Bij TweakTown kun je een korte review vinden van de Epox EP-8KTA3. Dit moederbord is gebaseerd op de nieuwe VIA KT133A chipset die in tegenstelling tot zijn voorganger bussnelheden tot 266MHz ondersteunt. Verder is de 8KTA3 uitgerust met onboard RAID en is hij voorzien van een relaxte 1/6/1/4 AGP / PCI / ISA / DIMM layout. Ook op het gebied van overclocken is hij goed vertegenwoordigd; het bios geeft je de mogelijkheid tot voltage, FSB en multiplier tweaking. In de review vind je verder nog wat benchmarks van een 1GHz Athlon met een 100 en 133MHz FSB.

Overclocking on this board is easier than the other Socket A offering from Epox. On the 8KTA+ and 8KTA2 you needed to use Dipswitches to change the VIO, Vcore and multipliers. The 8KTA3 however allows multiplier, FSB, VIO and Vcore adjustments all through BIOS. One little hitch was the 133Mhz FSB setting. When we get it to 133Mhz FSB on BIOS the system would not post. We looked at the board and noticed a jumper on the board for 100MHz or 133MHz FSB, when we set this jumper to the 133Mhz FSB position the system booted fine. The stability of this board when overclocking was remarkable. Not once did we get a crash or any other glitches to show that the board was stressing, another very good point about this board.

There is no doubt about it, the 8KTA3 based on the VIA Apollo KT133A chipset is a winner, stability, reliability and overclockability are all extremely good. The only major problem with this board is the clutter around the Socket A. To improve this Epox could take a page from ASUS's book with putting the voltage regulators and capacitors onto a riser card and more it out of the way. With this said this board is the best SDRAM solution to AMD Athlon and Duron Processors.

Intel zal de opening van Fab 24 in Leixlip in Ierland een jaar uitstellen, zo schrijft CNet. Als reden wordt opgegeven dat op dit moment de markt er niet geschikt voor is en dat men wacht op nieuwere, economischer wafers. Deze fabriek kost Intel ongeveer $2 miljard en zal 15.000 vierkante meter innemen:

The fab was one of a number of construction projects announced by Intel this year as part of an aggressive capital expansion. In the first half of the year, Intel found itself losing business opportunities because demand for both microprocessors and flash memory outstripped supply.

To squelch the problem, Intel began to acquire or invest in new plants in New Mexico, Massachusetts and Colorado, among others. In the second half of the year, however, sales slowed, giving the company less incentive to open a new plant.

Delaying the plant will also let the company more aggressively gear up for 300-millimeter wafer production in 2002. These wafers, which have diameters measuring 300 millimeters rather than 200 millimeters, are far more economical from a production point of view. A single 300-millimeter wafer can produce roughly 225 percent more wafers, which leads to lower overall costs.

Wonderboy Anand heeft zijn bevindingen over de SiS730S online gezet. Deze Socket-A SDR chipset moet gaan zorgen voor een passend value platform voor de AMD Duron zodat deze CPU wat populairder kan worden in het low-end segment. De 730S maakt dan ook gebruik van een SiS 300 graphics core, ongeveer vergelijkbaar met die van de Intel 810 chipset. Daarnaast ondersteunt hij een FSB van 266MHz en wordt het IDE-subsysteem met een dedicated 133MB/sec verbonden aan de northbridge. Toch vallen de prestaties wat tegen, de 2D performance lag namelijk gemiddeld zo'n 10% lager in vergelijking met VIA's KT133. Dit als gevolg van de matig presterende memory controller. Ook de 3D performance i.s.m. een GeForce2 kaart liet helaas vaak te wensen over. VIA kan met zijn geïntegreerde KM133 chipset dus aardig wat roet in het eten gooien. The SiS 730S holds a lot of promise and it is definitely a step in the right direction, since the Duron desperately needs a highly integrated platform to run on. The motto we associated with the Duron when we first reviewed it back in June was: “value does not have to mean slow.” Unfortunately the SiS 730S seems to combat that motto quite a bit.

