digital signal. Most have an input socket called a serial digital interface (SDI). This is an interface used by broadcasters to carry video at data rates up to the 270 megabits per second needed for uncompressed studio-quality pictures. To prevent digital copying, DVD players and digital TV receivers only have low-quality analogue video outputs, which has made it impossible to connect them to the high-resolution screen's SDI input.

But now David Garrett, who was formerly an engineer with Britain's Ministry of Defence, has developed a custom microchip which takes MPEG-2 data from a DVD or digital TV receiver and converts its into a high-quality 10-megabits-per-second video signal. Garrett's company, Function Communications of Chelsea, fits these chips and SDI sockets to off-the-shelf DVD players or digital TV receivers, so that they can connect to the SDI input on a plasma screen

Een groepje server fabrikanten, bestaande uit onder andere Compaq, Dell, HP, IBM, Intel en Sun, bereiden de voltooiing van de Inifiniband standaard. Infiniband wordt de opvolger van de aloude PCI standaard, die in zijn snelste en meest recente incarnatie een maximale bandbreedte van 1GB/s heeft. Infiniband fietst hier met 0,5 tot 6GB/s ruimschoots overheen. De nieuwe standaard zal niet alleen als interne I/O bus gebruikt worden, maar kan ook ingezet worden om systemen onderling aan elkaar te klussen:

De specificaties die nu voor Infiniband worden opgesteld, gaan uit van een variabele snelheid tussen 500 MB per seconde en 6 GB per seconde. Bij een 'throughput' die uit zal komen op 2,5 GB per seconde, zal het in de toekomst bovendien mogelijk zijn om tot maximaal 64.000 separaat adresseerbare Intel-servers en geheugensystemen in één netwerk op te nemen.

Een belangrijk voordeel dat de fabrikanten van servers hiermee kunnen realiseren, is het terugdringen van de noodzaak om met name aparte en extern gekoppelde communicatiesystemen als switches toe te moeten passen. Via Infiniband zou een aanzienlijk deel van deze netwerkfunctionaliteit in het I/O-systeem zelf kunnen worden opgenomen.

Volgens de roadmap van de Infiniband Trade Organisation komen de eerste Inifiniband produkten eind 2001 op de markt:

Elefino passde ons een linkje naar de Automatiserings Gids, die schrijft dat de printermaffia door inktcartridge-navuller Cartink wordt beschuldigd van machtsmisbruik. Volgens Cartink proberen printerfabrikanten met alle middelen de lucratieve markt voor inktcartidge navullingen dicht te timmeren, waardoor navullers zoals Cartink zich ernstig in hun activiteiten beperkt zien worden. Vooral Hewlett-Packard wordt als Grote Boeman gezien:

Directeur Huub Smets van Cartink trekt van leer tegen de producenten van afdrukkers in het pas verschenen juninummer van de Consumentengids. Hij stelt dat de fabrikanten het steeds lastiger maken een lege inktpatroon opnieuw met inkt te vullen. Hewlett-Packard is volgens Smets de grootste boosdoener, terwijl Epson en Canon hergebruik oogluikend zouden toelaten.

Zo is de nieuwe 600-serie van HP hooguit drie keer navulbaar en treden zelfs dan veel problemen op. Ook zou de fabrikant op een andere, ultrasnel drogende inkt zijn overgestapt die zelfs bij normaal gebruik "vrij veel" afdrukstoringen oplevert. Om dat weer te ondervangen heeft HP de inhoud van de cartridges gehalveerd zonder te prijs te verlagen.

Het Australische bedrijf Platypus Technology heeft een serie 'QikDrive' solid state drives aangekondigd met een maximale throughput van 110MB/s. De QikDrive is een PCI kaartje met 8 DIMM slots, waar maximaal 8GB ECC SDRAM op geprikt kan worden. Goedkoop zijn de QikDrive's niet: een exemplaar met 4GB geheugen moet 16.000 dollar opbrengen:

Heise.de meldt dat IBM een aantal nieuwe G3 varianten aangekondigd. Deze PPC 750CX en 750CXe processors hebben kloksnelheden van 350 tot 700MHz en zijn voorzien van 256KB geïntegreerd L2 cache. Bij de huidige G3's bevindt de L2 cache zich nog op een aparte dochterkaart. De processors worden geproduceerd op het 0,18micron koper-interconnect procédé van IBM en hebben een laag energieverbruik van 4 Watt, waardoor ze met name gechikt zijn voor gebruik in portable computers. Volume produktie van de 750CX en 750CXe begint in augustus of september, daarna zullen we de nieuwe G3'tjes waarschijnlijk ook in de spullen van Apple (iBook en PowerBook) terecht zien komen:

So liegt es nahe, dass sie vornehmlich für Appels Powerbooks in Frage kommen. Diese sind derzeit mit 400- und 500-MHz-G3-Prozessoren nebst 1 MByte externem L2-Cache (auf einem Modul) ausgestattet. Eigentlich hatte man Motorolas G4 mit der Multimedia-Erweiterung Altivec oder besser noch den kommenden G4e (ebenfalls mit integriertem 256-KByte-L2-Cache) als Nachfolger des G3 erwartet, doch bei typischen Notebook-Anwendungen kommt Altivec eh kaum zum Zuge. Obendrein hat Motorola offenbar Probleme mit der Herstellung schnellerer G4-Prozessoren, und von der G4e-Variante ist bislang noch weit und breit nichts zu sehen. Außerdem benötigen die G4-Prozessoren wegen der umfangreichen Altivec-Einheit deutlich mehr Strom, sodass Apple die schnelleren G3s (PPC750cx mit 350 bis 550 MHz und PPC 750cxe mit 500 bis 700 MHz) als Zwischenlösung zur Powerbook-Modellpflege sehr gelegen kommen dürften.

Netcraft heeft de webserver survey voor de maand mei online gezet. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat het aandeel van marktleider Apache met 1,09% af nam, grotendeels omdat er 90.000 nieuwe Namezero domeinen werden gevonden die op WebLogic draaien. Het aandeel van Internet Information Server bleef vrijwel gelijk, terwijl iPlanet (Netscape Enterprise) en Zeus licht stegen. Netcraft deed ook onderzoek naar de populariteit van de verschillende Linux distributies en kwam tot de conclusie dat Red Hat veruit het grootste marktaandeel heeft:

The May survey received responses from over 15 million sites. The most significant change is the discovery of around 90,000 sites run by Namezero who offer a free domain name and hosting service. Namezero is responsible for the dramatic increase in the number of sites running on WebLogic and is hosted on a Solaris based system at Exodus.

A commonly asked question is whether we can distinguish the different Linux distributions and provide some insight into their relative popularity. Our operating systems detection can distinguish the Linux kernel version, but not the specific distribution. However, many of the distributions personalise the Apache server headers in some way, and an indication can be had from that. No other distributions have more than 3%, reflecting the strenuous efforts Red Hat make to create brand identity and differentiation.
