3ware, fabrikant van high-end IDE-RAID controllers, gaat definitief door met de ontwikkeling, verkoop en ondersteuning van zijn Escalade kaarten. Dit is te lezen in een mededeling op de website van het bedrijf. Eerder kondigde 3ware aan dat de productie van IDE-RAID controllers werd gestaakt en dat de fabrikant zich uitsluitend zou gaan richten op IP storage. 3ware zal de vier producten uit de Escalade 7000-serie - de 7410, 7810, 7450 en 7850 - blijven produceren. De 6000-serie wordt niet voortgezet, maar zal nog wel tot 31 december van dit jaar verkrijgbaar zijn:

Tot voor korte tijd, was een grafische kaart met een Radeon GPU per definitie afkomstig van ATi. Hier is echter verandering in gekomen en dat betekent dat makers van grafische kaarten nu ook de beschikking hebben over de Radeon GPU. Een van de eerste makers, PowerMagic, brengt twee nieuwe kaarten op de markt. Een gebaseerd op de Radeon 7500 en een op de Radeon 8500 core. Digit Life was er als de kippen bij en heeft deze twee kaarten voor ons getest. Als eerste worden de kaarten visueel vergeleken met een Radeon 7500 en 8500 die afkomstig zijn van ATi. Resultaat, de kaarten zijn identiek op twee minieme details na: een PowerMagic sticker op de koeler en een extra sticker op de achterkant met een PowerMagic serie nummer. Het enige echte verschil met een originele Radeon is de klok waarop de PowerMagic kaarten draaien, 250/250Mhz voor de PowerMagic Radeon 8500 ten opzichte van 275/275Mhz voor de ATi Radeon 8500 en 250/230Mhz voor de PowerMagic Radeon 7500 ten opzichte van 290/230Mhz voor de ATi Radeon 7500. In feite gaat het dus in beide gevallen om een LE versie van de 7500 en 8500.

Omdat de PowerMagic Radeon 7500 en 8500 allebei in een ander marktsegment spelen, worden ze dus ook allebij apart getest. De PowerMagic Radeon 7500 wordt vergeleken met een GeForce2 Pro, een GeForce2 Ti en een originele ATi Radeon 7500. Daarnaast wordt hij ook nog eens overgeklokt naar 360/310Mhz. Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat de Radeon 7500 core vooral uitblinkt in 32 bits kleuren, in 16 bits kleuren moeten alle Radeon's de GeForce2 kaarten voor zich dulden. Een scenario dat we in andere reviews ook al hebben gezien.

De PowerMagic 8500 speelt in de GeForce3 klasse en wordt daarom vergeleken met een GeForce3 en een GeForce3 Ti200. Ook worden de resultaten van een overgeklokte (275/275Mhz) PowerMagic 8500 meegenomen. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat de PowerMagic Radeon 8500 goed mee kan komen met beide GeForce3 kaarten, soms is de PowerMagic Radeon 8500 een beetje sneller en soms een beetje langzamer.

Een van de sterke kanten van kaarten met een ATi grafische processor is het afspelen van DVD's. Digit Life heeft daarom het afspelen van DVD's vergeleken en ATi heeft hier een flinke voorsprong die vooral te danken is aan een beter de-interlacing algoritme. Daar tegenover staat echter een zwak punt van alle Radeon kaarten, de drivers. De drivers van ATi zijn minder volwassen dan hun nVidia tegenhangers wat het potentieel van de kaarten terughoudt. Ook zijn er soms afbeeldingsfoutjes in sommige spellen:

We have studied two video cards from ATI... or rather from PowerMagic. Bit it doesn't matter as PowerMagic sells the same boards which ship in ATI's boxes with the only difference that the PM cards work at lower frequencies. You should note also that the tests were carried out only under Windows 98/ME.

1. Both cards are, in fact, from ATI, just packed in different packages.
2. Therefore, we have no problems in 2D quality.
3. Both cards are supplied with DVI-to-D-Sub and S-Video-to-RCA adapters, that is why you will have no difficulty in displaying an image on two monitors and on a TV screen.
4. The RADEON 8500 from PowerMagic works at a lower frequency and has a poor overclocking potential, while the PowerMagic RADEON 7500 is a prominent player.
5. The RADEON 8500 looks quite attractive with the 7.206 driver, but some troubles still exist and, first of all, in games.
6. The worst drawback of the RADEON 8500 is lack of normal trilinear filtering. It is partially offset by cheap and high-quality anisotropy but only in the OpenGL. In the Direct3D it depends on applications: whether it supports anisotropy or not.
7. SmoothVision offers a flexible choice between quality and performance. But the real advantage will be given by the technology when it will be possible to change flexibly AA settings in applications (when you draw elements of the scene with different settings). Besides, such a flexible mechanism will be able to support new settings in the following driver versions or change quality and speed of operation in old ones. I also hope the performance of such AA in OpenGL will soon reach the level demonstrated in the D3D.
8. All advantages of the RADEON 7500 marked in this review are also peculiar to the PowerMagic RADEON 7500.
9. The best advantage of both cards is a low price, and first of all, I mean the RADEON 8500 which costs like GeForce3 Ti 200 based cards but has a better productivity, a dual-moitor support and a TV-out.