While we did expect lower performance in 3D applications and games out of a UMA platform like that 730S, there is still no excuse for the degraded memory performance we saw here. If you factor out the integrated graphics and use an external GeForce2 GTS card, the 730S was still 10% slower in 2D applications and up to 25% slower in 3D applications.

[...]As far as SiS is concerned, the 730S is definitely a good first attempt at a value solution for the Athlon platform. And its exactly what the OEMs have been demanding, its cost effective (just a few dollars more expensive than the i810/815E chipsets), highly integrated and has good driver support (not to mention impressive DVD performance).

Unfortunately it is taking away quite a bit of the performance advantage that the Duron originally boasted over the Celeron. It is now up to VIA to deliver a low cost yet better performing value platform for the Duron, if they can do that then SiS will be in a bit of a bind, if they cannot however, the Duron may lose quite a bit of its appeal in the retail market.

Bij OCWorkbench kun je een review lezen van het AOpen AK73 Pro KT133 mobo. Deze plank met 5xPCI, AGP, AMR en 3xDIMM bleek erg geschikt geschikt voor overclocking: een Duron 600 werd zonder moeite dmv multiplier en voltage tweaking op 900MHz gezet. De prestaties van de AK73 werden ook goed bevonden, alhoewel de KT7 niet kan worden geëvenaard. Hieronder wat meer info uit de eindconclusie:

AOPEN AK73Pro is an excellent performing board. I think this is probably due to the fact that they have spent more time doing R&D than to rush and release a problematic and bad performing product. The manual is also well written and it's one of the best manuals I have even read.

Well, in our tests, it is clearly indicative that AOPEN AK73 Pro outperforms most of the KT133 boards except for ABIT KT7 RAID and SOLTEK SL75KV2-X. Surprisingly enough, QDI Kinetiz 7T appears to have pretty good performance when we did an overall comparison, it is on par with AOPEN AX73 Pro in Winbench99 but lost out in terms of HD performance as it was using the former 686A South Bridge. It looks like the bigger brands have to do some catching up in fine tuning their products.

AOPEN might want to consider printing the jumper settings closer to the switch/jumper than to print it totally off-site. This will definitely ease the users from hunting for the manual and page for the instructions. The location of the Power connector might block larger heatsinks too.

Bij NeoSeeker hebben ze een review gemaakt van de ThermalTake Super Orb heatsink/fan. Zoals bekend is deze versie uitgerust met twee fans (5500rpm en 5000rpm) wat vooral resulteert in sterke prestaties bij overgeklokte procs. De installatie bleek ook niet echt moeilijk, alhoewel er nog steeds problemen zijn met borden die condensators naast de processor socket hebben (Abit KT7). Over het algemeen was men toch erg tevreden:

The Super Orb’s performance with the Duron at its default 650MHz isn’t bad, but its performance with the overclocked Duron is much better. This shows that the large heatsink is better at dissipating a lot of heat at one time, rather than dissipating a small amount of heat in a very short time. Because of this, I would suggest not purchasing a Super Orb unless you actually plan on overclocking – there are other coolers that perform equally as well and cost much less. However, if you do plan on overclocking, the Super Orb is well worth the higher price.

[...] If you haven’t figured it out by now, the Thermaltake Super Orb is huge for a socket cooler and it also looks pretty sweet, to boot. If you like the look of it but don’t want to spend so much money, the Chrome Orb may be more your style. The Chrome Orb is smaller than its “Super” cousin and it only uses a single fan. Its performance isn’t as good, but it should still be able to handle moderate overclocking.

