Euro Gamer heeft een review online gesodemieterd van de Dragon-Direct DDE8, een handig apparaat wat je in een 5.25 inch bay kan gooien en wat dan je fannetjes bij een bepaalde temperatuur aan en uit kan zetten. Dit is natuurlijk erg handig als je niet iedereen weg wil jagen met een tornado geluid wat uit je kast komt of als je gewoon 1x in je leven rustig wil slapen . Een klein nadeel van deze unit is dat hij geen individuele fans kan controleren maar dat hoeft geen probleem te zijn:

Having lived with the constant hum of three 80mm case fans for nearly a year now, the asking price of £29.99 is a small amount compared with the peace I now enjoy with the fans switched off most of the time. When I quit Quake 3 the fans keep running until the temperature is down to normal, and then switch themselves off again. Heavenly.

Oh, and did I forget to mention that the LCD screen is backlit? Yes, it glows an eerie blue when powered, making the display easy to read even in low light conditions, and it looks dead impressive at LAN parties.

Op deze droge nieuwsdag zet FiringSquad een artikel online over het overklokken van een Celeron 533 FC-PGA. Hun exemplaar wist 816MHz (8 x 102MHz) te behalen waarmee de prestaties ongeveer overeen kwam met die van een Athlon 750 @ 818MHz. Hier de conclusie:

We like the FC-PGA Celeron processors. They're cheap, they overclock fairly well, and did we mention that they were cheap? Our Celeron was able to hang in there with the Athlon through most of the tests. The 816MHz overclocked speed was a bit of a disappointment, but we're pretty sure we would have been able to reach higher speeds with a little extra power. As always, keep in mind that we only tested a single processor and our results are in no way indicative of how all the 533A processors overclock.

Intel mag dan misschien net de Coppermine de eer opeisen van het snelste CPU ontwerp, maar zolang ze het niet op de markt kunnen brengen blijft AMD toch de winnaar. Weer voer voor de oplaaiende strijd tussen AMD liefhebbers en Intel fanaten?

Vrieskist schrijft dat bij Tom's Hardware Guide een flinke lap tekst staat hoe je, je systeem in de Nikao Submarine kast kan krijgen. Ook als je niet geïnteresseerd bent in deze Mac wannabe kast staat er in het artikel nog wel nuttige tekst: het is namelijk ook nog een "hoe pluur je een pc inelkaar" guide :

I admit it. I have "Mac envy." No, it's not the OS, or the G4, or Steve Jobs and it's certainly not the hype. Yes, the Mac has it's merits and it has certainly influenced the PC in many positive ways, but what I really like is the case. The Apple (nasdaq: AAPL) Power Macs have a very cool case where the motherboard back plane actually hinges outward and lies flat. In the "do it yourself" (DIY) PC world, cases are all too often the oh so bland beige metal boxes. This situation is so chronic that reviewers are left musing about the shape of the power button or the placement of the LED's on the faceplate.

[...] Although the Nikao Submarine case is not perfect, I still like it. The construction is far from the quality of the Power Mac's case; it's a bit flimsy, but if the price is right (I expect that the Submarine will be fairly inexpensive), it is worth buying for its convenience and interesting looks.

If you are thinking about purchasing this case, remember that it is not static safe and it offers nothing in the way of RF shielding. System integrators should test the case thoroughly before considering offering systems housed in it. I have not had any problems with the Submarine, but my experience with it is limited.

Chick's Hardware heeft een review online gemikt van de iPlayMP3 Moveman Portable MP3 Player. Deze player heeft een paar leuke features (CompactFlash cards, card reader) maar jammer genoeg missen er ook een paar dingen: hij kan geen ID3 tag's lezen en de headphones zijn van een niet al te hoge kwaliteit:

The player itself is not connected to the computer via a direct line or a docking station like many other players, the Moveman uses a separate unit called the RocketMP3 USB card reader, which is basically a generic CompactFlash reader. Other readers are available which connect to an IDE connector or PCMCIA slot.

This is an ingenious idea, as the player doesn't need to be on when you are storing MP3s to the card and saves the battery power on your player. The RocketMP3 draws power directly from the USB port and also since it is USB it gives transfer rates ranging from 500-800 Kbps. This basically means that an MP3 can be transferred in a few seconds, the card can be filled in under a minute.