The Nintendo GameCube is a remarkably well designed system, both internally and out. It's tightly packed with goodness, easy to disassemble, and features many pleasing design decisions. Some things I don't understand - no RGB. It should have been readily available anyway, why not include it? Also, why doesn't the damn thing play music CDs like every other console ever made? 3" music singles are very popular in Japan, but Nintendo... Well, who knows what they were thinking? Volgens DigiTimes is de vraag naar DDR SDRAM stijgende, en in het vierde kwartaal zelfs met 25% toenemen wat gebruik in videokaarten betreft. Oorzaak hiervan zijn de toegenomen productie van nVidia en ATi, en de recentelijke introductie van de Xbox-spelcomputer van Microsoft. Tevens wordt er gemeld dat de standaard 16MB DDR-modules voor videokaarten vervangen worden door 32 en 64MB exemplaren:

Demand for DDR SDRAM used in graphics cards and game consoles has been rising lately, as companies like Nvidia and ATI Technologies have increased their output and Microsoft has started manufacturing the Xbox, DRAM makers said.

Demand for DDR used in graphics cards in the fourth quarter is expected to climb by 25% quarter-on-quarter, totaling around 60 million 128Mbit-equivalent chips. Xbox game consoles require two to three million DDR chips per month as well. Manufacturers said that the mainstream DDR modules provided for graphics cards are also shifting from 16MB products to 32 and 64MB ones.

Littlewhitedog.com brengt ons een review van het nieuwste product van Arctic Silver Inc., Arctic Alumina. Deze nieuwe thermal compound heeft een aantal voordelen boven Arctic Silver 1 en 2. Zo worden uitsluitend niet-geleidende grondstoffen gebruikt, namelijk Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) and Boron Nitride (BN). Dit zorgt ervoor dat je niet meer per ongeluk de bruggen op je CPU kan kortsluiten, iets wat met Arctic Silver wel mogelijk was. Het nieuwe prutje is daarnaast ook een stukje voordeliger dan het oude Arctic Silver, vooral omdat het dunner aangebracht moet (en kan) worden. Het goedje heeft een zeer doordachte werking. Als het aangebracht wordt is het goed smeerbaar, als het voor het eerst verhit wordt, wordt het nog iets dunner, zodat de verbinding tussen koeler en core nog beter gemaakt wordt. Tenslotte verdikt het goedje zich in de volgende 20 tot 100 uur:

De performance van het goedje is uitstekend te noemen. De temperatuur van de test-processor werd net zo laag gehouden als met Arctic Silver II. Voor de prijsbewuste tweaker wordt het goedje verkocht in een 1.75 grams tubetje. Deze moet $3.95 gaan kosten.

Ondanks de vele negatieve uitlatingen van critici, betreffende de schikking die het Ministerie van Justitie en Microsoft voorgesteld hebben aan de rechtbank, blijft de overheid achter haar standpunt staan. Hoewel men in eerste instantie een gerechtelijke oplossing wilde bereiken, zijn deskundigen nu tot de conclusie gekomen dat de zaak in dat geval nog wel twee jaar kan duren. Het leek Justitie daarom beter, om nu akkoord te gaan met een iets lichtere straf en op die manier de kwestie sneller te kunnen afronden.

Op de korte termijn is de voorgestelde regeling dus het beste, als we Justitie mogen geloven. Het zou Microsoft's illegale bezigheden stopzetten, toekomstige herhaling ervan voorkomen en de positie van concurrenten verbeteren. Om dit te bereiken zal Microsoft computerleveranciers meer vrijheid moeten geven met betrekking tot de software die deze leveren, en bovendien belangrijke onderdelen van de broncode van haar besturingssystemen aan de concurrentie kenbaar maken.

Of er ook iets van deze wensen waargemaakt zal worden moet nog blijken, aangezien de rechter zich nu over de feiten buigt. De enorme hoeveelheid klachten over de zachtzinnige aard van het voorstel hebben vanzelfsprekend effect op de beslissingen, zodat het nog niet zeker is of er akkoord gegaan zal worden met Justitie's plannen. De zaak zal dus nog wel weer een tijdje doorsudderen, zo kunnen we concluderen uit de tekst van ZDNet.