Ondanks de geruchten dat ook de nVidia Detonator drivers zouden worden voorzien van Hidden Surface Removal bevestigt nVidia dat de huidige GeForce'en helaas niet gebruik zullen maken van deze feature. HSR zorgt ervoor dat voor de gamer onzichtbare gedeeltes niet worden gerenderd, wat erg gunstig kan uitpakken voor de framerate. 3dfx heeft dit al laten zien in de laatste Voodoo5 beta drivers, alhoewel er momenteel nog wat visuele fouten te betreuren zijn. ZDNET schrijft dat Compaq de eerste prototype computers uitgerust met PCI-X heeft gebouwd. PCI-X is de opvolger van het normale PCI en zal naast allerlei slimmig- heden ook een bandbreedte leveren van 1024MB/sec, 2x zoveel als maximaal mogelijk is met een 64-bit 66MHz PCI slot. De PCI-X prototype systemen van Compaq bieden nog niet de beloofde 1024MB/sec omdat de bus daar slechts op 100MHz loopt in plaats van de bedoelde 133MHz. Verwacht wordt dat PCI-X in het begin van 2001 de markt op wordt gezet:

Compaq Computer has released its first prototype computers to let hardware companies start testing a new connection technology called PCI-X.

PCI-X was developed by Compaq, Hewlett-Packard and IBM as a way to double the speed of the current PCI data pathway. The companies announced the technology in September 1998, and Intel eventually signed up to support it as well.

However, PCI-X is late. Compaq originally projected it would arrive in 1999. A long list of corrections has been compiled since the first version of the specification was released.

Not surprisingly, early 2001 is the most recent projected arrival date.

KPN Mobile heeft op 11 december als eerste een landelijke dekkend GPRS-netwerk in gebruik genomen. GPRS is op dit moment uitsluitend beschikbaar in combinatie met de dienst Mobile Office Online, waarmee grote bedrijven hun medewerkers mobiel toegang kunnen geven tot het bedrijfsnetwerk. Volgend jaar wil KPN meer diensten voor bedrijven en consument toevoegen. KPN wacht hiermee tot er meer GSM's verkrijgbaar zijn die overweg kunnen met het GPRS protocol.

GPRS heeft een snelheid van 26Kb/s. Niet geweldig, maar in ieder geval stukken beter dan de tamelijke trieste baudsnelheid van 9600bps waarop de huidige GSM's werken. Gebruikers zijn met GPRS altijd online, waardoor voortdurend in- en uitloggen niet noodzakelijk is:

KPN Mobile heeft op 11 december, met de dienst Mobile Office Online, zijn landelijk dekkend GPRS-netwerk in gebruik genomen. Grote bedrijven met een eigen netwerk kunnen met deze dienst hun medewerkers mobiel toegang geven tot applicaties op het eigen intranet. Met de nieuwe dienst kunnen medewerkers mobiel gebruik maken van het eigen intranet en indien gewenst van M-Info en de internetfaciliteiten van XS4ALL. De komende maanden zullen ook andere Internet Service Providers worden aangesloten op het GPRS-netwerk van KPN Mobile. IBM heeft eerder dit jaar meegedaan aan een succesvol verlopen pilot, waarbij medewerkers mobiel toegang kregen tot hun bedrijfsnetwerk. Daarbij werd aan de strenge security-eisen van IBM voldaan.

Sang Park, president van Hyundai, en Yon Woo Lee, president van Samsung, hebben in een interview met Electronic Buyers' News aangegeven dat beide bedrijven ondanks de dramatische prijsdalingen op de geheugen markt nog steeds in staat zijn om winst te draaien op de productie van DRAM chips. Volgens Hyundai bedragen de productiekosten van een 128Mbit SDRAM chip minder dan 35 dollarcent per MB. Dit is omgerekend 112 gulden voor een reepje van 128Meg en dan zijn de assemblage kosten nog niet meegeteld.

Hyundai verwacht dat de productie van DDR volgend jaar snel zal toenemen. Er wordt overwogen om RDRAMs in productie te nemen, maar uitsluitend als de prijs goed is en er vraag is op de markt. Samsung, de grootste producent van RDRAMs ter wereld, is wat genuanceerder en durft niet te zeggen hoe de productieaantallen van DDR en Rambus zich volgend jaar tot elkaar zullen verhouden. Veel hangt volgens hun af van het succes van de Pentium 4. Wat betreft de licentiekosten voor het gebruik van de SDRAM patenten van Rambus Inc. weet Samsung ons te verzekeren dat deze geen invloed hebben op de marktprijzen. De markt bepaalt de prijs en niet de fabrikant, aldus Samsung:

EBN: Samsung signed a royalty-bearing license on Rambus' SDRAM patents. Will this cause you to raise your SDRAM prices to cover the royalty costs?