Ook bij OC Workbench vinden we een review van de MSI 645 ultra. Dit bord, gebaseerd op de SiS 645 chipset, beschikt over 5 PCI, 1 AGP en 3 DDR geheugenslots. De Sis 645 chipset is de enige die op dit moment DDR333 aankan voor de Pentium 4. Het bord van MSI beschikt over vrij fatsoenlijke overklok mogelijkheden, zoals de verhoging van de FSB met 1MHz stapjes en uitgebreide voltage aanpassingsmogelijkheden. Het bord, dat er door zijn rode kleurtje goed uitziet, presteert uitstekend. Soms loopt het zelfs de Abit TH7-II RAID (Intel i850 chipset met Rambus geheugen) eruit. Het bord was zeer stabiel en krijgt van de reviewer een uitstekende beoordeling met maar liefst 4.6 uit 5:

MSI 645 Ultra is the first DDR board that makes it to the market with a well tuned BIOS for DDR266. I would say that the BIOS needs more fine tuning at 200/333 to allow it to run even faster. Content Creation results are impressive and so is the 3D benchmarking results. The DDR333 definitely makes it a viable alternative compared to the RAMBUS versions. Currently SiS645 and ALiAladdinP4 are the only DDR333 P4 DDR solutions. As there are no ALi boards available yet, it looks like the SiS645 board is the better bet right now.

MSI mainboards never fails in delivering an impressive package with lots of goodies within. It has the best features like D-bracket, 1Mhz stepping for your overclocking needs. We were able to increase the FSB to 112Mhz CAS2 Ultra, voltage:1.85v memory running at 298Mhz scoring 1239/1248 in SiSoft Sandra memory benchmarks. Voltage tweaking is also available if you find that the current performance is not enough for you. Documentation is also pretty well written and BIOS screen shots and explanations of the various BIOS settings are direct to the point. The BIOS needs a bit more tuning to make it better at DDR333. Overall, a well packaged P4 DDR solution.

Bij OCworkbench is een review verschenen over het Abit KR7A moederbord. Dit moederbord is gebaseerd op de VIA KT266A chipset en kan overweg met maximaal 4GB DDR geheugen. Aanwezig zijn 6 PCI, 1 AGP en 4 DIMM sloten. Daarnaast zitten er op het moederbord een viertal IDE aansluitingen, waarvan twee gebruikt kunnen worden voor ATA133 en RAID. Naast het bezitten van veel features blijkt het moederbord ook erg goed te presteren waardoor de reviewer de volgende positieve conclusie trekt:

Sometimes I really wonder why the old KT7A performs so well compared to other boards that are based on the same chipset. The time is just ripe and ABIT KR7A show it again. The performance of the KR7A is so impressive that I could not imagine not getting one to replace my working machine that is a Slot A Athlon. Personally, I feel that ABIT has put in lots of R&D hours to bring out a board that is a killer product. They have done it again. The only thing they never introduce are the overclocking stripes from TH7-II RAID and the reset/power buttons on TH7-II. These are good stuff that should be brought onto the KR7A for DIY users.

Features wise this board uses the latest Highpoint HPT372 chipset to support ATA-133 HD. Well, the VIA KT266A does not support ATA-133 natively. Seriously, the board lack one basic feature which some of you might like or might not like - a 6 channel audio sound.

[...] In all, KR7A is definitely one of the best boards of the year. With it's excellent performance. I think no one would want to give it a miss. Again, I have to stress that this board could be more complete if some sort of diagnostics led and SPDIF audio/6 ch audio stuff can be implemented on it. I will definitely look forward to another ABIT board which supports DDR333 and ATA133 standard in the near future.

Op Digit Life is een review verschenen van een nVidia nForce 420-D reference board. Dit bord beschikt over een geïntegreerde Geforce2 MX core op 175MHz met 32MB DDR geheugen op 266MHz en een 128-bit brede geheugenbus. Deze brede bus wordt bereikt door gebruik te maken van twee geheugen controllers. Om van de 128-bit bus gebruik te kunnen maken moeten wel twee DIMM's aanwezig zijn. Verder kan via de southbridge hardwarematig Dolby Digital 5.1 geluid gedecodeerd worden.

Het bord wordt vergeleken met de Epox 8KHA+, dit is een bordje gebaseerd op de VIA KT266A chipset. De nForce komt in bijna alle tests als beste uit de bus, de VIA chipset moet vooral in geheugen-intensieve benchmarks in het stof bijten. Interessant is dat het nForce bord met een externe Geforce2 MX400 een stuk beter presteert dan met de geïntegreerde core, dit is te danken aan de hogere kloksnelheid en het feit dat de kaart niet om het geheugen hoeft te vechten met de processor. Xbit Labs concludeert dat de nForce de nieuwe 'king of speed' is, zeker omdat het geteste bord nog maar een reference exemplaar is:

So, we have a new leader among chipsets for Athlons. The nForce snatched out the palm from the today's best chipset. The speed of operation with memory is really impressing, especially if a test "suits" for DASP. Real applications don't get a considerable gain, and the NVIDIA even loses to the VIA with a 64-bit bus. But first of all, I think it makes no sense to use a 64-bit mode, secondly, performance of most applications (in particular, games) can benefit much from a 128-bit access, and thirdly, we tested just a reference board...

In all tests the external accelerator outclasses the integrated one even in case of the 128-bit memory access. But we should take into account that the external GeForce2 MX has better characteristics. I think the price will be a determining factor here.