Lee: The market sets the price of DRAMs, not any licensing agreements. We can't get a price higher than the market will allow.

EBN: How do you see next year's market shaping up for Direct Rambus DRAM and DDR SDRAM?

Lee: Samsung is now the leading producer of both types of memory. Right now it's difficult to estimate the relative market positions next year for DRDRAM and DDR, because it will be our customers' requirements that will determine that. We're ready to support any memory they want.

Intel's successful Pentium 4 launch [using Direct RDRAM] is a good opportunity to boost Rambus sales. A lot depends on the success of the Pentium 4. Samsung is also a Rambus supplier for the Sony PlayStation 2, sharing 50% [of Sony's Direct RDRAM purchases] with Toshiba.

EBN: Does the sharp drop in DRAM prices hurt Hyundai's profits as you are going through your restructuring?

Park: Until this fall we had a 30% increase in sales and good profit growth. The DRAM downturn will affect revenue. But we should remain a $7 billion chip operation. We can make a profit even at the current DRAM prices because we continue to reduce costs. Hyundai's large production economies of scale also help keep costs low. This year after the merger [with LG Semicon], Hyundai will produce close to 700 million 64-Mbit-equivalent DRAMs. Next year we expect to produce more than 1 billion 64-Mbit DRAM chips. This reduces our manufacturing costs significantly. [Park referred to an internal Hyundai document showing the manufacturing cost of 128-Mbit SDRAM as less than 35 cents per Mbyte, with the production cost of 256-Mbit going to less than 30 cents per Mbyte by the second half of 2001.]

Palm Inc. heeft op de PalmSource 2000 conferentie in Santa Clara een beta versie van PalmOS 4.0 uitgebracht. Met verbeteringen zoals support voor USB, 16-bit displays, Bluetooth en draadloze telefonie hoopt Palm de voorsprong op het Pocket PC platform van Microsoft te behouden. Om deze nieuwe features mogelijk te maken heeft Palm besloten om in de toekomst gebruik te maken van snelle ARM processors. Momenteel zijn de Palm handhelds nog gebaseerd op trage Dragonball chips van Motorola. De nieuwe ARM-Palms blijven backwards compatible met bestaande software.

Palm CTO Bill Mags demonstreerde de mogelijkheden van Bluetooth door zijn een mobiele telefoon draadloos via Bluetooth te laten inbellen. Verder speelde Mags een multiplayer flightsim over zijn Bluetooth link:

Palm is trying to enhance its OS to maintain its lead over Microsoft in the handheld market by selectively adding more features. One of Palm's goals is to more deeply penetrate the corporate market, which likely will mean expanding the type of applications the Palm OS can handle.

The company also is in the midst of a hardware migration. Palm has completed the initial effort to port its operating system from today's Motorola Dragonball chip, which is at the heart of current Palm handhelds, to chips based on designs from England's ARM. ARM processors run much faster than Dragonball chips and therefore will allow Palm devices to run more complex applications more smoothly.

Oak Technologies heeft gisteren de OTI-9897 CD-RW/DVD combo controller geïntroduceerd. Dit chippie kan burnen en rewriten op zestienvoudige CD snelheid en ondersteunt 8X DVD en 40X CD leessnelheden. Oak heeft onder andere een ATAPI controller, CD/DVD DSP, CD/DVD servo en CSS beveiliging in de chip ondergebracht. Deze hoge mate van integratie maakt 't mogelijk om deze controller een gecombineerde CD-RW en DVD-ROM drive in een slim line (laptop) behuizing te verpakken. De OTI-9897 ondersteunt alle DVD media, waaronder DVD-RAM, DVD-RW en DVD+RW:

Frank Everaardt van HardwareInfo.net heeft een korte review gemaakt van het eerste niet-Intel Pentium 4 moederbord. MSI is de eerste fabrikant die na de Intel reference plankjes een Pentium 4 socket 423 moederbord op de markt brengt. De MSI 850 Pro is gebaseerd op de Intel 850 chipset, en lijkt sterk op Intels reference design. Net als de i840 planken maakt ook de MSI 850 Pro gebruik van RIMM's. Verder beschikt het bord over vijf PCI sloten, een CNR en een AGP Pro connector.

Hoewel MSI zoals zo veel fabrikanten bij dit eerste Pentium 4-moederbord zich zeer duidelijk heeft gebaseerd op de techniek van de eerste referentieontwerpen van Intel is men er toch in geslaagd om een eigen kleur aan het bord mee te geven. Voorbeelden zijn het AGP Pro-slot, de slimme plaatsing van de voedingsconnectors en natuurlijk MSI’s veel geprezen diagnose-systeem D-LED.

De 850Pro is het eerste Pentium 4-moederbord dat niet afkomstig is van Intel dat Hardwareinfo.net onder handen neemt. We verwachten de komende tijd nog een aantal andere exemplaren te ontvangen en dan zullen we natuurlijk ook een complete vergelijking van deze moederborden plaatsen.

StorageReview heeft de Quantum Fireball Plus AS eens nader bekeken. Deze IDE schijf doet 7200 rondjes per minuut en heeft 20,4GB per platter, wat resulteert in een seek time van 8,5ms. Uiteraard heeft de Fireball Plus AS een ATA-100 interface. De benchmarks voor deze nieuwe Quantum schijf vallen wat tegen; de toegangstijd is zo'n 2ms hoger dan z'n voorganger. Over de real-life prestaties van deze schijf is men dan ook niet zo te spreken:

As one might expect, the Fireball Plus AS' increase in average access time yields some acoustic benefits. Seeks don't churn away like they did on the LM. This drive's subjective noise profile is in line with units from the competition. After extended use, the AS runs warm but not hot to the touch. It should work in most cases without the use of a drive cooler.

Overall, we can't help but be disappointed with the Fireball Plus AS. The Fireball Plus' SCSI heritage set high standards for this newest member… standards that the AS couldn't quite reach. Western Digital's Caviar WD400BB offers better performance with comparable noise parameters… albeit in a maximum capacity of only 40 gigs. And though the AS does offer a maximum of 60 GB, stiff competition from Maxtor, IBM, and Seagate waits right around the corner. We advise holding off until then… or, if you need a unit right away, consider leading units from IBM or Western Digital.

Uit de release notes van de nieuwe nVidia Detonator 6.49 drivers voor Windows 98 blijkt dat nVidia support voor de Micron Samurai DDR chipset heeft toegevoegd. Dit duidt erop dat we binnenkort de release van de eerste Micron chipset mogen verwachten. Een maand geleden heb je al kunnen lezen dat Micron in 2001 drie Athlon chipsets op de markt zal brengen, namelijk 'Mamba', 'Scimiter' en 'SuperGun'. Scimiter, een northbridge met geïntegreerd L3 cache, wordt als eerste gereleased in Q1 2001.

Micron demonstreerde dit jaar diverse keren de Samurai PIII chipset, als proof of concept voor de mogelijkheden van DDR SDRAM. Je kunt er vanuit gaan dat de Athlon northbridges gebruik maken van dezelfde AGP implementatie als de Samurai chipset:

• Fixed OpenGL screen corruption when FSAA is enabled.
• Fixed screen corrution at startup when changing modes from standard to clone with TwinView under Windows ME.
• Fixed corrupted shadows in Evolva when AA is forced on.
• Fixed problem in Windows 98 where you were unable to disable DesktopManager Zoom feature.
• Added support for Macrovision on CH7005/6 TV Out chip.
• Added support for Micron Samurai DDR chipset.
